Been working through the day with Governor Newsom and his administration through their unified command efforts in california. We have developed a plan which will be implemented this weekend. All passengers and crew will be tested for the coronavirus. There are 3,500 people on board this ship. The Vice President says that anyone who needs to be quarantine forward a positive test will be placed into isolation. Where might that cruise ship come ashore. There are several noncommercial ports where the vessel could drop anchor. Tom is joining us from outside the state lab in richmond where those tests were processed. What do you think are some of the possibilities that Health Officials are looking at . Reporter when you say noncommercial port, i assume that means, or one should assume that means, a port that doesnt handle cruise ships and things like that. There are plenty of ports in the San Francisco bays that could easily handle this boat. Lets look at a few numbers. This boat is 950 feet long. 120 feet wide. The most important thing is how far it goes underneath the water. Only 26 feet. So many, many dox around the bay could handle something thats only going down 26 feet. For example, the port of oakland has a 50foot draft. A boat 49 feet deep could do that. Venearbyia and richmond are ports that receive cars, the big square boats. They have about a 30foot draft. There is the possibility of mere island. The Oil Terminals have great big docks for unloading oil, and their very, very deep draft. 30foot draft. There is the possibility of mere island. The Oil Terminals have great big docks for unloading oil, and their very, very deep draft. A ship like this has lifeboats, 24 of them. They could handle a lot of their own passengers right there. Add more boats that might be sent there, they could quickly unload this ship if they needed to, and it would never touch land at all. The other possibility is to drop an anchor somewhere in the bay or river and do the very same thing. Use the tenders and all of the anchorage that you have there. And you would disturb, essentially, nobody. And you could do it very, very remotely. Those are the kinds of things that you can do. I must add one thing. It is very, very fortunate and possibly preplanned that they announced this after the close of the market. The market went down 420 points. Had this information come out before the market closed, it could have gone down a lot further. Now the idea that this ship is gonna come into the bay is gonna be controversial which is going to make this as much about politics as it is about pathology. So were gonna have to see where it comes. But there are plenty of places for it to come. Vice president mike pence talking today about the cooperation that he has been getting from the newsom administration. How do you see the unloading of this ship working . Once these tests are concluded and the number of cases does, in fact, increase, do you think theyll keep those impacted by the coronavirus on the ship . Real problem is what do you do with all these other people who may or may not have been exposed . The ship is probably the easiest place to keep them, simply because it is such a large ship. They have pretty much the comforts of their home there except for their freedom which is the most important. I think its more than likely theyll remove these people as quickly as possible, but remember, there this is 14day gestation period that theyre concerned about. So this could end up being another yokohama if were not careful. A complicated process. Tom vacar, thank you. Earlier this afternoon, President Trump visited the centers for Disease Control in atlanta. Officials say there are currently enough coronavirus tests for about 75,000 people in this country. Health Officials Say they expect to have up to four million tests by the end of next week. And they also say that anyone who needs a test should be able to get one. President trump today downplayed the severity of this outbreak. He said hey wouldnt be inclined to cancel events within the u. S. And said there could be a benefit to a decline in overseas travel. I like when people happen to stay in the United States and spend their money in the United States, okay . So i think people are staying in the United States. Theyre gonna spend their money in the United States. And this is ending. It will end. People have to remain calm. In this big vast land of ours, this great country of ours, 240 cases. Most of those people are gonna be fine. The vast majority are gonna be fine. We have had 11 deaths and they have been largely old people. Who are susceptible to whats happening. The president today also questioned the World Health Organizations estimate that the coronavirus death rate is above 3 , saying those statistics do not take into account people who have the virus who are not tested. Even so, the Sunnyvale Department of Public Safety advising the public to use a phone to obtain assistance. The reality is in the long term, its unsustainable. This is not gonna be able to be the strategy that we go forward with for the longterm. So while its good in the short term, until we find out more information, until theres more test kits, its probably a good interim solution to what we really needs to be a longterm strategy. Reporter currently the chief says a good amount of fear is driving the planning of the next step. Lowell high school in San Francisco was closed today after officials learned that a students parent was being treated for coronavirus. The school is the largest in the city. 3,000 students. Lowell sporting events and other gatherings are canceled throughout this weekend. For more insight, were joined by christine eldersma. Thanks so much for coming on. If students are forced to stay at home because of concerns about the coronavirus, what do you think are the best ways that they and their parents can continue their education . I think now that schools are starting to close, unfortunately, theyre starting to think a little bit ahead. Many schools have whats called an linemans. An lms. A learning management system. A Group Classroom or canvas. That will be a really important way for schools to communicate what kids should be doing at home. And there are other things like zoom and flack that parents and kids will be able to use in order to communicate with School Personnel and their teachers. And you think most schools and districts are prepared enough and have these online tools in place and ready to go . Well, i think it depends. Some of our Research Suggests that there are about one in ten teachers who say that their students do not have anyone access at home. Right. Or a computer. So its really gonna depend, school to school, whether or not the students at home have the tools they need to learn online. So it may widen that gap that already exists. Which is something we need to think about. I know youve done studies at Common Sense Media about this uneven access to education. When it comes to lowincome students and students of color. And its gonna be particularly seen here in this kind of a scenario where youre asking students to get online potentially and to try to continue their education. But a lot of students dont have Online Access at home. Yes, exactly in. Light of that, there are places that kids could go in order to get Online Access. Like the library. Whether or not were gonna be recommending kids gather anywhere in groups is probably unlikely. And i know as a teacher a former teacher myself, i wouldnt have been necessarily prepared with materials or lessons that i could share online. So its definitely a tricky situation. And i can recommend some free tools. Yeah, give some of those out if you could, please. Absolutely. I know you have a lot of resources. We have a whole list. We have lists of lots of resources for parents and teachers to access. To help them out during this time. But ill just throw a few out there. Of course conn academy. Khan academy. And theres the kids app as well. Wizard school is a great resource. And it has kids do little projects. Theres peak family science program, that parents and kids can do together. If the parents are able to spend that time with their kids. Theres waypoint. Edu. That would get kids outside. And folks can go to Common Sense Media to your website, and you have more information about those online resources . Yes. Okay. We have lots of lists, lots of resources for parents and teachers and schools. Okay. Wonderful. Very important information. Important tools to have ready to go here. Unfortunately. Because this seems to be slowly becoming the new reality. We appreciate you coming on, christine. Thanks so much for your time and insight. Thank you.
