All that was left was cinder blocks in their neighborhood, about three blocks from front street off lahainaluna road was destroyed. This is video they took of what was left of their house. This is my house. First, my oven. Everything we had in there is gone. Everything, including the familys two dogs and cat. We were told that the whole neighborhood went up within about 45 minutes. It was gone. So no one no one had a chance. And they say they learned their neighbors relatives are among the victims. Welcome back. A familiar face at oracle park last night. That guy right there coming up in a bit, how bruce bochy returned as a visiting manager for the first time in decades. Plus, the American Red Cross reported a shortage of Blood Donations this summer. And now hospital aisles are heavily impacted. Coming up in just a bit, were going to sit down with the Communications Manager of the Northern California branch to talk about how they are incentivizing more people to donate has a mission, as in as much help as they can. Plus this was clearly an evacuation problem. Most of our towns are not designed to be evacuated quickly or efficiently. Some survivors of the wildfire say there was no public warning to evacuate. Well take a look at why sirens were silent and the parallel to some wildfires weve experienced here in california in recent years from ktvu fox two news. This is mornings on two. Happy week one and on. Welcome to flight 405 right above the bay area which is just a big pillowcase of fog right now but if you live inland i got news for you. Its going to be a hot one today. Welcome back to ktvu mornings on two on this saturday. Im Frank Mallicoat. And im claudine wong. Dont let this fool you. Its going bye bye. I look at your forecast. Rosemary im like, oh, here we go again. Yes yes, yes. Coming into well, we are midaugust here. And so between now and midoctober, we tend to get some of our warmer weather, especially inland and even along the coastline. Well get in it on it eventually. Not for the weekend. We are remaining with partly to mostly cloudy skies for our coastline this weekend and temperatures should remain in the 60s as well. A little bit of fog out there, a little bit of drizzle for the afternoon. Do expect temperatures to climb above yesterdays highs. A better look at the numbers. Plus that humid feeling you may get this weekend coming up in just a little bit. Okay. Thank you, rosemary. Well, some residents are starting to make their way back to whats left of their homes in lahaina and theyre trying to figure out what to do next. This once beautiful, lush, Historic Town is now burnt to nothing more than ash. And the death toll continues to rise. And officials now say more than 60 have died since wildfires overtook that historic coastal town of lahaina. Officials recently letting people back in town. So theyre going to see the damage. Lets go now to fox correspondent jake kerr. Alexis straight from maui with what youre seeing there. Jake. Well, claudine and frank, people are beginning to pick up the pieces after what state officials are calling the deadliest wildfire in hawaii history. And its going to be a long road to recovery for those who were able to evacuate on time. Long lines of cars streamed cautiously back into lahaina as people are allowed in to assess the damage caused by Deadly Wildfires. Many coming back to see the devastation. For the first time, the normally vibrant and lush island covered in a thick layer of ash and dust. Cars frozen in time lining the street, abandoned when the flames closed in. The coast guard talking about their search and rescue efforts at the height of the inferno. Rush into the water near lahaina harbor to save people fleeing the flames. A surface swimmer deployed into the water to save five people, including two children, from the water. Those who lost everything are living in shelters, recounting their stories of survival. Try to heal together. A lot of us are posttraumatic stress, shell shock and we kind of can bond with this mainland. Help may take a while to get to affected areas. So many who were spared are giving what they can to help those who lost everything. Weve become a shelter. Weve become a Food Distribution center and Donation Center. People have been dropping off donations. Were going to rebuild. Maui will be maui will be rebuilt. The danger in the region still rage on as just last night. Another small fire broke out. Frank and claudine. All right, jake, thank you for that. Unbelievable sight, actually in lahaina as well, amongst all the rubble. One very, very special building that managed to survive that fire. Weve got some video posted on tiktok shows that the maria elena chela Catholic Church looking nearly immaculate despite smoldering land and debris surrounding it. Residents are calling it just a miracle and a sign that lahaina will rebuild. Look at that in the future. Well, the wildfire event is already projected to be the second costliest disaster in hawaiian history. It will become it will come behind only 1992, hurricane iniki, back in 92. As mentioned, that hurricane caused 1. 8 billion of damage. Its still too early to estimate how much damage will be totaled from this fire happening today. There will be a special tribute to the people who lost their lives in maui during an event on the peninsula. The bay area aloha festival will get underway at San Mateo Event Center just hours from now. And ktvu is james torres joins us live live from there with more. James, good morning frank, good morning to you. That festival doors wont open for several hours here but organizers tell us that theyre planning a moment of silence practically right when the festival starts. Theyll also have a number of different booths and events for information on how you can help those who are surviving and those who are suffering over on the maui islands now, weve learned more every day on just how much destruction and damage has been left behind from these Deadly Wildfires. Of course, all surrounding the island town of lahaina. More than 80 people now dead. About thousands of buildings, homes, offices all destroyed. Volunteer groups are now on the ground. Weve heard about strike teams from all over the country, including here in the bay area, helping to get supplies, information and resources to victims and survivors. We spoke to a red cross volunteer who lives right there on the island of maui. Theres need, of course, the bulk of the need is in line to and the devastation is almost total. And it is unimaginable. As somebody who lived here for over 15 years, its like a moonscape at the San Mateo County event center, organizers say theyre planning for a Hawaiian Airline booth to accept donations from people to assist in those recovery efforts. Donations not just in the form of cash, though that is how they prefer, but theyre also asking you to donate whatever miles you may have that will be contributed to some flights that will help people navigate from not just island to island, but also island to mainland as well. The festival is also Family Friendly event here too. So there is other things to enjoy. Entertainment, live music, food vendors, all of that as well. Now getting inside the festival is free of charge. However, if you wanted to park here at the event center to get in, that will cost live this morning from San Mateo County. I two news. All right,k you, james. Well, many survivors of the wildfires in maui say there was no public warning as those huge flames came racing towards their homes and they say mauis highly touted Warning Systems were completely silent during those critical early hours of that disaster. Many people were forced to run for their lives without any help or direction from hawaiis emergency agencies. I think the problem is focusing all of this on a particular agencies or a particular operating centers that may easily be over or run. This was clearly an evacuation problem. Most of our towns are not designed to be evacuated quickly or efficiently. Emergency response experts say they were very few exit routes in the hard hit town of lahaina , and they say it was much like the situation station we saw in paradise here in california five years ago when the campfire destroyed that community. People are going to have to realize that this is a problem that they individually and as neighborhood boards and groups need to take on. They cant just expect that some Government Official somewhere is going to handle this. Hawaiis governor is promising to investigate why those warning sirens were not activated on maui when this weeks firestorm began. And as weve mentioned, there are several relief efforts now underway to help the victims and to learn more about those, you can scan that qr code that was there on your screen and you can also go to our website, ktvu. We always have information there. All right. 738. Check a weather the weekend is here and its a little gloomy outside, but thats all about to change, right . Yes. Good morning to you. No gloom in this picture here of mount diablo. Just a little bit of haze, but closer to the coast , we do have the clouds, the fog , the drizzle out there this morning. And we are expected to remain partly to mostly cloudy and fairly mild along the coastline for the weekend. Meanwhile, our inland cities will go from upper 80s yesterday to low 90s today and continuing to climb into sunday, monday, tuesday. Show you that coming up in just a little bit. Lets focus on the here and now. We do have a very weak onshore breeze through fairfield at about ten Miles Per Hour. So were calm in oakland, novato as well as the santa rosa. And our temperatures this morning within a few degrees of yesterday morning. Most of us a little bit cooler to start the day 64 right now at sfo we have 59 in napa. Livermore youre one of the spots going to 93, 85 expected over san jose. A better look at the afternoon highs here along the coast mid to upper 60s expected pacifica San Francisco along the west edge. We have outside lands there today. So 60s expected there with mostly cloudy skies into the north bay. A beautiful warm 81 for napa. A little toasty in antioch at 93. Temperatures will continue to climb into your bay area weekend as well as the possibility of some moisture coming our way and a muggy feel, especially on sunday. Ill have a better look at what you can expect for the rest of the weekend and into next week. Coming up in just a little bit. Thank you, rosemary. Were joined by the regional Communications Manager of Northern Californias red cross. Thats martin gagliano. Martin good to have you with us. Good morning. Thank you for having me. I guess my first question, martin, is why . Why is there a blood shortage right now . Well actually, the blood shortage that we see in the first two months of the summer is something that we typically see at this time of the year. It becomes with people traveling and people going back home from from college and people just taking time for doing stuff. More fun than donating blood. But at the same time, thats why were here, to remind them that this is a particular time for going back and to keep doing what they do, keep spreading, keep giving the gift of life, and keep donating blood. Well i know many are afraid to give blood. Tell our viewers why its perfectly safe and really a healthy thing to do. Asy way to t time you you its an easy process and its a safe process for people whos donating. Theres no risk associated with donating blood. The most important thing is that its an easy process. As i say, it started with you going to our website and the red cross blood. Org. There you can just sign up for donating its or you can download our app to your phone is geolocated. So its going to find the closest place to your home for donating blood. So easy is the first step. Then our staff is trained and its prepared to address all the questions that you have addressed, all the fears that you have, the fears of needles is the most common, but you can you will you be we in good company and in good hands . You will. It will be a short process. You wont take more than 35 to 40 minutes to donate blood since you since you arrived. To the blood. To the Blood Donation site. Until you get your healthy and your jammies snacks at the end of your donation. All right. Well, needles aside, actually giving up a pint of blood is okay. Right . For the body . Yes. Yes, of course. Its okay for the body. The body recovers really fast for after Blood Donation. So there is no problem. Also, its important to know that we perform some sort of test for health to the donors prior to the donation. Just like blood iron levels and prior Blood Pressure and the body weight. And theres certain regulations and sometimes Eligibility Criteria that we have to address in order to keep the blood donors safe. During the process. We dont take blood to people that its not its not passing those criteria and people that can be hurt for a Blood Donation or could be bad for their health. We dont do that. We take care ofnd how often can a person give a Blood Donation . Well if you are a people can donate several things, not only blood, you can donate blood, you can donate plasma, you coordinate platelets , you can donate blood every two months. You can donate platelets every two weeks, and you can play plasma every four months. Well okay. And its easy to do. And youre saving lives, too. I think thats the important thing. Right yeah, thats the important thing. You every donation has a potential to save lives. Thats what we always say. You can change the life of people. Whos having a bad situation with after an accident or burn victims. People who have in his battling cancer, people whos fighting another coalition diseases or or diseases long term. So they need a transfusion all the time. And the only way theres no theres no theres no way to replace the human blood. The only way of getting it is someone thats given. So thats the most important thing we need people that donate to save lives, truly giving the gift of life there. Martin gagliano from the red cross, many thanks and hopefully we can get some people in there to help bolster our supply by all the best. Thank you. And heres a map from the red cross website showing the nearest locations right here in the bay area. You can find this map through our website just go to ktvu, slash web links. All right. It is a weekend and a lot of stuff going on. You got the giants and the rangers today. Youve got the big concert outside lands in the city and you might need a jacket, i guess, unless youre in walnut creek, where were starting out with some sunshine. This morning. Our inland cities enjoying the blue sky around the bay along the coast, we have the and patchy fog to start the day. And temperatureslike yesterday,r most of us. But then a few degrees or so. Well look at your numbers in just a moment. A view here of Storm Tracker two. We do have a closed off low right in here that is helping to bring in some moisture from the south. Its also helping to bring in some monsoonal moisture our way from the desert southwest. And with that, we do expect a little bit more cloud cover come tomorrow. Well see the mid and high level clouds today, more so for tomorrow. Maybe even a bit more on monday and tuesday. But lets focus on the weekend again. We are warming things up. Today is going to be a little bit warmer than yesterday and tomorrow will be warmer than today. If youre going to tahoe, its going to be a pretty one out there, a South Lake Tahoe, 48 degrees. Now as we get into the afternoon. Tahoe has the slightest chance for scattered showers into the afternoon, just 10 for today with upper 70s in the forecast, low 80s for tomorrow and into the afternoon, a slight risk of thunderstorms that will increase on monday. Right now, monday looks to be the best day for that risk of thunderstorms in tahoe. Meanwhile, for us here at home, starting out mostly cloudy at half moon bay, 57 for you there. Weve got low 60s along the east bay shore of oakland. And where we have the sun shining, temperatures are already beginning to rebound. 65 in brentwood, talking about the giants playing a little bit later today. Meanwhile San Francisco is expected to go to 68 during the early part of the afternoon today. Low 90s expected for our inland cities continuing to climb into the back end of your weekend well go low 80s for our bayside communities tomorrow mid 90s inland perhaps a additional cloud cover here so likely to feel a little sticky a little muggy for some money monday even hotter not much change on tuesday. This is when we may hit the century mark. Our inland cities with only slight improvement expected on wednesday. Meanwhile, our bayside communities will also be warm, low 80s expected will remain mid upper 60s right along the coast. Back to you guys. Want to enjoy the experience because thats what it is. So a better look at the extended forecast and the added humidity coming our way, it looks like for tomorrow and perhaps the start of the week as well. Coming up in just a little bit. All right. Thank you, rosemary. Well, the official death toll in those catastrophic, catastrophic wildfires on the Hawaiian Island of maui climbed to 80 overnight. That number is expected to continue to rise in the coming days as search teams find more victims buried under collapsed buildings and inside gutted cars. Also new numbers released just within the past few minutes say the wildfires have destroyed or badly damaged at least 2200 buildings. Most of the deaths and destruction has been in the Historic Town of lahaina. Video that is now being posted on social media shows those terrifying early moments of the disaster on tuesday. As you can see in this video, people in the ocean, they jumped into those waters in a desperate attempt to escape the fast moving flames that gutted the town. Hurricane force winds, though, created some dangerous and choppy waves. But the Us Coast Guard was able to rescue about a dozen people that was despite those huge flames and thick smoke in the area. They were fortunate to have been there during the rescues at a time when the smoke lifted. For them to be able to see the people who needed to be rescued. But it was it was a difficult, a very challenging situation for our small boat crews from station maui. The Us Coast Guard says its crew members put their own lives in rescue at sea. Well, one family in lahaina who was preparing to move to the bay area shared video of their neighborhood as they went back to see all the damage. Janet katsuyama spoke with them and also talked to members of the bay areas Hawaiian Community who are planning relief efforts to help maui residents. This is why. Oh oh, my goodness. A heartbreaking sight driving home to lahaina. Steph and kimo kirkman had been in the bay area when the wildfires tore through maui and rushing back. They saw their community in ashes and then they saw their home. There was no resemblance whatsoever of what we thought would be our house. I just knew that that was where our house was. All that was left was cinder blocks, their neighborhood about three blocks from front street off lahainaluna road, was destroyed. This is video they took of what was left of their house. This is my house. First, my oven. Everything we had there is gone. Everything, including the familys two dogs and cat. We were told that the whole neighborhood went up within about 45 minutes. It was gone. So no one no one had a chance. And they say they learned their neighbors relatives are among the victims. It was really hard to be able to see peoples houses that we know that now theyre gone. The grief and loss hits close to the heart for hawaiians here in the bay area. Patrick lindsay of hayward is a well known musician whos won awards for playing hawaiian slack guitar. Hes working with the Bay Area Community groups now and businesses to organize fundraisers in the coming weeks. Its trader vics will be doing a fundraiser. Thank goodness the generosity of folks we theres also a donor thats going to help match those funds for the kirkman family and many others, it will be a long road to recover for they had been packed to move to Castro Valley. So chemo a hairstylist could take a job at the jute salon in palo alto. Now that move likely delayed until october as they try to sort out the damage and loss, we need to just move on so that we can get to Castro Valley so that he can work in palo alto and we can start our lives over again over Jana Katsuyama ktvu fox two news. Well, teams of bay area volunteers went to lend a much needed helping hand residents of maui red cross volunteer tom tanner flew out of san jose yesterday. Hes all part of a team trained to deal with disasters. The red cross says its preparing to expand relief efforts if need be. Tanners role will be to serve as a liaison, getting critical information from Government Officials to the people who need it. My job, as i understand it, and it may change, is that ill be working with local, local Government Officials to coordinate what they think needs to be done by the red cross. And ive got a lot of people to help me. Both locally and in the local government. People are trained to deal with disasters so its not just me. Im a part of a whole team. Since the fires began, the red cross and its partners have provided more than 2100 shelter beds for residents and tourists evacuated from maui. Its also providing food and emotional support. Well happening today, there is going to be a special tribute to people who lost their lives in maui during an event on the peninsula. The bay area aloha festival gets underway at San Mateo Event Center in just a few hours. Ktvu james torres joins us live from that event center with more. James and claudine. Frank, good morning to you. Well, some would argue that this is probably the best time to talk about some of hawaiis history and culture and attempt to bring some positivity to a lot of the tragic headlines weve seen over the last few days here. Organizers say the festival will begin in just a few hours and pretty much right at the top. Well hear a moment of silence and a prayer for all of those who are suffering and those who have been killed so far by these devastating fires. Now, weve learned more and more every day on just how much destruction was left behind on that little town of lahaina. Its practically destroyed at this point. More than 80 people are dead. Thousands of buildings, homes, offices are all destroyed. Volunteer groups now are on the ground doing what they can. Weve heard of strike teams from all over the country, including including right here in the bay area, helping to get supplies, information received to all those victims. And to each of those survivors. I spoke to a Real Estate Agent in maui who says many of her clients bought homes in lahaina. She and her family are doing what they can to help spread information and supplies around the town. I other house and my dad, my you know, a lot of the men are in my family are boots on the ground going out to lahaina and distributing supplies and im, you know, holding it down on the back end and the home front and the Donation Center where i feel its the least that i can do. Back in the bay area at the San Mateo Event Center, organizers are planning for a Hawaiian Airline booth where people can make donations to the recovery efforts. Donations can either be in the form of cash or in miles. Those miles will help contribute to some of the flights that will take some of these survivors and evacuees from island to island. Sometimes island to mainland as well. The event itself, the festival is also a Family Friendly festival. So if you come out here, you can still enjoy lots of the live music, entertainment, the food and all sorts of different aspects that the festival would normally offer. Getting inside actual admission is free, but if you wanted to park here at the event center, that will cost you 18. Were live this morning from San Mateo County. Im james torres, ktvu fox two news. All right, thank you, james and we have everything you need to know about the wildfires in maui up on our website as well as direct links on how you can help. Just go to ktvu. Com. 808 lets check weather here in the bay area. Good morning, rosemary. Yes, good morning, frank. Cloudy its a cloudy start along the coast and inside the bay. But we will turn partly cloudy to mostly sunny, at least inside the bay, i think for our coastline today, going to remain partly to mostly cloudy. Were starting out with some patchy fog and patchy drizzle. Our inland cities already enjoying some blue sky, at least the inner east bay. We do have a little bit of fog reported over areas of the north bay. Visible between 3 and 5 miles. So were not seeing the patchy dense fog along the coastline, nor in our valleys this morning. The winds are generally light to fairfield reporting just a week onshore breeze at about eight Miles Per Hour. Were calm. A variable wind expected at the surface for today and temperatures today going to be a little bit warmer than yesterday. Yesterday, very seasonal. Today, slightly above average for this time of year. 59 degrees right now to start your day in San Francisco as well as napa, the inner east bay, where we do have the sunshine in brentwood, 65 for you there in our south bay, 60 for the afternoon highs for today. Again, a comparison from yesterday into today. Santa rosa, you hit 82 yesterday. Today going to 86, 76 for oakland. Low 90s in livermore. Thats going to be one of the hotter spots for today mid 80s expected over san jose. A better look at some of these numbers in our east bay going to be a bit toasty. 92 for concord in the north bay. Its warm but its nice. Weve got 81 in napa. Meanwhile around the peninsula, mid upper 70s to mid 80s, 85 in redwood city. Thats one of the warmer locations for today. Meanwhile, along the coastline, going to remain very mild. 66 in pacifica mid 60s expected there at outside lands for the afternoon as well. A better look at the rest of the weekend which does include a continued warm up for your bay area sunday and the possibility of some mugginess so ill explain that coming up in just a little bit. All right. A little mugginess. Thank you, rosemary. Coming up, a sign of hope, surrounded by despair, the thing residents in lahaina are pointing to is proof that the rebuild will come. Thats all coming up at 830. And its going to be a fun day in benicia. The annual peddlers fair kicking off. When we come back. Were going to sit down with one of the fair organizers to talk about the importance of this historic and long time tradition for benicia 63 and the peddlers fair is back underway for its 60th year. Now every year the event is held. The proceeds go towards preserving the historic saint Pauls Episcopal Church in benicia festivities are beginning right now as we speak. So joining us now to talk about the benicia peddlers fair, join my fair chairman, jeff jarvis. Jeff. Hey you got a nice cool morning. To start off, what will be a very busy day there. Yes,. Yeah, were were all set. Ready to go. Weve actually got a pretty good crowd here already started at 8 00, but its already starting to heat up. I love it. I love it. And for people who dont know it, i mean, you know, im a longtime benicia person, so peddlers fair is just kind of one of those appointment calendar things. And it is you need to give yourself some extra time for it because its just gotten bigger and bigger and popular and its crowded. Tell us about the penalties for, though, for people who dont know it. So the peddlers fair again, but started in 1963. Its grown from im in the courtyard of venice of the of the Episcopalian Church now. And it started here with just about 10 or 15 different booths. Its grown into just a mammoth event that spans the entire eight blocks of first street. We have over 320 vendors that are here today. I can not sure if itll look well, but yeah, its been walking to the camera around to show us whats going on because ill show you whats going on. I mean, 11 blocks of this. So we should tell people its really going to be just kind of a glimpse. There you go. Of everything that is going on. But, you know, later in the day, a couple hours from now, i know it gets to be wall to wall. People as you just kind of keep making your way down. The never ending boost. But its fun. I mean, i think i saw that your vendor booths were sold out. I mean, people show up. Yeah they do. They and well well have, we estimate somewhere between 35 and 40,000 people throughout the whole day that we have that come through that, you know, walk down to the waterfront and just enjoy venetia as well. Yeah. So what kind of booths are we talking about . Because its a lot of antiques. Its collectibles. Yeah. What started out is completely antiques and collectibles. I mean, you can see now weve got some good beatles stuff, some cars and, and collectible. You kind of come around here, im into top of the booth or the top of the fair, which typically has more antiques and collectibles. But theres all kinds of great stuff, handmade stuff really, really high quality, handmade wd mention, too, that it does it does help the church. I mean, when youre talking about where the proceeds go for this good cause. Yeah, yeah. So the revenue that we that we collect or the booth space themselves and that 100 of that goes to the to preserve the buildings. In fact, we just got done with about a 70,000 painting project that we just did with the church after last years winter. We had a lot of dry rot and a lot of problems that that that that crept up that we had to get fixed. So that and then we also donate 10 back to local charities of the of the revenue so important okay so i always like to ask to like strategy to get through because its food its community, its a lot of things going on. You could kind of just roll your way down, you know, at breakneck speed. So i wouldnt do that. I would just i would stroll. What are your insider tips for people who are like, oh, id like to check that out. I think the insider tips would be to, you know, park as close as you can. Parking is always a premium, but parking does turn quite a bit. We figure this crowd turns about 4 or 5 times a day. I would say stick on the east side and walk down and then come back on the west side and walk up. That gives you a chance to really focus on each booth as you go through. If you try to go back and forth, especially when it gets busy, its really difficult to navigate the crowds all right. Good tips. I know. Parking has been something in the past when ive gone there. Oh, my god. Just take another couple block walk. Its a Beautiful Day. All right, jeff, i wish you the best on on this. I certainly appreciate you giving us a little tour. I know its like a half block of what is 11 blocks. So have a great event today. Claudine, thank you so much. And come on out and see us, everybody. Oh, yeah. Its great to chat with you. All right, lets give you a last look at the info. The peddlers fair started at eight this morning, so its underway. You can get going and get over there. If you dont have time to leave, right . Just yet. It will go on until five this evening in downtown benicia. You cant miss it. Its on first street and vendors will be along first street from jay street to the waterfront and rosemary have been to several peddlers fairs in the past where it has just been cooking hot. I think this morning is perfect. A perfect start for it to before it warms up, it will warm up, right . Yes, itll be in the 80s today for benicia. So it is going to be a warm day, but not too bad. Some of our far inland cities will be in the low 90s for today, so a little bit warmer compared to yesterday. And heres a look from ktvu across the oakland estuary where in addition to the low clouds out there this morning a little bit of fog patchy drizzle to start the day for our coastline. Do expect you to be a partly to mostly cloudy for the entire weekend with temperatures remaining a pretty mild. Were also going to see mid and high level clouds that enter the picture. The low that is parked here over Southern California. And the wraparound moisture around it bringing in some moisture from the south, bringing in some monsoonal moisture from the desert southwest. And with that, theres even a slight chance that the thunderstorms for the sierra, not so much today, a slight chance tomorrow, a better chance on monday. If youre traveling to lake tahoe for the weekend or yosemite. Heres a view at the futurecast model. You can see how that counterclockwise motion brings in. Again, that moisture from the south. And then as we roll into your bay area sunday, theres even a better opportunity that we will see additional cloud cover if this remains on track. So for today, as well as tomorrow, the warming trend continuing as well as maybe feeling a little sticky for some, especially for tomorrow. 59 degrees right now in napa as well as San Francisco for the inner east bay. Good morning, livermore. You are 64. A look at the temperatures is expected for a san jose today. A nice little warm up coming your way. 80 degrees at lunchtime mid 80s expected to peak in the afternoon hours. Meanwhile if youre going to outside lands, its going to be partly to mostly cloudy and very mild, 60 degrees at noon time for oclock in the afternoon mid 60s. And then sun sets just about 810 these days was 58 degrees expected there and a little bit of an onshore breeze around the bay area for today 79, a Mountain View for the inner east bay, 93 in antioch and in the north bay, 86 over santa rosa. Your extended forecast temperatures continuing to climb into your bay area sunday. Were now into the mid 90s for our inland cities. Low 80s around the bay and we dont stop there. Expect it to be flirting with the century mark come monday tuesday. Our inland cities 80s around the bay upper 60s along the coastline so some nice beach weather coming our way to start the week and then temperatures come down just slightly on wednesday midnineties expected for our inland communities. Claudia okay, thank you, rosemary. Well, a native species wiped out of california about 100 years ago, coming up, the new evidence that the gray wolf is making a comeback. The Police Commission is seeking public input on the qualities theyd like to see in their new leader. Its been six months since oakland mayor shengtao fired the former chief, loren armstrong, saying she lost confidence in him for his handling of the Police Misconduct cases. The commission is responsible for vetting candidates and submitting a final choice to the city council and the mayor for approval. Now, this final candidate is rejected. The entire process begins from the start. Again, todays first session is at 81st Avenue Branch library. Thats at 10 30 a. M. Second hearing will kick off at 2 p. M. At the west Oakland Branch library on adeline street. Meanwhile, the oakland naacp and other Community Leaders are linking oaklands public crime crisis to the firing of chief loren armstrong. In a new open letter the leaders call armstrong an extraordinary chief who grew up in oakland, knew the city introduced crime. They say seven months after his firing, the city has still hired a new chief due to internal disputes atice review commission. And they repeated their urgent call for the mayor to declare a state of emergency. The statement added, quote, if the mayor wants to look at the root causes of oaklands 2023 crime crisis, we urge her to look in the mirror. Crime has mushrooms since she fired chief armstrong. We will work with anyone who wants to bring peace and safety to our city. We are glad the mayor now speaks of wanting to get involved, but words wont solve our problem. Start by declaring that oakland has a Public Safety emergency. Then take action. People who work at San Franciscos Federal Building on seventh and mission are reportedly being advised to work from home due to concerns about crime. Well, according to a new study on gun violence in california, the bay area saw the second highest number of gun related deaths in the state. There were 2300 deaths in the bay area from 2014 to 2022. They were drawing weather elements, but they never drew a person. So they couldnt guess. Paulson anyways, i digress. Microclimates. Microclimates is definitely the key word for our weekend here. Temperatures ranging from 60 at the coast to low 90s inland. Were starting out with clouds and fog and even a little bit of drizzle along the coastline and inside the bay. Well check in on your Current Conditions. Talk about this warm up, especially for inland cities coming up. Okay thanks, rosemary. Well, the official death toll in the wildfires on the Hawaiian Island of maui climbed to 80 overnight. That number is expected to continue to rise in the coming days as search teams find more victims buried under collapsed buildings and inside gutted cars. New numbers released just within the past hour show the wildfires have destroyed or badly damaged at least 2200 buildings. The American Red Cross says everyone can help the victims of this disaster. The best way to help, honestly, for everybody out there right now is to donate to red cross morgue. A cash donation will go the furthest. We will get it to the people who need it. The most. Cash donations are always going to be able to be utilized fastest and get to get the things to the people that need it. The American Red Cross is also asking for help from people who live on the Hawaiian Islands. The Organization Says it needs hundreds of volunteers to help staff at shelters and assist with response efforts. Well, residents will get a chance to go in to lahaina again this morning to see if theres anything to salvage there. Fox weather reporter max gordon joins us live just outside of lahaina right now, where some of the residents are waiting to get back in. Max, good morning. And tell us whats the latest . Hey, good morning to you. Yeah the curfew is going to be lifted at 6 a. M. Local time. So in about 30 minutes or so. And you can see on the highway right next to me all of the cars that are right now parked. A lot of people have been spending the night in their vehicles just waiting. So many folks are anxious to get into lahaina to see whats left of their homes, of their businesses, of their community. And i can tell you, after seeing it yesterday for ourselves, there really is not much left. The main downtown, the historic district, its just been reduced to rubble. This fire just swept through this community, tearing down block after block. Some people had to jump into the water to save themselves. Just a really horrific situation. Now, one of the main issues on the western side of maui is cell service. People have not been able to get service for pretty much since the fires started because these fires burned down cell towers, phone lines. And so a lot of people dont know whats become of their loved ones, their friends and hundreds still remain missing at this hour. 80 people confirmed dead, unfortunately, we do expect that death toll to rise in the coming days. Now another issue that were experiencing on the west side of maui is that some Drinking Water or some water there on that side is now under thinkable because its been tainted by chemicals released due to these wildfires. So just another issue that people here are facing. And as dawn breaks here on the island of maui, more heartbreak as folks get in and see whats left of their community. Guys max, i know you got to go into lahaina yesterday just from your heart. Your reaction, what you saw. Yeah, you know, weve covered wildfires in the past. Obviously, in california. Were no stranger to that. But every time you see a community thats been devastated by fire, it does break your heart. And especially in this instance where there has been so much loss of life right now, this is the second deadliest wildfire in modern us history. Thats second only to the campfire. Back in 2018. Unfortunately it looks like we might be on track to surpass that if the death toll does continue to rise. You know, it looks like a war zone in there. There are cars that are burnt out on the streets, homes that are shells. You know, weve been talking to folks and theyre shocked. A lot of people here have lived in lahaina for their entire life. And they know this Community Like the back of their hands. But now that its been burnt like this, you know, ive talked a lot of locals and they say its unrecognizable. They dont know whats happened and they dont really know whats going to be in store for them. Looking to the future, a lot of these people have nothing left. You know, they dont have a home anymore. They dont have their birth certificates, their passports, their ids, everything was burned up in the fire because there are questions to whether or not people got enough notification if they were evacuated in time. So a lot of questions moving forward. And theres been a lot of criticism about the response from the local government here. Locals here have been heavily critical of the local government, saying that its been mismanaged, that there hasnt been enough supplies for victims of these fires, that there shouldnt be a curfew, that they should be let in right away. So some frustrations are growing here on the island of maui. Boy, you can see the cars all lined up at the coast. I would imagine they got stuck there and just jumped into the water. Youre a meteorologist. Talk about the kind of the Science Behind this fire and the winds that were blowing and you had a hurricane offshore and it just that that wind must have just sucked down right into lahaina. They really didnt have a chance for warning. Almost so just a little bit of background. I am not necessarily a meteorologist. Im a weather correspondent, but i do know a little bit about the weather conditions that that came together to create these these really awful fires here. You know, maui right now is in a drought. And so the vegetation here is extremely dry. There was low humidity on the day that these fires started back on tuesday. And then the winds were whipping Hurricane Dora was passing a few hundred miles south of the Hawaiian Islands and winds here were gusting from 70 to 80mph. You know, us in california, we know that when wind conditions the vegetation o dry, that is ripe for a fire. And really, the islands of hawaii, they arent necessarily fire country. We dont see large wildfires like that normally here. And so the small firefighting force that they have here on the island of maui was really overwhelmed just doing anything that they could to stop these fires because there were multiple on that day. And unfortunately, we saw it overwhelm the town of lahaina. Yeah, indeed. Okay. Max gordon, i know that gate is going to open here shortly and youve got a very busy day ahead. We thank you for your time this morning and all the best. Thank you, max. And dont forget, you can get more on this story and more like it on our fox weather app. You can use your phone to scan the qr code there on your screen and go to fox weather. Com. Well, theres been an outpouring of support for those in need in hawaii. Cars lined up with people donating to survivors. That emergency shelters. Foxs gina spent the day talking to survivors, including one who had a jump in the ocean to get away from the fire. They jumped into the ocean to survive the deadly wildfire destroying their community. Joanne describe what happened. It was Like Star Wars flashing fire. It sounded like a giant blowtorch. And youre running from that. And we had to run in the ocean because we were starting on fire and we were in the ocean probably like eight hours getting fighting the water , getting pulled out. Flames were hitting. You still all things were falling from the palm tree on fire on you. Terrified saying i understand you couldnt even see because of all the ash and the embers. You just kept trying to wash it out with salt water. Joan hayashi remained in the water for eight hours until she was rescued, but many werent so lucky. I had to leave my car and run away with my uncle. He was knocking on my window, telling us to get out,tr neighbors to get out of their car. But they didnt make it. Were staying in the car and they didnt want to leave the car. So most of them had either burned alive in the car as i ran away. Hundreds are still missing and the once beautiful, legendary Seaside Community of lahaina is gone. We were devastated at what we saw. I mean, the destruction is like some place in a war zone, like it had been bombed and it was just the remainder was just burning. Do you know if your house is Still Standing . I just found out yesterday. Its not my house. Street is gone. Im so sorry. Im sorry. Um, yeah, its pretty devastating. That was gina silva reporting. And you can see her live reports from maui starting to get this afternoon and throughout the rest of the weekend right here on ktvu. And today, it is tough to find good news in lahaina, but this may be one story video posted on tiktok shows the marina. Monica Catholic Church. It looks untouched despite the smoldering and the rubble and the debris. All around it. And residents are calling it a miracle and a sign that lahaina will rebuild. Now, if you would like to help the survivors, weve posted a link with ways you can help right on our homepage at ktvu. Com. Time now is 839. A check of our weather here in the bay area. We say good morning to rosemary. Good morning. And we are joined by blue skies here in san jose. You are looking at 85 degrees for your afternoon. So a Beautiful Day coming to the south bay. We will remain with the low clouds , partly to mostly cloudy for our coastline and starting out with a little bit of drizzle, patchy fog this morning and the upper level flow coming in from the east. Meanwhile, at the surface, we have a very weak onshore breeze that will be with us at least along the coastline and inside the bay fairfield reporting eight Miles Per Hour sorry, inland cities not going to get any relief from that to cool pacific ocean. Air temperature is expected to range in the 80s to low 90s for our hotter spots today. Inland right now 60 degrees in napa. Very enjoyable start to the morning for you in brentwood. 68 with mostly sunny skies. You come closer to the water where we still are stuck under some cloud cover. 59 in San Francisco have not budged so far this morning in the north bay, a few degrees cooler with a little bit of fog to speak of. Rohnert park reporting a 58 degrees fair tax reporting, 58 as well. The afternoon highs for today going a little bit above average, 86. Santa rosa, upper 60s, San Francisco, 76 expected for you. Oakland and were looking at 93 in livermore. Thats going to be one of the hotter spots for today mid 80s over san jose. A better look at some of the numbers for the afternoon mid upper 60s from the coast into San Francisco. Outside lands expect you to remain partly to mostly cloudy temperatures in the 60s for the afternoon for folks that will be there enjoying the music. Meanwhile in napa you have a Beautiful Day low 80s expected coming your way low 90s again for some of the hotter locations including antioch as well as concord and into the south bay will go 79 Mountain View 80s for areas over san jose. Your extended forecast here even a little hotter for tomorrow. The hottest days expected to come in monday into tuesday. A better look at this plus the added moisture coming our way and the humid feel expected for the back end of the weekend. Coming up in just a little bit. Thank you, rosemary. In california, the department of fish and wildlife announced that there is a new gray wolf pack in tulare county. The wolves are first spotted in july in the Sequoia National forest. Dna testing of wolf tracks confirmed that the pack is new to california and further south than wolves that have already been spotted. Gray wolves are native to california, but were eradicated from the state in the 1920s. In recent years, those gray wolves have begun to make their way back from other parts of the country. Well, nearly 100 people gathered in san ramon to watch their Little League team compete. The western regional championship game against el segundo. The community displayed heartfelt support. Parents and peers say the players should hold their heads high because theyre still winners and their eyes to keep going and moving and working hard every single day, putting that effort. Its been taxing so proud. Win or lose. Its a win. Its absolutely a win. Its a win for these kids. So in for the parents, its a win for the community. I want to do the same thing. Williams port pa would have been a lot of fun for those kids, but it would have been. Theres always next year, next game, next challenge, but certainly a lot of pride there for that team. Rosemary oh, absolutely. How exciting for them. And well, coming our way bit of an exciting day. We have enjoyed weather for folks in oakland for today. Weve got some cloudy skies to start the day but we are going to turn partly cloudy and temperatures just above the seasonal average. Were also going to begin to feel a little muggy air in some areas, especially our warmer locations today, more so for tomorrow, maybe into the start of the business week. We have a low that is parked right off our Southern California coastline and the counterclockwise motion around it, bringing in a little bit of added moisture as well as that monsoonal moisture. We typically see come our way. Time to time during the summer months. And so with that, do expect an addition of mid and high level clouds to the low clouds were seeing out there. This morning. And again, going to be a little sticky for some this weekend. Heres a look at what were seeing in lake tahoe now. Lake tahoe actually has a bigger chance for thunderstorms, not so much for today, but by the back end of the weekend into monday. Right now, South Lake Tahoe reporting 53 degrees with mostly sunny skies into the afternoon. Upper 70s for today, low 80s for tomorrow. Tomorrow calling for just a slight chance. 20 or more. The bigger risk will come on monday for those afternoon thunderstorms. Meanwhile for us here at home, upper 50s in San Francisco have been stuck here under the clouds and the temperature hasnt changed all morning. Weve got low 60s in walnut creek and upper 60s in brentwood. So where we do have sunshine this morning, temperatures are already rebounding. If you are going to outside lands, its going to be a nice one here. Most cloudy skies and very mild weather by noontime, 60 degrees, mid 60s expected at 4 00. And then when sun sets about 810 this evening, temperatures will fall into the upper 50s with an onshore breeze. So do expect it to be a little bit cool, a little bit breezy for the second half of the day there on the west edge of San Francisco. Meanwhile, if youre going to oracle park, partly cloudy skies, a west breeze to 15mph, 65 degrees at game time, 605. So a pretty day out at the ballpark for a game. Heres a look at the afternoon highs across the region. Upper 60s and pacifica to low 90s inner east bay low 80s for the north bay and 85 over san jose. The extended forecast temperatures a little bit warmer tomorrow. Hot as we get into our inland cities nearing 100 degrees monday tuesday 80s around the bay very enjoyable weather along the coast. Well, coming up, the host nation and the womens world cup attempts. History see if they were able to pull it off against one of the remaining more matches earlier this morning. Four of the remaining six teams competed for their spot in the semis. England took on colombia in the last quarter, final match. Colombia struck first, but england fought back, tied that match going into the half mid second half. That shot you just saw there. The bottom left corner gave england the winning goal. There goes in before england, punch that ticket to another semifinal tournament. Host australia met france in what became an instant classic. Now that match went scoreless for the first 90 minutes and then in extra time. And what followed was a penalty shootout that lasted ten rounds. Yes, ten. And they did it all in front of a raucous home crowd. So the semifinal match ups are set for you. Four teams that will play for two spots in that championship match, australia and england. Former giants skipper bruce bochy back at San Franciscos oracle park all weekend long, but hes now wearing a texas ranger uniform. A and i salute and a tip of the cap. Giants fans gave coach a standing ovation during last nights emotional homecoming. Bochy was the giants manager, of course, during their dynasty years between 2010 and 14. That included those big three world series championships. He retired from managing the giants of 2019, took a break before he became the manager of the rangers. This year. And hes doing a great job. I my dad giants will host the rangers at 6 00 tonight for game two of their weekend series. Last night, texas manager bochy beat his former team up 2 to 1. A saturday morning, sunrise on maui. But it is a much different situation this weekend. Another long day ahead for people who live there. This is a live picture of what maui looks like this morning after those Deadly Wildfires swept through lahaina. And in an attempt to bring some positivity after days of some tragic news, the aloha festival is going on this morning right here at the San Mateo County event center. Well tell you the opportunities you have to help some of those victims on the islands coming up. Plus, were getting enough coast look at the frightening moments after people ran from the flames and jumped in the ocean to try to get away from those flames from fox two news, this is mornings on two. Good morning to you. Taking a live look over oakland this morning and you can see still gray, gray, gray out there, at least where were sitting. I know in other parts of the bay area, i think they are seeing some sunshine, but it is great in a lot of spots that will not last. Suns already fighting through. And i think the suns going to win this one. Welcome to mornings on two. It is saturday, august 12th. Im claudine wong. It usually does. Hi, everyone. Im Frank Mallicoat. Not a one. Lets get you out of the gate with a little weather check. Sunshine sign behind us now. Its happening. A very summerlike pattern in place right . Weve got cloudy skies, mild at the coast, going to be toasty inland. Temperatures will range from the mid 80s to low 90s for a hotter spots today, even a bit hotter tomorrow. We have a little moisture coming our way that could make it feel a bit hot amid a better look at the pattern in place for your weekend and how long this heat up is going to last. Coming up. Thank you, rosemary. Topping our news here at nine, the official death toll in the catastrophic wildfires on the Hawaiian Island of maui climbed to 80 overnight. And that number expected to continue to rise in the coming days as search teams find more and more victims buried and burned under collapsed buildings and inside gutted cars. And the new numbers released just a short time ago show the wildfire has damaged or destroyed more than 2200 buildings on maui. Most of the deaths and destructions have been in that Historic Town of lahaina. A video now being posted on social media shows that terrifying early moments of the disaster early tuesday. You can see people jumping into the ocean waters in a desperate attempt to escape from the fast moving flames that gutted the entire town. Some say they were in the water for up to eight hours. Hurricane force winds created dangerous, choppy waves as well. But the Us Coast Guard still managed to rescue a dozen people under some very, very dangerous conditions. I think youre familiar with the incredible winds that were impacting lahaina that night. Reports of up to 60mph. So our crews did encounter those winds and some rough seas as a result of that. The Us Coast Guard says its crews rescued the people in the water while there was thick smoke in the air and dangerous flames in that area. Happening today, there will be a special tribute to the people who lost their lives in maui. This will be during an event in the peninsula. The bay area aloha festival gets underway at the San Mateo Event Center in just a few hours. And lets go live now to ktvu james torres with more on that. And it seems to be a place, james, that that as youve talked about this morning, a place to come together. People feel helpless here, right . They want to help. They want to really do what they can. And this is kind of a place where they can kind of come together, get support and support. Claudia well, this is a festival thats been going on in the bay area for about 28 years, only about a dozen years here at the San Mateo Events Center. You see some of the setup behind me here. Doors will set to open and a little more than an hour from now. But to talk a little bit more about that, mr. Bush, here you are, a Vice President of pica, which is the organization that kind of puts us all together. The Pacific Islander community association. Thank you so much for joining us this morning. Just in general, does this seem tough to put on right now in the middle of some of the headlines weve seen or to you, does this seem like its very necessary to put on . It would be necessary to put on because this we can use as a as as a conduit for informative reasons for to development of possible resources that are here and how to connect because some of the people that are here have family members that have been impacted by their and they can give us the updated information much more and maybe in in in addition to what we already know during the news. So they can give us exactly whats on the ground over there. More importantly is to determine what organizations that can best help the efforts right now. And at one point, there is the Pacific Island Cultural Association has were not in a planning at this point because we need to determine where the resources are at. How can the best accommodate what really needs and what are the connections in their such as the local officials that are over there. The red cross . These organizations can be very helpful in terms of moving what we need to move in that direction. So what we need to do determine where these organizations are and how can they best support the effort right now. And in terms of helping me, we can start right here at the festival. Theres a Hawaiian Airlines tent not too far from where were standing right now. Give me a little idea of what their involvement is. Hawaiian airlines, in their effort to this are our are asking that those those that have frequented the Hawaiian Airlines have accumulated the what they call their miles, extra miles. And theyd like to donate those miles to the day effort. They can get more information at the Hawaiian Airlines tent. I give you how how their volunteer efforts will be utilized and so forth. And aside from that, i mean, this festival is still meant to be a Family Friendly, fun event here. I mean, theres still vendors, theres still entertainment, lots of food. You can try here. So, you know, if im coming here as someone who just wants to enjoy the day, you know what all will i get exposed to . Well, what you can get exposed to is want to know exactly whats what, what do they do in the Hawaiian Islands in terms of dance, in terms of cultural activities . You can participate in such as learning the language, maybe learning a little bit about the culture itself, how do the Pacific Islanders live . And you can participate in that if you are a tourist plan on going to hawaii , heres what you can get initiated as to what you can expect to happen when you go there. Why not . Mr. Bush, i appreciate you joining us early this morning. Thank you so much, doris here officially set to open at about 1030 this morning, right around that time. Well hear a moment of silence and a prayer for those victims and survivors going through what weve been seeing over in maui. If you want to actually come out here, admission into the festival is free. But if you plan on parking at the event center, that will cost you about 18. Roll out this morning from San Mateo County, im james torres, ktvu fox two news. I thank you for that. Joining us now with some insight as former fema coordinator mark navarro and mark, weve been chit chatting a little bit. 80 have died more will be recovered. Is there any hope and in the next 3 or 4 days, what what will be happening there . Well, we always want to have hope, right. But the likelihood of somebody surviving this is probably pretty small. And were going to continue their doing search and rescue. They brought cadaver dogs in. So theyre you know, theyre searching all of those remains and theyre going to comb through every inch of it to make sure they find everybody and identify everybody so they can notify the next to kin. Whats also happening is theyre bringing in, if you will, temporary infrastructure for debris cleanup, cellular tower system, so people can communicate. Theyre bringing in meals, cots, diaper kits, beds, so people have places to stay. Theyre arranging the hotels have stepped up to provide some housing for folks. If anybody is affected by it, they can register and get temporary housing assistance. Its a its going to be a long recovery. How about just lodging quickly . Theres one road in maui to get in. Youve got the resort hotels, which are north of lahaina. Theyre going to need supplies as well. And you got no communication cell towers are down right. How do you do it . Well, you know, fema plus the private sector partnering up. Theyre good about opening up and getting temporary solutions in there in terms of tourists coming back to that area, thats going to be difficult. Most if not all of those hotels. My assumption will be will be housed with workers, recover key workers, people who live there trying to find location, you know, their families, pets, everythings there. What was there. So they want to try and stay as close as possible. A lot of them will go over to oahu and probably the mainland. But again, theyll get assistance to help them with housing. But its going to take some time to get this process in place. There are dozens of hotels north of lahaina. So you i mean, hawaii as we know it, its not going to be the same there for months, maybe years. Yeah certainly from a heritage standpoint and the culture there. Right. Thats going to change. I have seen many, many communities go through devastating events like this and be able to recover even better than when they started out. So fingers crossed, thats where were going to get to here. But to your point, they also recognize the governor recognizes that the economy of that state is driven by tourism. So theyve got to make sure that not only that to take care of the locals in the line of area, but to your point, get that road opened up so they can get over to the resorts and try and restore that tourism. The town of lahaina, i mean, paradise is still rebuilding five years later after the campfire. It takes time. It does take time. And unfortunately, the way were going here, this may be the worst fire in the United States history over the last 100 years. Weve loss of life. So its going to take some time. You dont want to rush the recovery. You want to make sure you you can recover everybody. Can we talk about the warnings, the sirens that a lot of people had no warning. Was it it just happened too quickly or was there a flaw there . Well, its twofold. They they did send out an emergency notifications to peoples phone, which is the most appropriate way to do it and most effective. Right now. We know that because it can go directly to somebodys cell phone. So everybody gets it. The sirens that they have, from what i understand, they lost power, like when the electricity went out, shut down cell phones, the towers went down to they dont have emergency power, backup. So there was some notification, but to the point that it just came so fast through an island area, theres not much backup. Yeah. Mark, thank you for your insight. Youre welcome. Take a lot of time. Yeah we appreciate it. Youre welcome. For the very latest updates on the situation in maui, you can head over to our website. Thats at ktvu. Com. Well, a sign of hope surrounded by despair, what residents in lahaina are pointing to as proof that they will rebuild. Thats coming up. Also coming up next, were joined by the cofounder of sidequest to discuss two weeks of film and creative city thats ready to be shown showing off on the south bay. Its all coming your way. Films, shorts and artists from around the world will be here in the bay area throughout the end of the month. So joining us now, halston hussey, the cofounder and ceo of santa claus. Thanks so much for joining us. Its exciting week for you. Im sure youre exhausted. I feel great because were energized. Thats the theme. So ive got to be. So tell me about this festival in silicon valley. Its really become a place where were innovation and creativity. And this is what you want celebrated positivity. Absolutely. We discover great art world in the United States premieres and technology that affects art. But most importantly, we discover other people. You know, we get together to celebrate and we share. Thats the big deal about sidequest. And its a lot of its a lot of films, 150 plus this. Yeah yes. About 84 United States and World Premieres and artists coming in, 350 from 54 countries and all around the United States. So. Wow. And what do you folks how do you find that its grown that why people want to be a part of every festival seems to have its own its own space. And really, as the world has kind of changed, right, getting people back to kind of enjoy the spaces that were in, what is it about santa claus that makes it unique . Well, weve always been known as the bastion and the vanguard discovery showcase of technology as its revolution ized film filmmaking, distribution. But to me, the best thing about sonic west and what most distinguished is it is the caring and the loving, the joyful people that attend. We have always been super inclusive, welcoming folks from all walks of life, all ways of thanking cultures. Its wonderful. So that energy of cynics, thats a silicon valley. Its the world living together. And so we love to gather. Its an amazing message. I know youve been very passionate about that and bringing it to the world. Can we talk about some specifics . Youve got youve got Opening Night and youve got some big movies. But i think also people when they see these like, oh, i recognize those folks. You know what . I recognize these actors and these people who are part of these projects. Im going to dive into a few of them just so people can just get a little taste of just a couple of the 150 plus films that youve got there. East bay constance wu is a favorite of mine and so i would love to see this film. Tell me about this this film. Its kind of comedy, kind of drama, right . Its a wonderful comedy, mainly a little bit of drama. Constance wu, a great korean actor, also. Its really about Asian Americans and americans trying to come to terms with this pressure. We have about you got to be happy and you got to be successful. Yeah, well, you dont have to be. I may feel some of that pressure a little bit. Yeah. So you know, thats what really brings this film into everyones life. And i got to tell you, i was watching the trailer and it was like winding me through. Im like, oh, thats an interesting storyline. Oh, thats an interesting storyline. Its a little bit of a surprising film. Thats a great one. Ive heard, and its made from the bay area. Right. Okay, egg it and twinkie. This is about an Asian American teenager kind of takes off, has a very important conversation with her parents and then kind of road trips. Right. Its a wonderful film about relationships and friendships, and thats the core of it. And young friendship, hopes and an older friendship. So whatever form those take. So thats what i want to get people that people love. This film, weve seen it. Its the World Premiere center quest but those of us on the inside, you got to see this movie. It has a lot of points. And right. And i think to your point, its a lot about people. Its just about that humanity and that Human Element in in place as is gringa, which is another steve zahn and i did watch this film. You guys gave me a chance to kind of preview it. Fantastic i mean, i watched it last night. It just really compelling with all these elements that that do. Its interesting to see what you connect with. I mean, weve got soccer here, too, but thats only like thats only a section of it, right . I mean, finding your father, going to mexico to find him a really great multiethnic film, but really about humanity, which is universal. And so thats a big theme of quest this year. We have this energized theme, but our films have to do that. And our artists. So we have a lot of comedies. You mentioned a few of them and thrillers and inspiring movies because people need that. They need that. We need that. Yes, we do. All right. Do you have a strategy to get through senate quest that people are saying, okay, i want to do it . How do i do it . Last couple of weeks, you just come into senate quest, dawg. Its very affordable. Its welcoming. You dont have to worry. You dont have to put on a tuxedo to come to the partys. Come as you are. We have a great time. We want you there often. Thank you so much. I appreciate it. Good luck on this great event. Always great to see it hit the silicon valley. And a reminder to you that the senate quest film and creativity festival, there is the details on your screen starts on tuesday at the california theater. California and hammer theater in san jose. And then the following week, youll also have some events at the showplace icon theaters in Mountain View. So a lot to sort through, but its going to be a great event and just get there when you can as often as you can. Rosemary i agree. Yeah, always a good time to watch a good movie. Giving you a look here at what appears to be a scary movie. Weve got a lot of fog that has developed just inside the bay along the coastline. Visibility is still hanging on. Okay, three miles reported at half moon bay. In addition to the low clouds and the fog that we typically get this time of year, as we call it, for august, we are also going to have some moisture come our way via the south and the desert southwest. And with that , there is a slight possibility of scattered showers today in lake tahoe and a better chance for thunderstorms as we get into sunday, monday, again, that is for the lake tahoe area, perhaps yosemite, if you are going to be heading in that direction for us , we are going to just feel a little bit more muggy as the clouds are expected to move overhead. More so tomorrow and monday compared to today. Heres a look at the futurecast model. Theres a look at this evening. Notice a little bit coming from this direction. So were partly sunny to mostly cloudy at the coast for today, partly cloudy for the rest of us. Heres a look at tomorrow morning. It appears to be a near repeat, but by the afternoon, look at that batch of clouds that wants to roll in. This remains on track. That will come late in the afternoon tomorrow. And again, well likely to feel a bit more humid around here. Temperatures around the bay area right now, 59 degrees in San Francisco to about 70 degrees inland where the sun is shining. The temps are rebounding already for the afternoon today. The giants game going to be nice there at oracle park. Game time is at 605, 65 degrees. A west breeze to about 15mph. So we do have a little bit of an onshore breeze out there along the coast, just inside the bay, the afternoon high for San Francisco today, 68, 76 in oakland, our inland cities, were not going to get any relief from that onshore breeze. And you will go into the low 90s for today. Concord low 80s expected in napa valley enjoyable for you there. The extended forecast temperatures continuing to heat up for the back end of the weekend mid 90s inland low 80s around the bay. In addition to that cloud cover coming our way the heat will really be on monday into tuesday. Nearing 100 degrees once again for our inland cities 80s around the bay some beautiful beach weather though we have temperatures in the upper 60s to low 70s with only slightly cooler weather expected on wednesday. Claudia okay thanks, rosemary. Well, investigating why emergency sirens did not alert those who live in lahaina in maui. Its been six months since the oakland mayor shengtao, fired the former chief, lauren armstrong, saying she lost confidence in him for the way he handled the Police Misconduct cases. The commission is responsive for vetting candidates and submitting a final choice to the city council and mayor for approval if the final candidate is rejected, the entire process starts over. Todays first session is at 81st Avenue Branch library. That starts at 1030 this morning. And the second hearing will begin at 2 00 at the west Oakland Branch library on adeline street. Meanwhile, the oakland naacp and other Community Leaders are linking oaklands public crime crisis to the firing of chief leron armstrong. In a new open letter the leaders call armstrong an extraordinary chief who grew up in oakland, knew the city and reduce crime. They say seven months after his firing, the city has still not hired a new chief due to internal disputes at the Police Review commission. And they repeated their urgent call for the mayor to declare a state of emergency. And the statement added, quote , if the mayor wants to look at the root causes of oaklands 2023 crime crisis, we urge her to look in the mirror. Crime has mushroomed since she fired chief armstrong. We will work with anyone who wants to bring peace and safety to our city. We are glad the mayor now speaks of wanting to get involved, but words wont solve our problem. Start by declaring that oakland has a Public Safety emergency and then take action. One expert says your neighborhood needs to do if youre live in the area exposed to fire. From ktvu fox two news this is morning. On to. Hey good morning. Welcome back to mornings on two. It is 930 on what is about to be a very pretty day in the bay area. Still got a few clouds here in the marina but eventually some blue skies will prevail and if you live out in livermore, brentwood, youre saying, what are you talking about . Its already nice out here. Welcome back to ktv mornings on two. Im frank malaga. And im claudine wong. Yes, its a slow start to the sun on this saturday for some areas, but i think its going to pick up some speed and some steam literally later. Yes its a little steamy for sure, especially inland temperatures are in the 80s, yesterday. Today low 90s, mid 90s. By tomorrow. So a warming trend underway for the week. Meanwhile along the coastline, we do expect to remain with partly to mostly cloudy skies and cool conditions. A better look at the temperatures and the added humidity coming our way for the weekend as well coming up. Okay. Thank you, rosemary. Well, the official death toll in the catastrophic wildfires on the Hawaiian Island of maui climbed to 80 overnight. And that number is expected to grow in the coming days as search teams find more victims buried under collapsed buildings and inside gutted cars. New numbers released just a short time ago shows that the wildfires have damaged or destroyed more than 2200 buildings. So people who live in lahaina will get another chance today to head to their properties. Foxs jake alexis joins us now live from maui. Jake. Well, claudine, people here are beginning to pick up the pieces after what state officials called the deadliest wildfire in hawaiis history. And its going to be a long road to recovery for those who were able to evacuate in time. Rushing into the water near lahaina harbor to save people fleeing the flames. A surface swimmer deployed into the water to save five people, including two children, from the water. Those who lost everything are living in shelters, recounting their stories of survival, trying to heal together. A lot of us are posttraumatic stress, shell shock, and we kind of can bond with this mainland. Help may take a while to get to affected areas. So many who were spared are giving what they can to help those who lost everything. Weve become a shelter. Weve become a Food Distribution center and Donation Center. People have been dropping off donations. Were going to rebuild. Maui will be maui will be rebuilt. The dangers in the region still rage on as just last night. Another small fire broke out and the roads that were open yesterday going back into lahaina were closed again. But we have been told that within the last few minutes or so, cars have started moving. So theyll slowly be making their way back in today as well. Claudine yeah, such a long road ahead. Jake you know, its always the pictures. They dont necessarily even do justice to really the devastation that you see there. I know we saw that with our california wildfire here when they swept the areas for the high winds here. Can you talk about your travels there, who you kind of saw as you went in there and how difficult it is even for the media to get in and around to bring us these pictures and these stories . Yeah. So weve been kind of on the ground here for the last couple of days. Coming in was pretty shocking as well because me personally on my flight, there were a couple of people from maui heading back in who said that they had lost everything and they were warning people on the flight just how extensive the damage was. And even suggesting to some people that they turn around if they were taking a trip, turn around and not even come. Thats just how devastating its been for people here. Yeah its really remarkable. And have you been able to get around okay, or is this still an area for even the press to try to see whats going on in trouble, getting to those spots. Yeah, the biggest congestion has been moviahaina. E mentioned the backup. There was a blockade for several hours yesterday with a huge backup. Weve been told that the line is long today as well. Again we just mentioned the cars have started moving, but it could be a while before a lot of them who were trying to get back into the town of lahaina eventually make it. Yeah, our thoughts stay with them. Jake alexis, thanks so much for that report. We appreciate it. Stay safe out there. We well, the American Red Cross has asking for help as it does respond to the wildfire disaster on maui. The Organization Says it needs hundreds of volunteers to help staff at shelters and assist with response efforts. The red cross says its struggling to get enough boots on the ground in maui following one of the worst Natural Disasters in our nations history. The bulk of the need is in china and the devastation is almost total. And it is an imaginable as somebody who lived here for over 15 years, its like a moonscape. I mean, its jus like a bomb was dropped. Its apocalyptic cy provided more than 2100 shelter beds for residents and tourists evacuated from maui and a team of volunteers from here in the bay area have already arrived on the island to help prominent celebrities with ties to hawaii are also doing their part to support wildfire victims. And survivors. Among them are amazon founder jeff bezos. His fiance, lauren sanchez. A couple took to instagram to announce theyre donating 100 million for relief efforts. They posted that the money will be used to help rebuild maui in the coming years. Basso reportedly owns a compound on maui worth about 80 million. Happening today, there is going to be a special tribute to the people who lost their lives in maui during an event on the peninsula. It is the bay area aloha festival, which is about to get underway at the San Mateo Event Center. Lets go to ktvu james torres joining us now live with that story. Good morning to you, james. Claudine, good morning to you. Were about an hour away from the doors officially opening this morning. You can see the setup here behind me. This is the aloha bay area festival thats happening this morning. It didnt always be it wasnt always hosted here in San Mateo County when it first started, about 28 years ago. It first started in San Francisco, right there along the waterfront. And there was some period of time where there was some concern and some renovations that forced the guys to move everything out here to the San Mateo County events center. So all the vendors out here and what im told from some of the organizers here, many of the vendors, many of the people running the shop here, all have ties of course, and roots to hawaii, more specifically, maui and lahaina. And weve heard updates almost every day. And it just gets worse and worse on just how much damage these fires caused. Of course, the island town of lahaina, more than 80 people are pronounced dead. Thousands of buildings, homes, offices destroyed. We know volunteer groups are there on the ground right now. Strike teams from all over the country, including here in the bay area, working to get supplies, information and resources to victims and survivors. But aside from the awareness of all those disasters, organizers here say there is much more to the festival that you can enjoy here today. What do they do in the Hawaiian Islands in terms of dance, in terms of cultural activities . You can participate in, such as learning the language, maybe learning a little bit about the culture itself. How do the Pacific Islanders live . And you can participate in that if you are a tourist plan on going to hawaii. Heres what you can get initiated as to what you can expect to happen when you go there. Now, take you live back out here withinside the San Mateo Events Center here. There is one piece, one booth, i should say, that will kind of help you and talk to you about the ideas of maybe contributing and donating and maybe getting partly involved in some of these relief efforts. You see the Hawaiian Airlines tent right here. You can come here and either donate your cash, your money. You can also donate your accumulated miles if youre a frequent flier with Hawaiian Airlines. They say those miles will be used for a number of different flights, getting people from island to island, from maui, possibly to oahu, as well, and possibly getting resources back between the mainland and to the islands as well. Now, if you want to actually come out to the aloha festival, enjoy it for yourself. Admission is totally free. However if you were to park at the event center, that will cost you 18. Were live this morning from San Mateo County. Im james torres ktvu fox two news. All right, great information. Thanks so much, james. Well, many survivors of the wildfires in maui say there was no public warning as those huge flames came racing towards their homes and they say mauis highly touted warnings. Sirens were completely silent during the critical early hours of that disaster. So many people were forced to run for their lives without any help or direction from hawaiis emergency agencies. I think the problem is, is focusing all of this on particular agencies or particular operating centers that that may easily be overrun. This was clearly an evacuation problem. Most of our town are not designed to be evacuated quickly or efficiently. Emergency response experts say there were very few exit routes in that hard hit town of lahaina , and they say it was much like the situation in the california town of paradise five years ago when the camp fire destroyed that community. People are going to have to realize that this is a problem that they individually and as neighborhoods and groups need to take on. They cant just expect that some Government Official somewhere is going to handle this. Hawaiis governor is promising to investigate why those warning sirens were not activated on maui when the firestorm began. 941 your time. Lets bring it back home. Talk about the sun shine that is starting to peek through behind us on the estuary. Yes. Yes. Mount diablo enjoying sunshine most of the morning behind you. Were beginning to see some peeks of blue and sunshine. And as we get into the second part of the morning, early afternoon , those clouds will continue to pull back at the coastline, likely to remain partly to mostly cloudy for today. Experienced a little bit of drizzle out there. We do have a little bit of an easterly flow out on the surface. So a little bit of an onshore breeze. And with that, we are going to remain very comfortable along the coastline. Inside the bay are inland cities, though, expected to soar into the low 90s for our hotter spots . Im talking about you. Areas like antioch, concord, livermore, san ramon, 66. Right now in oakland, 59 in San Francisco, where we have the clouds and the fog out there this morning. Its been really hard to rebound. Weve been stuck at 59 for most of the morning, if not the entire morning thus far along the coastline, as well as San Francisco. The 70 degrees reported at stanford and then as we go inland, 70 degrees in alamo, upper 60s reported in clayton. Afternoon highs for today. Well go from very seasonal to a little above average for today, 86 expected for santa rosa. Oakland, youre going to 76. One of the hotter spots for today, 93 in livermore, 85 expected over san jose. A better look at your numbers for the afternoon. Upper 60s in San Francisco. If youre going to the giants game later today, its going to be pretty at oracle park. We will have an afternoon breeze though so bring at least a layer low 80s expected for napa. Beautiful for you there. Little toasty inland east bay 93 expected in antioch , 85 over san jose. Temperatures will continue to climb into your bay area sunday and we do have a little bit of moisture coming our way. A better look at what to expect for the rest of the weekend coming up. Sounds good. Thank you, rosemary. Trip of a lifetime on the line for some east bay Little Leaguers. See how they did in a battle of northern and Southern California. And gray wolves expanding their range in california. The new wolf pack discovered hundreds of miles south of previous wolves populate versions subways now slicing their deli meats fresh. Thats why the new titan turkey is proferred by this football pro. And proferred by this football pro who actually uses her feet. And if we profer it, we know youll prefer it too. I use my feet. Have you seen me scramble . Now, the wolves were first spotted in july in Sequoia National forest, and dna testing of wolf tracks confirmed that the pack is new to california and further south than the other wolves that have already been spotted. Gray wolves are native to california but were eradicated from the state in the 1920s. In recent years, gray wolves have begun to make their way back from other parts of the country. 947 year time, nearly 100 people gathered in san ramon to watch their Little League team compete in the western regional championship game last night. A win would have sent the Bollinger Canyon baseball boys to the Little League world series, even though the team lost 3 to 1 to a team from the la area, the community displayed heartfelt support parents and peers say the players should hold their heads high because theyre still winners in their eyes to keep going and moving and working hard every single day, putting that effort. Its been taxing so proud. Win or lose, its a win. Its absolutely a win. Its a win for these kids. Its a win for the parents. Its a win for the community. I want to do the same thing theyre doing next year. I want to be in this opportunity. Bet you do. Parents and coaches say that one of the benefits kids get in youth sports is developing lifelong friendships through the shared experience that i did a deep dive there was a team in 1991 out of san ramon that went to the Little League world series all the way to the title game. La to taiwan. So theyve done it before. So maybe next year, maybe next year. All right. Maybe sunshine, rosemary, maybe hot temperatures. Oh, its still gray in the picture. Weve got some in the estuary, right . Yes yes, yes. So were slowly seeing those clouds uphill away. We will be with mostly sunny to partly cloudy skies away from the coastline today along the coast, likely to remain partly sunny to partly cloudy. A little bit of drizzle out there. And weve been talking about this added moisture as well, coming in from the south and the desert southwest. Weve got some wraparound moisture coming from this direction. You can see how the flow there over that low that is parked over Southern California is helping to bring us those mid and high level clouds a little bit today. More expected for tomorrow. Also includes areas over the sierra where as we move into the second part of the weekend and into early next week, the risk of thunderstorms will be increasing over lake tahoe as well as yosemite. Heres a look at your futurecast. Heres a look at the evening hours for us. Sunsets about eight, ten or so, there is that cloud cover, especially over the eastern part of california for us. We have the low clouds along the coastline, maybe a few of those mid and high level clouds passing through comes sunday morning, a near repeat of yesterday or to this this morning where we have the clouds along the coastline just inside the bay. But take a look at that batch of clouds. If this comes into fruition, we are likely to be mostly cloudy for the second part of our day on sunday. And again, an increased risk for thunderstorms over the sierra. Temperatures around the bay area at this time. Half moon bay, San Francisco stuck at 59 degrees with the clouds still in place. Meanwhile, our inland cities are enjoying a little bit more sunshine and already seeing the warm up low 70s right now in brentwood for outside lands today on the west edge of San Francisco, going to remain a partly to mostly cloudy 60 degrees at noontime, 65 at 4 00 in the afternoon, just after sunset, 8 00, 58 degrees and an onshore breeze. So a little cool and breezy there for the second part of the day. For those enjoying outside lands. Meanwhile, we go to the other side of the bay area and its going to heat up livermore 84 degrees by your lunch hour. Expected to hit a low 90s for today for areas right around livermore. Pleasanton concord, walnut creek, san ramon. You know who you are. If we go to the north bay, though. Very nice , enjoyable, warm, but not too bad. Low 80s for napa and around the bay. 76. Oakland 85 redwood city. Your extended forecast here. Temperatures continuing to climb in your bay area sunday. Well this morning, things are already getting busy in benicia as tens of thousands of people are expected to head to that city. The 60th annual benicia peddlers fair is now underway. That fair has hundreds of booths featuring antiques, arts and crafts and the proceeds go towards preserving the historic. In the last hour, we spoke to fair says a lot has changed since the first peddlers fair, which was way back when John F Kennedy was in the white house. But started in 1963. It has grown from im in the courtyard of venice, of the of the Episcopalian Church now. And it started here with just about 10 or 15 different booths. Its grown into just a mammoth event that spans the entire eight blocks of first street. We have over 320 vendors that are here today. All right. Well things got underway at 8 00 this morning.
