First stop tonight is fremont where a few hundred people took to the streets, it was a diverse gathering and it was peaceful and it ended before the curfew. We have the message from the protesters tonight. Reporter it was organized by a group of fremont residents who wanted to take the black lives Matter Movement to the quiet suburbs fremont. Hundreds of people gathered at Washington High School in fremont for another evening of protest, hours prior a Memorial Service was held in minneapolis for george floyd whose death sparked outrage across the country. The demonstration began around 4 30 wednesday, protesters poured out of the High School Want to Police Headquarters two miles away, this man brought his young children. Support and solidarity, things are wrong. We have to make a stand, we have to teach these kids right from wrong. Reporter the crowd representing the diverse makeup of the city. Theres a lot of unity in the community and we are all together and understand that there is injustice. Reporter many wore masks and helps whole held signs, the group chanted George Floyds name, demonstrators calling on racism to and, not lives. Some of the Group Listing demands and the relationship between the police and the school district, to defund the police and knots to take money from police organizations. At the police stations speakers quoted Martin Luther king jr. Making passionate pleas for change. I have been waiting my entire life for fremont to show up like this for humanity. And the protest was peaceful and other than road closures it did not cause much of a disruption, many parents fighting for future generations, one African American mother saying she wants her daughter to know her life matters. Another protester scheduled for saturday. Another large and diverse crowd and is that it is not used to hosting political protest, how this movement is also taking shape in the suburbs. Reporter organizers say they are proud of their peaceful demonstration, they marched a short distance from hernandez park to city hall. This march and protest was organized for College Students and had a turnout that would make a large city proud, by police estimate 1000 people attended. Quite frankly i have never seen anything like this here, i think this is very historic and very important. Reporter these protesters say it is a good place to show solidarity with others demanding justice for george floyd. Every city even the suburbs show their support and show that we dont stand for whats going on. Reporter demonstrators pounded the pavement and spoke words from their heart. We have been fighting for a long time. Reporter words about the struggles of the black community drew emotion, the city has seen its racial makeup change, census data shows that was predominantly white 20 years ago, not so in 2020. Be respectful, stand up for what you believe in and do not back down. Reporter organizers say there was apprehension by some in the community when they heard about the protest being held here. A lot of people thought we were going to come to terrorize the city and they want to believe that the movement is dangerous but its not, we are fighting the danger. Reporter the goal is to too forward they say other actions are needed to sustain their movement. Reporter organizers say they are pleasantly surprised by the large turnout, they say it shows the power of the movement for change. On the peninsula students organized a peaceful protest in Mountain View this afternoon, several hundred people left from wells fargo as el camino road and then mount marched to Mountain View city hall. Police stopped traffic and officers thanked the people in the crowd for wearing masks. Most cities and counties in the bay area allow their curfews to expire after protests remained largely to peaceful, there are now just three cities that have curfews in effect, fremont, vallejo and concorde have curfews that started at eight a clock tonight and will run until 5 00 tomorrow morning. Many counties have lifted s, th Sheriff Department says that hes made more than 120 arrests after the curfew monday night, but that number drops to about 30 on tuesday night. The Sheriff Department says the curfew can be used as an effective tool to help restore order. The curfew that went into effect, a lot of the Community Members went home, they follow the guidelines, that allowed us to focus on that element that was still out on the streets and traveling up and down to the different cities. Authorities say they dont want to issue another curfew but they also say that curfews are still on the table just in case they need to use them again. The San Francisco mayor announced a plan to shift funding from the Police Department to the cities black community. The mayor and supervisors say they will lead a collaborative process on how that process will work the average yearly income for a black family and the city is 31,000 compared to e supervisor said that repurposing some of the funding would help level the Playing Field for the black committee. In Minnesota Three of the former Police Officers involved in the arrest of george Floyd Merritt made their first Court Appearances today. Thomas lane and J Alexander King are now charged with aiding and abetting floyd says, the judge sent bail at 750,000 each. The Attorney Says that he had only been on the job for four days and he asked him twice to let him rollover. Family and friends during civil rights leaders and many of us today for a Memorial Service to honor floyd, the service was filled with tears, prayer and some very touching tributes. I loved my brother we had so many memories together. Reporter to some george floyd was a beloved sibling. He was always well and always made people feel like you were special and nobody felt left out. Reporter to others he was a role model. He would stand up for any injustice everywhere. Please say his name. Thank you all. Reporter but everyone in the sanctuary the loss of the man that they called the george, big floyd for his middle name, perry, felt like a death in the family. Everybody loved george. To many of us its a symbol of injustice and Police Brutality, but to those who knew him he was also a man who loves banana and mayonnaise sandwiches and lebron james and when he won his first nba championship floyd felt like he had won one as well. Hes just a real genuine person. Somebody i can count on no matter what. Reporter there were calls for justice. What we are doing is helping america be america for all americans. Its time for us to stand up and say get your knee off of our necks. Reporter but the most moving tribute came in every body in the audience stood still for eight minutes and 48 seconds, the amount of time that floyd was held down by police, to remember a man who can stand no longer. Its a long time. If we calculated that is how long he was laying there. Theres no excuse, they had enough time. They had a private family servi set for saturday that is where floyd was born, following that there will be a service on monday in houston, thats where floyd grew up joe biden is scheduled to speak there. Developing news in the south bay, San Jose Police say a person is under arrest in a string of suspicious fires that broke out this evening. The first fire was reported just before 6 pm in the fight for the ranch. They totaled about 80 acres and are now 20 contained. Evacuation orders have just lifted and investigators are interviewing the suspect it was discovered that these fires were intentionally set. There was a witness that saw a person letting these fires off San Jose Police detained the suspect and my understanding is the suspect is still being detained until an id can be confirmed. Reporter fortunately no injuries were reported, one year attack on the fire had to be grounded due to somebody flying a drone in the area. One person was hospitalized in Critical Condition tonight after being rescued from the surf at ocean beach in San Francisco, firefighters responded to a distress call for two swimmers before six a clock tonight, both ended up pulled from the water off the great highway, one of the swimmers is in stable condition, the other is in Critical Condition. The water off of ocean beach can be very inviting on warm days like today, but lifeguards say the surf and rip currents can be treacherous even for people who are very good swimmers. Reporter has communities try to heal and come together, standing up, speaking out and marching side byside, the fight for social justice is complicated by the need for social distancing. As long as i keep my mask on and try my best to keep a safe distance than im willing to take that chance. People of color wake up every day and take the chance of being murdered by police so i will take that chance with covid19. Im out here willing to risk my health and im turning 60 this year so that is a concern. But i think our democracy requires us to show up. Reporter after months of staying at home, crowded streets with thousands many with facemasks and coverings, many without is a worrying side to Health Officials and government leaders. Thursday the governor said the state is bracing for a possible second wave of covid19 cases. I imagine as we reopen in and through the process of the mixing thats come from the protests we will start to see that increase and we need to prepare for that. Health Officials Say the risk of transmission is especially high. When you are shouting or chanting or singing we are seeing more evidence that it can help project your droplets further and aerosolized. Reporter the Alameda County interim Health Officer says your gas and smoke from fires also increases the risk of coronavirus spreading. Anything that will make people cough or sneeze is going to protect droplets from your mouth. Reporter she urges everyone protesting to wear a mask, stay six feet away from others and watch for symptoms of covid19 in the coming weeks. Fever, muscle aches, loss of taste or smell and if you can, get tested at one of the Free Community testing sites. Certainly after this week likely in a week or two were going to see some evidence. If a protester test positive the Contact Tracing can be extremely challenging, they will try to identify those who are most at risk but she will consider a public announcement if it seems that there was wide exposure at one of these events. Safeway is being sued following a coronavirus outbreak at the Distribution Center in tracy, the widow filed the wrongful death lawsuit, he was a longtime worker inside from coronavirus. The lawsuit alleges systematic failures there, it claims that safeway conceal the outbreak, had employees working too close together and failed to implement Safety Measures soon enough. Back in april safeway released a statement saying that they are always were their top priority and temperature screenings, masks and Hand Sanitizer stations were available for employees. Classaction lawsuit was filed against Princess Cruise Lines accusing the company of gross negligence, the complaint says at least 100 passengers on board the grand princess to mexico tested positive for the virus and two of them eventually died.
