Miles per hour at my house. Why are you shutting down the power . Beep because the humidity may be in the low digits. That means 50 Miles Per Hour may not be far away from me. You know how fast he can travel so thats why. And that very low humidity means the fire can spread quickly. We are bone dry. The soil was bone dry. We have a wind advisory that just started at 6 00 from the north and east bay above 1000 feet and you could get gusts up to 65 Miles Per Hour. Closer to the surface anywhere from 40 45 is likely. That tells you up in Higher Elevations, a few thousand or above, it could be rocking and rolling leader. More likely this afternoon into tonight into early thursday morning. The red flag warning goes for mendocino county, lake county out of the delta and also down to the Santa Cruz Mountains as well. Only San Francisco is not much of a breeze yet. Not too bad. Its variable in some areas. Summer west, summer itself. Its an Higher Elevations is starting to turn. Alice pete just turned northeast. Konocti is still west. North at cobb and north at santa rosa. Is starting to make the turn in areas of the north. Highs today in the 70s. These are near average. We are coming down after yesterdays warm to hot conditions. This system is ushering in very cold air. We get cool temperures. Mperatures wl not that warm if the wind, the combination is what im trying to say, with low humidity. 40s and 50s on these temperatures. 45 in morgan hill. Low 50s around santa cruz. 46 in felton. 50 in campbell and saratoga and cupertino. This is a powerhouse system but for us the end result will be wind, high fire danger and low humidity. 60s and 70s mainly on the highs. We are going to start with highway 24 because the signs near the tunnel, the caldecott tunnel say the tunnel close but caltrans now says the tunnel will stay open because they managed to keep the power on for the tunnel no matter what happens with the power in the surrounding area. The Caldecott Temple and lantos tunnel near pacifico will stay open. Because those tunnels will have power and that is a big relief for people use highway 24 and also highway 1. The latest information according to caltrans is the caldecott tunnel will stay open today no matter what happens with the power in the area and so will the lantos tunnel near pacifico. Lets talk about the other east bay commutes. 80 westbound is alittle slow. At the toll plaza we had earlier problems on the bridge but it looks like metering lights may be on. Extra slow from that earlier crash. That is backing traffic up at the toll plaza. Interstate 880 looks good. Nothing unusual here. If you are on 88 south you can see traffic is moderate. As we look at the peninsula, no major problems. It does appear the lights are out in the Robin Williams tunnel heading south although thats not really impacting traffic so much. People are driving through anyway but just in case you wanted to know, thats happening. 6 04 am. Lets go back to the desk. The first power shut off in the northern part of the state and here in the bay area. We just checked in with pg e. Here are the current outages. Take a look at the numbers. Sonoma county is the most affected with 67,000 without power. More than 30,000 are also without power in solano, napa and lake county. It is pitch black up and down first street and Sonoma Square but there is one bakery that is open. You can take a look. We are inside this bakery on first street and Sonoma Square and there are hardworking employees working in the dark for the mostpart. We do have some of our tv lights out here so its not completely black. But they are working hard to make sure they have enough pastries and bakeries staples for their customers. They want to they were prepared for the outage so they picked last night before the power went out. They still plan to send food out to market and they are open for customers. The cash registers dont work but they are hoping to get a credit card reader so customers can buy food even if they dont have cash. Power started going off the north bay just after midnight. In Sonoma County there are more than 66,000 people waking up to be no power. The city of Sonoma Police department, fire station in public works have generators in sodus city hall so they are ready to help. City Water Services will continue. The owner of the bakery said that the decision to cut power is frustrating but he has perspective. Im complaining but its nothing compared to what other folks have gone through or are going through. Theres no fire. We are being inconvenienced and its frustrating whatever it is but there is no peril outside that will put you in harms way. Reporter for our friends in the north bay there will be a device charging center at the sonoma Veterans Building on 126 for street west open from 8 am through 6 pm. People going to Hardware Stores and to Grocery Stores to buy lastminute items. Many portable battery chargers and anything else that can charge electronics are selling fast. Many stores have been inundated with requests for generators. Most places are sold out of those and dont be surprised if businesses shut their doors if the powers out in the area. Keep in mind if places do stay open they may only take cash. Its the duration of the shutdown that is concerning to me. If it takes 57 days to get the infrastructure back up and running, thats a big concern in terms of how people will function. Reporter san jose will open three Community Resource centers. May fear, camden and southside, starting at 8 am. People can also go to one of the community centers. One in san jose is at avaya stadium. New video from the caldecott tunnel overnight shows what appears to be an outdated sign. The sign said the tunnel may close at noon today but caltrans confirmed to us here at ktvu this morning that both the caldecott and the lantos tunnel will both remain open. Caltrans broaden generators overnight to keep the lights on and the fans running. The tunnels themselves have very large fans that circulate to make sure that exhaust from the cars are actually taken out of the total. Caltrans thought some of the tunnels would need to be shut down but bringing in the generators corrected that problem. The lantos tunnel on highway one near pacifica is also open. Caltrans broaden generators there. Thousands of commuters use that tunnel on the san mateo coast every day. Pg e says even after the wind dies down it may take days to get the power fully restored. They have to go out and inspect all the lines to make sure theres no damage before they turn the power back on. You looking at video from last month when the power was turned off to parts of the sierra foothills. And the north bay. Pg e says it will be a time consuming process for those crews on the ground and in the air to inspect such a wide area. If there is damage we identify the location of the damage, what that is, bring in qualified personnel to be able to safely do the repairs and then continue with the restoration process. Pg e says because they turn off the entire distribution and transmission lines, the outages may also affect customers who are not in fire prone areas. Cellular established backup plans last month after the federal government asked how they would keep service up and running during shutoffs and wildfires. For sites without generators, companies have fleets of mobile sites ready to roll out. Governor newsom defending pg es decision to shut off power but he also criticized them too. None of us are happy about it but this was all part of something that we knew would likely occur. Many months ago when pg e finally woke up. Look up to their responsibility to keep people safe and for them not to do this, in some respects, i think, potentially could put lives at risk. The governor was in oakland yesterday and said the statis working with all the affected counties to make sure they have the support they need to keep people safe. Also new this morning. If you driving toward oakland you may see signs that say the caldecott tunnel may close but the latest information according to caltrans is that the tunnels will stay open. The tunnels will be open according to caltrans. Some of those signs you see may not be up to date. Lets go take a look at the approach to the bridge. That looks all right. Some slowing at the toll plaza. The metering lights are slow because of a much earlier problem and that cleared out traffic on the bridge. Still slow here at the toll plaza. Interstate 880 in oakland in front of the coliseum looks pretty good and the east bay commute seems just a touch wetter than usual today. Maybe some people are not going or perhaps they are working from home or something is happening because it seems just a little lighter. I noticed that westbound 237 approaching 101 there is a crash so watch for slow traffic on 237 as you approach highway 101. 6 20 am. Lets get to it.
