Newly released video from firefighters who are battling what the government calls an unprecedented large number of fires. More than 90 fires are raging out of control. The countrys ongoing drought is fueling these fires in excessively dry wooded areas. These fires are also forcing several towns in eastern australia to evacuate. It was the most destructive wildfire in california history. The camp fire ignited one year ago today. It destroyed the town of paradise and surrounding communicateds right there in butte county. 85 people were killed and thousands of homes were destroyed in a matter of hours. Joining me live this morning from paradise, Paradise City councilwoman Melissa Shuster, good morning to you. Good morning. You walk around paradise these days, one year later, and you see what . And not just visually, but the emotion of those there in your communicated. Today is all about resurgence and recovery, and right now as we stand here, im having to talk a little bit louder because of the enormous amount of traffic that is on our main road, on skyway right now. There is just a ton of activity and paradise is coming back and coming back strong. Councilwoman, people in paradise woke up that morning one year ago like it was a normal day. Some went to work, some dropped off children at school, and within a few hours, they were running, literally, from a fire storm. When you first smelled the smoke did you think this is just another fire, we can get through this, or did you have a sense this one was different . I had eye sense this one was different. The skies were completely dark. It was about 10 00 a. M. , and what should have been a day that looks a lot like today looks, was midnight and windy and smokey and it was something i had never experienced before, 94 do i want to experience again. One thing that gets mothat morning is that so many of you continue to do your jobs. Really not knowing how your own families were or where they were at that time. Im talking about firefighters, im talking about dispatchers, teachers protecting students. A number of students were dropped off at school. Youre doing your job trying to save lives, as well councilwoman. I heard you got a call from your son. Take me through that moment about trying to do what you were doing but also wondering how your family was. Yeah, we got that call during the evacuation as we were evacuating town and he had heard from his wife and our two grandchildren who were on the other side of town where the fire was most of it was coming in to the town and they were stuck in traffic. They were unable to move. The debris in the windshield of their car had caught on fire, and the children were talking about how hot it was and the phone went dead and it was about another eight hours before we learned that they were safe and that was probably some of the toughest eight hours weve ever experienced. Its hard for me to grasp. A lot of people across the state and country, an entire community was destroyed. 85 people lost their lives. Five people of the council lost their homes. As a leader of the city, you say when it comes to the rebuilding and what once was. Ill tell you the fire is the thing that happened but the story is in our recovery, and paradise is coming back. Today, its a Beautiful Day in paradise. We are coming together on this day today is about all of those who make up this community. Paradise isnt about the streets and the buildings. Its about the people. Were still here. Were still strong. Its still paradise. And i know today youll have a moment of silence for those that lost their lives but you can tell me a little bit about the Ribbon Cutting ceremony thatll take place a little bit later . We have quite a few things going on actually. We have to my left over here, is the Building Resiliency Center which we will be opening for people to see for the first time. It will be a place where people can come and get all the information they need to begin their rebuilding. In the center of the Building Resiliency Center is a sculpture that is made up the keys of all the people who lost their homes. Well be unveiling that a little bit later and further down the street were going to be groundbreaking hope plaza which will be a memorial of hope and inspiration for the community. And then of course lining the streets is the 85 flags that are there to represent those who lost their lives in the fire. Paradise has always done or for many years, did a parade of flags for national holidays. Today, were doing it for those who lost their lives in the camp fire. A touching tribute with the flags on that street, councilwoman, and it is great to hear the traffic behind you. Youre very busy, its great to heart rebuilding is underway as you mentioned. Paradise is strong, paradise is together one year later. Thank you very much for your time. Thank you, mike. I like what you said, its still paradise. Sal, fog is again the story of the morning commute. All right, fog is the story, gasia, youre absolutely right. We are looking at a commute that has been foggy but its improving any way now that were getting closer to 9 00. For example, the bay bridge keeps improving every time we see it. If youve been waiting to see it, the drive to San Francisco, right now might be your opportunity. Just remember fridays are typically slow on a weekend get away. Highway 4 is a little slow in pittsburgh and bay point. 680 is moderately heavy and things are improving northeast bay, as well. Likewise in the south bay. This is getting a lot better. Highway 17, if thats you, and you drive on 17, beware its going to be a tough dry because of a lot of tough problems into the losgatos area. 8 47, lets bring in steven. Well head up to lake county where its clear. Our good friend chloe up there. Fantastic friday morning in lake county, if youre living in the city, i had to put on a coat to get milk. When is the heat coming back in its 51, 51 in San Francisco since 10 43 last night. 40s and very low 50s around the bay. A huge fog bank for november, not something we usually see and this time a year its just tough to burn off so the visibility has been tough. Its getting a little bit better but about a quarter mile, half mile, or 3 miles at livermore and were seeing fog and 50s and 60s by the coast. No rain, not for about two weeks but event he tell get here. Inland, its above average, but if youre coast and bay, its below average with that fog and fog bank. Normal is 65. Not much change, maybe a little decrease into the fog into the weekend, you guys. Still to come on the 9, a friendship forged during the camp fire. A year later well let you know about the unbreakable bond between this 94yearold woman who was rescued from the flames by her garbage collector. The 2019 hall of fame inductees have been announced. Well tell you which classic toys made the list. Blow a kiss, into the sun we need someone to lean on blow a kiss, into the sun all we need is somebody to lean on. What an intro. I cant help myself. Weve been having a ball playing motownn. Thank you for playing around and this came from this is kim. Thats it for traffic jams. If you have an idea for fridays theme, just let us know on social media. Just use the ktvu on twitter, facebook, or instagram.
