America first economy in switzerland. Greta thunberg says that leaders such as trump are failing to avert the coming climate catastrophe. Sounding the alarm, a new virus is now in the United States. That report c comes as chchinese statee media say a sixth person has died. International airports and train stations are screening passengers coming from china. Plus, as australias fires continue to blaze, so does the countrys unique wildlife. Tonight, how a mother and son are dodoing theirr part to help save the beloved kangaroos. I am brent goff, to our viewers on pbs in the United States and around the world, welcome. We start tonight in the United States. History being made, donald trump is now the third president in u. S. History to phase removal from office trial. The u. S. Senate is the setting for his impeachment trial, where trump faces charges of abuse of power and obstruction of congress. Democrats say that trump conditioned Critical Military aid for ukraine on ukraines willingness to help in hurting a political opponent of trump in the 2020 election. They also say that trump tried to cover it up. Republicans and trumps legal team say his actions were appropriate, that they were neither illegal nor impeachable. The senate will spend hours today debating rules for the trial. The leaders of the two Political Parties in the senate chamber, Mitch Mcconnell and democratic minority leader Chuck Schumer presented their cases for and against the resolution that sets the rules for the trial. Mcconnell calls affair and says it is based on the bill clinton impeachment trial from 1999. Schumer says it is anything but fair. Here is part of what they had to say. Finally, some fairness. Our straightforward resolution will bring the clarity and fairness that everyone deserves. This resolution will go down as one of the darker moments in senate history. Perhaps even the darkest. Pick up and carry on the inadequate investigation to set a new president that could lead to hasty impeachments in the future. We are mcconnell claimed that the house led the most rush impeachment great in history. The truth is, leader mcconnell is plotting the most rush, least throughout and least fair impeachment trial of history. Brent lets take this story to washington and on capitol hill, where the trial is taking place. Our Washington Bureau chief, good evening to you. Walk us through the arguments of the two sides. Whatever you heard so far . What have we heard so far . As we have heard, both sides clashing over the rules for the impeachment trial, with democrats saying that the republicans want to rush through the process and by doing so want to cover up the president s misconduct. The democrats want to subpoena additional documents. They want to depose additional witnesses who appear to be willing to testify in the senate trial. Witnesses such as the former White House National sesecurity advisor and others. The republicans say lets stick with our rules, lets hear the case and then decide whether we would like to depose witnesses and subpoena documents. In all of that of course, President Trumps legal team is weighing in, saying the president did nothing wrong and the chcharges brought against hm do not amount to an impeachable offense. Brent we want to make sure our viewers are clear, the trial is taking place in the u. S. Senate. Have live pictures to show of the trial. The u. S. Senate is a place where bipartisan agreements have been the rule for the most part, even for the clinton impeachment trial. It was rules were agreed on unanimously. Are we seeing anything like that this time . Not at all. What was put on display so far was the deep partisan divisions on capitol hill. Mitch mcconnell, the Senate Majority leader is convinced and confident that in the end, he has the votes to move forward and ignore the democrats demands. However, there are reports saying that he might be considering changing the proposed rules a little bit. Trying to show that he is ready to compromise a bit in this case. Brent we know the u. S. President , he is on this side of the atlantic right now. Lets hear from the economic foreman dollars. How nervous is the Trump Administration going into this trial . I think that it is very telling that President Trump left washington on this very important, historic day and decided to participate in the World Economic forum to tout his economic policies as if he would like us to believe that he doesnt care. He is still of course nervous. They know that President Trump wants a swift acquittal, but they also know that the senate trial is likely to dominate the headlines in the coming days and weeks. Brent our correspondent on capitol hill, where the impeachment trial of u. S. President donald trump is taking place. Thank you. As lawmakers debated the rules for the trial that could spell the end of his presidency, donald trump was nowhere to be found in the u. S. Across the atlantic in the swiss hops, trump opened the World Economic forum today. He spoke about the economic success of his America First policy. The report he offered ignored Climate Change, the topic that has taken center stage. Returning for a second year, Greta Thunberg said leaders such as trump have failed to protect her generation from the climate chaos, but her words are not likely to sway the opinion of the u. S. President. Leaving behind the heat of impeachment trials, few can blame President Trump for seeking out alpine air. The u. S. President was in davos to address the global elite. This election year, his message was meant for households across the u. S. America is thriving and america is winning like never before. Just days after reaching a breakthrough with china, trump sees the stage to bang the drum for his America First approach. These agreements represent a new model of trade for the 21st century, that are fair, reciprocal and prioritize the needs of workers and families. As well as business, this years conference was supposed to deal with the Climate Crisis. Activists like attitude berg summoned to rebuke the powerful. You say children should not worry. You say just leave this to us. We will fix this. We promise we wont let you down. Dont be so pessimistic. And then, nothing. While davos tuned in, one man was in no mood for lectures. This is not a time for pessimism. This is a time for optimism. Fear and doubt is not a good thought process because this is a time for tremendous hope and joy. But to embrace the possibilities of tomorrow we must reject the prophets of doom. It was an image that left an impression. Is a little bit odd. It is mainly all about the u. S. I feel ill. Leaders think only about themselves. They must think about other nations b because we have the se planet. You have got to think beyond that. As trump wrapped up the job of allotting his economic record, he left questions in his lake. Brent certainly one of the most bizarre moments we have seen in davos. Im joined by my colleague. He is covering the World Economic forum for us. Good evening. We have the u. S. President today talking about prophets of doom and fortunetellers. Of course hinting at Climate Change. What was the reaction . Javier the reaction was of course a lot of criticism against the u. S. President , not only because he didnt mention Climate Change whatsoever in his speech, suggesting that it is irrelevant, but most of all because his idea is quite simple. His message was, we have had problems in the past that we thought we couldnt solve and we figured it out so why are we so stressed about this and that is something that is a slap in the face for all those organizations and scientists working to find solutions to tackle the Climate Crisis but it is especially being criticized because of one of the measures that we saw, suggested by donald trump, which is planting one trillion trees. This has been compared to other Simple Solutions like the border wall to mexico, where many of the experts say this is a solution that can have an effect but it is not a solution for such a complex problem. Brent Greta Thunberg picked up on that comment, saying planting trtrees is certainly not enougho stop Climate Change. She also said that combating Climate Change is not about politics. Lets take a listen. From a sustainability perspective, the rights, the left, as well as the center have all failed. No political ideology or economic structure has been able to tackle the climate and environmental emergency and create a cohesive and sustainable world. Because that world, in case you havent noticed, is currently on fire. Brent the world is on fire, and Greta Thunberg there, wise beyond her years, saying that an entire generation, not just one side of the political spectrum, is responsible for Climate Change. What else did she say today . Javier perhaps the most Important Message that she wanted to deliver is that t time is running out. We have seen this before, but this time she specifically mentioned the plans that are being announced as a reaction to speeches like hers and the ones that say there is a climate emergency. We see Many Companies and governments that announced plans that say they will achieve some kind of oil goal by 2050, but that of course includes a transition. For example, giving up fossil fuels. She says this has to happen immediately. That admissions have to be brought to zero right now, not to net zero, as have been suggested, meaning that admissions are not going to grow. They dont have to stop growing, they have to stop completely. That is what Greta Thunberg wanted World Leaders to know. Even though she did not mention donald trump directly, there was a stark contrast, aside from the tree plan that donald trump presented and that is that she said we cannot rely on technologies that have not been invented yet, hinting at Donald Trumps optimistic message that we will somehow figure everything out. Brent also Boris Johnson and his selection ashes solutions in the brexit crisis. My colleague there in davos, switzerland. Thank you. Here are some of the other stories making headlines. Airports and train stations on high alert across china. This after authorities revealed the coronovirus can be spread between humans, something they had previously ruled out. Authorities say they are monitoring a possible case of the virus. The World Health Organization will meet on wednesday to decide if the outbreak should be declared an International Public health emergency. Brent our correspondent is vering the coronovirusus outbreak. The numbebers of infececons y this m mysterious vivirus are incrcreasing and also the concen among the public inin china iss growowing. You can see that because every second a passerby in downtown beijing is wearing a facemask. If you look around markets and onliline s stores, supplieies oe masks are running out. Mamany young peoplple have a feg that they might not be vevery accurately i informed by y the government authorities. They have a feeliling that thee ththreat of the virus is actualy bigger thahan what is being reported b by officials. However, we have reason to assume the authorities in the countryy are welell prepared t o tackle the virus, becauause chia alreadady had to deall with a similar e experiencnce, namel ss in 200002 a and 20000 t that kid more than 600 people. Since then, research ininfrastructure and medicical equiuipment i in hospitals hahas improvoved and the authorities have the chance to learn from the mistakes they made in the past.
