Many stores said that the usual rush was replaced by a week of people trickling in. Many people say that tomorrow, the meal will be served up within extra helping of gratitude. The thanksgiving eve rush took on a different tone this year for smoke berkeley. Had to turn away more than 100 orders for thanksgiving dinner. People found that their travel plans changed right at the last minute. They were trying to find someplace to find dinner. Reporter chef tina found of the barbecue restaurant now run by her son and husband. My official title is grizzly bear wrangler. I handle all of the admin and marketing. Reporter they are thankful to get the smokers going after smoke and fire a few doors down at a big construction site shut them down on saturday. We got the kitchen this morning. We had not been in since saturday night. We had 40 turkeys to do today and 20 other orders at the same time. Reporter they did manage with the help of friends and family. Im thankful that i have the most wonderful family. Reporter at the rainbow co op, shoppers loaded up cards wearing masks. The store is trying to keep shoppers safe with afterhours reservations to shop. Employees try to encourage customers through the crisis. I have been reflecting on what it means to be an essential worker and how important that is. Reporter at market whole foods, the typical thanksgiving rush was replaced by online orders for comfort food, and a lot more people saying thank you. We are hearing a lot of gratitude amongst the team and from customers. That is one benefit of 2020. [ laughter ] reporter repeatedly tonight, we heard people thinking the essential workers that are helping by being out there to help people get their thanksgiving meals together. One shopper says he hopes that next year the there could be more gratitude after the vaccines come through, and maybe people will get a chance to spend the holiday together. Those essential workers are helping all of us this season. Thank you. Sonoma county is in the most restrictive, purple tear. It is making some strides. According to the county health officer, they held a briefing. Test positivity declined 3. 6 . The surges in Residential Care homes and Skilled Nursing facilities are down compared to the summer months. Health officials credit a number of programs that they put in place. This does include doubling the testing opportunities. We are offering Financial Assistance for essential workers, so they can stay home when they test positive. We provide hotel rooms to allow for isolation to covid19 positive people that do not put roommates or Family Members at risk. As a result, the rate of daily cases per 100,000 people has dropped significantly. It is now at 8. 7 cases, down from 15 one week ago. As we go into the holiday weekend, coronavirus cases are continuing to rise in california. State Health Officials reported 18,000 cases over 24 hours. That is a new high. Total cases are over 1. 1 million. Sadly, 106 more people have died. The death toll in california is now 18,875. Hospitalizations have also risen to the highest point since august. A main focus in Santa Clara Community is latching communities. They make up 50 of all of the cases, accounting for only a quarter of the population. Addison smith is here. They say many families tend to organize and gather with people outside of their households. For one county spokesman, the numbers are personal. It is frustrating to see that my community is not following the protocols. Reporter ricardo romero, the spokesman for the Public Health department is speaking on the alarming numbers of covid19 cases in the Latin Community. The majority are in East San Jose and Santa Clara County. It turns out four members of his own family and himself, have tested positive for the virus. His 7yearold aunt passed away two weeks ago. She was the person that taught me how to cook. She was so supportive to every Family Member. Reporter with Underlying Health issues, she contracted it from a Family Member that was asymptomatic, and got infected at a construction worksite. Three of his uncles also died from the virus. It is painful, the fact that i will never see them again. Reporter Community Leaders say it is hitting the Latin Community the hardest. The number of cases in our community for covid19 that are latino is 58 . We believe that almost 60 of them are coming from community transmission. Reporter the reasons may be socioeconomic. Many latinos have essential jobs and transportation. If they test positive, some cannot afford not to work. There is getting tested, afraid of the immigration status. Many families live in multigenerational households as well. People are living in overcrowded conditions. They dont have adequate access to healthcare. I lost four Family Members. All sides are open. That will promote ventilation. Reporter on other days at thanksgiving dinner could be served communally and people could enjoy the meal, elbow to elbow and linger inside. In bed, a hot dinner will be packed in a container for them to take with them, or take a seat outside with restrictions. Reporter each table will be utilized by a household. If one person makes of the household, or six people make it up, they will be at one table. Reporter each table will be sanitized between uses. Everything is different. Reporter at the salvation army, the pandemic is not being kind to bellringing. We lost half of our sites because there were stores that could not take the risk of covid19. Reporter surviving kennels are doing well. Virtual giving is up. Salvation army helped with a turkey giveaway this week. On friday, they will give out christmas toys and skip food. This year we are giving out gift cards. Last year we were able to box food for all 300 families. Reporter supermarket cards are preferable, because marshaling crowds of volunteers is not safe. We are getting volunteers from the whole community to come out. But this year, it is just too risky to get strangers together in one place. We are serving fewer families. I do think that the need is greater. We will be evaluating things throughout the holiday season. Reporter they have 500 volunteers on hand, in the past have slashed the rings 250 and given them special training in ppe. There is no question that we would serve things giving. It was a matter of how . Reporter much of the giving this holiday is touchless, curbside, grab and go, best practices, but not as personal. That is why they do persist in bringing people together under one roof, even if it has no walls. Glide is about community and to provide a place where people can feel some community connection, particularly now that we are so isolated from each other. It will be great. It is going to be sunny. Even in Technology Rich in Santa Clara County, not everyone can afford to put the meal on the table. That is where city teams come in. The Nonprofit Organization distributed food, including thanksgiving meals to low income families in the south bay. Distribution has always been important to us. We find that one in four People Living in Santa Clara County are food insecure. Now that covid19 has happened, the numbers have gone up. The need has gone up with it. Peterson says since the pandemic began, they have been distributing about twice as much food to those in need each month. The Food Distribution is possible because of Second Harvest of silicon valley. The city team is a faithbased nonprofit that helps Homeless People, those battling addiction, and people in need. In San Francisco, 200 tricycles that were going to be given to children have been stolen. Organizers with the San Francisco Firefighters Toy Program learned about the theft yesterday. A Container Holding the tricycles was broken into on gerald avenue. Some of the larger bikes were left behind. 200 tricycles for the smallest children were stolen. Organizers have one question, why . Why did you do it . You have disappointed a lot of children that come from low income families. The majority have two working parents, and are not making high wages. What was your reasoning . I am disappointed in you, whoever you may be. Organizers plan to give away the toys on monday. People can still donate to the San Francisco Firefighters Toy Program online, or drop off toys at any fire station. It was 5 to 10 degrees cooler than yesterday. Yesterday we had numbers in the low 70s. Today, we are in the low and mid 60s. We had a week weather system moved through to the north. That is where the wind came from. People that knew him say he made a big impact on the community. Reporter there is memorial honoring the sports coach here on fillmore street. His family says the needed san Franciscan Group in the neighborhood and gave back. He was a heartbeat. Reporter family and friends gathered at a memorial for Lamar Williams. They describe him as a Community Leader that grew up on the streets. He had that smile, you know what im saying . I will never see that again. That hurts. Reporter 238yearold is remembered for his work with young people in the community. Last wednesday night, shortly before 9 00, Lamar Williams and damaree hampton were shot at his home at the hunters neighborhood. The motive is unknown and there are no arrests. He was a wonderful person. He was one of the best that you could meet. He was giving and kind. He was loving. Reporter San Francisco Unified School District said williams worked at Mission High School as a security aid is 2012. One parent shared a photo of him coaching track and field. This is video that williams posted on social media of himself at a track meet. He played football at George Washington high school. Friends described him as a star running back. They said he used his athletic skills to teach life lessons as a youth mentor. He was a father to the whole community. He took care of everybodys kids. He taught them how to do things and how to survive. Reporter he leaves behind a wife that is a San Francisco firefighter, and three children, and a community that considered him to be family. I live my life complete and better, because of him. I learned how to be a better person because of him. He would put you on the right path. That is what he did for this whole community, no matter who we was, or what age you were, or anything. Reporter Family Members say that he coached sports at several high schools. They say they cannot fathom why anyone would kill him. He had such a beautiful smile. Leaving behind three kids, as you say, at this point, the police dont have a motive. Reporter they are not saying a lot about what happened. He and another man were killed in his home. At this point, they are not saying much beyond that. That is just so awful. There are five weeks left of this year. San francisco has already exceeded the number of killings in all of last year. 45 people have been killed in the city so far this year, compared to 41 in all of last year. One supervisor says that one third of those killings happened in his district. That does include bayview and the southeast portion of the city. Now he is calling for a new Community Safety plan, including a violence prevention oversight committee, increased job opportunities, and more strategic use of police in hotspots. We have had to bury children. We have had to bury mentors. We have had to bury Family Members. It is all at the hands of senseless, and heartless violence. San Francisco Police say the increase in homicides appears to be part of a National Trend that is likely driven by the coronavirus. We should also point out that 2019s homicide rate, with 41 People Killed in the city was the lowest number in 56 years. San jose police say a homeless man accused of fatally stabbing two people at a church has a criminal history, and should not have been out of custody. Our crime reporter, henry lee, says the suspect was the warded three times. Reporter a house of worship in san jose transformed into a horrific crime scene what the mayor said was a preventable tragedy. Multiple system failures led to this moment. Reporter from it Fernando Lopez used a knife to stab five people at grace baptist church, serving as a homeless shelter. The man was going crazy. There was blood everywhere. Reporter two Homeless People were killed. Two other transients in a Church Volunteer were wounded. 12 minutes after the 911 calls, an officer spotted the suspect estate and worked at the shelter. Courage is not something we can mandate in our officers. It is omnipresent when the Community Needs it most. Reporter a motive is not known. The police chief said that lopez may have been under the influence of drugs. The random nature might be related to drug use. We cannot confirm that at this point. Reporter they know that lopez was deported three times and has a history of Domestic Violence arrest. They say he should not have been on the streets. The mayor said the homeless, as a whole should not be penalized over the actions of one man. Nothing about this attack should cause anyone to generalize our cast dispersions over our unhoused neighbors. Reporter he said he would take responsibility in this case. One failure that i will own, and that is the fact that the suspect, and four of the victims were unhoused. Nguyen pham is recovering at the hospital. We interviewed the suspect earlier this month at the church. It is warm and cozy. They provide everything like showers and hygiene. They provide a warm bed and a warm blanket. It is a blessing to have this spot. Reporter he failed to appear in court, did not abide by the terms of his probation. I. C. E. Requested a hold, but the county did not notify him when he was released. Henry lee, ktvu fox2 news. A correctional officer at California State Prison shot and killed an inmate today. Officials say it happened just before 9 00 this morning when three inmates, marta pacheco, gustavo reyes, and angel torres, tacked another inmate, paul solis. Officers try to break up the attack with chemical agents and then fired here rifles. Paul solis suffered six stab wounds and has been taken to the hospital. More coronavirus restrictions hit Los Angeles County tonight. The impact it is having on restaurants . Why a Stricter Health order could be on the way . We have some wind showing up in the hills. The fda setting up a docket for public comment. People can comment starting friday. The white house is considering lifting restrictions on travel to europe. President trump imposed the ban back in march. Their reporting he has not yet made a final decision. Many people in his Administration Support resuming travel to europe to help the struggling airlines. The cdc has expressed reservations about lifting restrictions. The agency is not expected to block the move, should it happen. Europe is starting to see progress in the fight against the coronavirus. The World Health Organization is now saying that the rate of new infections has dropped 6 in the past week, suggesting the lockdowns are starting to slow the spread. Germany is bracing for an extension of their partial shutdown into december. England will lift the four week lockdown next week and return to a threetiered system of restrictions. Danville girls choir entertained viewers with christmas carols. City officials urged people to shop locally during the holiday. She brought her custom grill to smoke chicken. They allow me to cook the meat and smoke it at the same time. Reporter they started cooking at midnight, preparing mac cheese, greens, yams, and packaged dessert in little brown backs. Other restaurants have struggled during the pandemic, these owners are doing okay. They wanted to get back. The Community Needs to eat. They need to be nourished, especially in west oakland. So many Community Members are in a forgotten part of the city. I could not live with myself tomorrow, sitting at a table full of hot, fresh food, knowing that somebody was dealing with Food Insecurity and did not have the family other friends, or necessities to cook their own meal. Now i get hot food and a pair of socks. Reporter was so many people isolated, the chefs say they will be like family for a day for anyone who needs a warm meal. It does not look good as we are sitting here on the eve of thanksgiving. The temperatures from today were cooler than yesterday. We talked about that. Temperatures tomorrow will warm up. They will come up into the mid 60s and upper 60s. I do not think we will see any 70s. We might get a stray, but most temperatures are at 68 and 69. The overnight lows are in the mid 30s. You can see this in santa rosa napa. We are in the 40s for much of the bay area. It is not a bad overnight low. We will not see a hard freeze. We are seeing significant wind. I did mention the wind earlier. The wind of the upper elevations at mount diablo, we are seeing the wind gusting at 36. I do suspect we will get some gusts upward of 45 or 50 miles per hour. It is in easterly wind. If you hear the wind, that is what it will be. It will be breezy tomorrow, especially at upper elevations. Out of the pacific, we have big surf. We have clear skies overhead. We have a cool night. They are making us going skiing at tahoe. They are making a ton of snow. That would give you an indication of the overnight lows are, they are in the 20s in truckee. For us, it is 39 in napa and 47 in concord. The temperatures are running behind where they were last night. We dont have the clouds. It is 12 degrees cooler in fairfield compared to last night. It is five degrees cooler in concord. The wind will keep us off the bottom, off of the freezing range. We will be chilly tonight. If you step outside in the Early Morning with the breeze, it will feel cold. Thanksgiving day is mostly sunny. It is breezy. High temperatures like these. They will be warmer compared to today, but not as warm as today. We have unusual weather for the sum of the year. It is dry. You will see the five day forecast is dry. He was controversial to say the least. Diego maradona , at his home country of argentina, suffered a massive heart attack today. This was two weeks after undergoing brain surgery. He was absolutely idolized in his homeland. He was probably best known for his hand of god goal. They beat england in the 1986 world cup semi final. Argentina eventually won. He was troubled throughout his adult life with Substance Abuse and various off field controversies. He always was held in the highest regard by soccer fans in his home country of argentina. Diego maradona was only 6 years old, suffering a heart attack. It was just outside of buenos aires, in his hometown.
