The fine art gallery at union square is now missing a valuable piece of artwork by Salvador Dali after a theft sunday afternoon. I turned my back for a minute or two to do something, or to talk to somebody, i dont know what , in the back of the gallery, when i turned around it was gone, just like that. Reporter the video from the henry square Hotel Next Door shows the thief walking along gary street. It was a tall guy, wearing a typical hat and colorful short and he was heading down the street with it under his arm, i had never seen him before. Reporter the gallery was small and the hopkins says he was only about 20 feet from the artwork went it was stolen. I was upset. I cannot sleep last night, i felt so bad about it. Reporter hopkins showed me a photo of the etching that was stolen. It is valued at 25,000. Hopkins says it has been on display for three weeks. The piece was inspired by picasso. One of the most important pieces from the 1960s. It is an original etching that is hand colored. Reporter hopkins tells me the artwork was on an easel and it would normally be tethered with a cord, but is unclear why it was not secure. He hopes by getting the word out will lead to the return of the artwork. He says unfortunately, it is rare to recover stolen art.
