Reporter if you didnt know better, you would think were in tahoe with the snow around us. It was a surprise to people this snow t here in the bay area. Instead of a fourhour drive to the sierra, this view was right in the backyard. A turnout off highway 17 south of Redwood Estates was the go to spot for snow ball fights and selfies. Its amazing. Unbelievable. Reporter snow in the bay area is rare. So rare, many didnt believe it until they saw it themselves. They just saw snow. Its all snow up here. Wow, its all snow. Lets go up here and take a pit stop. R eporte teacher had to prove to colleagues and students. She packed a cooler full of snow to take to class. Oakland teachers voted to authorize a strike. 95 of those who voted are ready they will be on the picket lines immediately and it could happen before the end of the month. Without a very serious schoo that addresses smaller class size, more stewart support, a living wage, and keeping the neighborhood schools open, we expect to be on strike by the end of the month. Reporter the Oakland Education Association has not set a strike date. With 95 of the teachers willing to strike, the union is sending a School District a warning. Im absolutely ready. Reporter this schoolteacher says the issues are well worth striking over. The Teachers Want a 12 pay increase over three years. The district is offering 5 . But must not isnt the only sticking point. Its about forging a c classroom, whether a smaller class size and counselors and nurses that are needed at the school sites. Reporter contract talks golg going on more than a year and teachers voted last week on the strike. The School District is making plans if the teachers do walk out. We will have substitutes on campus and the Central Office staff going to schools to support and be sure the education continues. Reporter it likely would happen after february 15th when a report from a Fact Finding Panel is set to be released. Parents we spoke with are supportive of the teachers, but say a strike is disruptive. I would deal with it. Its going to stop me. I have to find another sitter. Ill have to keep my kid home if he wont be in class. And not going to be teachers available. Thats not okay. Reporter at this point, a strike is not a done deal. Negotiations can still take place. Although no new talks have been scheduled. Well, the snow in the bay area continues to be one of the big stories. Sky fox was up over mission peak earlier. Preserve covered in snow. And Storm Tracker 2, over the last couple of hours, we dried out. Over the sierra it continues to fall and there is an advisory for travelers there through the afternoon. You can see for us, its a mostly clear one for the second part of the day. And the sierra, winding down and slick up there. Some of the snow in the foothills. And lake tahoe, bit tonight, winding down. We were measuring a few inches and several inches in the higher spots, take a look at the sierra. Several feet, from six to seven feet. Storm totals so far taking a look at north star, 72 inches reported there. Sierra, 80. And squall, 77 inches. So that is great news there. Giving you a look at the temperatures. Now in place will be the cold weather and this is the headline today and tomorrow morning with temperatures expected to be colder than this morning. Flt in the afternoon, 51 San Francisco. Well be below freezing for the and into the upper 30s, low 40s for the bay side communities. And wednesday, thursday, friday, notice we are drier. I should say that transition is friday with wet weather in the forecast once again. Saturday, looks iffy. Sunday, msh more rain. And state lawmakers are considering a bill to stop illegal robocalls. The proposal would end scams known as neighbor spoofing. Scammers use and ph some people get the calls at least six times a day. They call with different numbers so often its impossible to track whos calling and where from. Well ask the Tell Communications providers so ensure there are safeguards and its not a fake call. In 2017, americans received more than 30 billion robocalls and some experts estimate up to 40 of the calls were scammed. According to reports, consumers lost 900 million due to call us involving fraud free. Still to come k improving safety on the roads. A list to save tens of thousands of lives every year. Why, why are these systems not Standard Equipment in all newly manufactured vehicles . Reporter the list was scheduled to be unveiled last month. That announcement was canceled because of the Government Shutdown. The ntsb says the shutdown delayed investigations of 97 accidents and evidence may have been lost. I worry that due to the Government Shutdown related delay and our getting on scene, we may have lost potential life saving information. Reporter more than 40,000 people were killed in travel related crashes and accidents last year. Fox 2 news. And muni is seeing more operator police stations due in part to the shut down of the Company Chair yot. More than 00 people submitted applications in the latest round of hiring and 110 of them are former chair yot drivers. They were laid off on friday. The mayor invited them to apply to muni. And people in the livermore the reporter we are 1,000 feet in elevation off of mines road near m and this is how high up you have to go to see the snow and step in it and pick it up. Theres a little bit of snow left. Maybe enough for a snow ball. It is melting quickly as the day goes on. Earlier this morning, a lot of folks drove up from the valley to take in the snowy, beautiful winter landscape you see out here. One woman grew up here and hasnt been to tahoe. I was driving down the at mont and saw the snow. I have to make it up hire and see it. This is crazy. Reporter like a lovelity. Ive never touched snow before. I have to touch it. Reporter and this womans property is 3,000 feet in elevatio had at least five inches of snow at her home. You can see it caked on i wo morning and threw some wood on the fire. And it was snowing. And i mean, it was snowing. Reporter this is what the drive looked like overnight around 3 00 this morning. A real snow shower on i580 making it look like truckee. Big rigs pulled over the wait it out. And back in the hills, the sun is out and the snow is melting pretty quickly. It is supposed to remain cold out here over the nebs next couple of days. If youre driving in high elevation, drive carefully, the roads could be icy. The top of the county received snow overnight and this morning. Rangers were concerned about the icy conditions and closed the gates until 9 00 a. M. Hikerswere allowed to enter the trails. If you want to take the four mile walk to the top of mount tamalpais, you can go and see the snow. And what i like is its cold enough the snow is sticking around for the afternoon. Yes. A San Francisco couple missing in the National Forest was found safe after stuck in a blizzard. The 18yearold and her boyfriend hadnt been seen since last webz. The two were supposed to camp and got stuck in the snow on a road that had been closed. They were spotted late yesterday afternoon by a volunteer rescue group in a remote area. We talked with the sister and she was overjoyed they were found. I am so excited. I am so relieved. I am so, so grateful. The families know the story could have had a different ending. And they were getting ready to call off the search for the day when they were found. And at a deadly shooting near campbell. Around 10 00 last night on cadillac drive. Authorities arent saying much about what happened. We do know the victim is an adult male and died at a local hospital. Anyone with information on the shooting, call the police. You can also call triem stoppers. And a french woman is in custody suspected of starting a deadly paris apartment fire. 10 people died and 30 people hurt, including eight firefighters. It started around 3 30 in the morning paris time. Some people jumped to neighboring roof tops. The 40yearold suspect has a history of psychiatric problems and detaped after she tried to set a nearby vehicle on fire. She is held and will under go a series of medical exams. And back here in california, people in paradise who lost everything in the campfire are forced to relocate once again. The city Council Voted to overturn an ordinance that allowed people to put trailers and rvs on the properties. In order for fema to complete the cleanup, no one can live on the property. Fire victims are frustrated they are forced to move yet again. Were living in parking lots. Trying to wait for the town of paradise to give us a space, even if its temporary, for us to put trailers and rvs until the homes are cleaned so we can go home. We want to go home. We have no money, no resources. The reason we dont make the rules is because were relying on others who do have the resources to help us. City leaders are warning people if they do not move, the town could lose federal funding. Ing. Bart losing millions of dollars every year to riders who dont pay.
