Donald E Darling of the Auburn Police Department summed up the situation. He sat in his cruiser at one of many railroad crossings in the city that became blocked when a passing train became stalled. Shortly before one o’clock a 120-unit freight train became disabled when an air-line broke. Immediately traffic became jammed in the city. A Central Maine Central Railroad crew made repairs in about one half hour and the train was moving once again. However It was still quite a while before the congested traffic cleared.
