Mounds of garbage and debris along monterey highway, a problem for years, made worse because of the pandemic and the homeless encampments now there. New at ten tonight, as in smith with the action being taken and how much was removed on day one. Reporter well, one time equals 2000 pounds, so needless to say, 60 tons of trash is a lot. City leaders to say the majority of the trash is caused by Illegal Dumping, and not homeless individuals. On monday, crews of the city of san jose and Union Pacific railroad began cleaning up massive piles of trash, old appliances, and rundown cars, littering monterey road near Bailey Avenue in south san jose. I said all along when i talked residents about this that i am just as frustrated as they are. Reporter the City Council Member who represents the areas says the debris is the length of a football field. On monday alone, the city picked up 300 tires, and 25 abandoned vehicles. He expects by weekends by the weeks end, 300 tons will be collected. This happened because we did not pay as much attention to this as we need to. And so, i think it just come you know, the larger it gets the more expensive it gets. Reporter he estimates this project will cost the city and Union Pacific railroad who owns part of the property upwards of 300,000, clean up was expedited after residents and businesses complaint. They dont want to come down here because they dont want to see that at all. It is a grim reminder of what the city, the problem the city has right now. It is happy cleanup is finally underway. Yet he hears trash will return in a few months. We are providing industrial grade garbage backs all being cameras along that route. Home first is providing our services. This mother and two children now staying at the community shelter. We need to be more proactive and i think we need to get it to a point where it is mainly like in a maintenance stage of sorts. He says new measures the city is looking at, building a barrier along the avenue to make it less accessible to cars, clearing the brush and streaming down trees to expose those illegally dumping and police patrols. City leaders will discuss allocating an additional 3 million to address blight and water throughout the city as well as ask for cameras to capture video proof of Illegal Dumping. Thank you. President trump says he intends to move quickly to fill vacancies on the high court, and has narrowed down his list of potential nominees to five women. The president met today with one of the hunt runners, judge amy connie barrett. She currently sits on the u. S. Court of appeals in illinois. She is a favorite of conservatives, and already went to the vetting process two years ago when Brett Cavanaugh was nominated. Another name on the president s shortlist is a judge barbara look aware, she is the chief judge of the federal court in miami. Also a conservative, and a cubanamerican. President trump says he will likely announce his nominee on friday or saturday but our political reporter tells us that democrats say the decision should wait until after the election in november. As the nation was the death of Supreme CourtJustice Ruth Bader ginsburg, the political fight over her replacement is intensifying. Massive, it is a political earthquake and i think it is massive were both sides. President trump said he will name a nominee friday or saturday, sunday to majority leader has always already vowed to hold a vote. Its called you pick. People from the Supreme Court. He previously said he will pick a woman, public charges tim rosales says the choice has become a central focus of the election and could give the president a boost, especially with evidence. I think that there is potential advantage of this giving him, maybe even those running for senate, it is going to be come you know, buckle up. Speaking to the publicans out there, senate republicans, who know deep down what is right for the country and consistent with the constitution. Joe biden spoke directly to those gop senators, pleading with him not to follow mcconnell. He said it is argued around the issue of healthcare and the Affordable Care act. Democrats are calling republicans hypocrites after they refused to consider president obamas scotus nominee in 2016, citing the election. That was chairman of the senate Lindsey Graham in 2016. He says he will confirm trumps nominee tweeting being lectured by democrats about how to handle judicial nominations is like an arsonist advising the fire department. It is impossible to not politicize this, but these guys have got to grow a spine. They absolutely have to stand up and commit to the word, the commitment that they made. Of the shoes and the other foot in the democrats were in the white house, and in control of the senate, you know, i would put, i would take it to vegas right now in bet money that they would be doing the exact same thing. Would take for gop members breaking ranks to block the confirmation in the Republican Controlled Senate a senator the asking Susan Collins of albany said they oppose a vote before the election. Cuts could target other vulnerable republicans, and close races. I think is a calculation, i think they will hold the vote until after the election. To let their members, who are in tight and competitive races, take a pass. If the nominee is confirmed it would give conservative a 6 3 advantage of the nations highest court. Law professor Jessica Levinson studies the Supreme Court and says the lifetime appointment could impact major issues in the country for decades to come. Think about all the issues that they would be weighing in on. Voting rights, access to reproductive rights, First Amendment rights, healthcare rights, the rights of immigrants.
