believe this debris appears to be from a 777 the same type of aircraft as malaysia airlines 370. this debris was found thousands of miles away on a remote island off the eastern coast of africa. it's been 17 months since the aircraft disappeared with 239 people on board. the flight was en route to beijing when it veered off course ceased communication with ground control and then dropped off the man after a traffic stop. the cop is a university police officer, but it happened off campus. we caution you the video in this report from dean reynolds is graphic. >> reporter: early on the evening of july 19, university of cincinnati policeman raymond tensing pulled over 43-year-old samuel dubose for driving without a license plate on the front of his car. >> reporter: when dubose failed to produce a driver's license, a routine stop turned tense. this video from officer tensing's body camera shows what happened next. as tensing tried to open the car door dubose unarmed resistd resistd and began to slowly roll away. tensing fatally shot him in the head at pointblank range and then called it in. >> this is the most asinine act i've ever seen a police officer make. totally unwarranted. >> reporter: joe deters is the hamilton county prosecutor. >> he should never have been a police officer. he wasn't dealing with someone who was wanted for murder, okay. he was dealing with someone who didn't have a frons license plate. i mean, this is, in the vernacular air pretty chicken crap stop. >> stop! stop! >> reporter: as for officer tensing's contention that he was dragged by dubose's car and in fear for his life. >> he wasn't drag. he fell backwards after he shot him in the head. he purposely killed him. >> reporter: deters said the car sped away because dubose's dead body was pressing on the accelerator. terrina alan is the victim's sister. >> we knew the video was going to vindicate our brother. >> reporter: officer tensing is now in custody and will be arraigned to nearly every corner of the country today. it hit 105 in bakersfield california. 99 in memphis. and 94 in philadelphia. in henderson, kentucky, a firefighter found it tough to cool off. conditions are even worse for crews fighting wildfires in california. john blackstone joined them. >> reporter: in the smokey woods south of yosemite national park, we reached the front lines where firefighters were searching for hot spots in the burned-over forest. a single escaping ember could mean trouble for already-stretched firefighters. seven days a week, 16 hours a day. >> yes. >> reporter: those are long hours. >> those are tough hours. >> reporter: fred johnson is the safety officer who tookis into the fire zone. >> the firefighters are are out in the woods hiking steep hills they are constantly exposed to the threat of dehydration heat exhaustion. >> reporter: the sound of helicopters overhead is almost constant in this fire zone. that air support is essential in such steep and rugged terrain. but on some fires now drones are getting in the way of that essential support for firefighters. recreational drones have forced the grounding or suspension of air tankers and helicopters in four major wildfires in san bernardino county this year. while these cars and trucks were burning on a busy interstate recently fire aircraft had to land because of a drone in the area. san bernardino district attorney mike ramos: >> if an intentional act of a drone was to cause one of these wonderful men and women fighting fires to go down and be injured or worse scenario, killed, we will produce proout you for murder. >> reporter: san bernardino county is offering $75,000 in rewards for information leading to the arrest of the drone operators. here on the willow fire, jane, the billowing coast guard is investigating an oil slick off santa barbara county california. it's not far from where an oil pipelieb broke in may. carter evans is following this. carter, what can you tell us? >> reporter: well, jane, it looks like a picture-perfect day here, but if you look closer here at the sand, this is what you find-- a thick tarry oily substance washing up, certainly smells like oil. if you take a look from the air we can give you a better idea of what this oil slick looks like. and the size of it ist. it's about two miles long. it was first reported by kayakers who paddled through the sludge about 1,000 feet offshore. now, most of the oil is in the water, but as i said some is starting to wash up on area beaches. not clear exactly where this oil is coming from. it could be natural seebage. there is a lot of oil in the ground here. but the slick has been spotted in the vicinity of an offshore oil rig owned by venico. the company applied for an emergency permit this week to remove oil from that platform. venico says there has been no incident at its facilities. this all comes as the cleanup was just completed from another oil spill just 16 miles away. in that case, a pipe line had ruptured. it leaked 100,000 gallons of oil in the pacific. the cleanup took two months at a cost of $92 million. that beach just reopened two weeks ago. jane it's still unknown exactly how much oil is in the water right now and how long it's going to take to clean it up. >> pauley: carter evans, thank you. the head of the taliban vanished from public view back in 2001 when the u.s. over the terrorists or they will share in their fate. >> reporter: on the first night the u.s. bombed afghanistan, scott swanson was the pilotave predator drone tracking a auspicious convoy of vehicles. now retired swanson told cbs news the predator followed the convoy to a compound but he was not allowed to fire his missile. operating out of a trailer at c.i.a. headquarters outside washington, swanson watched the target get away. mullah omar lived on to fight for 12 more years until, according to the afghan government, he died of a mysterious illness at a hospital in karachi pakistan. mullah omar's death would do more than close a chapter on 9/11. it would also create a void at the top of the taliban and give other terrorist groups like isis a chance to move in. jane. >> pauley: david martin, thank you. in colorado, a mother is trying to save the life of her son. the mother of james holmes, convicted of murdering 12 people in an aurora movie theater testified today in the sentencing phase of her trial. barry petersen is at the courthouse. >> reporter: a convicted mass murderer to the world, but a troubled son to an anguished mother, who communicateed in the final months before the shooting primarily by e-mail. >> i didn't realize that his loudest cry for help was his silence. >> reporter: arlene holmes said there was one critical moment when the theater massacre might have been avoided. it was a phone call she received about a month before the theater shooting from university of colorado psychiatrist dr. lynne fenton who was treating holmes. but, mrs. holmes testified, the psychiatrist never said her son was mentally ill. >> we wouldn't be sitting here if she had told me that. >> would you have been out there the next day? >> i would have been crawling on all fours to get to him. he's never said that he wanted to kill people. she didn't-- she didn't-- she didn't tell me. >> reporter: the jury has yet to decide holmes' fate, but the people of colorado have already made up their minds. in a poll out this week, jane, 63% say they believe holmes should be executed. >> pauley: barry petersen, thank you. tonight, the nfl appears to be at war with the super bowl champion new england patriots, and the next battle will be in court. tom brady and the players union vow to fight his four-game suspension for deflating footballs used in the of a cover-up, saying, "i did nothing wrong and no one in the patriots organization did either." at a news conference today brady's boss, patriots owner robert kraft came out swinging, calling the decision to uphold the full four-game suspension against brady unfathomable. >> there are those in the league office who are more determined to prove that they were right rather than admit any culpability of their own or take any responsibility for the initiation of a process and ensuing vehicles that was flawed. >> reporter: in his decision lead commissioner roger goodell accused brady of attempting to conceal evidence saying brady had his cell phone destroyed by an asaifnt. goodell's report says investigators had requested information from the cell phone which held almost 10,000 text messages. but brady fired back saying, "i replaced my broken samsung phone with a new iphone 6 after my attorneys made it clear to the nfl that my actual phone device would not be subjected to
