San Francisco International happening almost immediately after takeoff. It was an unsettling incident, to say the least. Welcome, everyone aftern. Im Heather Holmes and hi everyone, im frank mallicoat. United flight 35 bound for osaka, japan this morning. Forced to make an Emergency Landing in l. A. Our tom vacar joins us live now fromusfo with more on uwell, in a phrase, this should never, ever, ever, ever happen got, uh, uh, more than 249 passengers and crew on board n this is just something that really shouldnt happen. It does happen from time to time. And heres what we know so far departure weight, usually around 150 tons, the boeing 777 jumbo jet, depending on runway length, wind and weather conditions, took off around 200 miles an hour when the 265 pound wheel and Tire Assembly fell off and hit the car in the employee parking lot before coming to rest on the osaka. The plane was likely carrying a full load of fuel around 48,000 gallons, enough to fill five semi tanker fuel trucks. It has been cleared for a visual approach. Another problem on landing after the short flight to l. A, there was still more than 40,000 gallons oft the plane very heavy for landing at somewhere between 160 and 185 miles an hour. Looks to be pretty uneventful. Thank god. The greatest danger landing that heavyuis risking, however unlikely that more wheels will come off or collapse. Wow. There it is. But this plane, like all airliners, is so overbuilt, built to handle even further loss or collapse was a very low risk missing. And one of the reasons that risk was so low is whats called redundancyf on either side of the wing you have six wheels, so 1r wheels iy landing. And it was certainly able to handle a very smooth, controlled landing in a very nice weather situation down in los angeles on an extremely long runway. Now coming up at five, i have an exclusive interview gref aviation, coming up at 5 00. Back to you and tom. Back to the tires. You mentioned two in theufront. And then i guess 12 on either side. So thats 14. Was that one wheel vital for that airliner to land at lax . Were they ever at, uh, at risk. And 240 plus passengers on board . Well, uh, you want to land an airplane . Thats perfect. Any time you haveusomething that is missing, theres a little bit of risk there. Because the real question was, was that wheel leaving that truck of wheels the only thing that went wrong . Or was there something wrong with the other wheels . The dangeruis when you set down hard, uh, theres a slight possibility that you couldc pop some of thoe the ground. But realistically, theres redundancy in there and enough strength built intoc the system that itushould be able to handle this. A lot of people dont know that an certified, has to be able to take off fully loaded with its tailudragging on the ground so s was well within the safety book. But again, it never, ever should have happened. n yeah. And tom, im just those passengers on board that they, they could feel that that they, did they have anyng or did knowledge thatuyou know, falline plane would they have felt that on board . Probably would not have felt the wheel bearings, the things little ball bearings that helpe the wheels spin around. Now, if that is out and was ready to break, that would make a very you probably could hear within. Well hear from knn generally speaking, however, the spweight of the aircraft placent it popped off, they probably didnt hear a thing. All right, our tom vacar with much moreucoverage coming up tonight at five. Thank you. Tom president joe biden, just hours away from addressing the nation of what could be the most important speech of his presidency, the address coming on the heels of super tuesday, could affect the course of the 2024 president ial election. The tonight expected to address a variety of sptopics that americans are concerned about, including ongoing calls for a cease fire there in gaza, as well as border security. And, of course, the economy. We are joined live this afternoon by political analyst david mcewen, professor of Political Science there at sonoma really nice to see you. This is a high stakes moment for President Biden. How crucial is this sp this is the whole thing rit here. If delivery is one component. Theres another test. And the test is it forward looking . Is it Forward Focused . Is he talking about reproductive rights . How has he handled the gaza situation . What does he do about donald trump . How much does he mention him or not . And what does he do about decorum in the chamber . Who int, how so those are the is the political f joe bidens political careern President Bidens the freedo, insinuating that his opponent dt mentioned donald trump, do you think, or anyuof his legal woes during the speech way back inuthe 80s, Ronald Reagan talked about not holding the age of his opponent against him in a very famous president ial debate moment. Absolutely. What joe biden does tonight is talk about his opponent, whos his same age and notuholding thec be the delicat. Hell let democrats spin this afterwards. But youc talk about donald trump and the elephant in the room without mentioning donald trump, the elephant in the roomn n okay,c so how much of this david has to do with what President Biden says as opposed to how he . Yeah. I mean, look, the delivery test is part of the component because joe biden is famous for his gaffes. So how energetic he is, what that looks like is an important component. He has to lay out in an unfettered way, not just their distinction. So its more thant just a litany of, we did this, we did this, we did this. Hell start byc telling a story and that story is the into office ac where we are now. He has to not tell that story. As your great grandfather. Thats the inflation is still high. Groceries areupretty biden go ot and convince the american, American People that the economy is not all that bad . So we look at all thec look at 18 thats, right . Andc we are emerging in the electorate. They didnt primary. Theyreuabsolutely critical for the general election, and theyre terribly concerned about many issues. But all of that does come back to talking about health care, when youre talking about the environment, when youre talking about the cost of groceries or takingc one all about the pocketbook. So jo biden and democrats have to lay that case out. Thats the second test, the Forward Focus test, not just the delivery test. Okay, a lot of people, though, david, also expecting to his administrations stance when it comes to the support forua cease fire. And what happens next more humao gaza. Whatudo you expect to hear from the president on that front . n so if you think about timing and you think about politics, and most of politics is about timing, they were hoping was a ceasefire, right . That hasnt happened. They do have this. Theyre going to offloadugoods. Theyre going to set up a quasi port offshore to deliver goods to gaza. Thats the Big Development that theyll announce. But Foreign Policy is a hugely important because that also involves russia, that involves china. The degree to korea or other events in the world. I think thats part of the death of Alexander Navalny as an example, with his widow, there at the state of the union tonight. And politics, immigration isn ukraine. Republicans want reform on the border, but theyre not going to do it unless it gets does he does he talk about that . He does. Hes going to make an explicit call for 60 billion to really push that while theyre runningc out of ammunition. Anduwhat that looks like in ukraine. And kind of contrasting that hes going johy has not been there. We know now Mitch Mcconnell is out or is leaving. So theres a shuffle thats going on on the on the republican side in the senate thatuactually magnifies and makes it harder to get a deal done as well. Okay. So you talked about ths going to be discussing tonight, president isuhe hoping to get . Nikki haleys okay. Sp so hes got to get hes got to energize the has to give there for red tofu, red meat to democrats. And at the same energize those disaffected voters, those over 200,000 voters that voted in minnesota and michigan for uncommitted. He has to get them involved in the game. Democrats need a higher turnout. They dont have a litte bit of a cheerleader for spdemocrats the union has been kind he actually has to a Campaign Speech tonight in the midst of the state of the union. Thats divisive country. ulets get backuto age,ct because that seems to be a big hurdle for him. You know, fathe time is what it is. Trumps in his late 70s as outside of justt trumps close to me. Right. They talk about ageucomes wisdom, with experience. And that theupicture theyre going to lay out tonight requires experience in office that isnt divisive. Thats the about a moment ago. Not just ree rights, also the chaos of trump and laying that out that theyre capable of doing this. Thats seriousness test. That wasupartlyuwhat they ran on in 2020. Democrats big time. Cc3 f1 all right, david, i know youre going to with us. We have some more questions for you, including a look at the invited guest at the state of the union tonight. Werec going to talk about other issues that biden expected to touch on tonight includes the environment and climate change. And id like for you to stay with us, because coming up, im going the compana green truck revolution and tell you about the new fleet just delivered to a napa business. So bay area. Its pushing to cut Carbon Dioxide emissions from gasoline powered vehicles as well. ubiagi brothers, a Logistic Company based in napa, is part of the solutionuit recently posteduon social media its excitement about the purchase of this brand new fleet of ten hydrogenufuel cell electric trucks, saying its dedicated to Sustainable Transportation and reducing the companys carbon footprint. Those trucks, by the way, werec produced by nikola, based in arizona. And joining me live this afternoonuis christian apel, global head of product and programs for nikola. Thank you so much for being here. I want you to first explain how these trucks work. Yeah. Good afternoon, heather, and thanks for having me. Um, were very proud that we launched last year our tree fuel electric truck. Um, this truck works with a fuel cell system. So it stores hydrogen on board in gaseous form and uses that hydrogen together with oxygen out of the air then power the electric powertrain. That powertrain is similar to thec one that you wil truck. The truck has a 500 mile range and a lot of the. Okay, so what are the main advantages of these trucks . Lets say compared to diesel powered . Well, with these trucks, we can reach auvery, uh, superior performance level. Um the customers really appreciate how quiet the trucks are. And obviously those trucks have no local emissions. So theyre a bigc part in the decarbonization efforts okay. What about the fire risk . I do need to ask about that. There have been issues ind those concerns and that risk . Well, with new technology theres always risks that comes along and were looking forward. And we have defined a path forward foruboth our Battery Development testing that these trucks that were sending to the market now are safe for our customers. Okay, so how much interest are you seeing in these big rigs . Well, customers are very, very interested. The fleetsuare very interested. Um, we always try to get the customers into the trucks, get trucks, and thee very excited. Uml the truck is very spacious. The cabin less noise pollutionualso inside the cabin, you dont have the fumes and you dont have the vibration from the engine as well. And sor the driver. We were tryinguto make a better Work Environment for the driver. Okay. As we mentioned, biagi brothers there in napa ordered ten of these vehicles. How big of a market . How big of a focus is the state of california for your company its absolutely our top priority. California is a great market seeing great interest from a lot of fleets. Biagi has been one of our longest standing partners. In fact, they were ones to alsor alpha trucks, our first fleet of trucks we ever built. C in earlys in the real world. Okay and how much of that interest here in california do you believe is driven by these fuel, these vouchers for fuel cell trucks . n i think the incentives, the Vouchers Program plays a big of the vouchers for fuelucelltt electric trucks, over 350 are filed for our trucks. And it provides the fleets an ability to really becom
