The longest serving member of congress, john conyers gave up his role as senior democrat on the House Judiciary Committee, and senator al franken is talking at length about the accusations by four women. They ended eight days of silence by speaking to our minneapolis station. He said hes embarrassed and ashamed. Broadcaster lee an he groped her. Here is part of their conversation. You know, gayle, i thought about something you said last week in the aftermath of the charlie rose allegations where you said, how do you wrap your head around it when somebody you care about does something thats bad. For his supporters, for his supporters, i think thats where were at right now. Theres a group of 65 prominent Democratic Women who came out yesterday and say they support him. That is a big deal. He says he has no intention to resign. He has absolutely no intention to resign. What about the allegations that he may have touched someones back during a picture. As a political reporter, i see many times the senators pose for thousands and thousands of pictures. Right. Theres a difference between having your hand around somebody and grabbing their buttocks. He acknowledged in that interview its possible he could have done it. Can he survive it, yes or no . I think at this point with those 75 coming forward including staffers, 35 people from saturday night live women have signed a letter saying that, at this point, yes. Nancy pelosi said yesterday theres a refreshing new zero toll lance on capitol hill but then she declined to come down hard on one of her own members, and that surprised even some democrats. John conyers is an icon in our country. Hes done a great deal to protect women. Democratic leader nancy pelosi was cautious sunday when asked about allegations against michigans john conyers. Do you believe i dont know who they are. They have not really come forward. You dont know if you believe the accusations. Thats for the Ethics Committee to review, but i believe he understands what is at stake here and he will do the right thing. Hours later conyers announced he would be stepping down as the top democrat on the House Judiciary Committee though he vehemently denied the allegations. Nancy pelosi followed with a more forceful statement. The house Ethics Committee opened an investigation into a pair of allegations against conyers last week including revelations that his office paid a former staffer more than 27,000 to settle a complaint. That staffer said she was fired for refusing conyers sexual advances. Legal documents published by Buzzfeed News detail multiple allegations by female Staff Members of unwanted touching and romantic advances. One of his anonymous accusers has released a statement through her lawyer asking to be released from her confidentiality agreement. She says if conyers can speak freely about what did or didnt happen, then she should be able to do the same, vlad. Nancy cordes, thank you very much. Up to 100,000 people are being ordered to evacuate in bali where a mavis volcano is on the verge of a major eruption. Mt. Agung started spewing ash into the air. People within six miles of the volcano were told to leave the area. 445 flights were canceled as ash filled the ill ask. Around 59,000 travelers were stranded. Officials sent 100 buses the airport and ferry terminals to pick up the stranded passengers. Nearly 500,000 tourists visited there last week. Lonnie quinn is here with the volcanos impact. It generates a lot of heat which generates a lot of pressure. It pushed it into the main vent of the volcano and the eruption will happen when the pressure gets so great its forced to blow out of the top of the volcano, and a little of two months ago, the threat level of the eruption was raised and more than 100,000 people have been evacuated. Number one, big increase in earthquakes around the volcano, and number two, the sides have gotted is big theyre starting to bulge. Besides lava, a huge threat will be flow. Thats a mixture of steam and ash and rock and searing gust and what makes it so dinchsing it moves a heck of a lot faster than lava. 450 miles an hour down the side of the volcano. They go for miles. The last one stretched eight miles from the crater. The last time it interrupted the aerosols dropped Global Temperatures by half a degree.
