Learn more about International Women's Day at the library Annie Gilmer It’s the beginning of March already, and this column comes out just in time for me to talk about International Women’s Day which is celebrated on March 8. This holiday, or day of recognition, is set aside specifically in order to celebrate women for their achievements, and to raise awareness about women’s equality. International Women’s Day (IWD) was officially recognized in 1977 by the United Nations, but the celebration vastly predates the seventies. According to the UN’s website, the first IWD celebration took place on February 28, 1909 which was organized in support of the garment workers’ strike that took place the year prior where women protested for better working conditions.
