Reporter on the other side of the bay there were scattered protests including a rolling protest with drivers holding up signs and honking their horns in solidarity with black lives matter. At city hall, hundreds gathered demanding the city shift funding away from police and remove officers from city schools. Reporter those protests were not limited to San Francisco and oakland. In the south bay a number of events were held celebrating juneteenth. Some faith leaders gathered outside the Presbyterian Church in san jose and announced they will hold of faith leaders march tomorrow to express their solidarity with black lives matter and to call for Law Enforcement reforms. They say hundreds of faith leaders and their congregants will walk together through downtown san jose to mark the occasion. [ singing ] reporter each year in june, many africanamericans gathered to sing songs of pain, progress, and pride. Since 1865, celebrations on the 19th have marked juneteenth. When you are black being joyful and having fun is an act of rebellion, just having fun. Those words speak to ones two centuriesold. Despite the emancipation proclamation all slaves were not freed until the Union General landed in galveston, texas of 1865 to enforce the proclamation which was more than a month after the civil war had ended. African enslaved persons had no reason to celebrate independence until 1865 when they found out that in fact they were free. All americans can celebrate the freedom of all americans and not just white americans who had freedom but also africanamericans who became free. Reporter it signifies the liberation of our people as slaves and we are using that now to be able to speak to that. We liberated our people and the pests. Reporter a celebration enjoyed by brown people is enjoyed by the tapestry of humanity. This galvanizes some for the fight for future progress. So many of us are so tired of seeing the same things occur over and over. This generation deserves better. We will stand together with them. Senator Kamala Harris says she and three other senators are working on a bill that would make june 19 of federal holiday. It has been a state holiday in texas since 1980. A texas senator backs the idea of National Recognition and will introduce a bill to make it a federal holiday. He was shot and killed last month was standing guard during a protest outside the Federal Building in downtown oakland. Rob roth joins us with more on the familys message today. As sad as his death is, his family had a message of hope in these difficult times. We are here to celebrate patrick. Reporter family, friends and Law Enforcement officers came to say goodbye to David Patrick underwood and perhaps find a way forward from the violent act that took his life. I am angered by my brothers death. I am not angry. We cannot let anger and emotion driver lives. Reporter underwood died in a driveby shooting during a protest that turned violent. He was a protective Service Officer for the department of homeland security. A second officer was wounded. Patrick was a hero to west. We commend him for his life that he put on the line for all of us. He needs to be recognized as a hero. Reporter Police Arrested two bid for murder after Sergeant Damon gutzwiller was shot to death. We will carry on his legacy. We will remember his name. Underwood grew up and graduated from tunnel valley high school. Every weekend our family including our great grandmother, grandmother, aunts, uncles and cousins would go to Fernandez Park and be the loudest people there. Coworkers described him as a hardworking employee. Friends say he treated everyone with respect and those he cared about as if they were brothers. Those who spoke expressed hope for a positive change. I hope and trust that this righteous path will lead us to the end of discrimination against any person of color or anyone that wears a badge. David Patrick Underwood was 53 years old. A Community Mourning the loss of that member tonight. In the meantime, one of the suspects in the killing of mr. Underwood made an appearance in federal court today. Robert alvin justus appeared for a hearing via teleconference. He is charged with aiding and abetting Steven Carrillo who allegedly shot at a Federal Building killing underwood and wanting another guard. The judge appointed an attorney for justus and he is ordered to return to court next wednesday for arraignment. A Funeral Service was held today for alluding suspect who was shot and killed by a Vallejo Police officer. Family and friends gathered at the chapel by the sea. The 22yearold was from San Francisco. A Vallejo Police officer shot him after responding to reports of looting at a walgreens. He was on his knees but the officer thought that a hammer in his pocket was a gun. John purvis an attorney for his family who attended the funeral says he intends to file a lawsuit against the city of vallejo. We will be filing federal civil rights lawsuits in the near future. First we want to get the District Attorney issue out of the way. I anticipate that we will keep the pressure on their and we will keep pressing. He also said before filing the lawsuit he will demand the officer be criminally charged by the Solano County District Attorney.
