Now this happened just as i said, just after or just before 130 in the morning. The vehicle associated did stop and is cooperating with investigators. Right now. We have one lane open. California lawmakers want to put an end to repeated snatch and grab robberies like these. The state senate and assembly passed separate packages of bills that would increase penalties for organized crime. Rings allow thefts to be combined so they can be prosecuted as grand theft, and allow retailers to get restraining orders against convicted shoplifters. Das would also be allowed to pool resources across jurisdictions to result in stiffer penalties. Today is a good day for retailers. We think these will provide a number of tools for Law Enforcement, for retailers and for district attorneys that we think will change the narrative on how california will address retail thefts throughout the state. Republican Assembly Leader james gallagher. Its a good start, but it does not solve the problem by any means. We need to reform proposition 47. There is a separate effort underway to repeal parts of prop 47, which in 2014 reclassified felony thefts under 950 as misdemeanors. Not to say everything about 47 is hunky dory and perfect. And we want to help fix some of the ambiguities there, but we can do it without reforming or going back to the voters. 47 itself. The governor is living in a fantasy land, and he continues to say hes doing all these things. Meanwhile, rampant theft continues in every major city in california. Postscript gift shop near fillmore street in San Francisco shared these two viral videos of shoplifters casually stuffing items in their jackets and pockets before walking out earlier this year. Good morning, right now im looking at a commute here that is mostly good, except for one thing. And that would be westbound 580 at harbor. Now, just, after we went on the air at the top of the show, they ended up opening up all the lanes and so now were looking at some of the backup that was there has dissipated. And so we got somewhat fortunate in the fact that this did not occur during most of the commute time. In case youre just joining us, it was a deadly crash involving a pedestrian on westbound 580 at harbor. Underneath the overpass. There on the way to the richmond bridge, heading over to marin. That commute shouldnt be affected too much. Weve been looking at some of the other commutes. Now while i have you, i do let you know that the traffic on 80 eastbound has recovered. After they cleared the Construction Zone between hercules and the carquinez bridge eastbound, there was a little bit of a backup there this morning thats been cleared. So they kind of did get that out of the way soon. Highway 37 now also open for a while. We had some closures there. So were getting kind of lucky when it comes to some of these closures. They kind of did go away before the main part of the commute. What i consider the main part of the commute is between, lets say, five and nine. So taking care of business here a little bit before that starts at 420. Lets bring steve back in with todays weather. All right sal thank you sir. Well under clear skies, temperatures 40s and 50s front is coming by. That will help stir up the breeze later on 40s 50s on the temps. Maybe a couple of 60s hanging on but mainly 40s and 50s. In there, theres enough of a little breeze maybe to hold up some of these locations in the 50s, 74 down in los vegas, 58, 59, 60 Santa Barbara, los angeles, san diego and 42 arcadia. This system will mainly stay to the north, but we will get the breeze to pick up. Sunny but breezy today as that low digs in to actually the intermountain region. Its not digging into the north of us, but well see a cooler, breezy, windy pattern taking us friday into saturday. If youre heading to the mountains. Could be some isolated shower thunder shower activity for us. Best opportunity would be drizzle, although again with the temps cooling, the support for fog is kind of dissipating a little bit. 6070s to low 80s. One more day of 80s. Yeah the battalion chief overseeing the fire telling ktvu off camera a pile of cars taken to the scrap yard on wednesday for recycling went up in flames. Cars get left with gas, gasoline in them when they get crushed. The battalion chief agrees that cars often go up in flames here and at other scrap yards because of fuel being left in the tank, or even propane tanks being left in the truck during recycling, leading to an explosion, but nothing like like this. Yeah, its pretty. Its pretty big. The bay area air Quality Management district tells ktvu. There is potential for smoke impacts in the immediate area and downwind neighborhoods, and recommends people who are sensitive to smoke stay indoors. Clear skies out there for us here, very little fog, maybe teeny bit down towards santa cruz monterey. But even that looks pretty patchy at best. So itll be sunny for all today. Breezy. Could be a few high clouds north, but no big deal. Clear. Cool in the morning to mild 40s and 50s. Temps near average. Lots of sun. Breezy to blustery. I think temp breeze will pick up as this system slides into the north and east of us. Santa rosa, livermore, redwood city, san jose temperatures dropping 80, 78, 7376. Only a north wind is keeping santa rosa anywhere near the 80 degree mark. Cooler pattern continues, especially as we go into friday and then leveling off saturday. Although its clear im hard pressed to buy any low cloud deck when temperatures continue to cool down, the support for it wont be there, but all the forecast models show some low clouds ramping back up where i havent seen them yet. 40s 50s on the temps. I dont think these will change all that much here, but temperatures peninsula a little cooler there. Woodside atherton, menlo park, stanford, los altos 40, san carlos in there, pacifica, Half Moon Bay as well. So 40s and low 50s, 30s in the mountains. Truckee, south lake tahoe, mount shasta. Also at 39 degrees, you can see the system swing in. Now again, its too far to the north, but the tail end of that, the southwest edge of it, will develop over us. And that equals lower pressure. So sunny today. Breezy. And then that cooler temps will slide in as that system develops to the north and east of us. Cooler breezy to windy and maybe a little bit of activity up in the mountains. Thats the only really fly in the ointment. This forecast model still showing some drizzle, but cooler air aloft and cooler temps inland. Its hard pressed to find it, but 60s 70s to near 80. Armstrong was popular during his time at the oakland Police Department, but his move for the City Council Seat has so far received mixed reaction, as i dont really think that there should be like police and government because they might be like biased, you know, i believe he will. Like i said, hes, he did a good job when he was the chief, i think he was wrongfully fired, but, i think hell do a good job. At least eight other candidates are seeking the seat, and more may file. The group is seeking to buy Alameda Countys part of the property, as well. This is a moment where east oakland is going to change. We are in healthy negotiations and theyve continued and they are moving in a positive direction. And our objective clearly is to, be able to acquire that site as well. Now, the deal still has to be approved by the oakland city council. An introductory meeting is scheduled as early as next week. Just a general repositioning of the substance in society so that it is less stigmatized or disapproved and also theres fewer literal risks of using in a criminal justice sense, but also, importantly, prices collapsed. Now, just to demonstrate how big of a turnaround that is, back in 90 1992, there were about ten times as Many Americans who drank every day compared to those who smoked weed. Interesting. All right. Time is 449. Right back to Steve Paulson. Thursdays weather and doesnt sound too bad. Not at all. Yeah looks pretty good here. Temperatures continue to kind of trickle down, but sunny for all. Breezy. Temps near average, lots of sun. The breeze will pick up here. Its not too bad. Mount diablo is the strongest 34mph, but most locations are under about 25 mile. Tamalpais 24 howell mountains 17mph. Cooler pattern, though, is saying im on the way and it started a little bit yesterday. More so today for sure. Friday saturday before. It does look like somewhat of a rebound sunday into monday, a system a week. Its a dry cold front kind of going through, but that will pick up the breeze. 40s, 50s, mainly 50s on the temps for most locations 44 boulder creek, mid 40s. Felton, scotts valley, socal, aptos and there hollister, san martin, morgan hill and then low 50s san jose, santa clara, cupertino, saratoga and campbell all in there. 3435 truckee, south lake tahoe, mount shasta, 39, and alturas and elko are sleeping in again. I might have to fix them. Low is developing to the north. Its not coming over us. Its moving into the intermountain region. So sunny today, but breezy. Could be a few high clouds to the north, but probably only people in weather would notice it. Cooler breezy to windy as we go into friday and saturday, forecast models keep saying some low clouds and fog will come back, but with cooler air aloft and cooler temps inland, its hard pressed to support it. But well mention it if youre going to the mountains. Could be some isolated activity up there. 60s, 70s to one more day of some low 80s. Then itll all be 6070 next couple of days. Thank you steve. Well, this week is queer and transgender Asian Pacific islander week. As we transition from aapi heritage month into pride month, San Francisco was the first city in the country to celebrate the week, passing a resolution in 2021. Organizers say it is important to celebrate while also recognizing the discrimination that queer, transgender and aapi communities face. We are leading not only by cultural lives, by being both american and of asian and Pacific Islander descent, but were also navigating what it means to be openly lgbtq. So the fact that we have to take these different lenses to our lived experience day in and day out honestly makes life a little exhausting at times, but it also makes it just so beautiful and so rich and vibrant. Members of San Francisco pride tell us they do find it exciting to see the next generation growing up, seeing their identities reflected more in television and in movies. San francisco recognized the life and work of the late civil rights activist harvey milk. Yesterday would have been milks 9490 fourth birthday. He was the first openly gay man elected to Public Office in california, when he was elected as San Francisco supervisor in 1977. In november of 1978, milk and mayor George Moscone were shot and killed by supervisor dan white. It was an equally strong advocate for renters, for workers as for people riding Public Transit and he was really critical in the idea that the Gay Liberation movement needed to build coalitions and fight in solidarity with other movements for rights and for justice, as right said, milk encouraged all people to speak up when the rights of others are under attack. Teachers across the bay area were recognized at a luau themed celebration in oakland for good job. All right. Were looking. With the expectations heading into the weekend. Good morning, jim and pam. You hear the message every year that the travel records are going to be broken. Every single time we talk about memorial day weekend. But triple a says those travel numbers this year are really starting to prove how much people are more comfortable with traveling. Ever since the covid 19 pandemic in general, it predicts this memorial day weekend to be the second busiest on record. And thats since theyve been reporting that in 2000. On the roads, however, people traveling by car are likely to set a new record, with more than 38 Million People planning a road trip, a triple a spokesperson says memorial day weekend will set the tone for travel for the rest of the year, especially the summer, and that could be promising. We havent seen numbers like this for memorial day in nearly 20 years, not since 2005 that weve seen numbers this big, when we talk about the pandemic again, were not just talking about prepandemic numbers. We are surpassing prepandemic numbers. So that tells you a lot about how people are viewing travel these days. In california, that number is about 4. 5 Million People traveling for the weekend by car. For airlines, tsa is expecting as many as 3 Million People in a single day. Thats likely to happen tomorrow. Some popular hot spots on the plane florida, las vegas, denver, which is a new spot for triple as top list experts predict if this weekends numbers are as high as they expect, then we could see a record nearly 300 Million People planning to travel this summer. The state senate and the state assembly passed separate packages of bills to increase the penalties for organized crime. Rings also allow thefts to be combined so they can be prosecuted as grand theft and allow retailers to get restraining orders against convicted shoplifters. Its a good day for retailers. We think these will provide a number of tools for Law Enforcement, for retailers and for district attorneys that we think will change the narrative on how california will address retail thefts throughout the state. Its a good start, but it does not solve the problem by any means. We need to reform proposition 47, a separate efforts underway to repeal parts of prop 47. It was approved by voters in 2014. Well, fire investigators in pleasanton will be at the scene of a deadly house fire looking for the cause of that fire. It broke out last night just before midnight. Ktvu sally rasmus is there, and we know that one person has died and you have all the latest information. Good morning. Ali good morning dave. Yeah, this happened at the pleasanton hacienda Mobile Home Park, which is where we are. You can see the home that caught fire behind us. The fire, as you can see, is now out. But sadly, one of the people who lived here died in the fire and was not able to escape it. It started just before midnight this morning, and when firefighters arrived, they saw a woman who lives here outside the home, distraught, telling them that another person in the home was trapped. A team of five firefighters started to go inside the house to rescue that person when they experienced something, firefighters called a flashover. The battalion chief explained what that is and what happened. When the fire is contained into a house like this, the contents heat up, especially when the fire gases and the heat have nowhere to go, so what happens is, once it gets enough oxygen and its hot enough, all of that smoke and, flammable contents, kind of bursts into flames at the same time. He says from the time firefighters entered the home to when that flashover occurred, it was just three minutes. Luckily, no firefighters were hurt. We dont have any information on the identity of the people who lived in this home. The sign in front of the park says that this is a community for people ages 55 years old and up. How this fire started is something fire investigators will have to determine. Theyre expected to be here later this morning to start that work, but in the meantime, we can confirm one person died in this fire at this pleasanton hacienda mobile home community. The woman who lived here escaped and went to the hospital. We dont have any details on the extent of her injuries, but fire investigators should be out here later this morning. Live in pleasanton. Ali rasmus, ktvu, fox two news. All right. Thank you ali. Crews have finally put out a huge fire at a scrapyard in redwood city. The fire and smoke created air quality concerns for several nearby cities. Thick black clouds rose above the scrapyard near the port of redwood city yesterday afternoon. The battalion chief tells us the fire started at about 3 00 after a pile of cars and scrap metal went up in flames. The smoke drifted into parts of Santa Clara County. No injuries are reported, but local Health Officials urged people to stay indoors. I kind of just smelled, maybe like burning burning metal and burning, just burning metal and burning maybe rubber. We have a respirators that we put on. So we had them on. Crews had the fire under control by about 5 p. M. The air quality in the area is expected to be back to normal this morning. The aurora dates back to 1955, but it started sinking in near stockton and spilling gallons of fuel into the delta, which prompted a Quick Response from several agencies. So far, we havent found any wildlife that has been affected by this leak, but then also the delta waterway is its recreational. We have boaters out here. We have swimmers out here, and we want to make sure that theyre not affected by this. Fish and wildlife experts deployed a boom to keep the oil from spreading. San mateo coast looks like therell be more coming in next couple of days, but a much cooler pattern friday saturday before we rebound a little bit on sunday and more so on monday. Could be some isolated thunderstorms up in the mountains. They keep advertising it, so eventually i think itll happen there. Thursday forecast clear for most only. Patchy fog, lots of sunshine.
