The lunch rush has slowed a bit during the pandemic. Owner david getting a boost from a donor. Going day by day, wondering how you are going to make rent, somebody comes with a check for 1,500 out of just the kindness of his heart, thats something very amazing. It is one of 16 downtown restaurants gifted money from a program called meals to martinez. I think a lot of people when they hear about this, it doesnt make sense to them, they feel it is too good to be true. The local attorney donated 30,000 from the restaurants to the law offices with the help of the nonprofit main street martinez, the meal program is giving out 600 meal vouchers to people in need redeemable at one of the 16 restaurants. We knew people were struggling to put food on the table, lets help them out. We know restaurants are struggling to get customers, we can put these two entities together and help both of them out. The program is already sent out nearly 250 vouchers, anyone can nominate a residence furloughed lost a job or deemed a non essential worker. I think this Program Comes at a really necessary time, couldnt be a better time to help those that are now closing again. Its been incredibly overwhelming, this is amazing community. Leslie styles says closing was never an option, they shifted to take out and outdoor dining. The donation, another way to survive. I used it for half of my rent, it was an absolute necessary when i got it and down the road when people come in with their 30 Gift Certificate for food, they are going to get the best meal they ever had. The restaurants hope the program increases foot traffic downtown to keep spreading the good. That is the most awesome thing that that guy could ever do. He was born and raised, his law firm is downtown, says every year he donates 10 of profits to charity. Ktvu, fox 2 news. In the south bay a group of musicians using the power of music to make people happy. Every thursday, the dream achievers hold a celebration in freemont, a Group Includes lawrence wang, and they are autistic, they perform internationally, for the past month theyve been performing weekly concerts on facebook from the friends and children with special needs center in freemont. Whenever i strum my guitar, it feels like im a rock star. The joy the band gives to people and if we cant be there in person, then thats the next best thing. Kathy is the mother of the guitarrest and singer, says the shows are the highlight of her week, she and another hoping to spread a little joy, show musics power of connection. Well, it all started as an idea among neighbors in the town, quickly grew in a nightly performance on the water. We spoke with a musician who began the comforting tradition at the height of the bay area coronavirus lock down back in march. In the town, every night at 6 p. M. , you will hear the sound of a violin reaching out over the bay. The woman playing is anna bell marie. She is the director and the founder of the childrens choir. Marie says the idea was just to bring music to the neighborhood but the idea quickly picked up steam. If me going out on my deck and playing my violin and all the neighbors come out at 6 00 and the way this started was, we had an interest about, lets do some music, lets do something beside this social distancing, were going to do it, lets do some music, they asked me because im the musician on group, so i brought up my amp, started this music and then one of them yells from the house, play your violin i ran back in, got my violin, and started playing and then i posted it. Facebook went crazy on it. Marie says music is also helping members of her childrens choir who just recently did a virtual choir performance. The group has performed for president s, at the olympics, recently traveled to for the crown prince, it was difficult for the children but the virtual choir helped lift their spirit. Get music, ties people together, how its helped them is to be able to have some, something that they can visually connect with each other. Not all of them have each others phone numbers and all that kind of thing, to have that visual connection is a way, to do it through music and something inspirational, i make sure we pick an inspirational song and it is something that they just took off, i know that our views were starting to get crazy, so now i want to do this every week because these kids are now starting to ask me so instead of being depressed they are starting to ask me. Marie says she is planning on doing more virtual choir performances, they are working on the next one now. At 6 p. M. , every night, you will find her on her porch. Playing for whoever wants to listen. Great story. A group of young women in berkeley are credited with making protective equipment for frontline medical workers, ktvus rob roth spoke to some teenagers about why they decided to step up and help. Here at girls garage in berkeley, these young women joined the battle against the pandemic. I am not on the frontlines, i can help those in need. Simone is a junior at the high school, but part of a team of female teens making face shields to help keep safe doctors nurses and other firstresponders who may come in contact with covid19 patients. Sometimes it feels like you dont have a lot of power, really scary and uncertain situations, that there are small things you can do that can have an impact. It turns out about 100 face shields a day, a thousand since they started making them. The desperatelyneeded shields have been going to hospitals and care centers here in the bay area, also to those in new york and new jersey, shields start with a baseball cap. The plastic shield gets bent and then the hat, the rim of the hat gets marked and clipped then they are attached just using pliers. The Team Practices social distancing. Girls garage is a place where girls age 9 to 18 can learn how to work with their hands and use power tools, skills that are often associated more with boys and men, the nonprofit has made furniture for womens shelter and sandboxes for preschools, now enlisted in the battle offal a lifetime. Im super happy that the group of girls that are part of girls garage continue to build and do so in response to something so urgent. She is a senior at berkeley high, she says she has ep tests coming up yet it is also important for her to be here, too. So many people are trying to do all they can to kind of fight the coronavirus, being able to get a hands on activity to help these people is really gratifying. The girls from girls garage say years from now when they look back on all this, they will see this as a time when they learned about themselves, the world, and how to make a pretty good face shield. Rob roth, ktvu, fox 2 news. I would keep driving, but we think it is a better idea for me to gracefly quit. A woman who decided to step away from the steering wheel, after 80 years behind the wheel, she is a hoot. A return to miami, our sports director has a look how his trip to super bowl liv differs from his trip in 1989 as 49ers attempted to win the national nfl title coming up, stay with us. Welcome back, cooper is a very independent 98yearold woman, after 80 years she decided to stop driving for good. We have this feel good story of 2020 as she tagged along from one of flows final drives. The words 98yearold driver might give you pause, flow gives you that. My hearing is disappearing, i mean my eyes, excuse me, my hearing is too, everything is disappearing. It is why she knows it is time to hang up those keys but shell also tell you she is doing it with what she is pretty sure is a perfect driving record. But youd never gotten a ticket. No, i dont remember ever getting a ticket. Ever get in an accident . No, i dont think so. I mean its been a great run, shes been driving since she turned 18 back in 1940, do the math thats 80 years of driving. My dad taught me to drive on a whip it, it was a little car, remind me of the size they were from the whipit to the model a, she has driven fords but is now about the acura. I love it. I hate to part with it. Lets be honest, you cant talk to flow without wanting to know more, whats her secret . She is awesome, she still has it at her age. Here are a couple longevity tips. Having a good attitude, having hobbies, things you like to do, she says her life has been very interesting, full of army travel, camping and family, before her husband of 60 years passed away she was an avid painter. All paintings you see in here are mine. The house she has lived in for 40 years brings her joy. This is my pond that we built and the birds love it. She takes a long time and snuggle with her cat. He is 18 years old, he and i have aged together. Says there are benefits tonightly martinis. Sapphire gen, i kept using less and less, one day i said to myself, you dont like it anyway, why put it in, now i drink straight gin with an ice cube or two. Not driving anymore makes her a little sad, she has adapted over the years. I would keep driving, but we think its a better idea for me to gracefully quit. Did you need some convincing . Of course i did, im very independent. Her family says covid just convinced them it was time. She cant go into the stores at 98 and so, you know, how long is it going to be before she is really going to drive again. She has plenty of family looking out for her, but goodbyes are hard and it was easy to get a little listful as we watched her take a last spin. I was thinking, gee this feels good. But it is the way it is, it is the way life is, whatever stage you are at, you learn to live with. The car gets a new home with her grandson, and as far as whats next, flow is not sure, who knows, she may be inspired when she has her next martini. When i know im sitting, thats when i have my martini. In vanica. One family is thrilled with the la dodgers world title this year, the teams starting pitcher in the final game was tony gonzola grow up in vacaville surrounded by giants fans. When he was drafted, it was congratulations im sorry. He dreamed of becoming a Major League Pitcher he worked his way from Little League to vacaville high school. His father is an oakland firefighter, he at the rest of the family when he won the title winning game, says it wasnt so often to be a dodger fan just for one night. Stick with sports, super bowl liv didnt turn out the way 9er fans had hoped but didnt stop us from sending a team to miami for the festivities, ktvu sports director was among the group and he tells us he was a little nostalgic when he was a younger man also in miami covering an early 9ers super bowl championship. As to whether or not jerry rice is really hurt or not, well have to wait until sunday to find out. In the meantime, players starting to get serious, hitting the playbooks and the practice field, for us announcers, it is time to bone up on our statistics from miami, im mark bryant for the 10 clock news. Is that good . They ought to buy that, huh . Hey. But you best believe things are much different these days covering a super bowl than they were back in 1989, but no one can change the result of super bowl xxiii, one of the greatest come backs ever in super bowl history, culminating on a joe montana to john taylor pass the final moments bringing the 49ers the ultimate victory, perhaps the biggest change between then and now, player access. For instance, can you even imagine, say, George Kittle calling his own personal chiropractor to come out to the area to cure his ills like jerry rice did back then . You cant get anywhere near these multimillion dollars properties, you have to hit what they call radio row where mostly former players hit the radio waves to talk about new products and of course the good ol days, like linebacker Bill Romanowski who was on that Championship Team he has fond memories all right, he wanted to keep it in the here and now. This is, you know, a defining moment for Kyle Shanahan that potentially cements him in nfl history you know, when you win super bowls, thats what it does, he knows that from his dad. Looking back on super bowl xxiii it is almost hard to believe the lack of security, imagine walking up to the guy who was going to sing the National Anthem for the game, saying, hey, can i interview your wife, like i did with billy joel and Christie Brinkley . I know joe montana has been great. Things have changed in 30 years, for one working all day in the sun, all i care about is getting a good nap, i am wearing 50 sunscreen, as far as the heat goes, all i can say, at least it is good for my arthritis, we hit that point of the week where the players are sequestered away for the most part away from the media, ive got a little time to study my rosters and such, so thats pretty much the scene here from south beach miami florida, ktvu fox 2. They ought to buy that, right . Lets go play some bingo. Shraids . Well done, mark, were all getting a little older. Coming up next, normally cheers on the San Jose Earthquakes gathered to celebrate workers amid the coronavirus pandemic. Kamala harris making history as the first woman and person of color elected Vice President. Bay area routes and the Important Message this win is sending young girls every where, stay right here. Our field good stories of 2020 would not be complete without an ode to workers, a fan group dedicated to cheer on the San Jose Earthquakes, took on the sites and sounds to Santa Clara County medical center, they wanted hospital workers to be treated like superstars. Cheering, it is what this group of super fans is known for. Normally, they turn their attention to soccer and beloved earthquakes, theyve taken their voices and support to valley medical center. We support our players, right now the players are playing so we support those guys, these are the superstars right now, should be treated as such in the future. The ultra started with a fundraiser collecting 4,000 in a matter of hours, when the earthquakes found out, they decided to match it. They do a great job supporting us, us giving back to health care workers, the doctors and nurses, everybody, i think it is just, all they are doing a great job, i think it just shows how loyal they are to san jose. That was used to bring in food trucks to bring in frontline workers during the hospitals largest shift change. That the ultras outside doing what they do best. For an afternoon all the folks that work inside the hospital, that are doing incredibly difficult work are going to experience being athletes walking out on a field and being cheered on by fans. For this nurse it was a bright spot during some otherwise difficult days. I feel so blessed because there are all these people, makes me a little bit emotional for us, our hospital. San jose ultra is the earthquakes most prominent fan group that have been around cheering on their team since 2003. Ann ruben ktvu fox 2 news. What a year its been, what an election many of you may know Vice President elect Kamala Harris has deep roots right here in the bay area. Kamala harris is featured in a mural at her Elementary School Thousand Oaks in west berkeley, a day after her historic victory to become the first woman and first person of color, Vice President families were out taking pictures. We would be so proud that someone like her is just representative of the bay area in berkeley it was incredible, just started crying, just was so very emotional, so very personal to me, because of knowing her, carol porter grew up with harris and a breakout memorable moment, harris spoke of being bused to thousand oakes Elementary School every day in the 1960s. And you know, there was a little girl in california who was part of the second class to integrate her public schools, she was bussed to school every day. That little girl was me. Porter sat next to harris on the bus singing jackson 5 songs. When she said what she said it was so powerful, it was so true, it was so powerful, i was like oh my gosh, thats us. Porter recalls harris the daughter of immigrants born to an indian mother and jamaican father being studious coming from modest means, a characteristic she saw in harris back then and now, a person with intent who listened, harris, like her mother wanted to serve. Shes worked so hard, she has walked in so many rooms they not wanted her at the table or closed the door, because she is a woman of color. She is setting it she is starting it right now. For people to follow. Harris win will be part of marvin reeds lesson plan, he is the only black teacher at thousand oakes elementary, he plans to have his students watch harris victory speech. While i may be the first woman in this office, i will not be the last. I did think this would happen, but just didnt know when it would happen. A pivotal moment, especially for young girls of color giving them hope that they could be anything in america they want to be. I feel like america is going to have a great champion for them, for me really amazing, i know her mother is dancing, dancing in heaven, i know she is. Ktvu fox 2 news.
