confirm what appears likely-- that it is the first piece of malaysia flight 370 to be found since the plane vanished 17 months ago. seth doane now on what could be the first piece of the puzzle. >> reporter: the debris that washed ashore appeared to be part of the wing known as a flaperon of a boeing 777 aircraft, and today boeing confirmed that the serial number found on the wreckage belonged to one of their aircraft parts. the flaperon will be taken to france for more analysis, including examining the barnicles to see if it matches something submerged for roughly 500 days. australia's transport minister warren truss called the find a major lead. >> this is, obviously a very significant development. it's the first real evidence that there is a possibility that a part of the aircraft may have been found. >> reporter: the flaperon is part of the wing that helps control the aircraft's speed on landing. it was discovered on reunion island 2300 miles west of the current search zone in the southern indian ocean. but investigators say computer models indicate debris could have floated that far pulled by ocean currents, and the discovery would likely not change the search area. the desperate nearly 17-month-long wait for answers has been agonizing for victims' families. they've endured false leads before. sarah bajc's partner, american woodphillip wood was on board. we talked just two days after the flight disappeared. >> the clothes in his closet are the worst. >> reporter: how so? >> because i open the closet and it smells like him. >> reporter: she was torn by the news today when we spoke with her from atlanta. >> it means that that threat of hope we've all been holding on to would be broken, and, you know when you have been keeping your spirits up and your hopes alive for a year and a half, that's a habit that's going to be difficult to break. >> reporter: most of the victims were chinese and family members here tell us they are watching these developments closely and say they want 100% proof that this is indeed, wreckage from m.a.-370 because scott, ultimately, they want to know where their family members are. >> pelley: seth doane in beijing this evening. thank you. flight 370 exposed the difficulties in locating missing planes. well nasa intentionally crashed a plane yesterday in an experiment that could solve future mysteries involving private planes. kris van cleave was there. >> 2 1. >> reporter: this plane's final 100-foot flight won't last long. but its dramatic end could one day save lives. it is the second of three crash tests at nasa's landing and impact research facility out norfolk, virginia purpose. >> whoa! >> the center was once used to practice lunar landings and still tests spacecraft. now researchers are working on building a better smarter long-range locate transmit they're can sense when a crash is imminent. known as an e.l.t., it's essentially a homing beacon built into planes designed to quickly lead rescuers to a crash site. lisa mazzuca is an astrophysicist. is the real goal of your research to start before impact to get to the crash before the crash? >> exactly. in many cases as we've now seen it is vital to know where that plane is while it's still in the air. right now these e.l.t.s only work upon impact. >> reporter: in 2013, there were more than 1200 small plane crashes in the u.s. killing 387 people. >> the importance is your life, so if these work and you are in dire straits, you had a golden hour, as we call it. we want to make sure we can get the rescue forces there to you as quickly as possible. >> reporter: but first that beacon has to survive impact. chad stimson is overseeing the project. what kind of forces it's going to be exposed to where it should be installed how to install the other pieces of equipment that it's connected to so that the complete system functions opt male. >> reporter: researchers are hoping to be able to make recommendations to the f.a.a. by the end of the year. scott, the transmitters don't work underwater but nasa says they are installed on commercial airliners. >> pelley: kris van cleave at the test center for us. thank you. today, former university of cincinnati police officer raymond tensing pleaded not guilty to charges that he murdered a 43-year-old motorist. dean reynolds has the story and new video. >> reporter: tensing was marched into court today wearing jailhouse stripes and a stricken look. the 25-year-old defendant was fired yesterday by the university of cincinnati and today he faced judge megan shanahan. >> reporter: when people in the courtroom applauded, the judge was not pleased. >> this is a courtroom. you will conduct yourselves at all times. >> reporter: in the july 19 incident tensing's body camera recorded the moment he pulled over samuel dubose for not having a license plate on the front of this 1998 honda. tensing asked for a driver's license but dubose could not produce one. the officer asked him to remove his seat belt and then tried to pull open the door, but deboas restarted the engine and put the car in gear. >> stop! stop! >> reporter: but it's only after tensing shot dubose at pointblank range that the car appears to begin to move, and that's a critical point given the officer's contention that he was being dragged first and had to shoot. another view from the body camera of a second officer does show tensing down on the street, and a third officer said he saw him being dragged. >> you good? >> reporter: those two officers have now been put on administrative leave. prosecutor joe deters said tensing tripped and fell. he was not dragged or in danger, he said. >> i think he was making an excuse for a purposeful killing of another person. >> reporter: stew mathews is tensing's lawyer. >> he's feeling like he's been run over by a train and he's very depressed and not happy. >> reporter: today's arraignment lasted just about two minutes and scott prosecutors here say this is the first time a law enforcement officer in this county has ever been charged with murder for actions taken in the line of duty. >> pelley: dean reynolds reporting for us this evening. dean, thank you. today, we heard desperate pleas for more ambulances, voices recorded in 911 calls from last week's movie theater shootings in louisiana. the gunman killed two and wounded nine before taking his life. david begnaud has the tapes and new video. >> reporter: the shooter 59-year-old john houser, is seen purchasing a ticket to the movie "train wreck" at 7:20 p.m. last thursday. a second camera shows him entering the lobby. he walks down a long hallway pauses goes left, then turns around and enters theater 14 under the cover of darkness, hiding a 40-caliber handgun. >> reporter: the first 911 call was made at 7:28 p.m. 19 more would follow. >> reporter: dash-cam video shows a la fate police officer racing to the scene at 7:33 p.m., 12 minutes after the gunman entered the theater. school teachers jena meaux and ali martin were among the survivors. >> i felt a bullet go through the side of my leg and into-- exit the other side of my leg. ( applause ) >> reporter: speaking publicly last night for the first time since the shooting, jena meauxitaryfully told a church crowd of 3,000 people the gunshots didn't seem real. >> as i crawled, i was praying because i really thought he was gonna shoot me in the back of the head as i crawled on the ground. >> reporter: of the nine victims who were shot, only one remains in the hospital. scott, in lafayette tonight thousands of people are expected at what it said to be a community-wide healing event. >> pelley: david begnaud for us tonight. david, thanks very much. moving to the presidential race now, republican donald trump told cnn yesterday that he would deport all illegal immigrants. so is he worried about losing hispanic support? well here he was today on a visit to scotland. >> if i get the nomination, i will win, i will get the hispanic vote. nobody else will. no other republican will. i will because i'll be producing jobs and nobody else will be able to do that. i will winlet hispanic vote. and i think i'll win it very easily. >> pelley: trump leads the republican pack in a quinn pack poll out today. he's at 20%. jeb tbuive busch and scott walker are the only others in double digits. on the democratic side, hillary clinton is at 55%. john dickerson is our cbs news political director and the anchor of "face the nation." john john paul, you've been digging into trump's polling numbers. what do you stee? >> reporter: well, he is at the top of the pack, but he has some seriously heavy baggage that's going to make it hard for him to stay up there. you know, he presents himself as this unstoppable winning force about butt in this poll when voters were asked how he would do in the general election against possible democratic candidates he loses to all three of them, and how a candidate is going to do in the general election matters a lot now to primary voters because they want a winner. the republicans have lost the popular vote in the last six presidential elections. why are these numbers so bad? 59% of voters say they have an unfavorable view of trump and even among republicans 30% say they would never vote for trump. that's more than any other person running. >> pelley: and what about hillary clinton? >> reporter she's well ahead of her competitors but she also has some warning signs. first, 57% of voters don't find her honest and trustworthy. that's a number that's been getting worse overseas time. and on another measure 52% of voters don't think she cares about their needs and problems. now, while these numbers don't seem to hurt her in the primary, scott, where she's well ahead they are issues that a possible general election competitor could exploit. >> pelley: john dickerson anchor of "face the nation," john thanks for being with us. clinton and others weighed in today on the gathering storm in congress over planned parenthood, which provides women's health services including abortion. today an antiabortion group released a fourth under-cover video that it says shows planned parenthood doctors discussing how to didn't have the body parts of fetuses for research. here's nancy cordes. >> reporter: the latest sting video is also the most graphic. it shows a planned parenthood doctor in colorado examining a fetus and isolating different organs. the videos have galv niedz republicans who introduced senate legislation today. >> a bill to prohibit federal funding of planned parenthood feteration of america. >> reporter: iowa senator joni ernst is a chief sponsor. >> these videos are hard for anyone to defend and hit at the moral fabric of our society. >> reporter: planned parenthood gets more than $500 million federal and state dollars each year. >> i was diagnosed with stage 2-b breast cancer. >> reporter: and launch aid new ad campaign this week aimed at keeping that funding. >> fididn't have planned parenthood i probably never would have gotten my breasts checked. >> reporter: in a "washington post" op-ed today the group's president insisted these videos do not show anything illegal on planned parenthood's part. but house committees are now investigating what's become a potent campaign issue for republican candidates. >> defund planned parenthood. ( cheers and applause ) >> reporter: democrat hillary clinton weighed in after a meeting in maryland. >> any reaction to the republican attempt to defund planned parenthood? >> it's another effort by the republicans to, you know, try to limit the health care options for women and we should, you know not let them succeed once again. >> reporter: but, she has also called the images in those videos disturbing and says that there should be a nationwide review of the way that fetal tissue is procured. republicans, scott are unlikely to be successful in their defunding effort because they need 60 votes in the senate and there are only 54 of them. >> pelley: nancy cordes on capitol hill for us tonight. thank you nancy. the government recommends that every child receive the h.p.v. vaccine by age 12. it prevents certain types of cancer. but a report out today found that just 60% of teenaged girls and only 42% of boys have received it. that's a much lower rate than any vaccines. dr. jon lapook is joining us now. jon, are yare so few getting the h.p.v. vaccine? >> scott the c.d.c. said the number one reason is that not enough pediatricians are recommending it. lots of possible reasons. the vaccine isn't required in most states in order for kids to go to school, but there's also a misconception among parents. they will say why should i give this vaccine to my 1111 or 12-year-old12-year-old kid who is not yet swlly active. the vaccine invokeaise stronger immune response when given at a younger age jell. >> pelley: and why so fewer boys than girls. >> again misconception. it protects against strains of the virus that can cause cancer of the genital track, anus, base of tongue and throat. that's in both boys and girls and later on men and women. you have a vaccine that could potentially prevent cancer and not being given enough and that's why the spokesperson for the c.d.c. said she was frustrated that immunization trait rates were so low. >> pelley: jon lapook, jon thanks very much. the most popular pickup truck is put to the crash test. a big league ballplayer is brought to tears. and an eight-year-old proves no obstacle is too great when the cbs evening news continues. when diet and exercise aren't enough, adding crestor lowers bad cholesterol up to 55%. crestor is not for people with liver disease or women who are nursing, pregnant, or may become pregnant. tell your doctor all medicines you take. call your doctor if you have muscle pain or weakness, feel unusually tired have loss of appetite, upper belly pain, dark urine or yellowing of skin or eyes. these could be signs of serious side effects. i'm down with crestor! make your move. ask your doctor about crestor. there's a more enjoyable way to get your fiber. try phillips' fiber good gummies plus energy support. it's a new fiber supplement that helps support regularity and includes b vitamins to help convert food to energy. mmmmm, these are good! nice work, phillips! the tasty side of fiber, from phillips'. ♪ ♪ super poligrip holds your dentures tightly in place. so you never have to hold back. laugh loud. live loud. super poligrip. get strong all day hold. progressive insurance here and i'm a box who thrives on the unexpected. ha-ha! shall we dine? today you could save an average of over 500 bucks. stop it. so call me today at the number below. or is it above? dismount! oh, and he sticks the landing! >> pelley: for more than three decades, the ford f-150 pickup truck has been the bestselling vehicle of any kind in the united states. well new crash tests were published today, and chip reid has them. >> reporter: the 2015 f-150 is the first mass-market vehicle with an all-aluminum body. in crash tests the crew cab version of the popular truck got the top rating on all five tests, including this one which simulates a vehicle slicing into a highway barrier or the outside edge of a stopped car at 40 miles an hour. but in the same test, the slightly smaller super cab version of the f-150 did poorly. the driver survival space collapsed and the crash dummy's head slid off the airbag and hit the dash board. why the difference? the super crew, which accounts for 83% of f-150 sales scored well because of steel components in the frame. ford did not add them to the poor-performing super cab but says it plans to fix the problem in 2016 models. the light-weight aluminum body on the f-150 gives it better mileage and the fact that the super crew did so well is an important development, according to david zuby, of the insurance institute for highway safety. >> there's been a lot of concern that building vehicles out of aluminum will lead to vehicles being lessafe but i think our tests show that aluminum-bodied vehicles can be as safe as their steel-bodied counter-parpts without any question. >> reporter: the insurance institute says it's more expensive to repair one of these aluminum truckes after an accident, but, scott ford vigorously disagrees. they say you'll save an average of $900 after a crash compared to the old steel version. >> pelley: chip reid with an intact f-150. thank you very much, chip. federal investigators want to talk to the dentist who killed a beloved lion. that's just ahead. re rheumatoid
