President pushed for a partial vaping ban amid those growing health concerns. Christien kafton joining us live from San Francisco, and this is one of the few cases where the president and several cisco city leaders are aligned. The Trump Administration signing and citing an increase in the number of youths vaping. It also comes on the heels of news of the sixth now reported vaping death. President trump made the announcement, acknowledging that vaping is big business. But saying that the more than 450 recent reports of lung ailments and at least six deaths associated with vaping are alarming. We can allow people to get sick, we can have our youth be so affected. Health and Services Secretary laid out a timeline. It will take several weeks for us to put out the final guidance which will allow all that prominence around the enforcement policy. Then there will likely be a 30 day delayed Effective Date which is customary with the good guidance practice. Tobacco flavored vaping product makers would have until may have 20 20 to file for fda approval if they want to continue their sales. Several ciscos been on vaping products, specifically calls those products to undergo fda approval. The supervisor cowrote the legislation with the city attorneys office, and he says San Franciscos band has made everyone take a closer look at e cigarettes. We have made sure that everyone has seen the impact and effects of what e cigarettes can do to harm communities. They are all looking into proposition c, hoping to replace it. Saying we fully support any effort to keep flavored nicotine and Tobacco Products off the shelves and out of the hands of kids. We also reached out to juul labs based here in San Francisco, one of the larger ecigarette manufacturers, and they say that we strongly agree with the need for aggressive category action, we will fully play with the final fda policy. When effective, it is very likely that this proposed ban from the trumpet ministration will face some type of challenge in the courts. What is a rare here is not a challenge from San Francisco. Christian, did we hear anything yet from the city attorney, how he is responding to this proposed ban . In just the last half hour or so, i received a message from the city attorneys office, they say its not very often that they are on the same page with the Trump Administration, but they say in this case they do agree that there does need to be more fda oversight over e cigarettes, and in particular over those flavored e cigarettes. A lot of support for this man in San Francisco, thank you. For more in todays development we are joined on the phone by dr. Mattwillis, offin countys Public Health cer. We talked earlier in the w when your department was warning the public to stop vaping altogether. Now we have the president saying that he wants at least a ban on flavored vaping products, first off, how likely do you think this is to happen, and how much of a difference might this make in deterring, especially young people, from vaping . This comes as an excellent news, it couldnt be better times. At the local level, doctors and Public Health people have been working hard, city by city, town by town, to try to get local bands on the sale of flavored vaping products. Mainly because the federal government has frankly been slow on this. For a lot of us, its about time tt we have the fda stepping up to take that step that we need to protect our community. So we are thrilled with this news. We hope that it will actually lead to what they are promising now, which is reading the shelves of flavored vaping liquids. We know they are enticing for the young people, we are seeing increasing numbers of vaping across young people. So over the next few weeks we need to make sure that they deliver on that promise of a comprehensive ban. What you think about them making sure it is, and going after flavored products, as opposed to all vaping products . Well flavoring, we know from the literature, and just from recent history, that flavoring is particularly harmful in terms of vaping, then they develop an addiction to nicotine. Which is the opposite of what the industry would say which is its a device to help people stop smoking. We see more likely increases in smoking because of the introduction of flavored products. I think this is something that will be negotiated, as it is hashed out in terms of implementation. They are announcing that tobacco flavoring will be allowed, but other flavorings will be banned. I think for our interest in terms of protecting our young people, the flavored products ban is a huge step forward. Thank you so much during kennys Public Health officer, matthew willis, thank you so much for talking with us.
