What im hoping for is some assurances that as we start to vaccinate educators that the schools will begin to open, but also saying she has doubts that an agreement will be reached in time for students to return to class this academic year. The sad reality is based on negotiations and the way things are going. I just dont know if schools theyre gonna gonna open this this school year. Im hopeful that they will, but we dont have control over the negotiations. And this afternoon, San Franciscos School District issued a statement reading quote. We are pleased the agreement on Baseline Health and Safety Standards was unanimously approved. We are committed to re opening as many schools as possible for in Person Instruction as soon as all the necessary and agreed upon conditions are met. Reporting live Christien Kafton ktvu, fox two news. Christian thank you. There is more encouraging news about the Coronavirus Vaccine from johnson and johnson. The fda said today that the vaccine is safe and effective in a step toward approving it for emergency use. The single dose vaccine is about 66 effective for moderate to severe coronavirus and 85 effective for serious illness. Studies also found no serious side effects and dependent group of fda advisers will meet on friday to decide whether the vaccine should be authorized. The company says they have four million shots ready to go as soon as its approved, they expect to provide 20 million doses by the end of march. Joining us now is dr monica gandhi. Dr first off, do you think that the fda will approve it this friday . Yes i think they will authorize it, and they think they should because it really looks good and we need another vaccine. This is kind of an obvious question. But how big a deal would that be . You would actually be a huge deal, because if we look at the uk, they have the majority fizer like we do, but they also have another and no virus. Edna factor, which is exactly what this is. Its just a different form, and they have been rolling out so much faster. You dont have you can put in their fridge. This one is only one does we need to get our rollout faster . Want to get on top of our variance, which i dont think they this will absolutely protect against all those variants. And one thing you didnt say, but its really important. It was 100 protective against hospitalizations and deaths. 100 so anyone who went into the hospital from covid they were in the placebo are they werent in the vaccine are so as you mentioned this is a one dose vaccine. Do you think, though, that people would want to get that . More than the other vaccines that are two doses or should if youre about to get the test, should you just take whatever vaccine you can get thats available. I doubt that there will be an option. Hell just sort of get whats available just because right now the purpose is to get everyone vaccinated as quickly as possible. And dont be upset, but that this is you want this vaccine . This is a great vaccine. Want this vaccine. It is. It is 100 protective against hospitalizations and deaths. Even the people had severe disease that the ones who are at home were not that sick and importantly, it worked against all the variants were to get south africa and brazil variants with equal efficacy against a very severe disease. All of the numbers are trending down. Have we turned the corner . I did hear a doctor talking today, saying that she was concerned about another surge in march or april. But but sadly, the anchor person didnt ask her. Well why . Why would there be a surge in martian . April what should i do not this will not happen. We were not going to have another surgeon marching equal because these air real numbers is casing. Hospitalizations going down are real. Its exciting and its wonderful, and its not just because of restrictions. Its also because of immunity. It is the way that its going down. You could see this sort of sharp decline. Its not like this, like the other surges that sharpness is representing our vaccine rollout. Likely Natural Immunity that we got from that terrible third search. If we get this vaccine rollout back, were not gonna have another search. Everyone let me talk about kids going back to school. I have two kids one in High School One in college. I have no clue what to think about them going back to school and whether or not that safe what are your thoughts about kids going back to class . You know, i would have had a different answer. Two months ago, i would have said safety precautions has figured out how to do it. At this point. We have the vaccines were going to get more vaccines and teachers just started getting back saving the city of San Francisco today once they are vaccinated, it is our job as Public Health officials and Infectious Disease people to tell them how safe they are. Once theyre vaccinated. Tell them all the data and then all children should be back in School High School middle school young school. They should all be back after teachers were vaccinated. You know, i asked this all the time, but im just wondering what your thoughts are on on. What are we going to get back to normal on . Is there a new normal or will we get back to what we used to know as normal . Were gonna back get back to real, complete normal. So the best example i can give you is the uk gave a very deliberate lockdown release program. April 12th. They said, where youre going to be able to do bars, restaurants, no mass and distance in bars and restaurants. May 12th. Theyre going to be able to go back to 1000 people inside 10,000 people outside june 12 fully wide open. Why . Because theyre looking at their incredible vaccine roll out there watching the numbers and theyre estimating that its gonna happen in june, 12 by in the uk here were slower. Its gonna happen by september or october. I think its the latest and its gonna be normal. Its going to be no mass distancing. Its normal. Thats how incredibly effective these vaccines are. If no ones in the hospital from covid19 why would we have all those distancing recommendations . Dr. Gandhi appreciate you taking the time to talk with us tonight. Thank you so much. Thank you, restaurants in marin and san matteo counties are now open for Indoor Dining. The two counties have moved from the purple tear to the less restrictive red tear ktvu Elissa Harrington reports now on what this means for many businesses. Its been up and down, up and down like everybody else. Aurora douglas, the manager at heidis pies restaurant in san mateo, prepared the dining room to welcome back customers. Amy jim polish, the owner of f 45 training, sam matteo moved all her gear outside months ago, members are spaced 10 ft apart during workouts, while she said shes encouraged to see the county moving in the right direction. Shes not ready to bring her Business Inside just yet. Now gyms are allowed to open up at a temper. Okay is kind of windy out there and cooler today, even though it was warm. Theres the daytime highs on and theyre very warm for february, but theyre down in many cases, 5 to 10 degrees from where they were yesterday. We had record warmth yesterday. Today. With the winds, temperatures came down a few degrees santa rosa ther 73 instead of 81 livermore, 69 said on the upper seventies, the plan here for the next 12 hours or so will be for the wind to continue in the Higher Elevations. Weve had wind gusts. Atop of mountie apple today up to 59 miles an hour, saying halina in the north a 51 miles an hour. These winds generally lighter overall than they were yesterday. But i feel like theyre a little more wide spread. I think were seeing them from the Sacramento Valley all the way to deliver more valley so everybodys being impacted that wind advisory stays in effect. Intel 4 a. M. Tomorrow it dies off really quickly, really quickly. Souto also it yet so heres tonight. Thats the peak win. This is going to be its about midnight tonight. And look at the contract for those purples, right . The numbers to help but those purples and Higher Elevation pretty windy, not devastating, but pretty well, you know, look how quickly it backs down as we go into the Morning Hours around thursday and then by thursday afternoon, a little bit of northwest went up north, but thats it, so the winds die down. Temperatures come down a couple degrees as well. Were kind of in a pattern that is dry. Ill tell you whos not drives the pacific northwest, where they have snow and rain and winter storm concerns. Plenty for us. Springlike weather continues. Ill come back here. Well lay it all out for you give you some specific temperatures for your neighborhoods. And the five day when i see you back here. We are moving in the right direction. It will be more vaccine will be more equitable vaccine, the state admits they need to do a better job distributing the Coronavirus Vaccine. The hard hit communities coming up next. We talked to two doctors who are leading that effort and coming up on ktvu news at six. The misuse of vaccination codes how these codes used to book appointments for people in black and brown communities are getting into the wrong hands. Plus the Oldest Church in San Francisco, now at risk of permanent closure will tell you about the effort to keep the doors open expo. Tess. Pa. Rate y cases. San francisco county did not move back to the red tear, along with san matteo and marin countys. Instead San Francisco county remains in the purple tear tonight due to a third metric something known as a Health Equity score. Thats the test Positivity Rate in low income, heavily impacted communities, officials say. San francisco will have to wait at least one more week before it can move into the less restrictive red tear Vaccine Supplies are in. Greasing following a week of weather delays, according to the States Coronavirus dashboard 7. 7 million vaccines have now been administered here in california. Thats 19 of the states population of 40 million people. More than 10. 5 million doses have now been shipped to california. While the state of california tries to ramp up their vaccination totals. Governor newsome says that they need to doom or and do better to reach hard hit black and latino communities are political reporter greg lee talked to two doctors on the forefront of this effort, and greg is here now with more on what they told him, right . Yeah, frank. Good evening. Weve seen disparities when it comes to case counts in serious outcomes for minority communities, and now were seeing it related to Vaccine Distribution. The two doctors i spoke to say that the keys towards moving towards equity or excess ability and outreach. The most obvious reflection. The canary in the coal mine of inequity in our society is health as covid19 Vaccine Distribution accelerates in california and nationwide equity remains a concern, so the numbers should it African Americans and latinos are getting vaccinated at a lower rate relative to their their being in the population to california state population. Dr oliver brookss cheer the states panel that determines who gets the vaccine and when the department of Public Health recently began releasing data related to the race and ethnicity of vaccine recipients. The latest numbers show they are 32. 7 white 16 latino 13 asian. 2. 9 black and 0. 3 native american ages, the biggest factor that is driving deaths from coronavirus infection. But even in those older age populations were seeing a really big gap in whos actually getting vaccinated. Dr kirsten bivens domingo is a ucsf epidemiologist and Health Equity researcher. I brought her and dr brooks together to discuss how do we ensure shots reach the most impacted communities. Both agreed opening sights in underserved areas like Oakland Coliseum is a good step. But after Vaccine Access codes met for black and latino communities were misused, the doctor said. There is much work to do because we need to make sure that people have the information that the Digital Access is not a reason why people dont know where to get the vaccination. Things like transportation. We need to be provisions made, for example. Of ask americans work where they dont have sickly what they cant get off from work their essential workers as distribution moves into the next phase. Dr brooks is confident the race metrics will improve. Dr bevins domingo says its incumbent on leaders to address what caused those disparities to begin with. I believe that we are moving in the right direction, there will be more vaccine. Will be more equitable vaccine if were going to have a future. Ah healthy, robust, society healthy, robust, workforce healthy and just society. Were going to have to Pay Attention to these stark inequities. Both doctors expressed some hope that the disparities laid bare by the covid19 pandemic could leave to some long term changes as it comes to health, quick care and equity. Important live greg lee ktvu fox studios, frank greg. One thing ive noticed with, i think 504 people have now died because of the coronavirus and Life Expectancy has gone down, and it has particularly going down. I believe almost three years. For black americans. Yeah, and lets kind of put that in perspective. This is just the first half of 2020 right. So before the big winter surge that we saw here in california, average Life Expectancy across the board dropped a full year but for black americans, 2. 7 years, these doctors and i spoke about that about how obviously that is a major red flag. Not only about how the pandemic has disproportionately impacted communities of color, but how those. Equities were there well before this pandemic came around, regular life force tonight, craig. Thank you on a reminder here, you could seymour of gregs interview this weekend when ktvu brings back voices for change. Its a monthly show discussing in depth issues of race, equity and social justice. Itll air this sunday 9 30 in the morning here on ktvu. This is gonna go down. The johnson and johnson covid19 vaccine if the fda grants emergency youth authorization, the fda said today that the Coronavirus Vaccine developed by johnson and johnson is safe and has met the requirements for an emergency youth authorization, but it still needs final approval. The agency stated that overall, the vaccine is 66 effective at preventing moderate to severe. Coronavirus but up to 100 effective at preventing death and hospitalization, if anyway is issued. We anticipate allocating 3 to 4 million doses of johnson and johnson vaccine next week. Johnson and johnson has announced it aims to deliver a total of 20 million doses by the end of march and independent group of fda advisers will hold an all day meeting friday to make a recommendation about whether to approve the vaccine. There are hundreds of potential vaccines making their way through research and testing. Interviews tom vacar here now, with a look at the many other vaccine candidates and where they stand in the process, tom, lets say i learned a lot, you know, thanks to both serious competition and unprecedented scientific cooperation with world will soon have a veritable explosion of covid vaccines. As vaccine pioneer dr margaret lu says covid recognizes no borders. Every disease now is just a plane right away. Were talking about wanting to vaccinate. Probably two thirds of the worlds population. Dr jon swartz berg is an Infectious Disease expert and vaccine ologists who says we will need everything this army of vaccine creators can make because we dont yet know if or when well have to be re vaccinated as we are now with the flu. Were not gonna handle this pandemic by just getting america vaccine. Were gonna handle this pandemic by getting the world vaccinated, according to the World Health Organization in New York Times researchers as of last thursday at least seven different covid vaccines have been rolled out in various countries. But there are more than 200 vaccine candidates in development. 71 are in the three phases of Clinical Trials. 20 of those in final testing. Another 78 pre clinical vaccines are under active investigation in animals. This is definitely unprecedented. Its very impressive. Not just the number of Vaccine Center under development, but the way that Even Companies that normally would be competitors are coming together and working together. This is gonna go down is remarkable accomplishments of our species. If viruses mutate, we can tweak the vaccines and mass produce them by manufacturing vaccines that showed real promise. As the fizer and madonna vaccines did. Those can be actually designed and even started to be made it really very, very quickly, and that, of course, is saved many many lives because the vaccines are available sooner. But dont throw away those masks or stop social distancing because we still dont know if vaccinated people can still be spreaders. Im fully vaccinated now. If i get exposed to the virus, can it multiplied within my nose and throat and airways and i wont know it because i will get sick. But could i spread it . Somebody else masks and distance remain critical. And so what we have to realize is that theres a lot going on. Ah lot of things. Theyre going to come online very, very soon. And then a few months, this idea of a shortness of ah, shortly a shortage of vaccines is going to be a thing of the past. Tom vacar ktvu fox. Yeah all the time. What you say its so true, i think of that is that we cannot let our guard down. Its sad that wearing a mask has become a political statement. It seems like. Its such an easy thing to do. Just wear your mask and keep your social distance. It helps. Absolutely and once we figure out that we really are not spreaders once were fully vaccinated, then a lot of things really will return to what we know as normal. But that has to be understood in until then. Those mess that distancing and that sanitation is critical. Yeah, i couldnt agree with you more alright. Tom vacar live tonight, tom.
