Now make no mistake, the root cause of all of the edds problems was the pandemic. We are looking at the air quality, a little bit of air out there today that wasnt great. Well talk about the improvements coming, and a kind of mild weather pattern. The fiveday forecast and your forecast for tuesday coming up. On wall street, stocks made a comeback late in the day after a major selloff earlier this morning. The dow was down 059 points, just under 2 at the end of trading, but at one point, it had been down more than 900 points. The s p was down 38. The selling was triggered in part by concerns about rising coronavirus cases in europe, as well as fading hopes for more economic stimulus here in the united states, and tensions between the u. S. And china. The Federal Reserve says that americans net worth has rebounded to a record high despite the pandemic and high unemployment. Household wealth climbed 7 in the last quarter, to 119 trillion dollars. The federal data shows that the richest 1 10 of americans own more than 2 3 of the nations wealth. Analyst say this highlights the inequalities in the recovery, with the lowest paying jobs hit the hardest by the reception. The 49ers have their first win of the season, but it came at a cost. A steep one. Injuries, the key players piled up. Joe fonzi joins us with an update on those injuries. Joe . Yeah, julie, the 49ers feared bad news when todays Injury Report was finalized, and thats exactly what they got. They have a rash of injuries in their win yesterday over the new york jets and found out today that one of those injuries is season ending. In just the 49ers second defensive series, last seasons defensive rookie of the year, nick bosa went down. He had his knee crumpled in the pile on a frank gore running play and had to be cut off field. Coach Kyle Shanahan said after the game yesterday that he feared an acl tear, and that was confirmed by an mri today. Bosa is out for the season. He knows a Little Something about rehabbing an injury. He suffered a core injury after just three games of his junior year at ohio state, ending his college career. Its a blow to the 49ers, but they still have 14 games to play. You cant do it with one guy. Everyone has to step it up. Everybody knows how great of a player nick is. Team goes through this. We lost our quarterback at the beginning to the year two years ago. You lose a guy like that, and its tough, but you can look in our room and know there are still last guys who will go out there and play good football and show up for every game. Quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo has a high ankle sprain after yesterdays game. Me has not been ruled out of sundays game. Solomon thomas also injured his knee, but it is not expected to be as severe as nick bosa. Raheem mostert and Kevin Coleman also suffered injuries. This new turf at the stadium in the meadowlands is being need a lot of these injuries, to both teams, and the 49ers have to play on that same turf for their next game as they take on the new york giants. Kyle shanahan was talking about that turf being sticky, or possibly leading to that injuries. Do other stadiums have new turf like met life stadium . Well, the thing with the field turf is they put new turf in about every six or seven years, and when it is new, it has a tendency to be sticky. By all accounts that was the first game played on that turf yesterday. But ive said this for years, especially in a multibillion dollar industry like the nfl, the jets and giants share a stadium. That means there are a total of 16 games on that field. The rest of the teams play 8 times on a field, and as far as im concerned there is absolutely no excuse in the nfl for games not to be played on real grass, and that would not get rid of all of the injuries, but certainly those sticky surf injuries would not be an issue. Yeah. All right, joe fonzi reporting live for us tonight. Joe, thank you. Now to our weather, and our air quality. Here is a live look at our mount diablo camera. Concerns have improve murder will so that today is not a spare the air day, and at least we can see mount diablo here. Bill, what is it like out there . Well, ill get to that, frank. But im wondering what your thoughts on this the turf think that joe was taking about . The niners, i wonder if there is something to do with not having a preseason . Are people exploring that in terms of these injuries. Because these guys are not warmed up when they hit the game at full speed. I dont know, bill, knights turf, its sticky, your foot sticks and all of a sudden your knee bends . I have to agree with joe, youre playing 8 games a year on the turf, or the case of new jersey there, youre playing 16 games. Why not just have real grass . Why not . Well, and i get that. I just keep go back to when you dont have a preseason, youre used to a preseason, and those guys can hit the field 100 . These guys went into it full speed, week one, week two, but, anyway, its a huge story. Ill chat you about it. Okay. So as you look at the air quality right now, it is, as frank mentioned, its not great, but its below a spare the air alert. Its just not great. The yellows, that represents not so good. We described a little bit of wind blowing out of the north yesterday, and a little bit this morning, and that smoke, the dust smoke from some of those northern fires worked their way in. As you can see, these yellows are soon to turn to green, because we have a nice little westerly flow blowing now that is going to allow most of the bay area to clear out pretty quick. Theres the fog. And you probably noticed this afternoon, we had a lot more clearing this afternoon than we did this morning. And as you look at the fog coming in. Its going to be a nice day again tomorrow. It doesnt get hot, but well be deal with a little bit of air quality and dealing with some heat toward this end of the fiveday, towards the weekend, end of the weekend. So nation look at tomorrow. Not hot, better air quality. Fog at the coast. Were looking forward to the weekend next time i see you. All right, bill, thank you. Children with medical conditions like asthma are vulnerable, but healthy kids also appear to be at risk. We are join bids dr. David cornfield. It certainly feels like the air quality has gotten better compared to what it was like a couple of weeks ago, but how concerned are you still . Well, i think one needs to be concerned, because we recognize that wildfires are part of life in california, unfortunately, and we need to be very mindful of air quality at all points currently. And as you guys pointed out in your last segment, its somewhat dynamic. Changes of wind can dramatically affect the climate in a really significant way. So for someone who has young children, is the smoke bad for all children, or just children who have asthma . I think smoke exposure, especially at high levels of particulate matter in the air, are bad for everybody, and i think its fair to say theyre especially bad for young children, and i think some of the reasons that its especially bad for young children, include the fact that kids breathe a lot faster and probably inmate al hail a little bit more air per body surface area than adults. And they also have smaller airways, creating more turbulence for this small particulate matter particles that exist in the air. So overall, i think it would be prudent to do whatever you can to keep your kids protected during these really poor air quality days, when air quality indices are above 100 for sure. People the kids inside, keep them from really participating at high levels of exercise outdoors. If you have air purifiers in the home, or air conditioners, use those, as well, to kind of mitigate the air quality, as much as possible. Doctor, what specifically should you look for . For example, i have two kids. I live in oakland. When i lock at the air quality here, it doesnt affect me, but what should i look at in terms of my kids and thinking about them and how the air might affect them differently from how it might affect me . Well, i think thats a great question, thank you for that. I think i would just divide it up two into different categories. For kids who do have this sort of chronic lung disease, asthma or infants who were premature, born prematurely, or kids with other chronic lung issues, i think watching them carefully to see if theyre developing any respiratory symptomology is important, seeing in their recess pair inventory rate is going up, see if they have more increased risk of breathing, if they have more cough. If theres more if their appetite is down, if theyre more lethargic. Those the first sort of symptoms that one can see when there is the beginning of a respiratory problem. Think for well kids, i think the problem really isnt so much what is happening at the moment, its that there may be some longterm effects relative to the health of their lungs, that there are data that suggests that will might be longterm consequences if youre exposed to significant amounts of particulate matter at an early age, or really at any age. So i think its prudent to limit exposure as much as possible to even asymptomatic or kids who do not have a chronic lung disease. Always better to be cautious. Dr. Cornfield, we appreciate you taking the time to talk with us tonight. Thank you so much. Thank you for reaching out. Good luck to you all. Byebye. Public Health Officials say flu shots are more important than ever this year. Coming up, when doctors say you should get one. Dean winlow said it is especially important to get a vaccine this year because of the covid19 pandemic. Its critically important that everyone get their flu shot. The last thing you want to get is both of these infections. Its possible that people might get both the flu and covid19 at the same time, and we think that that means that that might lead you to have more severe illness. Reporter dr. Doctor sean the Deputy Health officer for Santa Clara County and said the flu hasnt arrived in the south bay yet. The only thing predictable about the flu is its not predictable, and thats doubly so this year with the pandemic. Reporter if Santa Clara County, 8 people under the anyone of 65 died of influenza in the last season. The statistic is not tracked for those 65 years of age and older. I think in the next few months, there will be a Covid Vaccine available, and you will want to have had your flu shot before you get your covid shot, because it does not seem like youre going to be able to get both vaccines on the same day. Reporter Santa Clara County is offering free flu shots at the fairgrounds on saturdays this fall, hoping vaccines help preserve hospital bed capacity. Health experts point out the same measures that helped deter covid19 such as social distancing and facial coverings, also help protect against the flu. Both doctors say the symptoms of the flu and covid19 can be very similar, and the only way that you or your doctor will know the difference is by you getting tested. Julie . One of the upside of the troughs is they keep us cool. They keep fire danger down, or can keep fire danger down. One of the problems we have is when this low, or any low leaves, dynamic low like this, the high jumps in. So were going to go through most of this week crediting with this low.
