After a two day manhunt the suspect in the shooting of a sheriff deputy in paso robles was killed in a shootout with robbers officers. Mason james lira of monterey was killed after leading officers on a manhunt yesterday afternoon. This was a long riverbank in paso robles with bullets flying back and forth before lira was shot. He opened fire at the peso robles Police Station on wednesday and then ambush a response in deputy. He is also suspected of shooting and killing a homeless man. Officials say they tract him down twice wednesday night, but he got away both times. Yesterday afternoon officers began a search of the riverbed where he was last spotted and they say he began shooting, hitting an officer from their Rio Grande Police department in the calf. A second shootout about an hour later wounded officers from the city of kings county. Lira was eventually shot and killed. He had two loaded guns that were stolen in a commercial burglary. Officials say the motive for all of this mayhem is still not known. We can all guess, but the reality of this right now is its part of the investigation, looking into his background and interviewing other people. Even though it ended like this we cannot conclude our investigations without completing them. That includes the homicide, but also includes as determining what was the root cause of this. His father said his son suffered from Mental Illness and was not taking his medication. The three officers wounded yesterday are said to be in good condition.
