Transcripts For KTVU KTVU Mornings On 2 At 9am 20240713

Welcome to the mornings on at nine. It is good to be back in the good actually have some cooler temperatures out there playing a role in the firefighter there in the county. Really some good news for a change when it comes to the contained fire which fire crews are making significant progress the fires go just one square mile overnight to 120 square miles the real positive news is that containment has doubled from 15, to 30 now while severe wind gusts remain a concern high wind advisor was canceled overnight because wind was not as strong as predicted. They estimate that this fire will be fully contained by a week from tomorrow. It was and we want to update you on a breaking news story that was first brought you a little bit earlier here firefighters have knocked out flames of a new fire burning near the lake. This fire picked up around 730 this morning on rockwell road. Skye fox overhead so that the fire was not too big it did burn a small area of brush and there is no major damage. No word on how that fire started. Lets go over to see what weather will be working with in the favor of the fire posted. The windspeed has come way down. It is the humidity that is very very low. That is not changing now. But that should change gradually over time. The stronger gust now are in the open hills. 75 miles an hour as it comes down to 43 at 4 00 this morning. 23 miles now. It is a nice day right now 13 miles an hour. Thankfully not much is going on right now in the mountains. But right above this area it is 37 Miles Per Hour. The airflow though is offshore and i mean big time. Now you know the windspeed is not that strong you can go all the way down to monterey and cn eastern breeze of some sort that has allowed temperatures to go just kind of crazy even from 20s, the 50s and almost 60s. The humidity around the bay even from fairfield is nine . Oakland is 16 and conifers 12. And one time on the coast it was under 10 . Which is just amazing and the strongest gust in the last couple was earlier at 40 Miles Per Hour. Mission peak was 28. Still on the east at 26. 31 though with nine humidity is the problem right there. It is now 37 out of the north 10 ridge ranch is not that strong with the breeze. So thankfully the wind gust did not get too crazy there. But the humidity is going to be a slow recovery. 11 which is a little bit higher towards the valley floors around lake county. You can see nine there east southeast 23. It will be better up towards the upper leg. With 34 . That is the problem you guys is that the humidity will be slow to recover but thanks to the wind it will be tailing off and we have no more warnings in the near future. Maybe november 10 maybe november 10. Thank you so much lets talk more about that Good Progress made by the firefighters battling the contained fire. We are joined now by eddie thank you for being with us. Thank you for having me. It was after so you guys must be so relieved that the containment doubled overnight. Fire crews held that fire to just about what it was in the previous hours this must be a morning of relief. Yes, it sure is, a lot of hard work in this portion. Obviously ellsberg with that wind that we expected last night we made sure to reinforce some areas and put out any hotspots within those committees to make sure that once that wind hit that it would not pick up and take off on us and make sure that we were able to hold the line very strongly. As far as the eastern portion im sorry, go ahead. It was as good ask about the eastern portion. How is that looking . As far as the eastern portion that was a very active fire last night. As far as fire activity goes. We have had a number of dozers working those lines. And as of this morning they did complete the line. And their objective last night and i would have firefighters putting in over three miles of hose from the area to the hotspots and the hot areas along the fire line. They will continue to form those lines and put out the fires until they reach the objective progress is good right now and the firefighters continue to work around the clock. The know that the mission or objective has to get them. And all we care about is trying to get those people back to the committees and their homes as soon as possible. I know that they have had their air attack on and off and on again because of the wind conditions, now that it should be smooth sailing with wind several days how does that change what you do from the air . It is not so much the wind that affects the aircraft. There is more of the lack of visibility that did not allow our pallets to have good visibility which is why they were not able to fly on certain days but as far as these next couple of hours and the next days to come with the wind calming down to increase the visibility as of yesterday we had 27 helicopters working and they have dumped over 2. 7 million gallons of water for our Ground Troops the 747s have dropped more than 1 million gallons along those active portions. Along the east side and a little bit on the north side that we saw fire activity. But the air support within the next couple of days should be good to go. We will see what the weather allows us to do. As long as we have good visibility our pilots, and our planes will continue to fly and support our Ground Troops in the area. Is the fire actively burning right now . I know it was right on the line yesterday. Yeah it was active as far as this morning goes. Right now more crews are heading out there. So those will be able to give us a little bit more of an update but those dozer lines were able to hold those lines where that fire activity was. And that allowed our firefighters to work late this morning. And a good evening with california fire thank you so much for your help. Stay safe. Are the majority of the firefights right now are in the county but residence who are very familiar with wildfires are still on alert this morning. We are joined live this morning from blake from lake county good morning we just asked if the fire was still active and we can confirm that it is. You can take a look behind me and see all of the smoke billowing from that hillside. The aircraft is underway here. We have seen multiple aircraft making water drops in this area. Trying to put out this fire. Firefighters are pretty confident in that interview that you just heard they have the containment lines down. And firefighters are getting a handle on this. Now before we made our way to lake county we were on highway 128 where we saw a structure smoldering. A bridge leading to the property was lost by fire vehicles by a former employee from the History Center confirmed the main lodge of the Education Center in the county. She said the center was for high school and College Students that was just one of many businesses lost to the contained fiber for the down highway 128 there was a dangerous situation this morning a tree weakened by the fire fell across the highway crews cleared the road and thankfully no one was hurt but it is a hazard that people need to be aware of what evacuations are listed. We caught up with the valley fire captain who says could be relatively calm compared to the last few days. We have been patrolling the whole fire area. Mostly our crews have been over and we are patrolling the whole area now. Fire crews were preparing for the worst but the wind has been calmer than expected. The National Weather service actually canceled a high wind advisory because when below 2500 feet have died down but there still under a red flag wanting. Wind is still Strong Enough and humidity is low enough to create critical fire weather conditions. Now the goal is that california fire hopes to have the fire fully contained by november 7. Back at your life you can take another look this is the eastern part of the fire burning in lake county here you can see a lot of smoke building for that mountainside. Making these water drops 30 minutes or so it really seems like firefighters are getting physical on this fire and thankfully the wind burst is not as bad as expected. So just the relative humidity is very low. And the conditions have chances that this fire could start so that is something that firefighters are trying to be very careful about. This morning ktvu news. Thank you. Now some good news up next they have in other exactly that. This market here behind me you can see they opened up just a little while ago there was a small line waiting out there. At this point they really do not have power here either there running on generator so it is cash or credit only as you can see on their sign and it was like theyre only letting a few people in at a time. They have more than 6300 employees and contractors out right now. Also 44 choppers in the air doing inspections and working on restoring power at this time. The announced overnight that it would not cut off santa clara, santa cruz and the counties because of improving weather conditions. And really since we got out here wind has been fairly light. Now they did all this to save about 30,000 customers to deal with a no power situation but still over half 1 million customers have no power overnight because forecasted high wind in those areas. This latest round of outages affecting parts of 22 counties and the shutouts that started yesterday morning. Roughly 400,000 impacted customers are those who were originally hit by Public Safety power shut off so over the weekend. This latest round coming after the head of the company agreed to credit customers affected by that on october 9. Some were left frustrated after days without power others say that it is better to be safe than sorry. I dont mind them shutting it down you know, it is like i cannot believe that the state of the fires are like you can go without electricity if it helps at all. Dont do it. At this point they say that meteorologists are not predicting at least another weather event for seven days. So it is a Welcome Break for those that were hit hardest by the fires as well as these Power Outages. Allison rodriguez ktvu news. It was this fire has also proven that it can keep pushing to the west so far firefighters have been successful in preventing flames from moving towards santa rosa, and windsor. The air attack here has been critical. Planes, and helicopters have dropped over 1 million of fire retardant and 2 million gallons of water. The kept working its way. So it is like it is not okay maybe it will only go, no does not. Maybe the kept kind of you know it is like you are losing a game of chess aggressively. Divorce there are now nearly 5500 personnel on the scene california fire estimates that they will have containment on november 7. There was many people are still in shelters. They were forced to evacuate with little warning and they are relying on others while the kincaid fire burns. In san jose, the owner of a moving company is collecting donations that will be delivered to evacuees. Gabriel lopez says that they lived on the evacuation zone but he knows that the fires are taking a heavy toll on many families. The bus i want to fill up my truck. Investigators and so the company believe that they now know what sparked the fire burning in West Los Angeles it looks like it started after a tree branch fell and landed on some powerlines. But he is on gas cameras and photos show a branch breaking up the eucalyptus where that fire started on monday the powerlines are operated by the Los Angeles Department of water and power. The fire has grown to more than 650 acres. It is just 15 contained as of this morning. At least 12 homes have been destroyed and right now mandatory evacuation orders remain in effect for thousands of people the National Weather service is actually issuing a rare extreme red flag warning for Southern California through thursday night saying that this wind could be the strongest there and more than a decade. Southern California Power company that provides electricity to 14 Million People now says that the equipment may have sparked last novembers deadly fires in Southern California. Powerlines have been suspected of causing the fire that killed three people and destroyed more than 1000 homes in ventura and los angeles counties or final resting by authorities has not been completed. Southern california edison already faces lawsuits from fire victims and their families. Now is talk about the Power Outages. Some of the conveniences because of the power shut off dozens of low income seniors who live in the county say that there any potentially dangerous situation because they have been without literacy since saturday. Amber lee reports on the safety risk grid by the power outage and the residence that claims for help. Mark is among the younger tenants here. The 68yearold is checking on disabled neighbors trapped on the third floor with no power, no elevator on saturday. I am oxygen dependent so ive had to rely on the tanks being delivered with the power shut off and it is very frightening and scary. Down the hallway another tenant is also struggling. What i do after that . There are no safety or exit lights anyway. It was on the ground floor a 75 yearold wearing a headlamp helps guide us through the building and hallways that would otherwise be pitch black. It is dangerous for one thing. Not a lot of people here even have flashlights. She contacted ktvu to get the impact on the outage for the dozens of other tenants in her building. Has been hard. I just broke down yesterday and i cannot stop crying. It was the residence told that there is no manager or worker who works on site. They have asked management for a generator prior to this outage but have not received one. It was maybe the elevator could work so that the people who are trapped upstairs or disabled and very old can get downstairs if they need to get out. My big fear here is a fire. Their medical devices and phones. Half of them dont even know because i live inside their apartments. And are totally helpless without electricity. It was a terrifying expense for me. It was the tenants told that there is no hot water. Im told that some are turning on their stills for warmth. They have been warned not to do so but some of them are forgetful. We just talked about that situation less than an hour ago here and folks about some 10,000 to customers mostly in fairfax still dont have powers. She says that crews are patrolling but she did not have an estimated time as to when power would be restored. Already coming up on the news at nine you may have seen this photo of a chicago couple on their wedding day in our next half hour we will sit down with the photographer who captured this moment. 6, 7, 8 big dreams start with small steps.
