Coming up, a look at the latest numbers as 25 of the california workforce is without a job. The president takes on social media over what he calls political censorship. Coming up the experts we talk to are split on whether or not this is a good idea. A significant cool down, temperatures have really dropped off, fogg is back at the coast, youre going be surprised at how cool it gets this weekend. We will see you back here with the forecast. All it took was a couple of fact checks on tweets and now President Donald Trump has signed an executive order that limits Legal Protections for social media companies. Experts believe that this has no legal teeth but others say it opens the door for important discussion. Reporter trump says is the big day for social media and fairness. Experts say the executive order raises a big question about who decides what is fair and what is not. With an executive order President Donald Trump took aim at twitter, facebook , and other social media giants, undercutting the Legal Protections they have long enjoyed. After some of his tweets were slapped with the fact check label. s like what they choose to promote is nothing more than political activism. Reporter he is targeting a section of the Communications Decency act. The motive is to crackdown on censorship. I find executive order to protect and uphold the free speech and rights of the american people. Reporter a text expert says it is complicated. A local professor applauds the president s actions instead of the conversation needs to happen. The look at these things and the president is calling out real issues , there is no argument. To what degree can the company make singlehanded decisions . Reporter there are limits to what trump can do but theres a lot of wind, fury , and noise. I doubt that anything substantial of will come from this. Reporter twitter said that they will continue to use the fact check label to show information and disputes of the people can judge for themselves. Mark zuckerberg said that the president s approach is not right. The government choosing to censor a platform because they are worried about censorship does not strike me as the right reflex. Reporter the president says he expects legal challenges and will expect congress to weigh in. Ann rubin life for us tonight. Joining us to talk more about this is the constitutional expert david levine. The president says he is cracking down on censorship and is trying to defend free speech from one of the gravest dangers that they have faced in american history. Does have a point . Its exactly the wrong way to go about this. An executive order is not the right way to make change. For 25 years weve had the Communications Decency act , and there is special immunity for social media platforms. There is room for legitimate debate as to whether they should have that immunity. And that is fair. Given that we have a statute, the president cannot use executive order to overturn a statute. The other issue if were talking about censorship, the president does not like criticism. If the media platform like twitter and facebook would become responsible for the content they would be faster to knock things out like the false and misleading things that the president has said about drugs. With respect to his accusing us a talk show host of murder when he was a congressman those things would disappear so fast they would be dangerous for the platform. This is opposite of what the president wants which is free speech. Inspection there be more liability some people think they are biased against conservatives. But there is a case to be made when there is defamation put up that that something that we should not allow social media groups to leave there and it would be their responsibility within a certain period of time to take that down or we could say that they have adopted that position and then they are subject to a lawsuit. There could be areas in congress where we might want to change that statute. The second question about the censorship. These private companies do not have to worry about censorship. They can do what they want. Just as a newspaper can pick and choose what to put in there. You have to look at the aggregate. Live in of conservatives said heres something in facebook and hear something in twitter when you look at the aggregate the bright parts of the world, where conservatives have opportunities to speak you cannot say they dont have platforms. The president has the biggest of all. Twitter said they will continue with their fact checks that they want people to check for misinformation. Is there anything wrong with that . Absolutely not. That is their right , and a lot of people think they should be doing more of that. A lot of these companies have policies that give somebody the power that they abuse their power that they could lose their accounts. Theres people that say why can President Donald Trump continue to use the twitter with so many unfounded allegations . For twitter to do something as simple as putting a link to say theres another set of facts or another point of view before you reach for your bleach you might want to think before you do that. I dont think theres anything wrong with that. Thats only for the good. But how do you see it playing out . We will see a lawsuit against executive order. And i assume it will be knocked out. And the answer will be President Donald Trump use your persuasive powers with congress. Thats the place to debate and make a change in david we appreciate you talking with us thank you for your comments. We have the clouds out there, plenty of fog that really dropped the temperatures.
