Reporter a sign on the door of the montclair Fitness Center in oakland explained to customers they are closed to comply with county health orders. The owner says she has been lucky enough to keep her business afloat with online and outdoor classes. We know a lot of businesses are suffering because they dont have an outdoor option and honestly, i dont know that if this continues if we will be able to keep up what we are doing. Reporter at restaurants like the crcpe pan on piedmont avenue, it is back to serving tables outside only, no more Indoor Dining allowed. Movie theaters, houses of worship, and museums can only operate outdoors in Alameda County. I would like if we could open up and participate in real life again but i think that it is really important right now that we all participate in keeping the community safe. Reporter there are some businesses still allowed to operate indoors including retail and shopping malls at 25 capacity. Hair and nail salons can stay open with limited capacity and personal care services. We were allowed to open october 7th. The owners of this now salon on College Avenue are critical to consuming. We had to downsize how many people can be here. We are only get maybe 50 capacity. Some days 25. It really depends. I think we are a pretty good example of how it is safe to conduct business. Unlike other bay area counties, Alameda County wont consider other papers or exceptions for Elementary Schools well the county is in the purple tier. Allie rasmus, ktvu fox 2 news. We are learning two top officials from the California Medical Association attended the Birthday Party at the French Laundry restaurant in that field, along with Governor Newsom. We have new photos the governor at that party earlier this month. The woman who took them since she was surprised to see the governor there with a group of at least 12 people in violation of state coronavirus guidelines. The photos were obtained exclusively by our sister station fox 11 in los angeles. We are joined with more details on the photos. Bill, what more can you tell us about these two top officials with the cma at that party with the governor . Reporter alex, good evening. This is adding another layer to a wild story that keeps evolving. But we learned this morning is the ceo of the California Medical Association, as well as one of the top lobbyists for the cma both attended that dinner with Governor Newsom and both are seen in those photos we obtained of that dinner at the napa dinner on november 6. The cma represents about 50,000 frontline physicians battling covid19 every day here in california. They are, the cma is what represents those interests for the doctors at the state capitol. To have their ceo sitting at a dinner with the governor in person, no social distancing, no masks, multiple households, that is not sending the right message. Quite frankly, it is violating the very guidelines they put forward and that they advocate they want the rest of californians to adhere to. Absolutely. Bill, we heard the apology from Governor Newsom this week stating he made a mistake by attending the dinner. Initially, the governor defended the dinner by saying it was held outdoors. Now we see the photos and it certainly doesnt look like that was the case. I know that you talked with the person who took these photos. What more can you tell us about the space where this party was held . The governors apology on monday is being called into question now because as you mentioned, he did say this was an outdoor dinner. A lot of people out of there were questioning and outdoor open space with a lot of people seated with social distancing. The footage showed the direct opposite. It shows 10 to 12 people shoulder to shoulder craned around a table, apparently in that they are in a structure with three walls, a chandelier above them, roof, a road and a sliding glass door that leads to a fourth area that goes indoor outdoor. What the woman who was there told us, the witness, is not Gavin Newsoms party was so loud that that sliding glass door had to be closed because of complaints from other customers. Essentially, it turned into a foreclosed box, which is against all the guidelines that Governor Newsom has been putting out on top of not wearing a mask, on top of not social distancing, and on top of mixing with multiple households. All things he has been telling californians not to do. Bill, as we step back and look at the big picture, the political ramifications are there. The Public Health ramifications is Something Else to look at your. The controversy comes at a critical time, of course. In the state of california, cases are surging. The governor, state Health Officials are putting restrictions in place and urging people to try and stay at home and putting that message out. Do you think the governor runs the risk of people tuning out that safety message and do we have any sense of how the governor is going to try to counteract that . There is a risk of that. The governor admitted that in his apology to get today. He said himself hes worried hes going to lose some of the moral high ground, the moral authority because of his actions at his this dinner. A lot of people out there, democrats, republicans, they feel that what the governor did is the typical do as i say, not as i do rules for them but not for me sort of thing. The governor admitted he is worried his message about wearing a mask, make sure you social distance, dont mix with other households, especially as we head into thanksgiving, hes worried his message is not going to be credible anymore because the average person watching at home is going to say look at the governor, hes at a private dinner mixing with a bunch of people, why cant i have people over for thanksgiving if our state leaders arent doing it . The governor admitted he screwed this up, he apologized and said its never going to happen again. The question is, how bad is this fallout going to be . The governor facing tough questions in a tough spot here. Appreciate you taking the time. That bill militia from our sister station fox 11 in los angeles. We continue to follow the latest elements surrounding state lawmakers, who reportedly flew to a conference in hawaii after california issued a travel warning due to the pandemic. That trip was for an annual conference and fundraiser for the nonprofit independent voter project. The organization isnt releasing the names of the legislators who attended the conference in maui but ethics professes we spoke to the triplicates of do as i say, not as i do. It is the old thought how and i think this is an excuse but they have cabin fever or they are tired of it all. We all are. It is hypocritical to expect the public to do these sort of things. Optics are a good statement about ethics. You want to lead with examples. As many as six california legislators, as well as lawmakers from other states and lobbyists made the trip to hawaii. The sla speakers press secretary tells ktvu it has no information about just who exactly was there. In the last week or so, a lot of items that sold out early on during the pandemic are now selling out once again i made the right in cases and the holiday rush. Ktvu has been looking into the increased demand and tells us what Grocery Stores and Food Companies are doing, tom , in the face of the second surge of sales. This reporter very interesting as we see these numbers. As we hunkered down awaiting vaccines and medicines to create a safety net, we must also create a more rational attitude toward two things. Over biting and hoarding food and supplies. Will this be all . Reporter when the pandemic began, toilet paper, paper towels, disinfectants, sugar, rice, flour, and other items were swept from the shelves. Consumer Brands Association executive katie dennis says no actual pandemic sales only went up 21 above normal, that was enough to create months of shortages that forced rationing. Ultimately, putting in some of those restrictions is responsible and that people buy what they need and not what and what they need. Reporter some over buyers but massive amounts of items and resold them at obscene profits. Though it took time to ramp up and restock, manufacturers have learned a lot. They are better set up. The supply chains are becoming more resilient. Reporter nonetheless, the current biting speck of dust 10 is already causing some shortages. The ceo of the California Grocers Association it is in relation to moving up to the purple tier for the majority of our state. Reporter because manufacturers are already ramping up, it should not last so long this time. I dont think theres going to be a shortage like there was last time for as long as there was before. The manufacturers have pretty much figured it out. Reporter this family owned Village Market in oakland has avoided rationing so far this time around. We cut back on the variety of items we are selling and weve increased the packet size. There are less people doing it this time around. It is uncertainty and worry for people. Reporter beyond any over biting or ordering, this time of year please into this in a good way. Thanksgiving and christmas are the super bowl for Grocery Stores. We have been preparing for the holidays for six months. Reporter there is no shortage of paper products, just a shortage of trucks to deliver them when ordered, which is being corrected. Disinfectant bys continue to be in short supply until new manufacturing lines go into operation in the spring. There should be enough for everyone as long as we follow those principles. Reporter one really major tip, seriously consider having grocery items delivered to you to avoid going into stores that may very well have limits on the number of customers they let in at any one time.
