California School Superintendent tony thurman says that some of the issues raised by the george floyd case have their roots in the classroom. He wants to provide implicit bias training for teachers and educators across the state. New at 6, andre senior joint is now with what thurman said about the initiative today. Julie, the death of george floyd is once again the problematic issue of race in our country. To that end, thurman is working this evening to address racism in Public Education and not from the students but from the teachers. We are rolling out a campaign of sorts, a campaign to talk about implicit bias. California state superintendent tony thurman announcing a more urgent effort to address racial bias in the classroom through training for teachers and educators. Im banking on our ability to start the conversation about using education as a way of helping to build healing and understanding, to promote tolerance. Implicit bias refers to the attitudes or stereotypes that affect our understanding, actions and decisions in an unconscious manner. Herman says he is initiating conversations with educational leaders, parents and students about racial bias and how education can teach empathy and tolerance and build racial justice. Doctor gt, a professor says the perception of black men starts to take shape in schools. Implicit bias is based on the idea that we are not aware of whiteness as a norm. We as people have been so acclimatized into our society that the construct of whiteness is how to be, how to become, how to think, how to speak, what to do. He says teachers many times unknowingly reinforce institutional racism on black or brown students. That is the nature of implicit bias. I know there are other kids doing the exact same thing but i am targeting that black boy right there in that quarter who is doing something similar to these group of students who might not be a student of color. Indeed, that starts and can start as earl prekindergarten. We definitely see those disparities that early across the country. Doctor jason was behind this study when he was at stanford called two strikes, race and the disciplining of youth and students. It examined the school to prison pipeline and found large Racial Disparities and discipline towards black students. Not only are they more likely to be suspended than their peers but as you look at more suspensions and so more than one suspension, that disparity becomes even larger. In the aftermath of the death of george floyd, the work that we were talking about around implicit bias has come into painful focus about where we must go from here. In addition to disciplining studies show that black and brown students often are given unequal and inadequate educations, says his initiative will focus also on legislation and inequalities in schools as well especially were black and brown students are often pushed into the criminal Justice System and are expelled more often. Andre senior reporting tonight. Two of the bay areas largest demonstrations this week were organized by students and they both went off safely and without any destruction. I think it went well. I think i couldnt have asked for anything more. As long as everyone was safe and we were able to speak our truths. 19yearold xavier brown organized the oakland demonstration with another teenage friend. He graduated from Bishop High School and attends ucla. Brown says he had no idea that demonstration would be so large. He put the word out on social media just five days earlier. At first, it wasnt getting that much traction and i said even if it is just me and you, we will still march. He said were began to spread to various Community Organizations stressing that the demonstration would be what they called nondestructive. Oakland police did use tear gas to disperse crowds late that evening which has sparked criticism but the want and violence was absent. We wanted to give the community a voice and through that, a standing up against Police Brutality and the system of oppression in america. James taylor is a professor of politics at the university of San Francisco. I think that our young people should be commended. The discipline they are showing, the intelligence they are showing. Taylor says youre not surprised younger people are becoming involved. They are the next line up to be impacted by Law Enforcement. Even now as teens, they had disproportionate contact with Law Enforcement. Organizers say young people cannot bring change by themselves. I think it is up to all of us to fix it. Is we are all on this earth right now, we should all take part. Brown says he is considering organizing another protest but he hasnt set a date yet. Rob roth, ktvu, fox 2 news.
