half-dozen times in the past few months. >> i don't know why people would target small business, because we are just trying to get by. we are just trying to make it. >> it is unfortunate, you know? it is new year's day, i was hoping for a good year. 2020 was rough, all of the businesses down here, we have had a hard time. >> reporter: police say the motorcycle rider appeared to be wearing gloves, katsuyama reporting for us tonight. thanks. now to san mateo county, where residents are sounding the alarm about traffic speeding through the neighborhood. this morning, a bicyclist there was struck by a car, and critically injured. the crash happened northeast of downtown, at tilton avenue and north humboldt street. emma goss is here, with an update on the man's condition, how police and neighbors are responding.? >> reporter: hey, andre, so, san mateo police tell me the man is a 60-year-old resident, who was bicycling tran06: 30 in the morning, in the intersection, when a speeding car ran a stop sign and hit him, unfortunately he was taken to the hospital and is expected to recover. neighbors tell me the area is a hotspot for car crashes and the problem is getting worse. >> every one of my neighbors has had a close call. i have had-- i have seen neighbors that i don't know particularly well, standing out front, yelling at cars to slow down. i have seen accidents right in front of my house, multiple times in the 12 years that i have lived here. caused by speeding. >> reporter: in san mateo, along the busy thoroughfare of north humboldt street, residents, like kevin simpson, don't feel safe walking or bicycling in the area. >> i will not write in on humboldt street, because you are just a sitting duck. many people do, i don't. >> reporter: in fact, during our interview this evening, a pedestrian crossing the same intersection as the bicyclist who was hit earlier, was nearly hit by a speeding car. >> what needs to happen is a lot of people need to get tickets and they need to have to pay those tickets, and we need to see the enforcement out here. >> reporter: san mateo police agree, and on thursday, rolling out a public online tool that maps where in the city their traffic enforcement currently is, and where collisions are taking place. >> that is how we develop our strategy. you know, we look at where all of the the collisions are happening, and that is where we end up focusing a lot of our efforts, because, you know, we want to not only educate the community, but sometimes we have to do some enforcement too, and that comes with giving people tickets. >> police also encouraged residents, like simpson, to report accidents they see, to the traffic bureau. >> reporter: our residents are our eyes and ears, we can't have a cop on every corner, we would absolutely love that, but we can't. so, we rely on our residents to call us and send us emails, you know? through whatever medium they choose. >> there are officers already patrolling humbled, where today's hit-and-run place. >> they are working their hardest to bring that stuff under control, but you know? speeding is something that is going to cost lives, and it very nearly did today, and we have just got to getting control of it. >> reporter: this evening, the driver suspected in the hit and run turned himself in to police and based on his statement, he was not arrested. now the investigation is being forwarded to the district attorney's office, to figure out whether or not he will be prosecuted. andre? >> we will see what happens there, emma. thank you so much. we are learning more about the suspect the driver who hit and killed two pedestrians in san francisco. police say 45-year-old, troy mcallister, stole a car when he hit two women on second street. police say he was a parolee who just burglarized a restaurant. they also pulled a loaded gun on him with an extended magazine. witnesses say he tried to run away from the crash, when a group of by standards help chase him down. >> as soon as he got out, he went that way. and there must have been easily 30 people that were chasing him. and they got him. because they were relentless. >> reporter: the suspect now faces charges of manslaughter, leaving the scene of an accident, and driving under the influence. san francisco, police chief, bill scott, issuing a statement saying in part, quote, our hearts go out to the families and last evening's fatal hit- and-run accident on second street. this senseless tragedy shouldn't have happened. now to the coronavirus pandemic in a sobering start to 2021. the number of confirmed cases today, nationwide, surpassed 20 million. that is nearly twice as many as the number two country, india, and nearly one quarter of the 83 million cases, globally. the death toll in the u.s. is nearly 347,000, california also had a record today, with 585 covid deaths in a single day. there were 47,000 new cases reported, statewide, today alone. as california continues to crack and is a string of those cases, the criticism and frustration continues over the rollout of the coronavirus vaccines. the u.s. is falling far short of the 20 million doses the trump doses will be reserved for them, with the first to be made available, by march 1st. now the fda, and a panel of outdoor advisors expressed concerns about the plan, saying they wanted volunteers to virus. >> reporter: is covid cases continue to surge in california, icu phillips, and many other hospitals, respiratory therapists are being pushed to the limit. >> we are getting beat up, we are getting told by a lot of places, we are really in demand in terms of oxygen delivery and whatnot, throughout the hospital. >> reporter: lances and rt at zach verdea general hospital. to but it's and the, respiratory therapists work with doctors and nurses to evaluate and deliver options to help patients breathe. >> anything as simple as an oxygen device that sits in your nose, it delivers a little bit of oxygen, or a is extreme is everything to for ventilator. >> reporter: we have heard about the ventilator supply, but it is up to and rt to ensure it is working properly. like many front-line workers, lance is caring for a lot of covid patients, some who require much more attention. >> really, these covid patients get so sick that they need the most minute and minuscule attention, in terms of ventilator-- what we call sigourney, because can you imagine having a breathing tube, and breathe against the ventilator, and against it. no one is very comfortable with that. >> reporter: lines spoke with us at the hospital, just after working in an intensive care baby delivery. working with covid patient in their final moments. >> you know, we knew this patient wasn't going to survive, and yeah, we took a moment of silence, and that was it, right there. we kind of have just got to-- got to-- you know, take our gear up, make sure we are sterile, and make sure we are
