Lost 30 over 30 people from their family entire, like bloodlines lost. So all of this really, like amplifies the need for us to be a voice for the people who dont have a voice. In a letter to protesters, usf president Paul Fitzgerald explained steps they plan to take after negotiations monday between the staff and students. Those include calling again for a ceasefire in gaza, giving a student a seat on the new socially responsible Investment Task force and considering a request for a second seat. Researching curriculum changes and the addition of palestinian studies. Students say they plan to remain on site, however, until they have assurances of more action. We know that were here till graduation, were here until you know, we get another meeting and we get clear defined answers on everything. The university sent ktvu a statement saying in part, the university is continuing to prioritize communication, dialog and deescalation with the protesters. We remain committed to continuing dialog and have not cut off conversation. There are no plans to clear the encampment or involve Law Enforcement as long as the encampment is peaceful and nonviolent. And back here live at the usf campus, the University Says anyone who remains camped here past todays deadline could be disciplined if they violate the student conduct code, and that includes a suspension or possible expulsion if they commit any kind of damage to property or harm anyone. So far, mike and julie, there has been no meeting set again to negotiate with the staff, and i heard that one student in your story there mentioned graduation. I mean, when is graduation . Could it be delayed, possibly even canceled . At this point it appears the graduation ceremonies are going to proceed as usual. And that starts this coming thursday, may 16th, and goes through the weekend. So they say that they are going to be here, but certainly well have to see what steps the university decides to take. Jana katsuyama live tonight at the university of San Francisco. Gianna. Thank you. All right. Happening now. Sky fox is overhead. The uc Berkeley Campus at this hour, where protesters there have begun dismantling their encampment. A uc spokesperson telling ktvu, quote, if the process is completed, the university will discuss the talks weve been having with the protesters in recent weeks. The encampment first emerged in the schools sproul plaza weeks ago, and unlike so many other encampments across the country, this situation here has largely remained peaceful, with uc berkeley officials taking a hands off approach to the encampment. The National Campus protest movement is winding down as schools begin to wrap up their semesters, and it was demonstrators taking on developers in Silicon Valley today as protesters try to shut down googles biggest conference of the year. Ktvu is jesse gary reports. The tech giants billion dollar contract with israel continues to be a lightning rod for propalestinian supporters. We want freedom, we say. How . Tuesday in Mountain View, old chants greeting innovators of new tech outside googles annual Developers Conference. Doing this at this conference sends a clear message to Ceo Sundar Pichai and to google cloud Ceo Thomas Kurian that you will be afforded. Not a moment of peace. Starting at nine in the morning, hundreds of propalestine demonstrators using this light to shine a spotlight on the big draw of this conference Artificial Intelligence. I think a lot of the topics were around ai and the new advancements theyve made, and it seems pretty impressive. I feel like a lot of the new advancements are pretty interesting, so im excited to see how it plays out in my life. Protesters saying googles selling tech, such as project nimbus to israel means death for thousands of civilians caught in the war in gaza. There is nothing that would bar the Israeli Government from using these Cloud Services for military purposes. Google is becoming more and more aggressive in their blade endorsement of and decision to profit off of Israeli Military settler colonial genocidal violence demands to cut ties with the idf mirror those made as protesters in april occupied the office of google cloud ceo, a approximately 50 googlers who participated in that and other demonstrations nationally were fired by the company. We sent emails to google to ask about the firings and about project nimbus and the demands of the protesters, but have not heard back. The place that we are now in history feels like a turning point, and we need to decide, all of us, how we want, innovations like Artificial Intelligence to affect our futures and the futures of our children. Though the vast majority of attendees in the morning were inside by the time protests began outside, those expressing dissent say this is one step on a long path to promote corporate change. Every effort matters. Every conversation matters. There were no further protests during the afternoon, and the extra police that were brought in from surrounding south bay towns such as sunnyvale and palo alto left the area shortly after the lunchtime hour in Mountain View. Jesse gary ktvu, fox two news the war between israel and hamas is now in its seventh month, and the white house finding itself being criticized for its continued support of israel and also for sending fewer weapons. Their fierce fighting in northern gaza is forcing more palestinians to flee, adding to the nearly half a million estimated to have already fled rafah in the south in just the past week, the us says israel has massed enough troops on the edge of rafah to launch a full scale invasion and is now urging the Israeli Military not to move forward with the attack. Israel has a responsibility to connect their military operation to a clear strategic end game. President biden has said a ceasefire could be possible as soon as this week, though the israelis and hamas have yet to reach a deal. Within the past few minutes, we have just learned the us will be sending a new package more than 1 billion in arms and ammunition to israel. That information just coming into our newsroom, we will bring you more details as we get them. After weeks of listening to racist and antisemitic remarks, the Palo Alto City Council has now voted to ban Public Comment via zoom. Unfortunately, First Amendment requires us to give these vile commenters a space to express their views, and so were unable to cut them off before their time is through. No matter how badly those comments by palo alto mayor greer stone came during last nights meeting after several people called in using racial slurs targeting the jewish muslim and black communities. At the vice mayor suggestion, Council Members later voted to ban publics ability to make a general comment via zoom. Although the decision was not unanimous. The want to show up here in person and do it, you know thats their right, but i think these Technological Advancements have had some unintended consequences. I do have concerns that, were just keeping excluding a group of people from our community that are not going to be able to comment, this way people will still be allowed to comment via zoom on specific agenda items, but not for general comment. New at five tonight, Governor Newsom stopped in the bay area today to announce an update to the recently passed prop position one. The bond measure is a major part of newsoms reformed approach to Mental Health and homelessness crisis. And now hes moving up the timeline here. Ktvu political reporter greg leigh with us in studio. You were with the governor in San Mateo County today. He doesnt want to go slow on this. He wants to go a little bit quicker. Yeah. Mike. Julie, the governor is saying the state needs to move with urgency on this issue this summer and ahead of schedule, the state will make more than 3 billion available to help build Behavioral Health treatment beds and sites. The announcement comes days after newsom announced cuts or delays to Affordable Housing and homelessness programs to deal with the states budget deficit, governor gavin newsom worked with state and county leaders at cordillera Mental Health center in redwood city. The San Mateo County facility set to open a new expansion in a few months. The backdrop for the governor to announce the states expediting funding from proposition one, which aims to tackle the states homelessness crisis. 3. 3 billion on the notice of Funding Availability will go out. We will quickly approve those plans because we have a new task force and strike team around this breaking down all of the boxes. Voters narrowly approved the measure in march. In part, it authorizes the state to use 6. 4 billion in bonds to build housing and treatment beds for people experiencing serious Mental Health illnesses and addiction. Applications for the funding were set to open in the fall, but will now open in july for cities, counties and organizations to build or improve centers like this, prop one encourages counties to be ambitious about Behavioral Health Care Services and to address the root causes of the many challenges our communities face. Cordillera has not received any prop one funding yet, but newsom used it as an example of what the state wants to see. To underscore the point, a woman whose son receives care here spoke about its efficacy. I wish every county had available for mentally ill clients what this county has available. Not everyone agrees disability rights california opposed prop ones passage and said in a statement. Drc opposes Governor Newsoms Behavioral Health system reforms, which expand forced treatment using proposition one. Money to build locked facilities will harm people with Mental Illness and Substance Use disorders. Prop one also reworks attacks for Mental Health services requiring counties to spend much of the money on housing and programs for homeless people. Newsom called out 19 counties who he says are out of compliance with housing mandates and are reluctant to use tools like care court. Its time to do your job. Its time to get things done. You ask for these reforms. Weve provided them. Now its time to deliver, and we know that any kind of transformation and were talking today about transforming our Mental Health system, any kind of transformation. It takes collaboration and compassion. Now, the governor maintained today, despite those budget cuts, counties have all the resources they need. He also announced a new website to track the changes to the states Mental Health system, and that San Mateo County will be an early adopter of the care court model, joining seven other statewide, including San Francisco, San Mateo County, saying they are all in on this program. All right. What about the timeline specifically on the money . You know, once a county or organization applies, how long until they would receive that . And the governor saying thats part of moving fast, right. If people apply in july, he wants them to be approved, if theyre found worthy within the next three months. And that money could go out by the end of the year. All right, greg, thank you. Yeah well, a dramatic scene in San Franciscos Richmond District.
