Also waking up with patchy fog this morning, especially thick for our north bay valley floors, into your afternoon, Cool Temperatures under dry conditions, we will be in the 50s and then by tonight the scattered showers move in and will linger into Christmas Day. Details on this coming up in a bit. 7 01. Dublin, pleasanton, livermore areas, one northbound 680 north of 84, also westbound 580 at springtown. This is the problem spot we continue to watch for the last 45 minutes or so. This is a crash involving three vehicles. It is in the clearing stages, according to our crew that just arrived, crews tow trucks have cleared this out of the way. Only minor injuries reported. You can still see some of the emergency vehicles on scene. This is westbound direction of the bay bridge headed into San Francisco just past Treasure Island. This is a view from our san p we will have a check of the south bay commute in other spots but overall the theme this morning, your commute pretty light on this Christmas Eve. 7 02. Go back to the desk. If youre traveling for the holiday today, you have a lot of company. Bay area roads and airports are already busy and they will stay that way through much of the day. Im very happy i dont have to drive or fly anywhere. And Elissa Harrington is live at sfo, spoke with some of the late holiday travelers. How is it looking there . Reporter this is one of the busiest travel days at sfo. Im at the American Airlines checkin counter and look at all of these people getting ready to check in, check their bags. We are seeing a lot of families this morning. I got a chance to speak with families traveling with young kids. Yes, its challenging to keep them entertained for the whole flight but it will be worth it to see family for the holidays. We are pumped up. Its our time off away from school, away from work and just quality time. Even the airplane, we got new toys for the airplane. They are fed, good to go, i guess. The breakdown is mid flight. Mid flight. Reporter you have to keep them busy for the whole flight, right . Yeah. We downloaded all the movies they like. Its always the end. We have a six hour flight so thats going to be reporter do you like flying . They love flying. Reporter that one dad you just heard from, hes from santa clara, traveling with his three kids ages two, five and eight. They got up very early for a flight to new jersey but he says his kids are actually pretty good travelers. Sfo has been very busy all morning. We saw long lines at the tsa checkpoint but the good news is, the line was moving. Checkin counters were crowded. Theres a lot of airport and Airline Staff walking through the crowds directing people where they need to go. I came in two hours before my flight but i saw this line was going to take too long. But here we are, we are moving. Holiday miracle, right . Reporter so far this morning there are 14 delays and four cancellations, six fog grounded flights in chicago. But im told this morning that only impacts one flight here to sfo. We are looking at the crowd at the American Airlines checkin counter. It is definitely growing. San jose police are investigating this morning after a crash involving six vehicles. The collision happened last night at cottle road and highway 85. The road was shut down but its open again this morning. One person was seriously hurt and two other people were hospitalized for minor injuries. Police arent releasing any information about the people involved in the crash or what may have caused the collision. Santa rosa Police DepartmentsViolent Crimes team is investigating a fight that ended with one man stabbed. Patrol officers were called to the Santa Rosa Plaza mall before 8 30 last night. A 29yearold man was outside the macys store at the south end of the mall. Officers were told the man had been involved in a fight and someone pulled out a knife. The victim was taken to the hospital and we are told his injuries were not life threatening. Santa rosa police have a vague description of the man suspected in the attack. He ran away before officers arrived. Officers are asking anyone with information to call them. One man killed and four others lost their home after an Apartment Fire in San Franciscos richmond district. The fire started in the four unit building on 16th avenue near cabrillo street yesterday afternoon. Around 3 00 the man heard the smoke alarm going off. He checked his apartment and didnt say anything until smoke came up from the heater vent. He said that made him realize there was probably a fire on fl he raced downstairs and started banging on the door of the man who lived down there. Making a lot of noise, assumed after banging on the door for about a minute that he was definitely not there. He went outside to get the smoke out of his lungs and watched as fire crews managed to control the flames. They had to use a saw to get into the downstairs unit. Thats when they found his neighbor who had apparently been trapped inside his apartment. He was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead. Investigators arent identifying the victim but people in the building say he was in his 50s and worked as a software engineer. The cause of the fire under investigation. Happening today, a judge can decide whether a man accused of a deadly stabbing on a b. A. R. T. Platform in oakland is still competent to stand trial. John lee cowell is charged in the murder of mia wilson and the attempted murder of her sister at the macarthur b. A. R. T. Station last summer. The judge says that cowell has been uncooperative, refusing to speak with his attorney or doctors. A judge is expected to make a ruling today as to whether cowell will stand trial, be found incompetent or face another psychiatric exam. The family is increasing the reward and hoping to get new leads. The reward for information on 20yearold jonathan vandobalia has increased to 10,000. He left his home on may 3rd heading to a soccer tournament. His car was found on the san mateo bridge the next day. Investigators cant say if hes the one who drove it there. His family says he was not suicidal. Today some homeless mothers staying in a vacant house in west oakland will hold a Christmas Eve news conference. They will discuss their demands in response to the Real Estate Company that owns the house which has told them to leave. The moms filed a claim of right of possession and a Court Hearing scheduled for next monday. Their Attorney Says the Oakland Community land trust offered to buy the home and rent it to the working moms but a Real Estate Company which bought the property in july is working with a nonprofit to renovate the house. Do you know how many people will be squatting . We have the worst housing crisis in the United States that we have ever seen, worse than during the great depression. The nonprofit says once the renovations are made, it will sell the property to a first time home buyer with the money split between the Real Estate Company and the nonprofit. There are some problem spots that we continue to follow, one of them which is where we are going to start is on the bay bridge. This is the westbound direction heading into San Francisco. There was an earlier three car crash just past Treasure Island. Its been cleared but you can still see some of the emergency vehicles there that were reportedly some minor injuries involved and traffic is having to skirt around it. So give yourself little extra time to get into the city. Although the toll plaza, you will have no problem there at all. Lets move on. You will see the carquinez bridge to macarthur maze, a great drive on that westbound 80 corridor all morning long despite a couple of crashes that have been cleared up by San Pablo Dam road. Not impacting the traffic here much at all. Highway 24 in lafayette, lighter than we expect to see it on a typical tuesday morning. The Christmas Holiday having an impact on things. A quick check of the south bay shows everything is good, only thing to worry about, northbound 17 south of idyllwild, a vehicle blocking one of the left lanes. Im picking up on dark spots but looks like over our hills as we get into the north bay, though, napa, santa rosa and novato, the airports all reporting low visibility. Napa down to a mile. Novato half mile. Quarter mile santa rosa. Your stretch along highway 101 could be a bit dicey, be careful there. Looks like American Canyon, i 80, vallejo to fairfield we may have fog there. Fremont police are increasing patrols at Shopping Centers across the city following a violent attack this past weekend. Two men shoved a woman to the ground outside the walmart near stevenson boulevard. Witnesses say the men then dragged her across the parking lot before stealing her purse. The woman suffered several scrapes and bruises but was not seriously hurt. Police say the robbers got away in a black bmw. San Francisco Police are warning people to keep a close eye on their valuables when out in public. Authorities have gotten about 20 reports of someone approaching victims in the citys richmond district. The suspect starts off with small talk, brushes against the victims and then pockets their jewelry. Involves some type of sleight of hand where the suspects will come up with a friendly encounter, a close encounter. Investigators released a picture of one of the suspects, 44yearold manfred alinescu. Authorities say they swapped fake jewelry for the victims real gold. Governor newsom is extending further support to victims of devastating wildfires. Yesterday he signed an order that extends protections against price gouging to communities ravaged by wildfires dating back to 2017. Then governor jerry brown first signed the order in 2017. Governor newsom is now signing another extension because he says many reBuilding Permits havent been submitted or approved and Law Enforcement is still resolving criminal liability related to price gouging. Dozens of new laws go into effect in california in 2020. Here are a few of the notable new laws. Ride share drivers will be reclassified from independent contractors to employees. They will receive protections such as minimum wage, paid sick days and health insurance. The state minimum wage goes up to 13 an hour for workplaces with at least 26 employees and 12 an hour for places with fewer than 26. Bay area minimum wages are higher than the states. California is capping rent increases at 5 annually plus inflation. Paid leave goes from six to eight weeks for people taking keg of seriously ill relatives or who have had a new child. New evidence that a strong earthquake on an old Southern California fault could cause serious damage here in the bay area. Scientists say the gahr locke fault has been inactive for almost 500 years, they have linked it to two strong quakes in the Mojave Desert last july. Felt as far away as downtown los angeles. Included a 6. 2 magnitude foreshock followed the next day by a 7. 1 earthquake. There have been more than 100,000 aftershocks since. All that attic cyst showed ruptures along a web of two dozen faults inner connected. Some of the faults werent known about until now. It could produce an eight earthquake. Scientists say the new information shows the process of an earthquake rupturing other faults is more common than they previously thought and with that much interconnection, there could be longer and more intense shaking than they thought was previously possible. That means another big earthquake on the gahr locke fault could cause serious damage for us in the bay area. Allie rasmus has a look at the roads on this Christmas Eve. If you are driving from the east bay, maybe heading to sfo or somewhere along the peninsula, keep in mind youre going to have a problem that youre going to have to deal with on the bay bridge. This is the camera we usually point to show 101 before the 80 split but we have swiveled it around so we can show you some of the activity here. Take a look at the country, has actually faired really well this past weekend for all the travelers and if youre traveling this week, central part of the country dry, the northeast dry. We had some rain falling over areas of the deep south over the weekend but you can see that is now offshore just on the edge of florida there. In the Pacific Northwest we are dry at the moment. We do have some rain coming our way. Its going to wait until the evening hours, though. And then the brunt of the storm, the core is going to move towards Southern California before it crosses over. So we will receive scattered showers pretty much throughout and thats going to be it. Heres a look at our lunch hour where we are picking up on a little bit of moisture.
