Its burned 2700 acres near lake hennessey, east of st. Helena. From sky fox, you can see several fires up in napa county. Actually, we just read that, so lets move on here to our next story. Hundreds of firefighters are battling these fires in extremely hot conditions. Ktvus rob roth tells us with so many fires burning, crews are being stretched then. Reporter cal fire calls the three most serious fires burning in the north bay, the complex fires including the hennessey fire, the gamble, and the 1510. About 400 people said Evacuation Orders wednesday tuesday to low along with those from yesterday. Just as i picked the cat up, lightning struck. Reporter but this man who lives on lower Childs Valley road where the hennessey fire looms above hasnt left yet. Its a very stressful time right now. Our house is just a couple of hundred yards from here, and it doesnt look good. Reporter firefighters say lightning strikes are responsible for these fires. This video was taken by a photographer last night of the gamble fire at north lake berryessa. At one point the fire morphed into into what looms like fiery tornado. An Evacuation Order was issued for residents of the nearby berryessa estates. Operations have been preparing for events like this, but to use a football term, nature is piling on. So not only are we dealing with covid, we have the fires and intensive heat and potential for rolling Power Outages. Reporter napa county has set up an evacuation site at Crosswalk Church in downtown napa. Only a handful stayed there last night. People are evacuated typically go stay with family and friends. Reporter cal fire said between 500 to 600 firefighters have joined the fight, and will is aerial support. Its about 103 where were at right now. It could be warmer on the fire line, and also the access, very rugged per rain. And cal fire said just if the past 24 hours, there have been 60 fires in the area. Another fire is prompting evacuations in sonoma county. The fire has burned about 250 acres in a rural area near the austin creek state recreation area. It was also started by lightning yesterday, about six miles north of gurnville. People who live north of austin creek are being told to evacuate. Along the san mateo coast, more lightning caused fires are setting off Evacuation Orders, the czu lightning complex is made up of a string of at least five different fires in san mateo and Santa Cruz County. There are now evacuation areas in the area of the state park there. People who live in the communities of loma mar and Dearborn Park in southern san mateo county, are also under investigation warnings. All together these fires will have burned about 1,000 acres, and right now, there is no containment. A wildfire sparked by lightning is still burning out of control at this hour. The marsh fire has now burned 585 acres, and its still zero percent contained. It is burning in steep rugged terrain. No homes have been lost, and Evacuation Orders have been lifted. Containment also remains at zero percent for the deer zone fires in Contra Costa County near brentwood. Evacuations ordered sunday for homes along march creek remain in effect. Cal fire said so far no homes have been destroyed. Governor newsom today declared a statewide emergency to help ensure that resources are ready to feist wildfires burning across the state, which have been made worse by the heat wave. I want to show you a live look now at mount diablo in Contra Costa County, where temperatures, again, reached more than 100 degrees today. Bill martin is here now with a look at the conditions that those crews are up against. Bill, we have a pandemic, a heat wave, lightning strikes, and now we have fires all over california. Its just a perfect storage. It really is. But i want to point out, its not this isnt a firestorm, its a bunch of fires caused by a storm, or by a series of thunderstorms that moved through the bay area. Now bring that up, because a firestorm is what were talking about in the coffee park area of santa rosa up in paradise, when you get the big northeast winds that drive these fires, 40, 50 mile an hour winds, and the whole bit, so what we have is a bunch of spot fires. It doesnt mean its great. I mean, its not good. But if you have big wind, theyre youre talking fire storm, and youre in a much different situation. And youll see that by the end of tomorrow, and when you look at the structure and loss, its not going to be what you think it would be in a firestorm in the big winds. I drew up in paradise and have a lot of friends that are concerned, oh, my, a big fire up by or slowville, nearby the dam, and cal fire knows what theyre doing. Theyre go line the ridge lines with fire retardant and there will be fire lines, and just so many that theyre having trouble getting to all of the fires. I here that made sense. In the meantime, its an excessive heat warning continuing tomorrow, and here is the other thing, as you say, frank, perfect storm. The heat warning, heat is the think that kills more people than any other weather event. Turners, hurricanes, tornadoes, flooding, its heat. We are going to be back into the low 100s tomorrow. Maybe not 105 like today, but well be close, upper 90s and low 100s tomorrow. So as you point out, there is a lot going on, yeah. All right, bill, well check back in with you a bit later in the newscast. Thank you. You can doe download the ktvu weather app to stay up to date during this heat wave. You can find hourbyhour temperature jump dates and also send us your weather pictures. Along with a concern about fires, the hot weather, also has californians bracing for the possibility of rolling Power Outages again tonight. The operators of the states power grid have called a stage 2 knowledge and are now asking people to conserve power. If they go to stage 3, it means utilities like pg e will need to shed load by shutting off Electrical Service for tens of thousands of customers. Ktvus tom vacar has more now on why this seems to happen at the end of a really hot day. Where california gets its power from is a big reason were in the dilemma were in. Since our last mega heat wave, more than a decade ago, california has taken about 15 to 20 of it natural gas fueled power plants out of service, plus the huge Nuclear Power plant. Theyve been replaced with solar and wind, which to the cheap, super cheap and green, cannot be switched on like traditional power plants according to a Berkeley Energy economists. Its they are constrained by whether the wind is blowing or sun is shining. They are noting . We can just say we want yoopera told pg e and other utilities to warn of possible outages. That information was information we provided also on sunday and monday, and alsoly did not end up being the case but we wanted to make sure that we alert our customers, at least to the high possibility of it, because we would like them to have the opportunity to prepare. Reporter adam demand was skyrocketing yesterday at 3 00 p. M. , customers finally paid attention to conservation pleas. We had a dramatic flattening of load curve like weve never seen before, and we believe its all attributable to the great work that people did to conserve. We havent seen height like this since 2006. Reporter volunteer calls for conservation help occasionally, but theres a lot of evidence that if you consistently ask people to voluntarily conserve, you get conservation fatigue, and people stop conserving as much. Reporter so blackouts today, tomorrow, and even as heat returns next week could still happen. The most important hours are 6 00 p. M. To 9 00 p. M. Thats when the demand is very high and the solar rolls off. Reporter since black you know risks remain, pg e has just set up a website, where you can type in your address and learn in or not you are scheduled for an outage. Weve put a link too that on our website, ktvu. Com. Tom vacar, ktvu fox 2 news. Coming up here, we take a look at what is on tap for the second night of the Democratic National convention. The big names set to appear. Plus how Silicon Valleys Big Tech Companies are stepping up to help bridge the Digital Divide as students wrestle with distance learning. Then at 6 30, nancy pelosi accuses the Trump Administration of trying to sabotage the Postal Service for political game. The announcement from the postmaster general today in response to the national criticism. And a live look at traffic on 880, right past what do we call it now is not oracle arena. Smooth sailing tonight there on 880. Well be back with more after this. Last night we got a look at how a Political Convention held virtually during a pandemic. Here is a live look at what is stream right now. This is stacy abrams talking. For accountability and integrity in our system of justice. We stand with joe biden, because this isnt just about defeating donald trump. We are in this to win for america. So lets get it done. Michelle obama was last nights headliner, and she did not mince words in her criticism of President Trump. Greg lee is here now. Greg, what are we expecting tonight . Yeah, frank, a lot of the buzz last night and still today was about Michelle Obama and her scathing words towards President Trump. President trump called the speech very divisive today, and was critical of Michelle Obama prerecording that speech. Stacy abrams was the headliner out of a group of 17 upcoming rising stars in the Democratic Party taking a unique approach to what we would see a keynote speech and breaking it up among 17 people, and ill be honest, a little bit hard to follow, that but that led off tonights coverage of the dnc and the virtual convention. I want to play for you a little piece of that speech that kind of launched the even, tonight. Take a listen. This is a different kind of keynote. This year all of us are on the stage, and beach got a lot to say. Lets get real. Theres a lot riding on this election. When were facing the biggest economic and Health Crisis in generations. Now, in addition to that keynote speech that we just heard, we will also hear from dr. Jill biden, the former second lady, and, of course, wife of joe biden, who will close the evening in the spot where Michelle Obama was last night, and well get a very striking and emotional plea to voters in a very personal terms, obviously, because she is the wife of joe biden. We will also hear tonight from progressive congresswoman alexandria ocasiocortez. There was some drama, because she is only slated to speak for about 670 seconds. Progressives wanted to here more from her, and thats kind of the job of joe biden to try and build this bridge between progressives and the more mod vat rats of the party. Well hear from Collin Powell who has endorsed joe biden. Powell a republican, and that continues that conversation about saying disaffected republicans can vote and are encouraged to vote for joe biden in this race, frank. You really cross that bridge with progressives by only giving alexandria ocasiocortez 60 seconds . You would think that given her stature, and her importance to the progressive side, that they might want to give her a little bit more time, wouldnt you . Reporter and that has been a large undertone of what were seeing, and also we should mention a roll call tonight where the delegates are divvied up, and biden is officially made the partys nominee. Obviously a lot of those delegates will go to senator Bernie Sanders who spoke last night and gave kind of a full throated endorsement of joe biden, but many progressives today said this party needs to do better in reaching out to us as progressive note voters. Ive spoken to several california delegates san diego today who said they still want to hear that they will be heard if biden hin others their vote, that joe biden willing do things that they support. I think its a delicate balancing act for the biden campaign, frank. Greg lee, live for us tonight. Greg, thank you. And a reminder here that you were can stay with ktvu for coverage of the didntic National Convention. The main speakers will be shown uninterrupted beginning at 7 00 tonight on both ktvu and ktvu plus, and well have similar coverage for the region were convention, which kicks off next week. The president made the announcement this morning at an event at the white house. Anthony, along with Elizabeth Katy stanton were among the most prominent leaders in the fight for womens suffrage. Russia did try to help the president President Trump win the 2016 election. The Senate Select committee on intelligence found that Paul Manafort and wick by likes were used by russia. The report said that manafort collaborated with russians before, during, and after in slick. When asked about the findings, President Trump said quote its all a hoax. Another hot one out there today. That excessive heat warning is going to be in effect tomorrow, including places like san jose and oakland. Its not just inland, its most of the bay area, except right along the immediate coastline. The red flag warning has been dropped. The air quality is not great because of the smoke and numerous fires around the bay, and its just going to continue with the high fire danger and the high heat through tomorrow. Thats the plan. And then we start to cool off a little bit, as we get into thursday. Boy, just it feels like huston, it feels like somewhere other than the bay area, and it blocks like houston. Well not be it doesnt look like houston, but its just humid, and its sticky, and we do occasionally get humidity like this. But you have to remember where this air mass came from. It cam from the tropic of capricorn, or canner, and that moisture from a dying Tropical Storm just streamed in, and its Still Dreaming in. 107 in antioch, and 105 in livermore for highs today. Ill return to look at the five day forecast in a new minutes. Coming up, victims of the Golden State Killer give emotional testimony as a judge gets ready to hand down his sentence. Theyre all underserved communities in San Francisco. For this motherdaughter duo, its better here than on the streets. Its a great feeling from not having anything and being in the shelter, and being able to sustain her and i. Reporter but that, too, has its challenges, especially with all loving going online. And that computer has become a key part of the puzzle. I love helping communities, because when i was growing up, i didnt get in the help, and i want to close that cycle. Reporter Leonardo Sosa started a mission to get computers into the hands of families in need. Its a great joy. Just imagine High School Kids trying to apply to college on a cellphone. Its not going to work. They need access to a computer. Having a computer at home, its also essential. The family can benefit. They can become financially stable. Theres a lot of resources on line. Reporter a 2019 San Francisco study shows 1 in 8 families dont have highspeed internet, and 1 in 7 dont even have a computer. The mission has helped teach dozens of young adults Technology Skills and some graduates are rushing to refurbish and give out computers as a way to give back.
