Public transit systems nationally have seen great reductions in ridership but transportation planners are already planning onramping service back up when more workers are allowed to return. Agencies have challenges with how to prevent people from getting too close together. As far as planners, they have multiple levels of challenges ahead of them, because its hard to predict how many people will come back on mass transit and how quickly they will come back. So figuring out how many operators and how much equipment they need will be the first challenge. And it could be difficult for systems to get back in the black after weeks of not collecting fares. The bigger problem is how theyre going to pay for everything, because most transit in california runs on a combination of income from their boxes and sales tax. With no riders, theres no fare box. With the economy on shutdown, the sales tax is greatly reduced. Planners say they expect people to come back and ride transit because many have no choice. It may take a while. Thank you.
