Its going to be really cool for us. Highs will only be in the 50s for some. Santa rosa, san jose both saying some light rain and very cold pattern for this time of year. For mid march, its a cold pattern. Afternoon highs will be in the 50s. I think tomorrows a better opportunity but its still in the mix for today and already were starting to see some scattered showers develop. There could be a general area of rain. Even a little bit around san jose, los gatos, Santa Cruz Mountains. This is some pretty cold air coming in the next couple of days. Highs will be well below average here. Were getting it in march you guys. All right. Thank you, steve. Governor newsom says california needs 20,000 hospital beds in case the coronavirus hits midway projection. California will need many more beds if things get worse. Right now we have 78,000 hospital beds. The doctors worry that may not be enough. Meantime, the governor is shutting down parking lots of state parks and beaches. He wants to cut down the number of people going to those parks and beaches breaking the social distance rules. Right now, california has more than 2,200 people unfected with the coronavirus. One of the five people who tested positive for the coronavirus at a peninsula assisted living facility has died z. San Mateo County Health is at atria burlingame to maintain the safety of residents still living there. Two workers at laguna in a hospital residence in San Francisco have tested positive for the virus. We want to take a look at the outbreak county by county within our region. Santa clara has the most. 321 cases followed by San Mateo County at 140 to. Here are some of the other numbers, counties within our region. You can take a look there. Santa cruz 22 cases. Mendocino has one case. No cases in lake county. Santa claras Convention Centers being temporarily transformed into a federal medical station to reduce the demand on hospital beds during the coronavirus pandemic. 250 beds will be set up inside the Convention Center to treat people who have medical problems but dont have the coronavirus. It would be bringing in the beds, the pharmaceutical need, oxygen, stuff like that. Things that we would need to care for 250 people for a short Term Duration of care. The Santa Clara County Convention Center is one of eight federal medical stations being set up here in california. Santa clara county supervisors will consider relief funding for groups that provide local services. The board wans to help communitybased and non profit organizations that are working to help homeless people. The county has received several large donations to help those groups. The board also announced its meeting by tell conference. Also today, San Franciscos board of supervisors will discuss using hotel rooms to house the corona emergency. Ancisco is already negotiating for more than 8,000 hotel rooms in the city to be used for emergency purposes. The rooms would be set aside for people who cannot self isolate including those in communal living situations. They can also be used by medical workers and first responders. And the Hayward City Council is meeting tonight and could decide to put a moratorium on tenant evictions. The 90day moratorium would apply to people who cannot pay their rent. The council will also discuss delaying a minimum wage increase that was supposed to go into effect on march 1st. All right. Our time is 4 35. The Hayward Fire Department now offering free coronavirus tests today at one of its fire stations. 192 people were tested on the first day, but hundreds more were turned away. Ktvus rob roth says now the Fire Department will expand the guidelines of whos eligible so more people could be tested. Reporter dozens of cars began lining up early in front of hayward fire station number 7 on monday morning. They came to get tested for covid19. The Fire Department wants to ease the wave of people wanting to get tested. It relieves the pressure off the 911 system, the hospitals, the clinics. Reporter firefighters are opening testing to anyone regardless of where they live or immigration status. We want to treat those and get those test kits to the people that need it the most. Reporter those people who meet the criteria for testing are ushered into a tent. They must have fevers above 100 degrees or meet any of the following conditions. Respiratory symptoms travel to asia or europe or been in contact with someone with the coronavirus, are over age 65, currently or recently pregnant or are homeless. First responders, health care workers, those types of individuals are going to have their own tent set up. Were getting 10 to 20 swipes per each nostril and the oral cavity from the back of the throat. Reporter the Fire Department plans to conduct 370 tests a day a plan made possible through a partnership. The test re the goal here is to not overwhelm the lab. We have to be able to be responsible and administer a certain amount of tests that the lab can process. Reporter the testing is expected to run seven days a week from 9 00 a. M. To 6 00 p. M. Over the next three weeks. Rob roth, ktvu fox 2 news. New numbers released this morning shows the number of coronavirus cases continues to rise dramatically here in the u. S. Johns Hopkins University reports there are now more than 46,000 cases across the country. Thats 3,000 more than yesterdays figure. There have been 593 deaths in the u. S. , and for the First Time Since the coronavirus reached the u. S. , the country reported more than 100 deaths in a single day. New york has more virus deaths and more cases than any other state in the u. S. At this point. At least 125 people have died. 20,000 others have been sick. Starting today, new york Health Agencies will begin testing two drugs for possible virus treatments. Work is also under way to quickly turn a Convention Center in new york city into a medical center. Construction will start this week. Well hope to have the construction down in about a week to 10 days. Yesterday, a shutdown began in new york much like the one in california. The governors order closes all essential businesses forcing millions of people to work from home. Time now 4 38. Today on capitol hill, talks will resume this morning where talks are reportedly on the verge to an almost 3 trillion for the coronavirus package. Doug luzader has more on the negotiations. Well, the markets and millions of americans are looking for some action from congress and we could see a vote on something as early as tonight. The womans family says she was bringing food and supplies to the group home last friday after the governor issued the shelterinplace when she was unexpectedly attacked by the suspect. She fought to get this person in the house too because he was 18, struggling and needed guidance and she was the one there to help and support him. The suspect surrendered to police and was booked into the Sonoma County jail. Brocmonte was a single mother and leaves behind two young children. Another woman has been picked to lead the Oakland Police department. Oakland mayor libby schaaf hired susan manhiemer. Chief man spp hiemer is expected to start next month. The interim position is for six months. The Oakland Police admission is working to find four finalists for the Permanent Police chief decision which is chosen by the mayor. The coronavirus pandemic is putting a hold on californias jury trials. State chief justice tawny cantil sakaewei has suspended the jury trials. The courts cant operate as usual and abide by social distancing guidelines and, with the schools closed, possible jurors have to stay home with their children. However, local courts can choose to conduct some business. Some airlines are drafting plans for a possible shutdown of passenger flights. According to the wall street journal, representatives from the Airline Industry and the government say while no final decisions have been made, the airlines are struggling to operate with a limited number of passengers. Tsa reports passenger flow is down 80 from a year ago. Ges Aviation Wing is set to lay off 10 of its Domestic Work force. 2,600 employees will be affected as the layoffs are set for the next few months. The company has furloughed half of its maintenance, repair, and engine overhaul workers. The layoffs are expected to save the company up to a billion dollars. And boeing has suspended its operations in washington. It plans to shut down for at least 14 days. Boeing is also suspending Maintenance Work on the ground and 737 max jets. It will deep clean impacted sites and come up with rigorous criteria for employees returning to work. Time is 4 49. Instacart plans to hire 3,000 shoppers to make up for the demand. The Company Needs more shoppers to buy and pick up items for their customers. Other Companies Offering pick up or Delivery Services theyre also seeing a rising demand. And safeway and its employees have reached an agreement on protections for grocery workers during the coronavirus pandemic. The terms of the deal include Flexible Work schedules to accommodate child care. Up to two weeks of pay for workers who contract the virus or they need selfquarantine. A 2 an hour appreciation pay premium for at least two weeks. I have some friends who work at Grocery Stores and theyre reminding people be kind. Theyre almost like first responders.
