We told you how many food banks and local organizations have strained to fill the need. Under this new program, restaurants will be reimbursed for providing three meals a day, seven days a week. A deadly coronavirus outbreak at a redwood city nursing home has now expanded in the leaving at least 10 residence at that facility dead. And dozens of others have tested positive for the virus. Henry lee joins us now, live with more on the situation there. Reporter i reported just to death at this facility last week, now this location is the latest area facility trying to contain a deadly outbreak of covid19. At least 10 residents have died after testing positive for the coronavirus at gordon manor in redwood city, including former stanford president , donald kennedy. He was in my tai chi class. Reporter the director had kennedy and her tai chi class at the assisted living facility. I met him for the first time when he came to gordon manor. And it was a privilege, for sure, but also a pleasure. Reporter at least 20 residents and seven employees have been infected with covid 19 at the assisted living facility. Loved ones are unable to visit the sick. It has been a really hard to weeks, or three weeks, or month. That we have been under lockdown, and my main concern is for my residence. And, you know, they are my friends. Reporter despite anguishing devastation, she said that there are glimmers of hope and positivity at the family run business whose tagline is just like family. We are able to have these little moments, even if it is complete devastation around us. It is like an island, there is a big tornado swirling around us. Reporter across the bay in oakland at least three residents have died at excel Healthcare Center on high street, at least are infected. Excel has a history of Violations Including in december when inspectors set the facility failed to follow a Doctors Orders for oxygen and ministration. Longterm care advocates say that they are almost certainly more cases at Nursing Homes than have yet to be publicized. It is not a surprise. To the iceberg is right. The reported numbers are likely just a fraction of the real number of cases that are already out there. Reporter he says that information can be scattershot. Some counties have declined to provide information come instead referring to a state database that does not offer specific numbers. The data being collected is selfreported, the facilities have to volunteer the information to state and county authorities and they dont want to because it is bad for business. Reporter both facilities say they are working with local and state officials in hopes of stabilizing their communities. Reporting live, henry lee, ktvu fox 2 fox 2 news. As napa county looks to ease some of the stayathome restrictions, officials there are now ramping up free testing for people in the county. It is all in an effort to keep residents safe as they work to reopen the economy there in that north bay county. Tom is live with more on this Testing Program and also, whom it will benefit most. Reporter it will benefit a lot and may be more, because this is the kind of testing, this is the kind of be ramped up, in nampa, it should be ramped up everywhere. Nampa county expanded free drivein covid19 testing on friday, at the county fairgrounds. We need to be able to get a better idea of the prevalence of disease in our county, and we also need to be able to identify contacts. Reporter those with symptoms such as fever, cough, or shortness of breath have priority and will be able to schedule a test online. Asymptomatic First Responders, those who work in a healthcare facility, or work in a jail, are also eligible for testing. Healthcare worker rosalina got tested today, so that she never gives or receives an infection. I have my parents still, thank god, and i have a granddaughter, she is amazing and i want to come home to and i want to know that i am negative. Reporter another key goal is to expand free testing to the countys farmworkers, and their families. We will be taking the test to them as well, so they are out working in the vineyards right now, and working very hard, and we need to make sure that they have the opportunity for testing. Reporter low to moderate residents who do test positive and therefore need to be quarantined, can ask for financial help. In fact, they are invited to ask from the Nampa Community fund. Tom baker, ktvu fox 2 news. Lets talk more now about these new measures in nampa county, with mark devoe, he is a former fema president ial appointee. And mark, napa county really is trying to set out this path, to get it self to come you know, get it self back economically to reopen more businesses. Certainly, and we see that over and galenas, two, where they have tried to test the entire population. People have to remember that this is a tool to be used by those folks making a decision, went to open up the state, you know, it is to identify those pockets of areas wherd isolate, and quarantine those folks, so that we can open up the rest of the he end result. We will be following what happens there as well as and galenas. I want to talk about now this first in the Nation Program that we mentioned at the top of the show, this Program Designed to give needy seniors meals, this is really extraordinary. It certainly is. You will see this program grow throughout the nation but what is so interesting about it for us here, because it is first in the nation, it is local, certainly, but that partnership between the Fema Administration here on the west coast, and the governor and their staffs, coming together, are what actually created this, and the former administrator came from the obama administrator, last week, we saw on the National News magazine, a former head of fema, and how encouraging it is and encourage people to roll it out, so now we are certainly going to fill a need for those areas for the seniors that we were talking about earlier in todays newscast. It certainly will fill that void. Do you know if fema has ever done anything like this before . No. This is a first. It is historic. They deftly provide meals, you know, they are just packaged meals and water and things of that nature, but certainly, they have not gone to the extreme of being able to roll out a program like this in partnerships with the counties and the city, and what is unique about it and encouraging is that not only are you feeding the seniors who are most vulnerable, they are usually sheltered in, in the lower poverty bracket and they are not able to get meals because Community Centers are shut down. But what is great about it is it rkers. So it seems to be a winwin all the way across the board. It certainly does, getting those restaurant employees back to work, fema picking up 75 of the cost. And i think i heard the governor say that it is an estimated, estimated that 1. 2 million seniors live alone, so there is in fact a huge, huge void that needs to be filled here. Well said, absolutely. And the difficult part is that the virus is affecting communities of color and the lower social economic group, which this is the bracket that we are talking about, our seniors, many of them live alone, and so to be able to have this type of service isnt just meals, but it is also some interaction for them when they sorely needed from the Mental Health stand it. First in the nation but something that obviously, if successful here, could go ahead and he played out in other states. Always a pleasure. Thank you. Up next, bay area doctors and nurses heading to the front lines to help those in need during this crisis, and coming up we talk live with a doctor and a nurse were helping covid 19 patients and Navajo Nation. President trump signed it in a midday ceremony friday. Now congress is looking to the next potential aid package, Democratic Leaders want money for state and local governments but many republicans want the focus to stay on private businesses. We will address the need of our heroes, our Healthcare Workers, our police and fire, our transportation workers and the rest, who are on the payroll of our state and local government. Any future package has a focus on getting people rehired, supporting the payrolls of business so that workers can get their jobs back and can have their wages covered and get back to work. Reporter it is unclear how long this cash infusion will last but any new aid bill will have to wait a while. Congress is not scheduled to come back to dc until may 4 at the earliest. This week, a team of 14 nurses and doctors traveled to Navajo Nation in arizona and new mexico, to provide Critical Healthcare support for covid19 patients. Joining us now to tell us more about this effort is. It is really good to have you on here, i know you and your colleagues will be there for the next month, helping out with the effort to treat coronavirus patients in the Navajo Nation. What are you seeing on the ground, tell us exactly where you are and what the situation is and how you are helping out. Thanks, thank you for having me. So we are a team of 14 nurses and seven doctors and as a founder of the Heel Initiative which is a Global Health program that works in underserved communities and builds up professionals are trying to serve the underserved, we have been working in Navajo Nation for the last five years and with our partner sites in chinle, and arizona and shiprock, in new mexico, and gallup, which is a border town of Navajo Nation, we got calls from our partners that the covid, covid 19 pandemic is starting to search, and in homeless shelters, and we have facilities, they westting to see outbreaks and they were trying to place el rooms, as we deal with the search and their Emergency Rooms and so, they were calling us and saying we really need nurses on the ground, we need emergency room nurses, Critical Care nurses, and some icu doctors and er doctors and because we have those partnerships, we spoke to the Navajo Nation government and our partner sites and we are able to come in the last 10 days, be able to bring this team. We know from the reporting of the Navajo Nation has one of the highest infection rate for the coronavirus in the entire country, right behind new york and new jersey. What are some of the factors for that high infection rate, and what are the big challenges to try to treat and isole yeah, i think those of us who work in the Health System know that, you know, the vulnerability of certain types of populations, i think the person that was on before talked about the Elderly Population and we know that africanamericans, latinos, native americans, are hit quite hard by the coronavirus because they are vulnerable to begin with and so you have, in Navajo Nation, underfunded, Health System come you know, tribal treaties that have not been held up over the years so you have really a resource denied community that is vulnerable and has difficulty isolating in place, you know, they have high blood pressure, diabetes, and tuberculosis that is much higher than the National Average and you have, you have communities where they live in close quarters because they have such a strong community, but in the case of coronavirus, those strong, multigeneration families in close quarters, obvious the, has significant consequences. And not to mention, you know, i think there is, 30 of the population doesnt have Running Water thomas so that is also a difficulty that makes it hard to follow some of the guidelines that we talk about. Well, it is really tremendous that you and your colleagues are all there, i know youre going to be on the ground there in arizona and new mexico, with members of the Navajo Nation, helping them to get through this crisis for the next month here. At the least. So we appreciate what you are doing, we applaud the effort. Best of luck to you and your team. Thank you for having me. A beautiful bay area friday. Very warm, though.
