"eyewitness news" reporter cherri greg joins with us more on that. cherri what can you tell us. >> reporter: well, nicole, i can tell thaw 39th police district sergeant was well like, he was dedicated, he was a family man and a he will be missed. i saw officers and personnel from the 39th police district coming in and they are having a very tough morning. as you can see from the footage that we have here, the police tell us that the officer was driving along, in roxborough along the winding section of the 6100 block of henry avenue, near du pont around midnight on saturday and that is where police say that the sergeant crashed his dodge ram truck into a tree. no other vehicle was involved, in the crash but the sergeant's truck was said to be badly damaged. the the officer was off-duty and was the only person in the vehicle. he was rushed to einstein hospital, and police have now confirmed that he has died. his name and age has not yet been released, pending the notifications of his family. back out here live i spoke with a supervisor here, at a 39th police district, and he said that the sergeant lost his life, does have children, and so, the information is extremely sensitive. he was a rising star in the force. he was very will well like in the community. he had done quite a bit despite the fact that he was relatively young. we are expect to go learn more about the identity of this 39th police district sergeant as the day continues. live from hunting park, cherri greg for kyw news radio for cbs-3 "eyewitness news". we will be thinking of his friend, family and, of course, the other officers. cherri, thanks. new this morning a 17 year-old boy is shot in mount laurel, new jersey. police responded to the call shortly before midnight in the 33 hundred block of marne highway. boy was shot multiple times including his chest. he was taken to cooper university hospital and there is in word on his condition. calls for justice are growing louder in the case of the the south jersey man shot and killed by police during a traffic stop. this comes after a grand jury decided not to indict the officers involved. "eyewitness news" reporter steve pather sun has the details. >> reporter: it is a small town, hush/hush town f be in don't stand up, nothing will be done. >> reporter: that is how they feel, that it is hush/ hush in cumberland county. days after a grand jury decided not to indict the officers involved in the shooting death of 36 year-old jerome reid, saturday reid's family says they are in the done fighting. >> we do not accept the cumberland county prosecutors decision. >> went right through that stop sign back there. >> reporter: video of the incident december 31st, 2014, reid is in the passenger seed pulled over by bridgeton police officer bra him dave and roger worely. you can see the situation escalating, officers fine and remove a gun from the car. they ordered reid to freeze and keep his hand up but he moves to exit the the the vehicle. >> unaudible. >> reporter: police fired more than eight shots, including the handful that kills reid. >> what do we want. >> justice. >> reporter: protest erupt both in outrage to the shooting and to spur the state's attorney general to take over the investigation, in an effort that failed. a report from the shooting says that the officers felt they were in quote imminent danger and feared for their lives before shots were fire. >> we believed that they presented a weak case for their not to be an indictment. >> reporter: civil rights leaders walter hudson says he doubts guidance giving to the grand jury from the prosecutor's office and spearheading the push for a federal civil rights investigation. >> we did not accept that and we're not going to accept that. >> reporter: hudson says paperwork for an official request for that federal investigation could be filed as early as tuesday of this coming week and he also says that more protests will be planned. reporting from the news center tonight, i'm steve paterson for cbs-3 "eyewitness news". meanwhile in bucks county authorities released name of the young child who drowned in the neshaminy shore picnic park. police say four year-old nahyoh johnson was found in that pool yesterday afternoon. child was part of the larger family function happening at that park. police are now investigating. this weekend president obama phoned the the three americans who stopped a terror attack in france, to thank them, for their heroic actions. they saw a man's merge from the bathroom with the gun and took action. andy rhodes has details. >> we could have just let everybody die. >> reporter: three american friend were among passengers who tackled the gun man on board a train bound for paris on friday. alex score lath owes served in the national guard. >> a guy with the ak entered the train cabin so me and my friend got down and i said basically let's go. >> reporter: authorities say americans and french national rushed the gun man air men spencer stone was injury. >> i think spencer is the real hero. he is the the first one to jump on him: he is the one that got cut up. >> reporter: stone was treated in a french hospital. british passenger chris dor man said he joined into give himself a chance to survive. >> what else is there to do. either you sit down and you die or you get up and you die. it was really nothing more than that. >> reporter: passengers subdued the attacker eventually tying him on the ground. the train was rerouted to north of paris where police took the gun man into custody. citing official sources french media reporting that the suspect's name is a moroccan national, the investigation is investigating when is linked to radical islamic networks. president obama and french president praised the americans saying they helped prevent a tragedy. anthony sadler says when he saw spencer rush in he and skarlatos had to help. >> that is our friend. we had to go join them. >> reporter: i'm andy rose reporting. a new jersey congressman says a man who gunned down a guard in the federal building in manhattan was a federal whistle blower who got a raw deal. congressman, says that his staff had been working with kevin downing, fired by the the bureau of labor statistics in 1999. downing walked in the government building friday night, shot a guard and then shot himself. a barnegat ocean county man is under arrest in connection with the week long disappearance of the rosie o'donnell's 17 year-old daughter chelsea. twenty-five year-old steven scherer is charged with endangering welfare of the child and distribution of the obscenity to a minor. o'donnell's spokeswoman says scherer's arrest stems from evidence of inappropriate communication with chelsea. the teenager ran a away from her new york home august 11th and she was found safe at scherer's home on tuesday. 8:08. we have some great news forbidder fans. eagles are now two-zero for the the preseason and they beat baltimore ravens with a solid performance by new quarterback sam bradford. by the way, this was the new qb's first nfl game in a year so we cbs news correspondent, jonathan vigliotti tells us that both of the victims were unaware of the threat dropping out of the sky. >> reporter: daring stunt you are about to see is hard to watch, knowing how it all end. >> we're getting the emergency services in soon, so stay where you are police report report minutes before the the crash, a pilot pulled his world war two era t7 jet up toward the clouds as he prepared for is what known as a loop maneuver. hundreds watched on at the air show in sussex as pilot successfully flipped over, but he soon started to barrel down to the ground. he tried to pull up, but not fast enough. >> i just thought you are too low, too low, pull up, and he went straight in the ground. >> reporter: the impact caused a massive fireball, a amazingly officials say the pilot survived, although he is fighting for his life at a local hospital. it is unclear if he ejected before the crash. most of the victims were just sitting in their cars at the time, unaware of the threat, that came, from overhead. >> this is the second crash in an air show in england this month. at this point it is unclear what caused today's tragic accident. officials say there are cooler in d.c. but everybody will be getting in on that nice, clear, weather in the northeast. dew points though holding it the steady bye 55, in philadelphia, 58 in wilmington. you can see couple places like wildwood clicking up to 59. it will be a beautiful day at the beach. 81 degrees. sunshine, a few cloud. low rip current risk. these water temperatures are pretty nice this time of the year. if you are brave enough to get in the water, it won't be quite as chilly as you might think. 79 degrees in some spots. we are getting up there. that is the end of the summer feeling, right. have been talking about this the last few hours an off-duty philadelphia police sergeant killed in the car crash overnight, just hate to hear about this. "eyewitness news" reporter cherri greg joins with us more on that. just a sad day, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, nicole. tough day here in the 39th police district as we mentioned these officers are mourning the the loss of one of their own a young district sergeant whose supervisors are hailing as a father who has dedicated to his community, dedicated to his job, and dedicated to his family. as you can see from the footage that we have here in are. it happened in the roxborough neighborhood along a winding section of the 6100 block of henry avenue near dew point around midnight on saturday. as you can see, he was driving, his dodge ram truck along this winding, section, of henry avenue. police say he crashed into a tree, badly damaging his vehicle. he was the only person in the vehicle and the only vehicle involve in the crash. the sergeant was off-duty, he was rushed to einstein hospital and police have have confirmed that he died. the name, age of the officer has not been released pending notification, of his family, and that out here live, i have been told, that this sergeant was very well liked. he was a rising star on the force, and that they are not releasing his name, his age, or other identifying information, because it is extremely sensitive and until they notify his family of his death. tough morning, nicole, live, from hunting park, cher rains ri growing for kyw news radio for cbs-3 "eyewitness news". switching gears, talking about wild fires, just continuing to raza cross washington state. so far american 250 square miles have have been burned, and some residents are actually taking matters into their own hand. correspondent carter evans has the latest. >> reporter: there are now so many fires in central washington that even 3,000 fire fighters on the ground, are not enough. is there a unprecedented call for volunteers. >> this is first for us, first we know of in the nation. >> reporter: joe smilely business washington's department of natural resources. he is giving them a crash course on fire safety. >> what are they going to be doing. >> they will be operating equipment mainly, and chopping down trees with large pieces of equipment. >> reporter: this morning around this a area the the night mayorish wind subsided, subsided by choking layer of smoke. signs of destruction are every where. dozens of homes have burned to the ground and for those like megan, and staying to save their homes with shovels and garden houses, nerves are frayed. >> you can just feel tragedy around you and smoke, you cannot breathe. good at this. he had that, he had that ability to thick quickly on his feet and i feel like he was not frayed of anything. >> reporter: where do you go from here? >> really don't know. i never thought that this would happen, and i don't know. i just don't have any sort of idea what will happen next. >> so hard breaking. it is investigating in the death of the three u.s. forest service fire fighters could take several months. a college students begin to head back to school they will get reminders on how to keep their personal belongings safe but a different kind of theft could be more costly. three on your side consumer reporter jim donovan has advice for keeping personal data, safe on campus. >> reporter: from the federal government, to massive retailers, data breaches have become more prevalent in the last few years, and academic institutions, haven't been immune. >> you have a student data, people coming to school for first time registering for classes, they have all this information they have to give the institution that is a all valuable data. >> reporter: michael kieser of the national cyber security alliance says that exchange of information, plus, data from other things, like medical research, and other scientific contracts, can make these institutions a big target. and some of them are only just catching up to that idea. >> they may not always ab wear of how much data they have and that really starts in any kind of an organization, looking at what is the data that we have in our campus, what are the crown jewels of that data and what are we doing to protect it. >> reporter: to get a sense of your college, university privacy policies and whether they could lead an opening for a breach. >> it starts at the very basic level of every user who is accessing a network, simple things like software patches, strong pass words, multi factorial awe then case which is a way to have something in addition to the pass word that should be implemented in every college campus at this point. >> reporter: parents back home can help by keeping lines of communication opened. making students aware of the bridges to the bank, insurance company or anywhere
