This is the cbs evening news with jeff glor. Glor good evening. Police say the young gunman methodically fired inside a crowded school atrium. 14 people were shot this morning. Two of them died. A student at the school is being charged with murder and attempted murder. It happened in benton, kentucky. That is about 30 miles from west paducah, where one of the first School Shootings 20 years ago left three dead. Adriana diaz is in benton tonight. Reporter police say it was just before 8 00 a. M. When the 15yearold student, armed with a handgun, walked into Marshall County high school and started shooting randomly. Everybody started running and stuff. I saw people getting shoved. Of blood everywhere. Just it was horrible. Everyone that was in the library, once they saw what was happening, we all started running towards the library office. And once we got in there, we just shut the lights off, sat down, locked the doors. Reporter parents rush to the school immediately. It took less than 10 minutes for federal and local Law Enforcement to respond. The building was put on lockdown. Shaken students were bussed to an Area Middle School to reunite with their loved ones. Marshall county deputies arrested the gunman, who remains unidentified. Lieutenant michael webb is with the kentucky state police. And he was apprehended by the Sheriffs Department here on site at the school, thankfully before any more lives could be taken. Reporter one victim, a 15yearold girl, died at the scene. Five of the wounded were air lifted to Vanderbilt University Medical Center in nashville where another student, a 15yearold boy, later died. Governor matt bevin these children belong to this community and to specific families in this community. And this is a wound that is going to take a long time to heal. And for some in this community will never fully heal. Reporter the county attorney will ask for the teen suspect to be tried as an adult. The Justice Department confirmed today that attorney general Jeff Sessions was interviewed last week by the special counsels office. Robert mueller is investigating russian meddling in the 2016 election, and Major Garrett has the president s reaction. Reporter in the oval office today, President Trump said he was not worried about what attorney general Jeff Sessions said, even though he hadnt spoken to him. No, i didnt, but im nota at all concerned. Reporter this public face of calm came amid the initial disclosure that former f. B. I. Director james comey was interviewed by the special counsel in december. Comey was fired by the president in part because of the russia investigation. According to sources, comey shared notes he took of conversations with mr. Trump before the firing, recounting that mr. Trump sought comeys loyalty and the possibility of a pending investigation into former National Security adviser michael flynn. The president has denied comeys description of those conversations. Press secretary Sarah Huckabee sanders there was no collusion. Theres nothing to it. Were ready to move on. Reporter muellers questioning of comey is not about collusion but potential obstruction of justice. The white house claims the investigation is biased. At a white house meeting monday, attended by sessions, White House Counsel Don Mcgahn and f. B. I. Director christopher wray, the main topic was 5 months of missing text message betweens highlevel f. B. I. Employees, some of of which have been released publicly and do deminterest rate a pattern of political bias against mr. Trump. In a statement about the f. B. I. , a white house spokesman said the president , believes politically motivated senior leaders, including former director comey and others he empowered, have tainted the agencys reputation for unbiased pursuit of justice. At the white house meeting, wray also protested the pressure sessions was applying to fire f. B. I. Director cake over the text scandals. Reporter its not the first time americans have been killed in a terrorist attack in kabul, but it brought home just how unsafe the Afghan Capital is after 16 years of war. A suicide squat scwaud of six taliban fighters terrorized the Intercontinental Hotel for 14 hours over the weekend before the last of them was killed. Some guests escaped over balconies, while others hid under beds or in bath tubs. 150 people, including 41 foreigners, got out alive. The only safe way to get from the airport to the us embassy is by helicopter, and the only safe way to live is behind blast barriers, which keep getting higher. After having a maximum of 130,000 combat troops in afghanistan, the u. S. Is now down to onetenth of that and is pursuing a new strategy, relying on Afghan Ground troops to do the fighting, backed up by american advisers and air strikes. U. S. Aircraft have also begun striking opium labs which are believed to be the talibans major source of revenue. Cbs news has learned the seven adult siblings will be moved this week into an assisted living facility. The six juveniles will be sent to foster homes. People in alaska were jolted weak overnight by a powerful earthquake in the gulf of alaska, and sirens warning of a possible tsunami. Jamie yuccas is in anchorage tonight. Oh, my gosh, thats an earthquake. Reporter first came the shaking, then a dire warning sirens the magnitude 7. 9 earthquake struck a half hour past midnight, well off the alaska coast. The quake itself, far enough away not to cause major damage, but in the worst spot for a potential tsunami. Attention, a tsunami warning has been issued for this area. Reporter within minutes, the roads in the seaside town of kodiak, alaska were filled with cars heading to higher ground. This is not a drill. This is an actual tsunami warning. Reporter that warning covered not only most of coastal alaska but also the entire coast of british columbia. Tsunami watches were posted from Washington State to california, and even hawaii, and as far away as american samoa. For two harrowing, pitchblack hours, many braced for the worst. But by 4 00 a. M. , less than four hours after the quake hit, all warnings were lifted. The only tsunami an eightinch wave in kodiak. Still, almost every alaskan felt the initial jolt.
