thousands took to the streets in the middle east to protest the u.s.'s decision to recognize jerusalem at the capital of israel, but today the police are preparing for a so-called day of rage. good morning from the studio 57 newsroom at cbs news headquarters here in new york. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. this morning in california, tens of thousands of homes remain in jeopardy from a string of wind-driven destructive wildfires. two new fires have ignited. one burning through a retirement community near san diego. fire crews are now battling six major fires, making progress with some and not with others. the largest fire around ventura destroyed at least 130i buildins and covers thousands of mile. kenneth craig has the story. >> this single-family home reduced no nothing but rubble, all that's left, the shell of their minivan. hundreds of thoroughbred horses ran for their lives as the southern california wildfire spread even further south. this new blaze dubbed the lilac fire is in northern san diego county. volunteers trying to save them said several of the horses were killed. several were badly injured. >> i caught a couple that were actually burned. >> reporter: the lilac fire 35 north of san diego grew six square miles in just a few hours. further north, the biggest of the blazes around ventura has grown to nearly 200 miles. that fire has accounted for the bulk of at least 500 buildings destroyed so far. officials say even though the, hurricane-force winds predicted for thursday didn't quite materialize they're still fanning the embers. >> that santa ana weakening is going to cause the fire to be much less predictable. it's going to move in different directions. >> reporter: here where the fire passed through, people are being allowed back home. sadly, there's not much to see. >> all of my little brother's stuff, that's where they've been growing up. >> reporter: every day the fire continues, air quality becomes more of an issue. so much so, more schools have been closed today. this is one of the hardest hit neighbors in develop tur rah county. i think it's safe to say half is no longer standing. one described it as a war zone. >> thank you, kenneth. this morning the first major snowstorm of the season is making its way from the southeast up to new england. winter storm warnings and advisories are posted from southern texas to south carolina. up to three inches of snow expected this morning in corpus christi. schools in austin are canceled today. paul deanno of kpix has more on this significant outbreak. >> there's a significant kink in the jet stream in the u.s. in alaska, an overnight low of 56 degree. that will by far overshadow a record. on the other side we have snow steadily falling in houston, texas, this morning, a jd that snow is going to be on the move as soon as 9:00 friday morning. atlanta and new orleans dealing with light to moderate snowfall. by this afternoon, washington, d.c., norfolk, virginia. charlotte, north carolina, dealing with snowfall, and by tomorrow morning it works its way up the eastern seaboard. boston, providence, philadelphia, and d.c. this snowstorm started as snow in texas. i'm paul tee a noe for cbs news. the snow in texas is a rarity, but not so in buffalo, new york. some areas of western new york got over a foot and a half. today israeli forces are bracing for more violence in the wake of president trump's decision to recognize jerusalem as israel's capital. on the gaza strip they burned a picture of the president. vice president mike pence would not be welcome in the west bank during his visit to the region next month. minnesota governor mark dayton says he hasn't decided on a replacement for al franken. after serving more than eight years, franken has announced he's stepping down amid several allegations of sexual misconduct. he took a parting shot at president trump. >> some of the allegations against me simply are not true. others i remember very differently. >> if anything franken suggested he is the victim of a double standard. i am leaving while a man who has bragged on tape about his history of sexual assaults sits in the oval office. >> reporter: like president trump franken is accused of groping multiple women before he came to washington. >> i would have liked to have seen him take some responsibility, but the end result is the same. >> reporter: senator amy klobuchar is franken's colleague. >> i would have thought you would have more. you were calling for members asking you to step down. it was going to be really difficult for him to do his job. >> reporter: the pair of resignation this week puts even more pressure on the gop and its alabama senate candidate roy moore. many senate republicans disavowed moore again. >> i wish it were another nominee. >> nancy cordes, cbs news, capitol hill. and republican congressman trent franks says he's resigning next month. he said he never physically or intentionally contacted them. frank and his wife have children through sur olgacy. he said he would be unable to get a fair hearing. congress passed a stopgap bill. they passed the measure yesterday that keeps the government financially afloat until december 22nd. also yesterday president trump held budget talks with top congressional leaders. democrats say there won't be a deal unless there are protections for d.r.e.a.m.ers. and ahead on "cbs this morning," we will discuss the budget negotiations with republican south dakota senator john thune. it's still unclear why a gunman opened fire at a new mexico high school, killing two students. the shooter is also dead, but it's not known if he took his own life or was kill bed the police. barry petersen reports. >> reporter: it's a scene that's become all too familiar, students barricading themselves behind locked doors as a student opens fire. as tech high school was the school in the cross hairs. and they knew what to do. this is a student at the high school. >> i could feel it vibrating and then it stopped and we -- we -- when we evacuated out of our room, there was a dead body outside our room, and we were told that it was probably the shooter that shot himself outside our door. >> reporter: some parents reported hearing from their children via text messages that they could hear the shooter approaching. >> you feel like anymore you're not safe anywhere. >> reporter: the high school was cordoned off as police cleared the campus and teens were reunited with their parents. chief mike shield runs the police department. chief kneel wneil was one of th heroes. he and his men busted through the glass to get in and resolve the situation. barry peterson, cbs news, as tech, new mexico. michael pfleger, the former south carolina police officer who fatally shot walter scott an unarmed black man get 20s years behind bars. in exchange prosecutors dropped state murder charges. pfleger is one of the few police officers to go to prison for a fatal "the tampa bay times" reports that parents are refusing to answer investigator's question. he's accused of killing four people in apparently random attacks. his parents' attorney said they're not going to answer questions that could lead to their son's execution. they're going to be brought back in next month to see if they should be held in contempt of court. they're casting uncertainty about the u.s. competing in the south korea winter olympics. yesterday white house press secretary sarah huckabee sanders said no official decision has been made. later she tweeted the u.s. looks forward to participating. later u.n. ambassador nikki haley said it was an open question whether they would compete. and ed sheeran received a high honor from prince charles of the buckingham palace. prince the plane. only the bomber was killed. but islamic militants of al shabaab try to perfect the laptop bomb. in fact, they tried to plant the bomb a day earlier, but the flight was canceled. in the past 18 months, three other computer bombs were found after one partially exploded in a cargo hoechltd new multi-layered security checks including dolgs trained to sniff out explosives are supposed to stop that, but al shabaab still has people on the inside. deputy head of security. >> the biggest problem we have no matter who it is, airport manager, everybody has to follow. >> reporter: the militants operate freely in this crumbling city of mogadishu. we have been repeatedly told that they have eyes and ears everywhere, they blend easily into local communities. a street like this may not look menacing, but it can turn nasty in an instant. a truck bomb in october killed 500 people and injured hundreds more. according to intelligence sources, the bomb went off early. it was meant to hit the airport. the u.s. embassy is right next door. a senior intelligence service tells us that al shabaab now has international support. the flight was bound for india where the bomber had a visa and
