Schools reopened they are expected to have inperson instruction with a mixture of face to face and distance learning. We have the professor of Infectious Diseases at usc, they will be reopening schools. It would seem in Santa Clara County with an emphasis on distance learning. The cues it sounds like you are going to be the physical distancing among as many kids as possible Wearing Masks and a lot of handwashing and an emphasis on keeping things clean. Are you confident this will be enough to keep everyone safe in the School Environment . I do not want to say i am confident. It is very heartened to find a balance and provide the best education to our children and at the same time make sure if they are safe. When you mention this its important that we keep the social distancing, we need to wash her hands and wash the childrens hands and make sure that they follow the guideline to minimize the exposure to the virus. I feel that it is important to really help the in Person Education but at the same time really make sure the children are safe. And also we need to train our Teaching Staff and school staff because they have a higher exposure than the children. They are in an environment with a lot of exposure to the virus. There is a lot of talk about how the safety protocols will be different for younger kids, Elementary School aged children as opposed to middle school kids and high schoolers. How will that differ from a safety standpoint . We cannot uniformly apply the guidelines from k to 12. I think with smaller make sure the environment is clean. For example, provide handwashing very frequently for the younger children. They may not strictly follow the guideline to wear the mask and keep the social distancing. And also another point that id like to point out, the school needs to improve the infrastructure such as for example the classroom, the gym, and make sure that the environment is the best to protect the children. For example, we need to make sure that airflow is good. The air is really regularly in an environment because we know that the virus has a better chance to transmit in the airflow in that environment. And so i think we need to do our best to not only make sure the children follow the guidelines but we also need to beef up the infrastructure. In the classroom we should provide face masks and hand sanitizers and more importantly, i think the central airconditioning and the airflow should be very open. As much as possible. Make sure that the virus has a very good chance to stay in the classroom. All right. We are going to see how it plays out coming up this fall. Professor of Infectious Diseases. Thank you for your time. Thank you for having me here today. Spreading beyond the walls of san quentin trios tents are set up outside at dozens of inmates have been transferred to bay area hospitals. Coming up, it is being called black is beautiful. The new beer being created in craft breweries all across the country. We will tell you how it supports minority communities. Addressing economic insecurity. The oakland mayor joins 10 other mayors in support of a guaranteed income. Coming up after the break, she joins us live to discuss her plans to lift people out of extreme poverty. A babe area weather with lots of sunshine. We will take a look at how your wednesday forecast looks coming up. The oakland mayor has iran other mayors across the country in support of a guaranteed income to lift people out of extreme poverty. The city of stockton was the first to try universal base income. Low income people who were given an extra 500 per month spent the money on food and clothing. The mayors who support this idea says that will help ease inequality particularly in communities of color. Thank you so much, mayor, for being here. Lets talk about why you supported. It is an idea whose time has come. Martin luther king jr. Introduced this idea of guarte income more than 50 years ago. But today in light of protests around economic inequality, Racial Injustice and as we see the coronavirus demonstrating just how fragile our economy is, we need this type of Transformative Program right now. The idea is simple. People under a certain income need to have the guaranteed income. This is not to replace the safety net. It is to eliminate the bureaucratic red tape and empower people to make their own economic choices. We know that 40 of americans cannot even whether a 400 economic crisis. The disparities in wealth particularly between white and black americans is unconscionable. Guaranteed income or what people call basic income is an idea that has proven to be effective, costefficient and something that will truly move people to economic security. Are you planning to launch a Pilot Program in your city . That is one of the commitments of the 11 founding mayors from across the country. I am proud to be in this group led by stockton mayor Michael Tubbs. It includes the mayor from atlanta, los angeles, and we have all committed to piloting a basic income or guaranteed Income Program in our cities. And then taking from it to abdicate for statewide and eventually national policy. We believe this is the way forward and particularly as the nature of work has changed, many people do not get all their income from an Employment Relationship which Unemployment Insurance is designed toincome inequality and just a need for a more just and fair society. There are some critics out there. What do you say to those who believe this is a waste and an unearned reward. Well, we have to recognize that we have put policies in place that have unfairly rewarded certain people at the expense of others. This is an opportunity for us to undo that. Its an efficient use of government resources. It is not subject to redtape. It is not 10 different programs designed to address one particular need. As we saw from the pilot in stockton, people know how to spend this money. They have been spending it on the basic necessities of life. Food. Rent. Utility bills. We have seen mayor tubbs told the story of someone who was able to take time off work to look for a better job, a job that pays more. People need to return to school to upscale so they can become more financially stable. We believe that this is a christian that will allow people to undo the unfair economic systems that we have had in place for so long. Oakland mayor, libby schaaf to.
