News that billionaire investor and activist tom stier has launched his 2020 that comes after Eric Swalwell ended his bid. Well, Eric Swalwell is out. And stom steye tom steyer officially in. He changed his mind. Now, officially he has made the announcement. He faces a stiff competition. There are 23 candidates. He is known for his efforts to impeach donald trump. He spent millions of dollars on a campaign called need to impeach. Hes also one of the democratic partys top donors. What are his chances . Steyer has more. He said he could still struggle to qualify for the next round of debates. He needs 65,000 donors by july 16th. Steyers announcement comes just one day after Eric Swalwell pulled out of the race. Today ends our president ial campaign. He wasnt faring well in the polls. He didnt have the money. His campaign hasnt reported his finance reports in over two months. He didnt have much name recognition from the outset. And so i think he just had a number of factors that were going against him. A young boy was seriously hurt in brentwood, after falling out of a secondstory window onto concrete outside of a home. He fell last night on princess way, just before 7 00 p. M. He was airlifted to uc davis medical center. We have not heard any information about his condition. Police are investigating what may have led to the childs fall. We have new information on the deadly San Francisco shooting that we told you about yesterday morning. Investigators say the victim was 15yearold devan hahn, who was killed early yesterday morning in the mission district. They saw the car speeding away and they chased it, but they say the driver got away. And police say this does appear to be a targeted shooting. If you have any information, youre being asked to call police. Happening today. The Berkeley City Council will debate a proposal to require all new construction in berkeley to have all electric infrastructure, instead of natural gas. That proposal calls for phasing out the use of natural gas in buildings in berkeley. Calling it a leading source of Greenhouse Gas emissions from berkeley. This proposal says using electricity for Home Appliances is a lot more energy efficient. Meantime today. The Dixie School District is due to vote tonight on new names for the School District and for dixie elementary school. The school board voted back in april to remove the name dixie, over concerns about references to slavery, racism and the confederacy. The school board had a committee to come up with a short list of new names for both the school and the School District that was getting backing from the public. Tonight, the school board will hear from the public before they vote on name changes. That meeting will be at 5 30 this evening at School District headquarters. More than 400 educators and academics signed a petition for a historic and controversial mural at George Washington high school in San Francisco. The open letter calls it. As they describe it, quote a significant monument of antiracism. The mural depicts slavery and features white. But the writers are saying they are ignoring the meaning behind historic art and focusing on how it makes them feel. They voted to cover the 1936 mural. But the people behind the letter plan to present their case this week. Master tenant at ghost ship warehouse will be on the stand again today. Derek almena testified yesterday, in his own defense, he told his lawyer, tony serra, he was remorseful about the deaths of the 36 people who died in the warehouse fire. Almena was emotional. He said he always believed the warehouse was safe. Otherwise, he wouldnt have stayed there with his family. Attorney serra said his client connected with the jury. The emotion that he manifested. Now a contractor who also lived at the ghost ship warehouse testified and said he heard bottles breaking and an argument in the warehouse before that deadly fire. A new bill that changes the standard for police use of force is on its way to governor Gavin Newsoms desk. It was approved last night by the state senate. It would allow police to use deadly force only when its necessary to defend against an imminent threat of death or prevent a serious injury to themselves or someone else. The current standard allows deadly force if the officer has reasonable fear theyre in danger. Governor newsom is expected to sign that bill. California prosecutors are launching a new program aimed at reducing the states prison population. The 5 Million Pilot Program is called restorative justice. And the goal is to have victims directly confront their victims. And give the offender a chance to make amends instead of serving behind bars. Victims can demand restitution. Some just want an apology. While there are critics, one woman who lost her daughter to a drunk driver, explains why she support its. A program like this will never bring your daughter back. No. But maybe it will save someone elses life. When they get out, you dont want them to reoffend. You want them to be on the right track. I dont want another mother to go through what i went through. I got a life sentence. Its kind of like a. A. For criminals. You meet and admit youre bad. The bad news is, a lot of these people are scammers. And they will lie to get the program and avoid jail time. The offenders cannot have an extensive criminal background. And sex offenders and murderers are not included in the program.
