Of the visible satellite show there are a few breaks san jose for some, but boy its pretty solid here for most of the north and theres just a lot out there. Maybe a little drizzle. So we are looking for when the fog rolls in. Boy has it ever last couple of days, thats for sure. Today is no exception. Itll peel back to the coast. It will be sunny, breezy inland, 60s and 70s on those temps. Well, youre about ready to jump into your cadillac cadillac and head out on the highways and byways. Heres the man to guide you through. Well, i thank you, steve. And right now we do see some commutes look pretty ordinary. Others do not. The bay bridge is one. Perhaps youre heading over to San Francisco and traffic is doing okay. Youre going to see a little bit of slow traffic there, this morning. But if you are driving on the san mateo bridge. Oh my, my, we do have a bunch of slow traffic. And this is due to an earlier stalled vehicle. Things are getting better, but its going to take a little while for it to loosen up. When we come back, i want to show you the nimitz freeway and parts of the east bay that are very slow, but first, lets go to the headlines. The president of sonoma state says he made a mistake, sent an email to the College Community making promises to student protesters without proper approval. Ktvu james torres live at the sonoma state campus here, where a tent encampment is now gone and that president is temporarily off the job. James garcia, were just outside of person theater here at sonoma State Universitys campus, and i want to show you the lawn behind me. This is where the encampment, the tent encampment used to be. The sidewalk next to it, as of just about an hour ago, was covered in chalk with propalestinian messages and even messages in support of president mike lee, who is now on administrative leave. We saw as University Employees came out and scrubbed off the chalk with water and brooms. All of this after the California State University chancellor called lee insubordinate for making terms of her in agreement with those student protesters, sonoma State University is part of the csu system. In a statement, csu chancellor Mildred Garcia wrote the message was sent without the appropriate approvals. I want to acknowledge how deeply concerned i am about the impact the statement has had on the sonoma state community and how challenging and painful it will be for many of our students and Community Members to see and read. The message shes referring to is a campus wide alert from president lee. He had met with students twice during their more than two week long demonstration. He says the university came to a few agreements, which include disclosing the universitys investments with a propalestinian Student Advisory Council and even considered divestment strategy strategies. He also promised an academic boycott against programs that are, quote, sponsored by or represent the state of israel. But the csu system says they did not agree to any of those terms. In the latest statement from lee sent yesterday, he acknowledges a mistake and says he sent his message without the proper approvals part of it reading quote in my attempt to find agreement with one one group of students, i marginalized other members of our student population and community. I realize the harm that this has caused and i take full ownership of it. I deeply regret the unintended consequences of my actions. As weve just shown you, tents from the encampment at sonoma state are now gone. The csu chancellor says that she is reviewing the matter and has already appointed an interim University President. According to the press democrat, some students here at the university are planning some sort of demonstration during the Commencement Ceremonies, which are expected to begin this saturday. Reporting live this morning, im james torres, ktvu, fox two news. Okay, james thank you. Time now. 704 well, today, classes at uc irvine will be held online after a showdown on the campus between the police and pro palestinian protesters. We are. Now, the protesters took over the physical Sciences Building. They blocked the entrance. Thats when University Police called for help. And hundreds of Law Enforcement officers in riot gear rushed over to the campus. Many of the demonstrators were detained when they wouldnt leave, as the university declared their protest was an unlawful assembly. No more business as usual. When 15,000 children were bombed in the past three months. No more business as usual. We all love each other. We all care about each other, our people, our humanitarian standing up for human rights here now, we dont know yet if any of the protesters were formally arrested or just detained. That encampment that had been on campus for a few weeks was also cleared out. Now, protesters who had been at sproul plaza on the cal campus packed up and went to uc merced. Thats where uc regents are meeting. They want the regents to divest from companies that give support to israel during the war in gaza, an Investment Officer for uc said the uc system could lose 32 billion dollars of its 175 billion in assets if it agreed to the demands of the students to divest uc officials have already said they do not plan to divest. But less than a day after one group of propalestinian protesters packed up their encampment on the uc berkeley campus, a new group has taken over a University Building and says it plans to stay. Dozens of protesters entered the anna head alumni hall yesterday, breaking boarded up windows spraying graffiti. The building had been vacant since 2022. At this point, its unclear how many protesters are inside university. Police are calling this an active crime scene. Some students who live nearby say theyre not alarmed by the demonstration. Im really glad that people are expressing, like, their opinion and are able to like, you know, voice their beliefs and everything, especially like in peaceful manners, like its not like theyre disturbing or like disrupting or like hurting anyone. The university would not tell us if Campus Police have plans to get the people out of the building or shut down the encampment inside, across the bay and happening today in San Francisco, city leaders and police will march to honor families whove lost loved ones to homicide members of the Mayors Office and the district attorney, brooke jenkins, will join the marchers, among others. The group will march from Margaret Hayward park to the steps of city hall. The group there has planned speeches and afterward will host a dinner for guests. Todays march takes place from 3 to 6 p. M. Well, happening today, people across the bay and beyond are joining a nationwide celebration promoting bikes as a way to commute. We used to call this bike to work day, but now the annual event is called bike to wherever day, a change that reflects the fact that many peoples work and commute habits have shifted since the pandemic started. Several cities around the bay area have events planned for this morning to celebrate and encourage people riding their bikes. Time is 709 or 708 and 50s to be precise. Lets go right out and take a look at the commute at the bay bridge toll plaza. You will see the traffic is going to be busy as you drive through the major problems there. However, the commute is looking okay if you are driving through there. I do want to mention though that the east bay commute is busy on highway four and 680. That looks pretty ordinary. However, out of the ordinary is a long backup. We have on 880 between hayward and fremont. It was set back by some earlier crashes. Those crashes are gone, but the slow traffic remains. 709 lets go back to the desk. All right. Well, its one of the most important cases ever decided by the us Supreme Court. 70 years later, President Biden meets with the family members of the plaintiffs who broke many barriers. A redwood city man tracked a stolen truck to the east bay, says he called police repeatedly but didnt get any help, who he turned the bay in east oakland thanks to a bluetooth tracking device. But when he called Oakland Police asking for help, he says it was not a priority. Ktvu is andre senior in the studio now. You have the details. You put a lot of work into trying to get his truck back. Yeah, well tell you about it. Now, that man tells us hes frustrated with police for how they handled the incident. Yesterday morning, a group of thieves stole a dodge ram pickup truck from outside of his home in redwood city. The owner used a bluetooth tracking device to track his car to east oakland. He says when he found his vehicle on the road, he called Oakland Police several times, but he didnt get any help. He decided to call us here at ktvu, and when we contacted police, things seemed to speed up, telling them i could see the truck. I have a tracker, i can remote start it, i can turn on the lights and theyre saying too busy, dont care. It wasnt until the news got involved. Were also theyre kicked into high gear. An hour later, he received a call from redwood city saying that Oakland Police had towed his car. Ktvu was present when he went to the tow yard to retrieve his truck. Opd didnt say whether they made any arrests in the theft, and for now, the victim says hes worried if nothing happens, the thieves will come back to try and steal his truck again in a matter of time, till it happens again. And where is it going to be found next . And what are they going to do . How long its going to take for them to respond . I feel like the criminal Justice System is failing in california, and its this is a symptom of it. He believes the same group cased his home about two weeks ago, and that prompted him to install the security cameras that captured the theft. The victim says he plans to install a kill switch on his tow truck, so that will hopefully stop thieves from stealing his truck again. Dave. All right. Andre. Thank you. Well, were trying to give people a heads up about the east bay commute there. Dave and garcia, right now southbound 880 is slow from the hayward area all the way to fremont because of earlier issues, most of those things are out of the lanes. We also had a stalled vehicle near the san mateo bridge. I want to zoom in now here on the south bay. Were getting a little more slow traffic, but you still have an opportunity to get out there before it gets too slow. So go ahead and get out there quick if you can. There have been no major issues there. Lets go to the bay bridge and show you the traffic here at the toll plaza is pretty typical and steve, we like ordinary. We dont like surprises at 716, as i talked. Toss it to you. Keep talking so well, steve, when i looked at the sky, its overcast. It is. Oh, my, my thank you sal. Appreciate that. See what you did there. All right i see what you did all right. Temperatures ill buy into this for a i think so everything for the rest of may is looking near average to slightly below. Does not look like any rain, but the temperature trend taking us into early june should favor near normal temps to below for drizzle. Sunny, breezy boy, theres a downright roaring wind for some out towards the delta, thats for sure. Just too much gray water temps have come up a little bit, but we get a little south southeast breeze and that has allowed temperatures on the water temps to come up. So instead of 49 or 50, theyre now 55, 55, 56, 55, but still theres just so much overcast here and we get more of an onshore wind. For some its generally most locations have a west southwest breeze, especially out to travis 2930 seven miles per hour. That is screaming napa, west concord, oakland west, southwest even out toward now san jose, Mountain View, palo alto. Thats a southeast breeze. Same for Half Moon Bay. Even sfo, although hayward and livermore have a west wind. 5060 vacaville brentwood bookends on 6050s for most. Theyre stuck. A few sun breaks in there. But look at all that gray. I mean, my goodness, theres just so much here. It would take a north or northeast wind or strong High Pressure to kind of erode it. And i just dont see that happening today. Drizzle looks likely nights and mornings here. Next couple of days, maybe not this much, but you get the idea. Theres going to be some drizzle. So a lot of gray over the bay some some breaks. But theres a lot of fog out there. Itll head back to the coast. Sunny breezy, 60s 70s. Just subtle day to day changes. No extreme one way or the other. A little warmer one day, a little cooler the next. You guys. Thank you. Steve. San francisco is just more than a month away from its pride celebration.
