The first coronavirus case confirmed in new york city at the beginning of march. Since that time, the number of cases has skyrocketed. How challenging has the pass to two months in for you professionally and personally . I think they have been absolutely the most challenging part of my aspect of my career. When you add on top of that the emotional strain that both work and being without my family i think, for most of it, really just amplified it. Ive never seen anything like this. Ive never been a part of anything like this and it really has been something to behold. At your hospital, how is the situation in terms of the caseload . Are you still overwhelmed with coronavirus patients . Or is it a manageable level now x well i think we have passed a little bit of the overwhelming phase. But it still is extremely serious. There are still lots of patients both in the hospital and hospitals throughout the city. I would not say we are over this. But it perhaps could be plateauing at this point in terms of volume, absolutely. What have you learned from a medical standpoint about the best way to treat coronavirus patients . If you like from the medical community, this has been a learn as you go process here. Trying to understand this novel coronavirus. What have you learned is the best way to help people with covid19 . I think that without getting into specifics, honestly, the best way to treat this is this multidisciplinary approach with members from every aspect of medicine coming together. From infectious disease, intensive care medicine, every single specialty came together to treat this. I think that is what is necessary to treat something that is in essence, novel. Its something weve never seen. And i think we are still learning. As you look back on the past couple of months. Are there any stories that stick in your mind . Patients youve treated, people youve interacted with at the hospital that, interactions you will never forget . Absolutely. New york is kind of a big little city. When you are into contact with the patient who i did have a previously had known. And knew their family and thats really kind of jarring to see. My story is similar to a lot of medical personnel. Everybody, unfortunately, in new york new somebody or had at least a Second Degree connection to somebody who got sick at various levels of illness. It did touch everybody and it lasts, it will leave a certainly very long lasting impression in all of us. No doubt about it. As you point out, far from over. Especially their new york city. Homeless People Living in vehicles in san diego are hoping that a fefrom enforcement during the outbreak. Joining me now seni you are seeking a temporary restraining order, explain why. There are hundreds of people that live in the city of san diego have no option for shelter or housing other than the vehicles that they live in. Despite the shelter in place order, the city continues to enforce laws that make living in your vehicle a crime. They are threatening arrests, citing people, issuing tickets and towing and impounding vehicles that people need to follow the shelter in place order. We are asking the judge to stop the city from doing that so everyone can remain safe. Do you know how often thats happening . The enforcement . Enforcement has happened routinely since the vehicle habitation ordinance was enacted about one parking ordinance that makes it illegal to park in and rv. It will allow people to access handwashing and remain physical distancing. They have been forcing that since 2012. These are laws were people end up in jail, with to tickets and without their option for shelter. The enforcement continues to happen despite the covid19 pandemic. Talk more about the role these vehicles play. If they are able to maintain social distancing. If they dont have the vehicle. Most vehicles are not optimal shelter. Being should be housing and the cost of housin san diego is more than most people can afford. So the lawsuit is brought on behalf of 11 named plaintiffs. We represent a class of people, most of whom have disabilities and rely on disability income, which is less than what it costs to rent and efficiency in the city of san diego. Is so the vehicles are it in terms of available, private shelter. There is no other private option. Its a safer option than congregant shelters or living outside on the street. Im wondering what san diego officials have to say about this . Have they explained why they have this policy and why they believe its important to continue to enforce it especially now with the outbreak . We havent heard any justification for enforcing during the covid19 outbreak. We would think it was hard pressed to come up with that justification given that cdc guidance states we should not be breaking up encampments while people are faced with the covid 19 pandemic. Unless they have dad, im scared. Private Housing Options its only human to care for those we love. Available to them. What historically the city has relied on to justify and also help light their way. Enforcement ironically, are Public Health laws. Here enforcement directly threatens Public Health. Its why last year chevron invested over 10 billion to bring affordable, reliable, ever cleaner energy to america. That justification to the extent that it was ever true, certainly is not true now. We will continue to follow the progress of the lawsuit and see if a federal court grants the restraining order. Inc. You i appreciate your time. Thank you very much, heather. Up next. Of former Vice President joe biden, speaks out for the first time denying the Sexual Assault allegation made against him. Will some are calling for further investigation. That could mean education for little man and a closer bus stop for her. relieved, loving hey. Hey. Shape your future. He census at 2020census. Gov. There is outreach growing over the release of the Sexual Assault suspect from jail. The defendant is accused of decadesold attacks in the east bay. The judge in this case, agreed to free him because of concerns over the coronavirus. 61yearold gregory stands accused of sexually assaulting two women decades ago but now hes a free man after his bill went from 2 1 2 Million Dollars to zero. We vehemently argued against his release and lowering the bail to zero. He was arrested last fall, 22 years after he attacked two women. Its outrageous that this man is charged with serious, violent Sexual Assault, to be released in custody at this time. This is not normal or acceptable. Instead of sitting in the jail hes under arrest to on an ankle monitor. We have members of the agency that have families right around the corner from this people are concerned. The defendant has nothing to do with the zero bail schedule which allows nonviolent people to be released because of the coronavirus. His age and previous heart problems is the reason he could be sis up double. s attorney said in light of the covid19 pandemic and this mans personal medical circumstances, i argued his bail be reviewed. This is pursuant it a longstanding rule if the bail can be reglued if theres a change in circumstances when the bail was set. Covid19 was the change. He is accused of a sexually assaulting of woman in the bart station in 1997. A few days later someone in the high school. Union city police were so upset by the police they publicly identified Thomas Riordan as the judge who released him. The judge did not respond to the request for comment. To his custody status will be revisited next month. We will talk more about this case, we are joined by legal analyst michael cardoza. What criteria, what fact is to think the judge in this case was wayne the most here when they decided to release this inmate whose accused of violent Sexual Assaults . Im not being flippant when im saying im not sure where the judge was thinking when he did this. It seems the underlying factors, covid19, that this man is 61 years old and has heart problems and might be susceptible to covid19. The sheriff can make accommodations for him. They can put him in isolation. They can put him places where hes not exposed to other inmates in jail. There are ways to remedy that concern. Under the suggestion of no bail, its not from serious or violent felonies like this one. Right. It just to clarify, this decision here has nothing to do with the recommendation that we heard a couple weeks back from the Judicial Council of california that said zero bail for misdemeanors and lower levels felonies. This was an under on the not related that the judge made the decision. You are to give no bail for violent felons is not the case. What im afraid of in a case like this, remember back to brock turner and judge persky over in santa clara county, where he got voted out of office. He was a very conservative judge. Im telling you, judge riordan is an exda, very conservative and very Law Enforcement oriented and im afraid people will go after him and try to get him off the bench. That will be a horrible mistake. In my opinion did the judge make a mistake here . Yes. But you got a look at his work hes been on the bench over 20 years. This is a good judge who in my opinion, made a mistake in this case. A dont make him pay the price for that. He made a decision and most of us dont agree with it but so be it. We should point out here. There is been a lot of inmates release, almost 900 inmates have been let out of the jail during the out break here. Generally speaking, most of the folks accused of serious Violent Crimes are continued to be held in the jail. Absolutely you are spot on. Which begs the question, judge riordan, as conservative as you are and an exdistrict attorney, what were you thinking when you did this . I cant help it thank wait a minute, put in asko bracelet on him, send him home and tell him to stay home. Can you imagine hes got from what i understand, to two daughters and a wife. Thats got to be a hack the circumstance. Wait a minute honey, what are you charged with . Sexually assaulting five charges against to two different women back in 1997. Thats insane to me you send him home why . What would you think alex . Im gonna ask you to sort of look to the future here. Obviously the release of this particular defendant is only temporary. As you said he is under house arrest, but ankle monitor is on him. The judge will return to the case and review the release next month. Could you see the judge doing a 180 . I actually do if he comes back to court. What would you all be thinking . You are facing these charges. You are thinking about running and not coming back. If it is convict did, its the rest of his life in jail. Common sense tells you, heres a guy that is thinking about getting out of town and staying out of town so he doesnt have to face this. I would imagine the sheriffs or local Police Department have ice on him in case he does run. This makes no sense to me, especially as ive said, judge riordan is a conservative is good judge. What were you thinking . Why did you let this guy out . He will run given the opportunity, who wouldnt, based on we will review the case next month. We will leave it there. Our legal analyst always good to have you on. Have a good weekend. Thank you stay healthy. During a televised interview, former Vice President , joe biden adamantly denied ever sexually assaulting a former staffer. Of the democratic president ial candidates remarks are being met with mixed reaction. We have more on that. Reporter it never happened, it never happened. In his first public remarks regarding the accusation of Sexual Assault by his former senate staffer, joe biden denied this took place. She has a right to say what ever she wants to say but i have a right to say look at the factsit out. I believe the claims and the Vice President calling for an investigation into any records that may exist is a right thing to do. How else are you adjusting . How do you go about teaching Something Like this online . What were looking at is smaller classes and making sure the kids have an opportunity to explore their own creativity. Using those amazing imaginations, kids can do so much if you let them. Have that imagination explode. We are doing fun and crazy classes and testing out different kinds of curriculum. For instance we are doing one class called shark problem which is a onehour class all about doing improvs about sharks because why not . That sounds fun. It certainly is and you guys are having to be rather creative in all of this. Before he let you go, talk a little bit about how this has impacted the theater. And its forced you to look at things in a completely different way. The theater industry as a whole is really struggling. We rely on gathering. Thats the heart and core of what we do. There is an incredible moment where the whole community is gathered together. I am on slap channels and zoom calls with artists all over the bay area and all over the country on a daily basis right now. Where we are pulling resources, talking to each other, figuring out what is the best way for us to move theater forward. Young people need imagination in their life and creativity. We are programmed for stories. So how can we best bring that to our community right now when gathering is not an option . And perhaps kids need it more now than ever before. We wish you a lot of success, nina, thank you for coming on the show. Appreciate it. Thank you so much. Wonderful way to keep connecting with the kids. We will shift gears and talk about a cooler weekend forecast right mark . Thats right, we will start out cloudy. A saturday morning mostly cloudy skies and areas of fog. You can see the front approaching our coastline this afternoon. Right now we have mostly clear skies over the portion of the bay area. We are checking in on the numbers for the 4 00 our. Most areas in the 60s and 70s. Throughout the forecast we will not talk about any heat at ala speeds. Stronger winds gusting over 20 miles per hour. Its a reoccurring theme each and every afternoon as winds pick up. It will accelerate in sfo right now wind gusts approaching 30 miles per hour. The rain forecast model. A notice right him the coast in yreka an inch of rain fall. Saturday a chance of sprinkle or light shower. The best chance in the north bay especially in the Sonoma County and ukiah and fort willis. Even a place like San Francisco you could have some miss or drizzles in the central portion of the day. We will take the forecast model into saturday. And lots of clouds out there. Of theirs the rain and it falls apart. If it moves in it can generate a sprinkler light shower across the bay area. The better chance will be up in north bay. Sunday we will clear things up in the afternoon hours and partly cloudy skies in the afternoon. Forecast tomorrow mainly in the 60s to low to mid 70s. We continue to cool things off and temperatures come down for your fiveday forecast on sunday. Early next week we warmup the numbers by monday or tuesday. Is no major heat in the forecast.
