Are dealing with illegal fireworks. Good evening everyone. The concern comes as the National Weather service issued a red flag warning in parts of the north bay. It just went into effect a moment ago. We have Live Team Coverage tonight, Azenith Smith with the concerns about fireworks. First we begin with chief meteorologist bill martin who is tracking the current conditions. Definitely the wind is coming up, the wind direction will shift around. This low Pressure Center that came in this morning brought the wind and brought the cool to mild weather that set us up with the Pressure Gradient that will give us some pretty significant trend in the wind. Most will not notice the fire concern wind, but in the Higher Elevations you will. Gusts can be up to 50 miles per hour. This red flag warning for the hills stays in effect through tomorrow night. The wind forecast, this is about 5 am tomorrow morning commander, you can see the real wind in the contours, right around clearlake, napa, thats where the strongest winds will be. Most of the bay area, south and east will be out of the red flag zone. But again, red flag warning just went into effect in stays in effect. When we come back we will take a look at the forecast that does include increasing temperatures. Azenith smith joins us now with a message from officials as they work to deal with a lot of via work related calls. Reporter some cities in the bay area began selling safe fireworks that fire officials are urging people to use extreme caution given the warm temperatures and dry conditions as they brace for a busy week ahead. Im just trying to avoid the ones that stream. This is the first day customers can purchase the safe and sane fireworks. Sales have been unbelievable. For nonprofits, fireworks sales are one of the few fundraisers during covid19. There are three cities that have fireworks approved by the state. Nothing that blows up, nothing that shoots in the air, no firecrackers, those are all illegal. These are illegal fireworks happening throughout the bay area almost every night. Well ahead of the july 4 holiday. Definitely we can see and hear the activity. We do get calls fire related and just through citizen complaints. On sunday the Oakland Fire Department says illegal fireworks were to blame for a brush fire in the oakland hills. Alameda county fire said theyve had an uptick of fire work related fires in the last few weeks. Weve been keeping them small to this point, and the weather has been cooperating with us. The weather will be with them over the next few days. The red flag warning is in effect in the north bay mountains and high elevations in parts of marin, sonoma and napa counties. With the wind increasing, its a definite concern. We willincrease staffing as needed. On the fourth we will have that day. This man buying safe and sane fireworks for his four yearold son. I think people are just buying out because the big celebrations are off and they will have more private celebrations. Customers are urged to practice safety and due diligence. Hopefully people will celebrate responsibly and have fire extinguishers on hand. Many Law Enforcement agencies are well aware of illegal fireworks but say siding violators is difficult because its often unclear exactly where these fireworks are coming from. Those caught could be fined and be liable for any damages. And uptake in fireworks can mean an uptick in injuries. At 10 30 a bay area doctor tells us about the gruesome injuries seen lately and her warning for people ahead of the fourth of july. Not to the coronavirus pandemic. There are more than 2 1 2 million cases in the United States now and more than 125,000 deaths. California added nearly 5000 cases today there are now more than 215,000 cases statewide and nearly 6000 people have died. Here in the bay area there are nearly 28,000 cases and 568 people have died. The number of people in the hospital with coronavirus hit another record today as well. 83 more people were hospitalized in the last 24 hours in california meaning there are now more than 4500 people in hospitals around the state. Its the ninth straight day that california has reached a new record for hospital patients. In the bay area hospitalizations are at their highest number since may 1. There are 340 coronavirus patients in hospitals around the nine bay area counties. Governor newsom today ordered bar owners that opened in seven bay area counties to close immediately. The governor made the order amid a rapid spread of the coronavirus in some parts of the state. Los angeles is the most populous county affected by the mandatory order. The other counties are fresno, san joaquin, kings, kern, imperial and tulare. State officials also asked eight other counties to issue local orders. The others are sacramento, riverside, san bernardino, ventura, Santa Barbara and stanislaus counties. The recommendation comes as some bar owners were just preparing to open their doors in the coming days. Greg liggins is here tonight and joins us after talking to a bar owner about the governors actions. Reporter as you know california was the model for flattening the curve but now we are starting to see those numbers rise. Just as things are starting to move forward, more and more people are getting out and about, more businesses reopening. We are starting to see some efforts to put on the brakes. Pleasant hill will normally be bustling on a sunday, but makes a cocktail of the coronavirus and view sports to display on flat screens and you can understand why the bar is still closed. According to contra costa countys roadmap, bars are on the list to reopen july 1. But with climbing covid19 cases, the governor is mandating some bars close and recommending bars in contra costa and santa clara and other counties do the same. Im not surprised, just tallying around to Outdoor Dining situations id say over half the places i went to were not practicing social distancing. So, you know, a bar is kind of the worst Case Scenario to practice social distancing. Mccann is planning for a best Case Scenario reopening in august or september. Bars are one pixel in the Bigger Picture that has counties like San Francisco and marin pressing pause and moving to the next reopening phase. An indication there is a risk of sliding backwards. Weve been the model of the nation for covid prevention , sort of like flattening the curve. I think that is where leadership has been right now in terms of trying to nip it in the bud or before we become texas, florida or arizona. The fourphase reopening plan seems to have hit a speed bump in phase 2, they issued conference of guidance for safely reopening but seeing people flout those guidelines is frustrating because they could be setting back progress for everyone. Of course its frustrating. You expect people to do the right thing, and its one of these things where we are all in this together and it takes just a few people to really mess it up and basically affect businesses. Dr. Chen hong says they do have some data on why the numbers in california are starting to go up. One thing he says is more young people are getting out. He also says there has been some Contact Tracing done in and around the sacramento area that shows many cases are coming from large family gatherings that have been connected to recent graduations. Greg liggins life first, thank you. Vice president mike pence was in dallas texas today, that state has also seen a surgeon coronavirus cases. We will put the health of the people of the Lone Star State first, and every single day we will continue to reclaim our freedom and our way of life as each day we are one day closer to the day we put this pandemic in the past. Earlier the Vice President and that Texas Governor held a briefing. The governor urged the people of texas to do their part to keep the virus from spreading, including wearing a mask and social distancing. The number of cases in the United States as we mentioned at the top of the newscast has gone up in 30 states, just last friday they reported the highest number of cases in a single day with more than 40,000 infections. Nationwide there have been more than two have million confirmed cases and sadly 125,000 people have died. Health officials in texas say hospitals are filling up fast. Hospitals right now are operating with about 90 percent, nearly 100 intensive care unit beds being occupied in several hospitals in the city of houston. Health officials in florida reported more than 9500 new cases today, that is a single day record since the start of the pandemic connecticut and rhode island are the only two states that have seen a drop in the number of cases compared to last week. Also today speaker of the house nancy pelosi called for a nationwide mask mandate. She said the requirement for everyone to wear a Face Covering in public is long overdue. She criticized President Trumps refusal to set an example and adopt the practice against cdc recommendations. Ella fournier already requires facial coverings in most situations outside of the home. Just look for the colors. These are the forecasted wind speeds. You can see where the areas with the strongest wind will be. And of course the red flag warning is most concerning above 1000 feet with gusts going up to 50 miles per hour. After that, watch how quickly it backs down. See the contours, so the attacks will back way off as we get into tomorrow afternoon. So late tonight, somewhere between three and six in the morning will be the strongest it winds. Theres the life camera shot, some patchy fog was trying to form at the coast. A little fog may return tomorrow night but its kind of getting a bit of a break. The current wind speeds in concord are 60 miles per hour, but when they start to go tonight, they will start coming out of this direction, more northerly, and funnel in the north bay. But i dont think we will notice much here in the bay area. The wind is a response to that low Pressure Center. That will be in the next five hours or so. Again, i think places that will notice it will be santa rosa, kind of out there by hills berg in those areas in the hills above 1000 feet. As we head into the rest of the week temperatures will warm up. Not crazy hot, but warm. Fire wind late tonight in the north bay and then temperatures will come up a little bit. We will talk about that when i see you back here for the five day. Starbucks is pausing all ads on social media as part of a wider effort to stop the spread of hate speech. Its now part of a growing list of companies that is boycotting facebook despite promises made last week by the ceo. On friday zuckerberg said facebook will do more to combat hate speech ahead of the 2020 president ial election. The San Francisco supervisor matt haney is pushing to remove Mark Zuckerbergs name from general hospital. He posted a long thread on facebook and twitter today which questioned whether it was appropriate to keep his name in the hospital given the recent criticism toward facebook. Well have some catching up to do. A man suspected of being the Golden State Killer is said to plead guilty tomorrow. In exchange, the 74yearold will avoid the Death Penalty. It might be the biggest trial t a name and a case that strikes a chord with people all across northern california. Joseph dangelo, the man suspected of being the area in Golden State Killer. Anyone from sacramento from the 80s knows the east area. He was arrested in 2018 after spending years undetected. Sacramento county superior court confirmed that the latest hearing will take place on the Sacramento State campus. The Attorney Says the location is a bit unusual. To have it heard at the sac state ballroom is truly unique. Dozens of victims and family members are expected to be in attendance. Something that may have prompted the decision to move to a larger venue. I think this is driven by the covid epidemic. Normally i think they would just allow a certain number of people in the courtroom. The hearing is scheduled for monday where prosecutors are expected to strike a plea deal to avoid the Death Penalty. I can 2019 governor gavin newsom signed an executive order placing a moratorium on the Death Penalty in the state of california. Its possible that the next governor wont impose it. The likelihood that he will receive the execution of the Death Penalty is so remote. After years of waiting for answers and justice, the latest hearing may bring closure for everyone following the Golden State Killer case throughout the years. Now we have a guilty plea, i think that is what will happen. We have a guilty plea, guilty finding. No more trial, no more guessing, no more speculation or fighting. That type of fidelity is probably good for everyone. We will have Team Coverage of the hearing tomorrow from sacramento. Blooms often look like sick, paint like scum floating on the surface. They can be green, white, red and brown. Coming into contact with the blooms can cause eye irritation, skin rash, mouth ulcers, vomiting, diarrhea and cold and flu like symptoms. Hospitals in the bay area have been seeing more fire work related injuries in the past few weeks. We talked to a doctor with the ucsf department of orthopedic surgery. We see partial amputations, burns that affect the torso, the eyes, the face and arms. We see inhalation injuries associated with fireworks. About 30 of the time its related to hand and forearm injuries. I remember a couple of years ago a man shooting off fireworks blew off his hand and some of his fingers and he is now maimed for life. Does it take a lot, i know this is kind of graphic to ask, what does it take a lot to blow off a finger or hand . Because i wonder sometimes if people think the fireworks arent as dangerous as they think. That is an excellent question. Most of the injuries are related to small fireworks as simple as sparklers and bottle rockets. So we kind of see a lot of injuries with those, and weve seen the full spectrum right now with the illegal fireworks with more intense injuries. But weve seen really bad buspa injuries. Dr. Schroeder says ers across the country see roughly 10,000 fire work related injuries a year. She says the best advice is actually the simplest advice, that is stay away from fireworks entirely. The rally was organized by advocates and loved ones of prisoners. Like jason to foye, his son is high risk, he is hivpositive and has asthma. Having asthma he can catch it and be put on a ventilator. He is especially concerned because of how difficult it is to keep proper distance behind prison walls. Social distancing, is really, you cant do it. The cell is five by 10. You have two People Living in the cell, so they cant social distance. Outbreak started when more than 100 inmates were transferred there at the end of may. San quentin went from zero cases to several hundred in a matter of weeks. Protesters say the California Department of corrections and governor gavin newsom failed to keep the risen population safe or they want inmates released, and for the state to reduce the prison population. Its endangering the lives of people inside. Eddie was formally incarcerated in hopes the message reaches the governor and ones safety changes throughout the entire prison system. Because this is a Public Health crisis, there is no time. The action needs to be taken right now. I reached out to san quentin as well as the California Department of corrections and so far they have not returned my calls or emails. Florida set a new daily coronavirus record yesterday with more than 9500 confirmed cases. The county order also dance gatherings or parades with more than 50 people. And weve got some warmth coming your way plus the red flag warning in the hills. All of that in the five day forecast when i see you next. Also, a big change is coming to the Mississippi State flag. Coming up, the bipartisan vote to remove the confederate emblem. Joe biden held Virtual Campaign events this weekend as reason polls show him leading President Trump in some key swing states. Reporter a number of polls show joe biden has an edge over President Trump when it comes to Race Relations and biden also leads with women. In the data, he is backing up groups, it shows that most of his fulltime staff are women of color. 50 are female and 50 of the senior staff is female. But he also implicitly accused President Trump supporting racial division. The white house says the president did not hear the language of the video he tweeted. Biden said today the president shared a video of people chatting white power and said they were great just like he did after charlottesville. In the meantime biden also leading a tax on trumps Foreign Policy after a report alleged the president and his administration knew about russia secretly offering bounties to kill american troops since march. The white house disputes it. I then says if the report is true trump has done worse than nothing by offering to host Vladimir Putin in the United States. It would be a shocking relation that if the report is found true, then President Trump, the commander in chief, has known about this for months according to the times and done worse than nothing. Biden said he was outraged by the report and if he is elected putin will be confronted. Mississippi lawmakers have voted to remove the confederate emblem from the state flag. The vote received bipartisan support. The republican governor says he plans to sign the bill and the state flag will lose the official status as soon as he does. Mississippi was the last day to still have the confederate emblem on the flag. There is now a push to change the name of an airport in southern california. The largest airport in Orange County named for john wayne. Used to be the political home for southern californias conservatives. Now democrats are pressuring supervisors to remove waynes name, statue and likeness from the airport. A young girl from the east bay is using her art skills to help spread positivity. How she hopes gratitude boxes will help people during these tough times. And our chief meteorologist bill martin ready to go with your complete forecast next as we look at a beautiful shot there of city hall in San Francisco. During these tough times it could be difficult to remain positive but now a young girl from danville is helping to spread gratitude with her new business. When i talk to Cienna Lazarus she sounded like a seasoned entrepreneur, but shes actually only 10 years old now she is spending her summer inspiring others to be positive. With a pallet in one hand and a paintbrush in the other, Cienna Lazarus is doing what she does best. For this 10yearold, creating art isnt always rainbows and butterflies. I like the small brushes. Co today marked the final day of San Franciscos pride weekend. The coronavirus pandemic led to the cancellation of the big parade on maurkice street and other events that would have normally taken place in the city. This 50th anniversary of pride weekend is mostly a virtual celebration but last night the Pink Triangle was lit up. For the past 25 years the Pink Triangle has been put on display on twin peaks. This year lights have been replacing the fabric we normally see. The display will be up until july 10. Even though the annual pride parade was canceled in chicago, thousands of people still took to the streets. Rather than a parade filled with floats, their march was communitybased. They also called a protest, not a party and highlighted other issues such as racism and police violence. Pride is also celebrated worldwide, hundreds of people rallied in jerusalem today hurried during the rally a moment of silence was held for a 16yearold girl who was stabbed to death during a pride parade five years ago. So we are looking at this red flag warning in the north bay and partially in the east bay hills above 1000 feet. Tonight it started an hour ago and lasts through tomorrow evening. Its because of this low Pressure Center that brought the cooler weather today. Beautiful shot out there now, fogg has had a tough time reforming, due to the strong wind gusts, they could go up to 40 to 45 miles an hour in the hills, most of us will not notice much because it will be more north northwesterly. The wind right now is still westerly, so it will be a northwesterly wind going toward the south and east. But right now that winds is relatively light. I think for clear lake, cloverdale, the far northern reaches of our climate, you guys will notice the wind much more than say, san jose or saratoga or fremont. The for fogg is getting chewed away from the coast by the wind. Temperatures are cooler, well, way off, about the same. Santa rosa is actually a little warmer. Thats where the air sinks the highpressure and the areas will be warming up quickly in response to the offshore wind. Today was a cooler day generally. No fog tomorrow morning, San Francisco ends up in the low 70s tomorrow with kind of an offshore pattern. Fire danger is certainly elevated, but it is not a big heat day, its about the wind in the elevations far north of the east bay. Theres the footprint for tomorrow, and it will warm all week, we will see plenty of temperatures back into the low 90s. Nothing really extreme going on, even this wind event tonight doesnt appear to be an extreme wind event. Far north you will find some significant winds. And there is the forecast. Temperatures, most of us are right here in the middle, these are the high and, this is just for antioch and livermore, you can see the numbers in the low 90s through the week. Again, its that time of the year, we will see warmer weather this week, so if you see something strange, just call 911, and they will come out. Despite marin county pausing their efforts to reopen, the National Park service is reopening recreational access to Muir Woods National monument. Good evening everyone, heres whats happening in sports. Even though he trailed brendan todd by two strokes, we somehow had a feeling that Dustin Johnson would have were to say to the travelers. No people in the gallery but they didnt say anything about the dogs as he was coming off his best career round yesterday at 61. Mackenzie hughes finished two shots back but he put together a nice shot of 67 today hurried with maybe the best part of the day with a birdie at 17. Johnson was playing in the last group with todd and made his move as todd faded johnson with the birdie in number 8 that moved him into a tie for the lead. Then after taking the lead with a birdie on 9, johnson had this effort off the green at number 10, dead center with his putter, and his Third Straight birdie. Nice save by johnson at 15, not afraid to get his feet wet with a shot that didnt exactly go to where he wanted it to but he was still able to say par on the home. And he backed up his 61 yesterday with the 67 today. Johnson has now won at least one tournament for 13 straight years. The record is 17 held by a couple of names fans might recognize, Arnold Palmer and jack nicholas. It was groundhog day at pocono, two official nascar races in as many days, rain delayed the proceedings for nearly an hour. This is not how kyle busch wanted to finish his day. He spun down and hit the wall after making contact and was finished after 74 laps coming in 38. Hamlin took the checkered flag, the first driver to win four times this year, also his sixth win at pocono tying with jeff gordon for the most on that track. Theres been a lot of talk but we do have confirmation tonight that Major League Baseball players will be working out at 24 Willie Mays Plaza on friday. They will begin spring training for the giants and it will look nothing like the spring training we saw back in february and march. New protocols for sanitation, ethical contact and social distancing will be in place. Many bugs still to be worked out like exactly how it gets covered from our standpoint. They will be on the field on friday with a similar timeline for the as at the coliseum. We will soon have some current stories on which to reflect it in the meantime we still do have this day in sports history. A wild interleague game between the as and giants on this day in 2016.
