Herman and daya came under Harsh Criticism for failing to use tsunami sirens to warn residents about those fires. He said he feared the people would try to evacuate. Uphill toward the flames 111 people are now confirmed dead and hundreds more remain missing. And there are questions about the cause of the fire. Critics say despite the high winds and fire danger warnings, Hawaiian Electric kept power lines electrified. It was not an accident. Accidents dont happen with this electricity. When we have red flag warnings, thats when you act and you make sure your equipment is in order. The utility is facing at least four lawsuits. Hawaiis attorney general says it outside group will now be conducting a review into the response to those fires. Whether they have direct connections to maui or have just visited people across our region are now coming together to do what they can to support those who have lost everything. Yeah and julie, two of the people i spoke to actually born on maui, so understandably, still really reeling from what happened back home, despite everything, though, theyre still doing what they can to help coordinating a unique fundraiser in San Franciscos Mission district that will take place tomorrow. Maui natives leah lindblad and Maddie Mcginn busy helping prepare hundreds of spam messages for a relief fundraiser in San Francisco on friday. The pair still haunted by what they experienced back home last week. And youre hoping that theyll get help, but there was no guarantee relatives, friends among the more than 100 that didnt make it out of lahaina. So its going to be continuous in terms of the grief, but also the support we can show the owners of hawaiian restaurant outer orbit in the mission, volunteering their space for the prep work. The fundraiser slated to take place on dolores and 18th from 5 to 6 on friday evening. Watching our community on the ground take care of each other, that has been a huge inspiration for us to come here and do something in San Franciscos north beach neighborhood, workers from the International Longshore union local ten similarly inspired to do their part. You know, a lot of us have like a personal connection with hawaii. Some of us have family all week long. Beau logo and his team have been filling containers with donations bound for maui. Volunteers asking for things like camping supplies, generators, baby supplies. We have pet food, many pets didnt survive. Others were left badly burned. Some now displaced from their homes and headed to area shelters to make room for them. Maui humane is flying out. 60 animals that were already in their shelter before the fires broke out. Well be receiving ten dogs, two puppies and 11 kittens. Were really excited to welcome them. Marin humane among several area shelters. Busy preparing. This is where the doggies will come. Beds and tunnels for them to play in ready for their arrival on friday. Well also make sure that medically theyre doing okay and then we will find them forever homes and marin humane says they also plan to donate all of their adoption fees tied to those maui animal animals they receive back to maui humane. Theyre hoping the dogs and cats will be ready to go up for adoption as early as tuesday. Hem,this a if anyone is they should call the shelter first. Julie you. A staff member and a neighbor jumped into action to maui bird consern center when the wildfires erupted. Security footage from the San Diego Zoo wildlife alliance, which manages the sanctuary, shows the two people using a hose to try to keep the fire from spreading. That property houses about 80 endangered birds. Later, you can see firefighters arriving at the sanctuary. Officials there say no humans or birds were injured, missing mans parents and brother have traveled from new york to San Francisco to look for him. Then on wednesday, they say police found johannes backpack and had two of his laptops and some personal documents. A san jose Police Officer is in critical but stable condition after being shot while responding to a domestic call wednesday morning. The first thing that went through my mind is its most likely going to be an officer that was responding to Domestic Violence. Call the Us Department of justice reports that in 2018, over 30 of all assaults on Police Officers happened while responding to family disputes and bar fights. Domestic violence advocates say most victims call the police when they fear for their lives. We always instruct survivors to trust their gut feeling, and if they know they are not safe, then just to go ahead and act on that because they know their situation best. This is the second san jose Police Officer shot this year while working for the National Fraternal order of police says that by late december of 2022, 323 Police Officers have been shot while in the line of duty that year. And 60 officers had been killed by gunfire. Santa clara countys District Attorney says gun prevention initiatives will be key to saving lives. Its hard to say whether it could have made a difference yesterday or not, but one thing we know is that that it will make a difference in thousands of Domestic Violence and red flag law violations that happen each year.
