Leading infectologist loses his life in fight against COVID-19

The COVID-19 pandemic provided a grim reminder of its reach January with news that it had claimed the life of one of the medical professionals leading the fight against its spread.
Pauls Aldiņš, born in 1971, was an infectologist at Pauls Stradiņš Clinical University Hospital (Stradiņš Hospital), and passed away on the evening of December 31, 2020, according to information released by the hospital.
''The hospital has lost an outstanding doctor, scientist, educator and colleague. His contribution to the development of the Latvian infectious disease field is invaluable... In communication with patients, Pauls Aldiņš was a model of the highest ethical and professional standards of a doctor, always responsive, patient and kind in his work with colleagues, never forgot to fulfill what he promised, and was precise down to the smallest detail," the hospital said.
