Player friday night, saturday and then also on the weekend, more on that in about 10 minutes. 60s on your temps today. 7 01. Sal is here and im not sure where you want to begin this time. So i will Say Something to you, steve. Yes, sir. We got lucky commutewise, that everything you just talked about, the system moving through, sort of missed the heart of the commute. I mean, it could have been a lot worse if it was raining right now, for example, but it seems to have stopped raining on most of these pictures im looking at. And the traffic is moving welcoming up to well, let me take that back. Its moving normally, which is to say its slow coming up to concord. But its not really, really slow like it could be if it was raining hard. We had a dose of that a couple weeks back, as you remember. This is a look at the rest of contra costa county, west, hercules to richmond, slow traffic. 680 slow from about 242 to 24. And 24 a little bit slow through the area. We cant show it to you really because its fogged in as steve has been talking about, the fog 80 through berkley is slow at the bay bridge. Almost back to normal. We had earlier issues near the toll plaza kind of slowed things down. But now looking like a normal thursday morning commute. Little bit wet out there. 880 north and south looking pretty good in front of the Oakland Airport and on the peninsula at 101 slow in san mateo. All these are pretty usual things, south bay commute is beginning to fill in on the way to the west valley. Lets go back to the desk. As sal as steve have been reporting, this mornings rain is causing problems on the roads. One big problem spot is in marin county. Lucky drive, an area we know is known for floods. Reporter usual problem spot when it comes to roadway flooding but not anymore. It hasnt rained since about 4 30 this morning. We can see now theres so much traffic going through and because we havent much rain, theres no more standing water left here out on northbound 101 at lucky drive. It was a different story, though, during the Early Morning, overnight hours where there was two to 4 inches of standing water across all of the lanes in the northbound direction. The chp had to issue a travel advisory for this area to warn people to use caution when they were driving through. But again, things have improved a lot since we dont see anyone any drivers splashing or plowing through those giant puddles that sometimes you see on lucky drive. A lot of that rainwater and standing water has now drained away. But today it is going to be a soggy commute if you havent headed out the door just yet. If youre out there on the roads, be sure to drive safely. We have rain overnight hours, the first rain we have had in about a week, so the roads are slick and also it bears repeating if you have your windshield wipers on, even if its daylight you have to have your headlights on as well, thats california state law now. Live in marin, allie rasmus,. Our state is conducting the second snow survey of the season today. The first survey was 2019 was on january 23rd. The department of water reports says the Sierra Snowpack at that time was 67 of average. Scientists are eager to see the effect this months storms have had on the snowpack. The state manually or electronically measures the water content of more than 260 locations across california. Pg e will be back in court today for a hearing about its bankruptcy filing. Today the bankruptcy judge will hear arguments that pg e should keep paying its 24,000 employees as well as its suppliers for natural gas and electricity. Also the judge will consider a motion to allow pg e to get 5 1 2 billion dollars in bank loans and give those banks top priority for repayment. The state Public Utilities Commission Already approved that plan. Now, yesterday pg e was in a Different Court for a Public Safety hearing. That judge said pg e did not live up to requirements after the 2010 san bruno pipeline explosion. The judge made a very strong statement and created a sense of urgency, a sense of urgency thats been lagging. The judge will not issue a penalty until after he sees updated safety plans that are due next week from pg e and other state utility companies. Meantime in sacramento the cpuc president was on the receiving end of some tough questions about pg e and Public Safety. Michael picker was asked if regulators are doing enough to protect Public Safety. Picker says the cpuc is actively monitoring pg e to make sure its reducing the risk of wildfires. Lawmakers say if they are not satisfied, they are going to push through legislation to force regulators to move faster and more efficiently. This morning wildfire survivors will be speaking out condemning a decision by pg e to refuse competition to wildfire victims. They are going to hold a rally at the headquarters of the states Victims Compensation board in sacramento. They will read the names of the 86 people who died in last years butte county fire. That demonstration starts shortly after 9 00 this morning. A San Francisco man is in the hospital in Critical Condition this morning after he was badly beaten near fishermans wharf. Police say 32yearold vin voo was walking on beach street when he was attacked by a group of men. He was second to his second job as an overnight clerk at the argue naut hotel who he was attacked by a group of men. On tuesday they say voo told them he doesnt think he will survive. The friends are now appealing directly to the attackers. You can take his old iphone, you can take his backpack but dont beat someone and make them like paralyzed. It doesnt make any sense to me. If you did this, just come forward. Police are reviewing Surveillance Video from the area. Our time now 7 07. A major multivehicle crash in michigan blamed on the intense weather in the midwest. A truck driver had to swerve to avoid becoming part of that big crash. The extreme weather is being blamed for at least eight deaths in the midwest. We will bring in ray bogan, live in minneapolis all bundled up again, ray. Reporter good morning. I have been standing outside for about maybe 10 minutes or so. I am not sure if you can see it on camera but slowly but surely ive had these icicles start to form along my hat right here. Its pretty darn cold out. But we are here at the airport where they are doing their best to keep these planes up and running. That has not been the case along much of the midwest where this cold has really had a big impact on everyday life. Very cold, freezing. Reporter the polar vortex isnt just bringing life threatening cold. It strained electrical systems, broken water pipes and turned major bodies of water into sheets of ice. The air temperatures in chicago and milwaukee dipped to 23 degrees below zero wednesday with minneapolis a little colder at minus 27. The wind chills around the region made it feel like negative 50 or lower. The wind the wind chill is probably the worst of it. Reporter with many businesses and schools closed, the streets were largely empty. The weather freezing many forms of transportation wednesday, including more than 3500 flights across the midwest and northeast. At chicagos Ohare Airport it was so cold fuel lines froze, forcing some flights to land with an overage of fuel in order to make it to their next destination. More than 2000 flights are already cancelled thursday. The storm is now working its way across the northeast. This was the scene in buffalo, new york yesterday. The region spent wednesday preparing for the temperature drop. Best thing to do, if you can, stay inside. If you have to go outside, wear a lot of warm clothing and then come back in when you can. Reporter i saw a picture of the thermometer for the National Weather service in minneapolis here this morning and it said negative 30 degrees. But forecasters say by sunday there could be a 75degree swing so it will be about 75 degrees warmer. We can tell you from speaking with the residents here, looking at all the School Cancellations and just all the ways this has slowed down the midwest, people are very happy about that it will at least be maybe in the 30s. Back to you. Ray rogan in minneapolis, thank you. Time 7 09. Today governor gavin newsom will go to san diego. He will talk with local leaders about humanitarian aid for migrants who want asylum. He said the State Government needs to do more to help cities near the border provide support for immigrants and asylum seekers. The Government Shutdown may be over but theres a beach in the north bay thats still closed because of it. A colony of elephant seals moved onto drakes beach at point reyes when there are no park rangers out there to keep them away. Now, this is seal puppy season. A lot of female seals gave birth to about 40 pups. So now the mothers and their babies are scattered along the beach near the parking lot with no signs they will be leaving soon. When you get these storms and these storm surges, the seals will displace looking for better habitat, and so they came up to drakes beach. We had closed that beach during the shutdown due to flooding. It was dangerous for the public to go down there. So it was just a Perfect Timing for everything. Now, drakes beach is still closed to the public but this weekend the park Service Plans to open up at least part of it. They are going to have rangers out there to lead visitors to the beach so they can see the seals but you wont be allowed anywhere near them. Rangers are going to see how well that works for deciding what they are going to do next. 7 11. No one was hurt but the plane did suffer major damage. To the north bay now where one person is dead after he was hit by a car while crossing a four lane highway in napa. It happened last night in the northbound lanes of 29 near trump tower trower avenue. The driver is cooperating with police. Youve been busy this morning. The weather and the wet roads that made it a busy day. It has. Remember when we came in here, we drove in here about 3 00 hour it was raining. Raining hard too. It was. And the windshield wipers of going and then fortunately kind of moved out which helped us for the morning commute. Now when we look at highway four its wet and theres fog but not raining anymore. And that has made these commutes closer to normal than really, really slow. This is a look at highway 4, 680 and also 80 in contra costa county. You can see that the traffic is just about what it normally would be on a thursday, and 80 westbound is slow through berkley. We have got a little bit lucky when it came to the timing of the rain. Its backed up all the way up to the maze and the metering lights are on so slower than than usual. We even had Police Activity thrown into the mix earlier but thats all gone and traffic is better. As you look at the nimitz freeway, 880 north and south looks okay. San mateo bridge and dumbarton bridge heavy. The peninsula traffic, its not that bad. Its slow in san mateo and then the Silicon Valley commute is about normal getting up into sunnyvale and cupertino. Northbound 101 is slow as you approach the old Moffett Field turnoff there. Is there fog out there . People are not watching, steve, they may not know what youre talking about. They can turn around and look because i know they listen sometimes. It is very foggy. This is lafayette. Are you sure about that, jeff . Are you sure about that . [ foghorn ] it is very foggy, even gasia said that. I just stepped outside and there are low clouds around. That is the byproduct of our system that gave us rain. Many record lows have been set already. 180 or excuse me, 108 records have either been set or tied and 44 more are close to it, including chicago, which dropped to 21 below this morning. That beat the old mark of 12 below in 1985. Thats called shattering it. They didnt just beat it. They beat it by a lot and records go back to the 1870s for chicago. Our system gave rain where we absolutely thought it would and that was on the coast, peninsula and Santa Cruz Mountains and santa clara valley. North and east, just didnt do it. Thats how close it can be sometimes in the atmosphere. Boulder creek it the most, i saw just shy of an inch of rain. Santa cruz and watt tonville three quarter. Point reyes 2 3, San Francisco 59 100. It was coming down out there about 1 00, 2 00 in the morning. Mill valley 1 2. Redwood city close. Oakland a third and santa rosa a quarter. Not far away, double that amount, santa clara. Our system is now in central and almost in Southern California with a lot of convection down in Santa Barbara. Another system is moving in and it will be a big time event. Get to that in a second. You can see a lot of lightning there. Burn areas might be flood concerns, not only from that system but from the next system which has a lot more going for it. It has tapped into very deep moisture. A surface low is going to form. Where that goes in is around the bay area. That will crank up the win and enhance the upslope for Santa Cruz Mountains, parts of marin county and Russian River to produce some three, 4inch amounts would not surprise and then a cold system comes in sunday night into monday. That will lower the snow levels big time. So winter storm watch is out in advance of that. It will go up on friday night, saturday, as the front comes in saturday morning. We will get some moderate to heavy rain, then snow level comes down to 4000 feet and theres going to be big time totals above 7000 lake level by the time we get to monday morning. 60s on your highs today, today is a little bit of a break now until tomorrow morning and then tomorrow afternoon. Rain saturday morning looks like heavy duty rain and wind. Break a little bit saturday afternoon. And then sunday, monday, a cold rain moves in along with lower snow levels. Thank you. 7 20. Medicines you may rely on to give your children relief are on the recall. Coming up the Health Warning about some overthecounter infant medication. Also well, we will get to that in a second. We were going to mention that a Woman Working as a walgreens pharmacist is accused of filling nearly three quarters of a million prescription. The problem, though, investigators say she doesnt have a license. We will talk about the charges she is facing next. 7 23. A recall for a wildly used infant pain reliever is expanding over concerns that the overthecounter medication may contain dangerously high concentrations of ibuprofen. The affected product are labeled as infants ibuprofen concentrated oral suspension sold under the cvs health brand. At walmart the product is called equate. At Family Dollar stores its sold under the Family Wellness label. If you think you have a bottle under the control, consult your doctor. A woman who worked as a walgreens pharmacist is being accused of not having a pharmacist license after filling more than 700,000 prescriptions. Investigators say kim tien lay worked for nearly 11 years as a pharmacist and pharmacy manager at three different bay area wall green stores in fremont, milpitas and santa rosa but lay has never been licensed as a pharmacist. And had a Pharmacy Technician license which expired in 2008, according to the california state board of pharmacy. For walgreens to have done Something Like that, really surprising and shocking. I wouldnt expect that from a Big Organization like this. Walgreens sent us a statement saying the individual is no longer employed by walgreens and hasnt been since october 2017. Upon learning of this issue, we undertook a reverification of the licenses of all of our pharmacists nationwide to ensure this was an isolated incident. Santa clara county can continue with its plans to buy two hospitals that declared bankruptcy after a federal judge dismissed the state attorney generals attempt to stop the sale. Berkeley police are inviting everyone to join the departments 100mile step challenge today. You have probably heard people saying that sitting is the new smoking and to combat the negative Health Effects of a sedentary lifestyle, the Police Department says we should all aim to walk 100 miles a month. A group of Berkeley Police officers will take part in this challenge beginning at noon. You can meet them there at the front steps of Police Headquarters on Martin Luther king, jr. Way. 7 26 now. A missing woman last seen on the streets of San Francisco. Next the search for where she could be as concern grows about her wellbeing. Good morning. Right now you can see that traffic is a little bit slow in some of these commutes but the sunol grade, this looks about normal, however, in pleasanton just before this shot, there is slow traffic, so we will let you know where the slow traffic is straight ahead. One system ends, didnt do much for some north and east, was okay, for the south and on the coast but a much stronger system on tap for the weekend. Everybody will get in on that. A lot of lightning strikes around San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara this morning. My name is jedda and my favorite thing about the Grilled Chicken Club is the multigrain bun. Insanely good. That leave therea lasting impression. Like the feeling of movement as a new journey begins, or the sight of soft fur, warmed by the morning sun. You might remember new flavours, the sound of an old friends laugh, or a view that defies all expectations. These are the memories that stay with you, long after the moments have passed. I love you give me a preview of what im in store for. Monday very cold around here. Also wind and rain will arrive friday. Saturday morning, it looks like heavy rain and then the cold air arrives sunday into monday. We had a system come by and we will get to that in just a second. There were many, many, 108 to 110 record lows either tied or set and another 44 close. That plunge of cold air, it is moving now and as it starts to lift out, we have a very big system on the way for us tomorrow night into saturday. There goes our system from last night. I know it took a while to get here and it was marin county, San Francisco peninsula, south bay Santa Cruz Mountains. North and east of that it didnt do much. Matt handa in la honda. We had 3 4 inch in la honda overnight and thats where the focus was, on the peninsula, towards the south bay as well as towards the Santa Cruz Mountains. Even sfo and the city had pretty good rain and santa clara 44 100. You will make up for it on this next system friday into saturday. A lot of lightning convection down towards Santa Barbara, also towards the burn area so something to be concerned about towards l. A. Today. 40s, 50s on your temps. There was one upper 30 lakeport, 39. 40s, 50s as some of that cold air moves in but now as the rain ends, the fog has been forming and its thick, thick, thick. You can see down towards Southern California thats where the concern is down there so if youre traveling down there, they are going to get rain today. Our system is barreling across, it will be here tomorrow and it is tapping into very heavy moisture and its going to form a pretty strong surface low which means we will have wind and rain friday night and saturday. Today morning fog and partly cloudy, 60s on the temps. 7 31. Sal is here and tells us that traffic is . Its busy out there. Its not the worst i have seen. But the wet weather complicated it a little bit. Take a look at these commutes. I do want to mention that the bay bridge is about normal now. We do see traffic that is backed up all the way out to the maze. On a morning like this youre going to expect slow traffic and theres nothing unusual about that. This is a look at 880 northbound on the right. You can see traffic is slowing down near hide street on the way to downtown oakland. Overturned vehicle crash just happened a little while ago. Westbound 580 near highway 13. Person is out of the vehicle, the car has flipped over and traffic is slowing down quickly. Its also slow out of san leandro. San mateo slow, dumbarton bridge as well. All the freeways are slow getting up to that west valley including 280, although in downtown it looks all right. 7 32. Go back to the desk. This is more of a normal looking commute at the bay bridge toll plaza which is 20 to 25 minutes. So im here to say its a normal commute, albeit wet from the earlier rain. Its not really as bad as it could be. Theres an overturned vehicle on 580, westbound 580 at highway 13. This crash is there. Someone was out of the car safely, it appears, but the traffic is backing up well into san leandro. As you look at the san mateo and dumbarton bridge it looks slow. San mateo traffic and burlingame both directions on 101 are slow and every single freeway in the south bay is slow. Accident or no accident. If youre trying to drive to sunnyvale, cupertino or mountain view, theres really no way to do it without being in slow traffic. 7 46. Hello, steve. Hello, sal. How are you, my friend . Im well. Good. Good to hear. Get to our weather in just a second. Theres a lot of fog. We had rain overnight and a lot more on the way but first all the cold. I just saw a tweet, the Detroit River is frozen. You can skate from detroit to windsor, ontario. I used to live not far from detroit. I saw the picture and it looks fine to me. I dont know if i would want to do that, though. Chicago set a record low this morning, 21 below. That broke the old mark of 12 below in 1985, records go back to 1870s. There have been 108 records or tied records with 44 more that are close. So thats your surge of cold air. It will start to lift out and temps will rebound over the weekend as a very strong system moves into the west coast. We had that system yesterday and it was all about areas on the coast, marin county, San Francisco peninsula and santa cruz, south bay area. Thomas smith says good morning, steve, we had 49100 on blossom hills, san jose. Once again doubles what san jose airport had. Santa cruz around three quarters. Pacifica, the hills up three quarters of an inch as well. And some of the rainfall totals coming in, we are good on the peninsula for a change. Ben lomond three quarters. San francisco 59 100. Cal had a 1 2. Redwood city had 1 2 of rain, so did burlingame, menlo park had 57 100. Foster city had 58 so there was good rain. Oakland a third and san jose. 23, yet our observer tom had double that. As we usually see. The system is now in around central, Southern California and theres a lot of lightning strikes down there. For us, fog has formed, 30s, 40s and 50s, clearing to the north. 40s and 50s there. Couple of upper 40s in the peninsula. On the coast its 50s. Hayward low 50s. Rain done for now. Where is it . Down in Santa Barbara with a lot of lightning strikes. San luis obispo over to Santa Barbara, heading to l. A. , oxnard. Issue for the burn scar areas. Break today, early tomorrow morning the next system is flying along and it has a lot of moisture, low is going to form on the backside of here and that will be the surface low which kicks up the wind and also enhances the upslope for those that live near the coast, Santa Cruz Mountains, i think marin county, Russian River hefty totals late friday, early saturday. The front will go through, then we will get a break, then cold air comes in sunday into monday. That will lower the snow levels. They will go down to 4000 feet, maybe lower by the time we get to monday morning. And theres going to be some heavy duty snow total, winter storm watch out now, undoubtedly a warning by the time you get to friday night. 60s on the temps today. Warmest temps probably between now and the next five days. Next monday, tuesday look very cool with mid50s for some by monday on the high side. Wow. 7 49. Nfl quarterback jared goffs Bay Area High School is honoring him today as he prepares to play in his first super bowl with the l. A. Rams. Ktvus allie rasmus live for us this morning at Marin Catholic high school on kent field where students and staff are gathering to celebrate the quarterback. Reporter they are declaring this jared goff day at Marin Catholic high school. Thats where jared goff played football and went to high school. He graduated in 3 1 2 years. Everyone here says that hes a very hard worker and very good academically as well as on the field. So to students you see out here are getting prepared to form a good luck message out here on the football field. And they will get some video and some pictures of it and they plan to send that to jared goff and his family to wish him luck in his first super bowl this weekend. I have with me chris valdez, the principal of Marin Catholic high school. And what did you remember about jared when he was here and how is he still a presence here . Jared is very much a presence here. One of the things, he only graduated six years ago. Its not that long to have been gone. My memory of him is strong. He was a great kid. For me hes kind of the sort of model of what all athletic programs, especially in Catholic Schools want to sort of produce. That is an extremely sort of hard working persevering and kind guy. Hes the kind of guy who puts team above self. He recognized early on that success comes from being part of something greater than yourself. He was that kind of selfless sort of player. He was also just a good guy to be around, easy going. You couldnt ever tell if jared was losing or winning, he was cool about it. As if he didnt take it seriously and of course he takes it very seriously. But that wasnt his sort of main characteristic. Hes easy going. Reporter calm and collected like a lot of people see him on the field. What do you expect for this weekend for the super bowl . I expect that very thing, calm and cool. I think one of the things thats going on with him right now is hes got this sort of magic chemistry with sean mcvay, his coach. It reminds of the bill walsh, joe montana thing. I think his ability to sort of stay calm in that pocket, to actually be able to stay cool under the pressure of being in the super bowl at the age he is, is pretty phenomenal. I think its going to be a game just like every other game. Hes going to go out and do the things he does very well. Reporter we are starting to see movement out here. What are the students spelling out . They are spelling out go goff. We have our expert assistant principal here who used to actually do marching band so he knows how to do this configuration. We wanted to find a way for all of our kids to get involved and sort of give a shoutout to jared, let him know how much we support and love him and so they are out here doing typical football fashion a configuration of go goff, to let him know we are there with him. Reporter thank you so much, chris valdez, the principal of Marin Catholic high school. Where we are on the football field, several of them spelling out the message go goff on the football field. You can see die hard fans out here with the number 16 jersey. Once they finish spelling out this message we are going to head up to the stands and get an overhead picture of it and so we will have another update for you guys about an hour from now. Live in marin, allie rasmus, ktvu fox 2 news. Thank you. Auto 11 here. You have heard a number of president ial hopefuls use the phrase medicare for all. Reporter the deep freeze expected to taper off overnight with temperatures forecasted to hit about 20 degrees by friday. In minneapolis, ray bogan, ktvu fox 2 news. And they are used to cold weather out there but even this is extreme for them. Setting record lows all over the place yesterday and even today. 44 on the board, 108 that had already tied or set a record low including chicago which came in at 21 below. That shattered the old mark of 12 below. They didnt just beat it. They beat it big time which was set in 1985. Weather records go back to the 1870s and im sure there will be more coming in here over the next few hours. Still, though, 30 below up at international falls. Cincinnati made it to one below. 74 beautiful degrees down in miami so thats where all those people would like to be or they are there now. Our system gave some rain, coast, not inland. Also Santa Cruz Mountains, but stephanie is at redwoods estates. Good morning, steve, enjoyed the rain last night and cant wait for four days of rain and cooler temps. Redwood estates rainfall overnight was 44 100. Not continuous rain. Some rain friday night, saturday. Boulder creek had the most in the Santa Cruz Mountains. Pacifica hills three quarters of an inch of rain as well. The peninsula did well. Parts of marin county did well and then south but east and north, wasnt much. San jose 23 100. Mill valley 1 2, ben lomond our low into Ventura County. Thats where the flash flood watches are posted. There was a lot of thunderstorm activity in Santa Barbara so the burn areas are major concern there for Southern California. 30s, 40s and 50s for us. You can see a lot of those lightning strikes but now focus it looks like a lot has clashed but still moderate to heavy rainfall will move into Southern California here. Our next system, the leading edge is showing up and it has a lot more going for it for everybody this time. Its tapping into very deep moisture, a surface low going to form which will crank up the wind and it looks like that low will want to go in saturday afternoon somewhere around San Francisco. At least in the bay area. Moderate to heavy rainfall, then sunday night a cold system drops in which will lower the snow levels so looking for two to three, maybe isolated 4 inches amounts of rain between now and monday night. And the sierra, it will become a winter storm warning and that snow level is going to go way down by sunday night into monday. Go up friday and then come way down. 60s on the temps, the warmest highs we see for about probably a week or so as a lot of cold air on the rain, a rain friday night, saturday morning and then sunday night, monday, very cold with low snow levels. Sal, now i will go to you. Caught me looking at my computer, which is something that most people do at work every single day. Look at the computer for hours and hours. Go out and take a look at the commute now. Northbound 280 in santa rosa, doesnt look bad. However, this stretch is not representative of what its like ahead of you trying to drive to cupertino. It is very slow from about just before highway 17, it continues to be slow. Ill take the icons off the screen to show you where all the slow traffic is. It is slow everywhere. Its not as bad today on 17 and 880 getting up to the airport as it was yesterday. We do have a crash southbound 101 in san mateo before 92. So if youre driving down the peninsula, perhaps 280 is the best bet. In fact, i would use two 80 280 and avoid 101 even though theres slow traffic after 92. 101 has the crash and going to be very slow out of burlingame. Also looking at the bay bridge toll plaza backed up for a 15 to 20 minute delay. At 8 21 go back to the desk. Thank you. Breaking news just into the ktvu newsroom. I dont think we are going to be seeing sunshine for quite some time, the way the weekend is looking up. Its going to be a lot of precipitation around here. Maybe today, you guys, once that fog lifts but then after that, the next couple of days are going to be a lot of rain friday night, saturday morning and then we will get a break saturday evening but theres a lot of low clouds and fog, its thick out there. And then sunday night, monday we are going to get a cold system in here and for us, next Tuesday Morning and wednesday morning are going to be cold, cold around here. Pat miller says the fog is thick up at fox tail golf course in rohnert park. The system making its move down to the Central California coast, also out to the san joaquin valley, moving rapidly into Ventura County and southern county. Santa cruz mountains, gilroy as well, two thirds inch of rain. Peninsula got in on some rain, sfo, santa clara and after that, north and east there wasnt much there for the north bay or the east bay. A couple 100th to a 10th of an inch in east bay. No breeze, so the fog had no problem forming with temperatures and dew points right there together. 40s and 50s and look for a foggy morning, then some sunbreaks later but the next system is flying across and it is tapping into much deeper moisture, has a lot more going for it and it will give us widespread wind and rain friday evening, friday night and early saturday morning. 60s on the temps. 8 31 and, sal, usually this time youre looking in the south bay, usually. You and mike mibach have figured me out. Good morning, everyone. We are starting in the south bay. Northbound 280 getting up to highway 17, looks pretty good, because and the reason i do the south bay at this time is because this is when the south bay is some of the slowest traffic we have seen. It doesnt look bad here on 101 near mckee but if you look at the map there are very few areas where theres not slow traffic. So you will sometimes drive in decent traffic and other times you wont. One of the areas thats the slowest is the little triangle, the 237 and 101 make here. Look at these freeways. Not very good driving, although if you drive this way every day youre probably used to it. You look at the peninsula, southbound 101 in the vicinity of third, there was a crash. I would avoid 101 and use 280 instead if youre heading down the peninsula. And also in daly city slow traffic 280 northbound, bay bridge backed up to the maze. 8 32. Lets go back to the desk. We are following breaking news in oakland. This is where police are investigating a deadly shooting. It is happening near the intersection of 40th avenue and san juan street. Meanwhile, wildfire victims are planning a protest against the utility to demand compensation for their losses. Ktvus Elissa Harrington just spoke with one of the organizers of the protest. She joins us live with the latest on these developments. Elissa. Reporter that demonstration happens at 9 00 a. M. In sacramento, around the same time when lawyers for pg e will face a judge here in San Francisco. Pg e has said that it is more than 50 billion in debt. It officially filed for chapter 11 bankruptcy on tuesday and wants protection from wildfire costs. Wildfire victims and other Community Groups are holding the rally in sacramento where they will demand pg e compensate victims immediately. They plan to read the names of all of those people who died in the camp fire in paradise. One of the organizers, seth sanders told me hes disturbed by pg es bankruptcy filing. Hes calling on state lawmakers to step in and do the right thing. This is really on Governor Newsom, the legislature and the cpuc and i think that the survivors have had enough, the people of california have had enough and i think we really need to see them act in our interest and not in the interest of citibank or, you know, Power Company ceos. Reporter pg e wants to continue paying their thousands of workers and continue moving forward with a 5 1 2 billion dollars bank loan while freezing the companys debt. Todays hearings are scheduled to begin at 10 00 a. M. Live in San Francisco, Elissa Harrington, ktvu fox 2 news. Time now 8 34. Several of the democratic president ial candidates and potential candidates say they support universal healthcare. Ktvus doug luzader reports from washington, d. C. Where medicare for all has become something of a rallying cry and a point of contention. Reporter things can certainly change but right now healthcare looks to be a defining issue for 2020 and it has become something of a litmus test for Many Democrats. Its enough to make blood pressures rise around the country. What to do about a Healthcare System that is still a major source of angst. Early Democratic Front runner Kamala Harris is still trying to explain her position on medicare for all, which calls for a massive expansion of an otherwise Popular Program that is now primarily for older americans. Everyone has access to healthcare, period. And thats what will happen under medicare for all. Reporter that idea championed on the left by everyone from Elizabeth Warren to bernie sanders. It polls very well. One survey shows 50 support medicare for all. Two words put together that everybody likes, all and medicare. Sounds great until you have to explain how thats going to work. Reporter because if it raises taxes for most people, 60 suddenly oppose the idea. Its no secret that President Trump has railed against government expanded healthcare for years. But even on the left it has become a divisive issue and its one of the reasons that the liberal former ceo of starbucks is thinking about mounting an independent run for the white house. To come out with a suggestion that we are going to eliminate, eradicate the Insurance Industry is just its such a its so false and it is it speaks to the level of politics that we now have. Reporter and statements like that are why Howard Schultz is seen by Many Democrats as a potential spoiler for 2020, someone who could siphon away democratic votes and hand the election to President Trump. In washington, doug luzader, fox 2. We are expecting to get more information today about a teenager who is accused of killing an 8yearold girl in santa cruz. Bring in jesse gary live at san jose state to bring us more on this. Reporter good morning, guys, yeah, we are here at the Student Union and all eyes inside meeting room two which is behind me on the other side of the wall are waiting and watching a live video feed. 60 san jose students had a hand in developing and designing and getting the satellite into space. We are joined now by dr. Marcus morebach. This satellite, talk about some of the dimensions. This is about a 2foot long satellite weighing about 15 pounds. Its pretty small. Probably its a nano satellite. Nana salt . Yes, a 15pounder. About 800,000 feet up in the sky at the International Space station. Going to deploy this in a couple of meetings. Thats right. Send it off into space. 60 seconds into its journey, what happens . Our primary experiment gets deployed which it looks like a big stiffened parachute. It substitutes for a rocket system that we would use otherwise to deorbit the payload. Slow it down and bring it back into reentry . Thats correct. And so we are going to prack this a few times with the as we improve the technology, we will be able to literally parachute things off the space station, have them survive the hot part of the reentry and eventually collect the samples. Youre saying you can get things from the International Space station back down to earth by using this system, putting it in a small satellite, sending it into space, popping a parachute and having it essentially back down . Yes. It will heat heat shield materials, et cetera. We dont have any heat shield materials on this so eventually we have to design it also for the hot part of the reentry. This segment of the technology is just primarily for the deorbit part so we have to practice targeting first and so this is target practice. Excellent. I think they are getting ready to we are. Lets take a look inside while we let the professor go inside. You can see on the screen, this is a live feed from the International Space station and there it goes. Deployed. 60 seconds into this flight and remember this is 800,000 feet above the earth. 60 seconds in, you will see a looks like a parachute. It will come out of the satellite and thats going to slow it down. Even though its in space, still enough air or atmosphere to create enough drag to slow this down. So now they said they are going to wait about 60 seconds from now. So 60 seconds from now that parachute structure will deploy and that will slow it down and begin reentry. Reagree means it starts falling back to earth and the idea is to see if this can be a system from getting material from the International Space station back down to earth more cheaply than having to use the rocket. Exciting times there at santa rosa State University san jose State University. Steve paulson has an exciting forecast. You can see traffic is going to be busy on 101, 17, 85, 280, all of these freeways are slow and you can see it removed all the icons. About the only thing thats better today than yesterday was 17. Yesterday it was a mess, today its much better getting up through campbell. If you are driving on 880 it is slow from just south of union city or just south of hayward down to fremont. And we have cleared up that accident southbound 101 in burlingame. I would still use 280 if i were you instead of 101 heading south, 280 is slow in daly city and bay bridge is backed up for a 15 to 20 minute delay at the toll plaza but the rain moved out just as steve said it would and really helped us out for the morning commute. 8 27.
