Local nonprofits partner for inaugural service events

Fort Bend County Judge KP George partnered with the Houston Food Bank and Missouri City-based Second Mile Mission for a food drive last Saturday at Heritage Rose Elementary School in Rosharon that served residents of Fresno and Rosharon impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic and Winter Storm Uri.
The event was one of three sponsored events that took place Saturday as part of the county’s inaugural “Gandhi Day of Service.”
Other efforts included a food fair at Mamie George Community Center in Richmond as well as the NAMIWalk Your Way United Day of Hope at various locations around Houston to raise mental health awareness. The purpose behind the Gandhi Day of Service is to “encourage the Fort Bend County residents to take action” by volunteering their time, donating to a cause or hosting a food drive, according to a news release from the county.
