We have details coming up. After many turbulent years, vallejo has named a new police chief, the citys First African American Police chief. We have reaction from the community about the appointment. Reporter an art festival in downtown vallejo friday night and word of a new police chief rippling through the crowd. A witness said an explosion sent debris flying and one report says the driver of the van may have lit a flare after the van broke down, starting the fire. The chp says no one was hurt. Hayward is considering closing a loophole after a Company Called the Reliant Group bought apartments last year. In march the city Council Passed an ordinance exempting the property from the just cause ordinance. The owner needed that to turn the property into Affordable Housing. After the exemption passed, tenants got a 60day eviction notice, telling them their incomes were still high. Our unit listed as available for 400 more than what we were paying. It doesnt even make any sense. The amendment was to allow affordable conversion units to happen and take place without just cause being a barrier to it. Participants check in at 7 30 and today is not going to be an easy day. They are getting everything set up and they are going to face a series of trials, kind of giving you an idea here. They will have to put out a live fire, responding to a multivehicle car crash, and perform an extrication from a vehicle using the jaws of life. They will also see how crews help in medical emergencies and a window rescue operation, plus seeing how a water rescue is done all live in realtime. Organizers say this will give the officials to see what its like for firefighters and paramedics to do their job and see the challenges they face every day. Lieutenant ken smith with the San FranciscoFire Department has been on the job more than 20 years and says, for instance, he wants them to see how cramped some of the ambulances can be when theyre trying to work on somebody who needs that medical help. Sometimes six to eight people in the back and its too crowded, so they need that bigger ambulance. Well have more coming up in the 8 00 hour. Well look at what you can expect for your neighborhood coming up. And we are learning about a mixup at sfo involving an airplane taking off from the wrong runway. That mistake left pilots with a runway that was shorter than anticipated, and it was not and isolated incident. Reporter back in 2015, incorrect runway information was sent into a computer and got a message. The engine need more runway and that crew thought they were on the longer runway, but they were on the shorter runways. When they took off, they almost overran the runway with only 400 feet to spare. The carrier reported the incident to the federal Aviation Administration that this had happened numerous times. We did a Data Analysis of our own and found out in the previous four years, there have been 25 incidents at sfo where airlines have taken off with less than a thousand feet of runway remaining. Reporter some but not all the incidents probably were due to erroneous runway selections punched into computers. As a result, changes were made to avoid this. We have been able to do extensive outreach of the pilot community, not just american but the International Pilot community as well. Reporter in all incidents, the runway was rapidly running out. But on all runways here, there is either 1,000 feet of ditional runway the plane can use or have softer materials to slow the plane. The function is to stop aircraft that overshoot the runway. Reporter after this 2017 incident and the corrections made. Sfo has not had a single incident of a plane departing with too little runway left. Work on runway repair at sfo is ahead of schedule. The airport said last night crews transitioned from the first phase to the second phase, which was supposed to happen on monday. The airport closed one of four runways and they are trying to construct a new base. We have seen hundreds of Flight Cancellations and delays every day, and those are expected to last until september 27th. Barts construction near the lafayette station is ahead of schedule. This is a live look at highway 24 and the lafayette festival wont be affected. There will be regular bart service during fleet week. San franciscos iconic cable car system was shut down yesterday for maintenance and improvements. During the shutdown, buses will replace the cable cars on the same routes. People who are fighting and survivors and friends and family can join, and each step can be emotional. There is a lifesaving message to share. Reporter a walk down memory lane brings smiles to sarah and allison. These pictures are special because they are with their dad. I was daddys girl. She was mommas girl. Correct. Reporter hes gone now but they say hed want people to know his story, because maybe hearing it could save lives. I feel like sometimes he says, im so proud of you, im here with you, youre not alone. Reporter in 2016 he went to the hospital with back pain. That was the night they discovered he had tumors. It was Prostate Cancer. He had annual physicals, had the psa tested every year. Unfortunately his doctors overlooked that his psa was increasing a little each time. Reporter a tumor on his brain led to stroke. He was really a fighter. He went through got to tumor removed from his skull. Then two weeks later he had a tumor removed from his leg because the cancer had spread. He was fighting cancer and healing from the surgeries at the same time, showing us how much dad wanted to be there for us. He wanted to be there for his family, his daughters and granddaughters. He wanted more time, and so he fought. In those dark times, brought light with love. He got wheeled out of surgery and we went into the Recovery Room to see him, he couldnt talk. He did sign, i love you. Porter in the hospital they found their own way to fight back. Reporter she found the walk when we were going through this time, drained of energy and we were sad. She was like, lets do something about this. Reporter they became team pete and became one of the top fundraisers for the walk in San Francisco. Im doing this for the girls and i want the girls to have this memory of me walking across the finish line. Reporter on the day of the race, he made good on that promise. He got up the last ten steps and walked across that finish line. The dj played cant touch this, which is his favorite song. Reporter peter lost his battle with Prostate Cancer last year, but even at the end, he was changing lives. Even while my dad was really sick and he knew that the end was near, he would make a opponent to tell other people to get their numbers checked. Somebody said at his funeral, i got my psa checked out because pete told me to, and i was diagnosed. Reporter now his daughters continue his legacy, walking, raising money and awareness, because in those moments, they know their dad is still with them every step of the way.
