Could get out. And from sizzling barbecues to a nice day at the pool. Labor day is celebrated nationwide, but this holiday is actually a day to honor workers. Well look at why this years labor day is more significant than in years past. Live from jack, london square, this is mornington to the nine. Today is monday, september fourth, labor day. And if you have some labor day plans, dont let the cloudy skies here total deter you because Steve Paulson has told us throughout the morning that the fog is going to clear and its going to be slightly warmer today than it was the last couple of days. Mcdonalds is being called out for the prices on its value menu in a now viral tiktok video, a user pointed out that the mcdonalds dollar menu didnt have a single item listed for just 1. It said it shows fountain drinks and frozen beverages were all between 1. 29 and two bucks. Mcdonalds introduced its one, two and 3 menu in early 2018 and offered four items for a dollar back then. Now now those dollar items have vanished. It. Hello and welcome to the nine. Andre, i think this is a similar phenomenon to people have noticed with the dollar stores. Yes actually having items that are 1. So a couple of things here. Thank god for that dollar menu because in college, you know, when i had to get money from the back of a sofa, from in between the sofa cushions to go eat because i didnt have anyutw to the dollar store because i still go to the dollar tree. You know, theres one in alameda. I go to and that is now 1. 20. And maybe the description dollar in this case is just dollar. It should be dollars dollars. Its figurative, not literal. Yeah. I mean, youre handing over dollars, just not dollar. It used to be able to get anything , ring a pack of batteries for a dollar, a mirror for a dollar, laundry detergent for a dollar. Now its a dollar. Its like 100 years ago they used to have the nickel stores. Oh yeah, yeah. They dont have those anymore. Why . Because you cant just. Just, you know, just hard to have inflation. But if. If thats not updated on the menu, though, for mcdonalds, it should be maybe they should do some rebranding or maybe theyre just calling it dollar menu. Just, you know, yeah, just a euphemism for less expensive. Yeah, less. Exactly. Yeah, exactly. Thats got to be it. Its got to be it. All right. All right. Moving on to this story right now. Today is the final full day of that section of westbound interstate 80 to be closed. This area near hercules has been closed off and on for four weekends this summer. Ktvu reporter amanda quintana, she is live near the carquinez bridge to tell us what drivers should expect there until the work is done. Good morning, amanda. Good morning. Well nearly empty bridge. You can see behind me just a few caltrans workers updating people on social media about the project. They have been hard at work doing these major pavement repairs. They say that everything is getting done on time. Its scheduled to be on time and maybe even before for tomorrow morning at 5 a. M. Thats when its scheduled to reopen. So its been a three mile stretch that theyve been trying to work on quickly closing down the highway over four weekends to try to avoid a big traffic impact. But the detours have caused some headaches and we could see a big backup with people coming back from their Labor Day Weekend vacations today. The closure is on the westbound side. This weekend, the detour takes drivers onto 780in vallejo past benicia and then onto 680 towards concord. You can then reenter 80 at highway four if youre headed up toward sacramento, though, that side of the highway and the bridge is open, the challenging stuff like pouring 9000yd t of concrete, 16 football fields worth that. Thats a lot of things like striping and cleaning up and making sure that the roadway is ready to handle traffic and that that takes a little while. This weekend is the first time that the carquinez bridge has been closed in its 20 year history. Many of us know it as the carquinez bridge, but its actually named the alfred zampa memorial bridge, named after an ironworker that worked on multiple bridges here in the bay area. He fell off the Golden Gate Bridge and was in the hospital for 12 weeks. But he came back to continue his work. And its fitting that this work here on the bridge wraps up on labor day. Organized labor changed the course of history for my family, my grandfather getting in the Ironworkers Union men. He got good wages, good benefits. He retired on a Union Pension for 30 years. He retired at age 65 and lived to 95 on a Union Pension. The that was his grandson and it was pretty cool to see him out here this morning. He said this is the first time hes actually been able to walk on the bridge since it opened 20 years ago. So because the bridge is closed, caltrans was actually able to do some other work on the bridge as well. So they updated some lights. There was a fire here three years ago that took out some of those lights. So those lights will be working again when people are able to come back on the bridge tomorrow at 5 a. M, thats when theyre scheduled to open here. But it could be earlier. Live in vallejo, amanda quintana, ktvu fox two news. Amanda, thank you. A chp motorcycle officer in another driver being treated for serious injuries after crashing at a San Francisco intersection yesterday afternoon. The motor officer was transported to San Francisco General Hospital with parents non life threatening injuries. The driver of the car also went to San Francisco general, but police did not release details about the persons injuries. There are surveillance cameras at that intersection. Its not clear whether the officers were able to retrieve video that shows the crash that happened. But the chp is investigating a shooting on interstate 580 that left two people hurt in oakland. It happened around 430 saturday afternoon in the westbound direction near seminary avenue. This is video from the citizen app at the scene. The chp says two people were in a car when they were shot. They drove themselves to the hospital and they are expected to recover. Officers say bullets hit another vehicle on the freeway, but no one inside was hit. Police have not yet arrested anyone for the shooting. Well, nevada Officials Say the bad weather at the burning man festival had nothing to do with the death of one festival goer. Now, investigators wont provide any other information about what happened to that person who died. Now, Rainy Weather on friday and saturday turn the Festival Grounds into a muddy mess. Some people were able to make it out before festival organizers closed the gates for safety reasons and as many as 60,000 other festival goers are still stuck on the playa of the black rock desert. People are still just chilling, as you can see around me, theres some empty camps sites, but people seem to have been embraced and are not worried about getting out of here. We know that its going to dry up. Therell be a lot of sharing. People proactively going out and saying, hey, ive got a cup of watermelons and some cans of tuna and some water. Do you need anything . Well, dj and music producer diplo posted on social media that he and Comedian Chris Rock walked five miles out of the festival before they were picked up by a passing fan. Organizers say theyll decide today when itll be safe for people to leave. Theyll hold the burning man ceremony. That will happen tonight. Well, for many people, labor day is the holiday that marks the end of summer and is celebrated with backyard barbecues or a day at the pool. But the holiday was first proposed as a way to honor workers and their contributions to society. The first labor Day Celebration happened in new york city in 1882. It became a federal holiday 12 years after that. But this year, many workers are using it to remind Corporate America of their value to ups reached a new contract with the Teamsters Union before a strike was called. The United Auto Workers are preparing to strike. Scriptwriters and actors are on strike. And American Airlines flight attendants just authorized a strike because they believe theyre being taken advantage of by their employers. Were all fighting corporate greed. The record setting revenues, yet we are still here without a contract. You cant make 21 billion in profits in half a year and expect members to take a mediocre contract. Work has changed dramatically since that first labor day, with worker concerns now including things like remote work and artificial intelligence. Along with the ongoing concerns about worker pay and safety for companies. The biggest concern this labor day is finding enough workers to fill lower paying jobs that have workers and customers meeting face to face. Well, new figures from the bureau of labor statistics show manufacturing tops the list of sectors seeing significant worker shortages with 550,000 job openings in july. Construction is next, with about 363,000 jobs available. The numbers show there are shortages of commercial airline pilots, too. Along with High School Teachers and school bus drivers. It should be noted that the us Unemployment Rate is at an historical low of 3. 8. Lets take a look at the businesses that will be closed this labor day. They include banks post offices, the stock market and government offices. As ups and fedex stores will not be open but will pick up and deliver Costco Stores and its gas stations are closed. Most transit agencies will run on a holiday or sunday schedule. A low pressure system moving east and temperatures rebounding. Heres steve pauls with more on our forecast. Hey, steve. Tv stations, though, are always open, always. Were here are no holidays and no, were here all the time. Here we have a pretty good fog bank that is beginning a slow retreat, although you can see the low clouds mid all the way down to hollister, santa rosa, probably American Canyon hiddenbrooke out there and maybe the cut off around cordelia looks like its beginning to make a little bit of a retreat. But here we go again, back into the fog bank. Kind of disappeared for a while, but its back 50s and 60s on the temps here in brentwood, 67. But everyones kind of stuck here. Theres not a lot of change. Tahoe and truckee both dropped to the 30s, i think 34 and 36 this morning. So did mammoth 70s 80s on the desert 60s and 70s up and down the coast. The strong unseasonably deep low became that low kicked out and that is now into salt lake city. That gave the thunderstorm activity over the weekend. That has now gone any new system dropping in . No except for low clouds and fog. Looks like a quiet powder out for at least seven, probably ten days. Gradual warming, but theres no sign of any strong offshore event or any heat wave low over cast will give way to sunshine. I think its already happening here. Nice to mild to warm, but still temperatures arent going all that far. 60s, 70s, 80s. I mean, it was in the 70s for many on the weekends. So it makes sense to rebound. Stratus co into tuesday wednesday then inland temps do look like theyll start to a little bump up into the week into the weekend. You too. All right. Thank you, steve. There are growing concerns about the threat of a major wildfire in california with the state now moving into what is traditionally a peak fire season for some, the recent decline in the number of fire Lookout Towers is adding to those fears. At one time, there were more than 600 lookout sites in areas of high fire danger across the state. That number has now dropped to fewer than 200. Cal fire says these towers and the volunteers in them play a Critical Role in spotting wildfires before they get out of control. We currently have a 360 degree view on a clear day, we can see up to 100 miles. I believe that the human eye is the best tool up in the Lookout Tower northwest, we can see the pilot peak range, which is where another cal fire lookout is located. Cal fire says the recent decline in the number of Lookout Towers is due mostly to a dwindling number of volunteer hours. The destruction left behind from hurricane idalia is expected to cost billions of dollars in damages. According to moodys analytics, the preliminary estimates put the cost of damages in economic disruption between 12 and 20 billion. The report says that idalia is expected to cost less than other hurricanes because it went through more rural areas and it moved quickly as opposed to hurricane ian, which ravaged the more Populated Areas of southern florida last year.
