Protests against george death has broken out across the country, including here in the bay area. Hundreds of people posttesting in oakland and san jose tonight. The demonstrations, at times, pretty violent. That outreach spreading across the country tonight. Thank you for joining us. And tonight, in oakland, protesters were out on the streets. Protesters were blocking the highway at 880. You can see in the video this is from the broadway exit. You can see here that people were on the freeway. At one point traffic had to come to a screeching halt because the protesters ran onto the freeway. Here is a live look from sky fox at the protest happening right now in oakland. We saw a short time ago someone set fire to something. It appears that other people who are a part of the demonstration put out that fire as well. You can see fire trucks on the scene. We are not clear what that was about. But we have learned multiple officers were hurt earlier tonight at seventh and broadway. Always say protesters were throwing projectiles. We have Live Team Coverage of whats been happening across the bay area. Jesse gary is and san jose were protests were spilling out onto the streets earlier today. But we begin with ktvus amber lee who is live in downtown with the latest on the protests tonight. Reporter protesters for the past few hours have been on the move. Now the crowd grew with each ju out Oakland Police. They told me they detained several people but did not say why. This demonstrated demonstration started just outside city hall. Around 6 30 friday evening, a diverse crowd of about 100 gathered outside franco bala plaza passing motorists honked in support, protesters see what happened to george floyd in minneapolis can happen to blackmon anywhere in this country. We are tired of explaining it , because nobody is listening. So now we are out here kicking up dust. Reporter some protesters say they came in support of the black and brown friends. We live on a world that judges you based on your complexion, not on your merit or character. Enough is enough. Reporter while protesters gathered, nearby merchants reporting up their businesses. This building on telegraph avenue housed seven commercial tenants, including a ground flo the owners tell me they wanted to protect their building after they saw a fire promoting the protest. It would be great if they sent a message. Reporter the chef here says these are hard times for businesses already because of the shelter in place order. Boarding up windows in anticipation of possible vandalism made sense. They are quite expensive to replace. We did it as an extra precaution. Reporter this Business Owner says she has been here 11 years and has never been vandalized. She says she empathizes with protesters and police. Im concerned for people who are out there and getting abused by the police. These are people who are here to protect us. And if you are not protecting us, then why are you here . I know there are good cops out there. Reporter at desk we saw police form a perimeter around the protesters as they block intersections along broadway. We just want our voices heard. I understand just before 9 00, at least 100 protesters got up on interstate 80 near broadway, in both directions. They were seen walking and blocking lanes of traffic. Now it appears that that roadway is clear at this point. Thank you for that report, we appreciate you on the ground tonight and bringing us the latest information in downtown oakland. We are going to san jose were the protest started earlier this afternoon. Tran once jesse gary is joining us with the latest. Reporter the streets of san jose still active with protesters and police. Santa clara street has been closed for most of the Late Afternoon and into the evening hours. The first blockages at sixth and santa clara, that extends all the way down santa clara street to about second and santa clara. You can see officers walking here behind me, along north Fourth Street headed south down towards san fernando and north Fourth Street. San fernando and south fourth. Apparently protesters are gathering their and so youre hearing their announcements from the San Jose Police department saying it is an unlawful demonstration and the need to disband. They also have a helicopter circling overhead saying pretty much the same thing. Is a very, very active night and it started earlier this afternoon. Days after the nation came together to honor its war day, america is at war with itself. Friday downtown san jose became a skirmish line between people protesting the death of george floyd and police determined to keep the peace. There was and hasnt been no justice. We have been peaceful and there has been nothing for us its time to shake up the country in the world and show them that black lives matter. Reporter demonstrators initially gathered downtown midafternoon and made their way to highway 101. Once there, they block the southbound lanes and some of vandalized motorized vehicles. Chp officers responded after the demonstration turned violent. At least one San Jose Police officer was injured in the confrontation, but his injuries are serious. Chp officers eventually move the group off the freeway and pack onto east santa clara street. Isaiah group of kids that were trying to do something peaceful. And then people that had no peaceful intent. There was obviously a separation of the two. They couldve went around that group and maybe got there if thats what they wanted to do. But they wanted to push everybody. Reporter anger and frustration boiled over when one demonstrator was arrested. Several people responded by throwing rocks, bottles and other items at officers. That prompted police use of tear gas to disperse the crowd. Officers then moved in masks, pushing demonstrators from north fifth and santa clara to north second and santa clara. The last thing we wanted to do was use force. I myself got hit by a rock. Some officers were taking rocks and bottles took a very volatile situation. Understandably so, we get the global picture. At the same time in order to keep the peace we are trying to disperse the crowds. Reporter Police Officers aided by Santa Clara County deputies continued moving demonstrators down santa clara street until most had left. The venting left two fires and vandalized vehicles and an unquenchable thirst for justice. San jose police are right now firing tear gas canisters in the area of south Fourth Street in san fernando street. Because south fourth and san fernando is the new area where police are engaged with protesters. We will have an update for you coming up at 11 00. Jesse, we appreciate your reporting from the field. We know you were there earlier when teargas was dispersed and you got caught in the middle of that. Please stay safe and will check in with you a bit. We want to move forward to the inneapolis Police Officer Derek Chauvin was seen kneeling on George Floyds neck. He was arrested and charged in his death today. Here is is mug shot, 48year old Derek Chauvin. He is now facing charges of thirddegree murder and manslaughter. According to the complaint, Derek Chauvin ignored at least one officer who wanted to roll them onto his side so he could breathe. The three other officers were also fired we are told more charges could be coming, obviously they are still under investigation. We have just learned that the pentagon has taken the rare step of putting military police on alert to go to a battle minneapolis. Minneapolis has been rocked by violent demonstrations in the nights following floyds death. Tonight is no different. The city ordering a curfew, eight p. M. Curfew tonight and through the weekend. But that has not stopped protesters from marching throughout the city and setting cars and buildings on fire. This just some of the video happening in the city right now. Right now protesters also vandalizing bus stops and turned on local news outlets too. One reporter and Photographer Team was pushed out of the area by demonstrators. We will have a live report from minneapolis a little later in this newscast. Lets get back to the protests happening in oakland right now with these pictures from sky fox that weve been covering for the last hour or so. We have been on the air on ktvu plus. Heres the oakland area around the seventh and broadway area where the oakland Police Department is located. Some Police Holding the line pretty steady to keep the people at the intersection from advancing toward the Police Department. But we did see some instances where police have fired tear gas at the crowd to disperse the crowd. They have also declared this an unlawful gathering. So they wind the people in the crowd to simply disperse at this point. At this point multiple officers are injured by projectiles. Something we also saw an san jose earlier today, police in those cases used teargas firing back into the crowd. So these are pictures, again, of the demonstrations. Thousands of people. It looked like a much bigger one that took place down south earlier today. With awesome fires, one close to the bus stop that seemed to be a garbage can at the time. And we also saw demonstrators that came in to help stop what was on fire at the time. Again, as we look at these pictures you see people running down by jackson street as you turn on the seventh heading for the broadway area. This is earlier tonight when the demonstrations were going on 880. Made their way down the jackson street exit up underneath the edd overpass and onto seventh street where they headed down and participated in demonstrations earlier on this evening when we were following this. Yeah, thats exactly right. I will save these images now give a better description of the crowd we have been seeing. Because clearly at least 1000 people that were out on the streets of oakland, at this point it appears theyve dispersed into different groups and they are walking into different portions. From these live images we have seen at Oakland City Hall people are still gathering at that point. I dont know if you recall just a few moments ago, they were over the franco yellow plaza area catty corner to the city hall is a chase bank. There were a lot of fireworks being sent off at that location. You can see this is near the tribune building. If you are familiar with doubt on the, the iconic tribune building has people protesting on the streets and walking through that area. We have not been able to see any damage to buildings as of yet. Keeping mind our Vantage Point is coming from a helicopter. We are not quite sure whats going on on the ground. We are aware some arrest has been made in some officers may have been hurt. We are joined by the former police chief on the phone right now to give us some perspective and what offices are dealing with these very maiden men and women she let for several years and oakland. Thank you so much for joining us. First of all, give me your thoughts on what youre seeing here tonight, based on these protests for george floyd, floyds death. First of all i think the oakland Police Department was probably the best in the country in dealing with this type of issue. They are definitely working on a strategy, which is to be sure that the community is able to have their voices heard. And so they are going to give them as much room and lateral strategy of being able to accomplish that goal, that they can protest safely, but without any disruption of property or violence against one another. Former chief kirkpatrick, i appreciate you joining us, because this was a city that you oversaw for a couple of years here and you are very close, from we have told us, in meeting the reforms of Police Brutality and injustice, meeting the reforms the federal monitor had imposed on the city of oakland. What can you say about the changes that have been made . And what the department was operating under right now, as you see these protests unfold tonight. Yes, no doubt that they are right at the conclusion of reform again. The most number one in the country particularly , one of the most experienced Police Departments in the country of dealing with protests of this nature. It was in my opinion that they definitely are at this stage, not about true reform. Something you had heavily focused on when you are leading the department as the police chief. Just really quickly, the placed varmints of the south that they are investigating a shooting of two security guards. This happened in the area of 12 and clay. We just wanted to bring this information to you because all of the things Oakland Police are doing with you right now. I wanted to ask you, you saw the Police Officers around seventh and broadway kind of holding the line in front of the Police Department. You described to us a little bit about the process and why that was. He seemed to be very structured and holding that line. Talk to us about that. Right, they basically are holding that line strictly to keep the protesters from getting up on the interstate. And so they are excellent in their strategies to make sure the rest of the city, as he referenced there have been some shootings in another part of the city, they are going to be prepared to handle the calls for service in the other parts of the city. They will also rely on surrounding police forces. But they are tactically trying to hold the crowd from spilling over into onto the interstate. Can you give a message to the public here. I know you are no longer part of the city of oakland in terms of sending out a message to its residents. But you were a part of this community for several years and i would like to know your thoughts are and give us your perspective on the message you would send tonight for people who are out protesting and what you will think of these demonstrations. I think and i had said that during most of my tenure as i have the honor of being the chief of police of oakland. Oakland is known nationally as being a city of protest. There is a big difference between protest, which is a wonderful, fundamental structure of our american democracy. To have our voices heard, to have the pain and despair brought the communication. The rage, the hurt, they need to be heard. But you cannot also destroy property or another. I think oakland could stand up and show the rest of the country what it is to do an effective protest. The Police Department is going to support you in that and protect you. Dont let it move. I believe in Martin Luther king jr. Is one of and we need to follow the spirit of what Martin Luther king jr. Did in advocating for without violence. Those are important topics to discuss when we try to abridge a divided community. Is a large crowd gathered in the area at 14th and bradley. Obviously youve been showing me those pictures. Vehicle traffic is advised to avoid the downtown traffic between i880 and i980. And west grand. That particular area, avoid going to the area for i know because police have a lot to do with these demonstrators out there. I do want to ask you, one of the things things here and this is something thats for the Law Enforcement folks that i talk to, is the outreach you are doing to the community. A distrust arlier about some of of police among many communities. What had the Police Department been doing as you were there as part of your Outreach Program to the community . Im glad you brought this up , because i want to underscore something. We have talked a lot about the need for reform. And reform is very, very important. But i believe that under oaklands federal oversight and federal monitoring, as well as attorneys, this idea that you are going to reform a culture by doing new policies, you have totally missed the point. Policies are important, we need to have new policies. You will never change the cultural mindset of a Police Officer, like we have seen no with it being manifested in minnesota. That is not a result of just throwing another policy on the books. And that is why the reform that is going on, these Reform Efforts by the current federal overseer is, has totally missed the mark. It had become an adulterous process of what true reform is, what american policing means is cultural transformation. And you cannot change the heart and the mind of a culture with the policy. And i do think that we have missed the mark sorely. In the city of oakland, with what is going on here . 17 years of federal oversightan to stop immediately and you need leadership that can lead cultural transformation. Which i believe i was doing. As well as many of the other chiefs prior to me. Officers will act differently, they will behave differently, they will think differently when they think their leadership is legitimate. And right now you cant run a Police Department when officers do not believe in the federal monitoring anymore. They dont believe in what they are seeing in the City Government of oakland. We appreciate your time and your perspective on this you for joining us and giving us some insight here. The former police chief for the city of oakland. Thank you. As we told you earlier in this newscast, the pentagon has but the military on alert to the violent protests in minneapolis and protest continue their tonight even though there is a curfew. Fox news Garrett Tenney joins us live with the latest on the situation in minneapolis. We understand what the pentagon has done is particularly rare. Can you tell us little bit more about that . Why its rare and why the pentagon might be doing that information . I can tell you that folks here on the ground are calling for more help, saying more needs to be done, whether
