good evening everyone and welcome to the special election coverage. >> all eyes are on the presidential race, president donald trump and democrat joe biden made one final push for votes today wrapping up what has been an incredibly contentious battle for the white house. polls are just closing moments ago in iowa, montana, nevada, and utah. >> here is a look at that map. this is from fox and it is updating at all times. estates in blue have gone to joe biden, biden has one colorado, illinois, virginia, maryland, the district of columbia, delaware, new jersey, connecticut, rhode island, massachusetts, new york, vermont, and a portion of maine, for a total of 129 electoral votes. president trump has one wyoming, north and south dakota, part of nebraska, kansas, missouri, oklahoma, louisiana, arkansas, mississippi, alabama, tennessee, kentucky, indiana, and west virginia, and also just lay there, south carolina for a total of 109 electoral college votes. 270 is the magic number needed to win for the latest let's get to our political reporter greg lee who has more. >> reporter: what we are seeing so far, when you look at that electoral college map in the states that have been called, republicans with president trump are whizzing winning the state. they are expecting these states. democrats with biden, winning the same. we are not seeing any major upset yet but we are certainly paying a lot of attention to the swing states and a couple of states that are in play that may you would not expect them to be in play. texas being one of them. the last time a democrat won texas was 19 76. so far 51% reporting, president trump a razor thin lead. 51% to 48%. let's go to two states. many pundits have said are crucial for these two have president trump to win for the white house. north carolina 77% reporting, joe biden a tiny margin. 50% over president trump's 49%. in ohio, ohio is a state that no republican president has won the presidency without carrying ohio. 58% reporting, president trump leading joe biden 51% to 48%. let's go to those states in the midwest that many democrats believe is crucial for them to take back from 2016 in order to have a path with 25% reporting very early, president trump leading joe biden 55% to 43%. president trump one the state in 2016. looking at pennsylvania, the official results of their experts have said could take days to count but 26% reporting just the closest of races, or 9% in favor of president trump to joe biden's 48. to florida, major price, 98% reporting we have said throughout the night florida is very good at counting their early votes in their absentee ballots. president trump right now is comfortable, 51% to joe biden's 48%. but we should say, it is very important tonight for people not to get too excited with these early returns. here is joe foley from the san francisco chronicle. >> don't leave it the first thing you see. if you see the early numbers and early returns and that's what we will be hearing over the next couple of days or i shouldn't say the next day, just wait until a state has been called and not called by president trump or joe biden. wait until the officials call it. >> that certainly goes for all the states we talked about maybe barring florida because 98% reporting but that date has not yet been called. of course the presidential race is not the only highly significant race on the ballot. democrats and republicans are fighting for power in congress. in the house, before election day, democrats had the edge. 232 to 197. we have already seen one -- several results call. all of the seats called in the house. in the senate, a number of key races. 35 seats up for grabs. this is what it looked like before election day. republicans with that 53-47 edge. we saw the benefit of them for that as they moved to confirm justice amy cody barrett. a couple of senate races to update you on, a couple of the results. senator lindsey graham in south carolina hold on to beat jamie harrison who put up a good fight. the first flip for democrats so far, former colorado governor john hickenlooper defeated incumbent republican cory gardner. this is a seat that many democrats believed were key for them to win in order to win the senate but again it is just one seat so far. >> from this point what do you think we will be watching the next couple of hours? we have pennsylvania that is really narrowed in just the last few minutes. pennsylvania is now almost the can's neck which many people thought would come down perhaps to pennsylvania. ohio is now neck and neck with president trump slightly in the lead. michigan, president trump is in the lead. what do you watch for with these states because it is so early as we move into the next couple of hours? >> i think the bottom line is if florida eventually goes to president trump, which it looks like it is in good shape for him, this will be a very tight race that could potentially come down to pennsylvania. we should, again point out that election officials have said there that they likely won't count absentee ballots until tomorrow morning. if it truly does come down to pennsylvania which we have seen it do before, we could be waiting for quite some time. a couple of the other races that you mentioned, north carolina and ohio, we did not necessarily think that those races would be terribly close because those are states that president trump carried in 2016. if joe biden wins those states, the path to 270 it's a little more difficult, incredibly difficult for president trump to get there so we will be watching those very very closely throughout the night. >> once again, the electoral map as it stands right now, 129 electoral college votes for joe biden, president trump with 109. 270 is the magic number. greg, thank you. mail-in ballots have been one of the big stories of the selection in the midst of the pandemic. we are live in martinez for you, with a look at how all those votes are being county counted. >> reporter: frank, we are at a church in downtown martinez right across from the elections office and in this last hour of voting we are noticing every station occupied. contra costa has set records for registration, for early turnout, and hopes to set a record for results in about an hour. ballots are being scanned in the elections department running full tilt so that when they hit the tally button at 8 pm the batches that are already processed will pop up as a big number, perhaps half the vote in the initial account alone. contra costa encouraged early voting, made it easy with abundant drop boxes, and those ballots are still flowing in. the county clerk tells me some boxes were crammed full and emptied several times today. lines in the polling places have been lighter than in past years, of course with 65% of the vote in before today there is no need for many people to go stand in line. despite all the early efficiencies, by law the county has 30 days to finalize the results. >> no one gets elected on election night. we have series of audits and we have to process all the rest of the ballots in our provisional ballots and hour conditional registrations and those ballots. it is a methodical process we go through and we have until december 3. it would be nice if we could get done earlier, takes the stress off, but we are not going to have it in a hurry rather than doing it the right way. >> election officials say civic engagement is definitely a winner today. contra costa for example now has a record 700,000 registered voters, that is out of the county of just over 1 million people. as we can see, people are still coming out after casting their ballots in this highly charged election. >> deborah vela live for us tonight, thank you. elections officials in santa clara county say so far more than 650,000 early ballots have been cast. that is an historic high with tens of thousands more people voting in persons today. election officials say they are encouraged by this level of participation. >> we have been excited and encouraged by all of the voters that have seen it out and vote. this is probably one of the best elections i have experienced in my 25 years working in this department. >> elections officials say the usual 60% voter turnout in santa clara county is sure to be broken this year. voters in california have a number of propositions to decide on. props 22 would make at base drivers independent contractors. that would include drivers for companies like jordan ash, uber, and lyft. those companies along with others poured $200 million to support the measure. it would make those drivers exempt from assembly bill five which would require them to be reclassified as employees. >> proposition 15 would raise taxes on some commercial and industrial property owners. the increase would be on commercial and industrial real estate worth more than $3 million based on their current value. the taxes collected would go to schools and local governments. text rakes would remain in place for homeowners. proposition 16 would reinstate affirmative action in california. it would allow the voter turnout in san francisco is expected to be 80% or more. >> reporter: the combination of the presidential cycle, high interest and universal mail-in ballots could mean san francisco will set a record for voter turnout. voters say they are motivated. >> if you are not going to vote today, if it's not important today, when else will it be? was more important today? >> san francisco's michigan, pennsylvania, wisconsin, those of the states that president trump flipped in 2016. we should say that many of these states have said it could take time to get through a massive amount of mail-in and absentee balloting so we could again see those numbers shifting back and forth but a lot of attention was paid by both campaigns in those midwest states because they are so crucial for both of the past for president trump re-creating 2016 and for joe biden creating a path from 2016 and building on taking those dates back in order to create a clear path to 270. think i will just
